Giants are signing veteran free agent DT Jordan Phillips today, source said. The former Bills DT had some familiar faces in the NYG building today. - per Ian Rapoport
Schoen has put together a pretty damn good offseason.
Phillips is a BIG boy. He was a load at Oklahoma. I remember he had a fantastic year a few years ago. He had like 8-11 sacks, IIRC, which for a NT is extremely impressive.
Not bad. IDK where he is in his career now, but at the very least it's quality depth.
Jordan Phillips might have played his final snap with the Buffalo Bills and in the NFL.
Phillips, 31, has had a history of injuries during his career. His season ended in December after he was placed on injured reserve following wrist surgery.
During locker cleanout day, Phillips told reporters including the Buffalo News that he’s considering retiring from football
Last year, FWIW. But a much needed depth piece on the DL, assuming he has something left in the tank.
I noticed they’ve been light on DL visits on the top 30 - save for a late round guy Boyd. I did see Maason Smith was in for a visit, though it doesn’t seem to be reported anywhere. Linked the tweet where I saw that.. Link - ( New Window )
big fan of this signing - he looked real good when i saw BUF last year
he played about 1/3 snaps there which is the exact right amount to backup dex.
have been suggesting/expecting a few of him, hyde, lawson, dane jackson, etc from BUF. all should be under comp pick threshold and would have solid roles here.
really like the way Schoen has generally attacked depth signings.

There ya go. I'm guessing we signed him for the VSB and if he doesn't make the team, he'll hang 'em up.
31
Was a 2nd round pick who at one point signed a 30 mil/3 year del with Miami.
Last year signed with the Bills for 3 mil
Seems - like Nunes-Roches- is a run specialist who can rotate in. Dex, Nunes-Roches, Phillips, DJ and Riley - and maybe a draft pick if it's an upgrade
To have experienced bodies inside competing. He isn't a lock to make the team but he could surprise in camp. If not, you have two good young boys in Davidson and Riley.

He's done very nicely. Would be nice if Phillips can replace Robinson

Sitting. It can change based off what they do before he decides.
That's an abysmal PFF rating, anyone watch him closely enough to have an opinion?
i remember him making a few impressive plays in one of their national games. 1 was an unfortunate facemask or something like that, but the actual play he made was really impressive.
in whatever game it was i remember specifically thinking that he did a good job making himself into a decent role player after originally being considered a bust.
he had 3 hurries and a sack against cincy on SNF so im thinking that may have been it.
I know he had the huge season in Buffalo later, but my enduring memory is him losing his shit on the sideline and getting cut the next day.
I'm surprised to see the Giant add another nose tackle and not a 3 tech type.
each of these rows are the last 5 seasons (most recent on the top) - his alignments have been pretty diverse. I think this is a likely Ashawn replacement (he played 226 snaps in b gap last year, 200 over tackle, just 5 A gap).
Dexter Lawrence had played mostly A gap last 2 years
Last year, FWIW. But a much needed depth piece on the DL, assuming he has something left in the tank.

That's very interesting about Maason Smith. He's a massive human being and a good athlete. He's a guy I could see us taking a chance on in the 4th-5th round. Think he'd be used as a DE in our current scheme. Think he ends up being a better pro than college player. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he ended up turning into a Justin Smith (Former 49er DE) type player.
I think this signing makes that less slightly urgent — but only slightly. He looks like a part-time player at best at this stage of his career. They need a replacement for Leonard WIlliams.
Or, at least, they would have if they'd kept Wink. I don't know what the new guy will do.

Judging by Bowen's defense I would still place a quicker 3-Tech high on the priorities list for Day 2.

Is there a former first rounder, that’s still only 28, who has proven to be very good available right now? Who’s starting opposite Banks? A one year deal at a reasonable rate that gives him a chance to prove his value and get a longer contract after.

i think they will still draft someone.
i think today Lawrence starts in the A gap at NT, backed up by Davidson or Riley.
Nacho and Phillips probably compete for starter in the B gap/3 tech with the non-starter backing up all the other positions.
The 3rd starter could be one one of the 3 non-starters above, or an end with hand in dirt be it Thibs or Burns, or a 6h DL rookie they draft with some position flex/athleticism.

Judging by Bowen's defense I would still place a quicker 3-Tech high on the priorities list for Day 2.
Getting pressure from Dex along with Burns, and (hopefully) KT, I wonder if we would be ok with a less athletic 3-tech who can be more run-focused.
This would be a cheaper route (either in FA or a lower draft pick) and would free up our day 2 picks for other positions.

I'm hoping this isn't another Danny Shelton signing...
I don't know if he even makes it out of camp......but very big boy.....now, with Paterson influence.....only 31( he might have millage, 31 is not old old).....and mgt. And the coaches know him.....
A.Robinson 22 mil contract.....some seem to say.....we lost a key cog.....was he?
Patterson influence.....seems to help most players.....

31 in football is very old. It's like a player going for a third contract, which represents a very small percentage. Not many of those in the NFL. A'Shawn Robinson played very well for the Giants and seemed to get better as the season progressed.
Last year, FWIW. But a much needed depth piece on the DL, assuming he has something left in the tank.

Justin Eliis too.
Phillips is competing for a roster spot. He could still play and get about 20-30% give or take. Not have the responsibility that A'Shawn had, of course.
it could be but phillips has generally been better than ellis/shleton
jelly had 1.5 sacks in his entire career - and 1 of them was actually as a giant. before coming to the nyg he had 9 starts in his prior 4 years combined.
shelton had 6 over his career.
phillips started 9/14 games just last year had 2.5 sacks last year plus another one taken away by penalty. he has 24 sacks in his career.
bigger guys can lose it quick so cross your fingers but im guessing this is a very cheap deal so no downside.
Jackson it looks like drew just three flags in each year
with the Giants. One PI last year. That's a pretty good stat. Some corners get three in a single game.
I saw him miss what should have been an easy take out of bounds. The guy got past him and took off down the sidelines, but Jackson at least ran after him and almost caught him. He might be one of those vets who doesn't play all out when his team is not competing for anything after four weeks.
His injury history is not too good, but better Jackson than playing someone signed off the practice squad.

Smart signing by #Giants. I'd expect a similar move at CB, either before or soon after the draft.

It’s a different scheme. More attention to 3 tech with the ability to penetrate and get pressure than run stop.
No shit. Robinson got $22.5 million however.
