NFT: Montgomery fires Boras

mitch300 : 4/11/2024 6:28 pm
What B.S. Now he does fires him. Maybe he should have done this in February. The agent works for the player. Altuve told Boras what to do.

Why is it BS

if he’s unhappy with his representation, that’s his business. Do you really know the details enough to call it bullshit? Maybe Altuve had different goals?

Believe his point was, had Monty fired him earlier he may have gotten a contract much sooner.

Yes.

This is a BAD look for Boras. Monty stood to get at least a 4 year deal based on his last 2 seasons. Next off season, he'll be 32 and looking at his career to date, he's a tick above .500 W/L. This should have been his big contract year. Next year, who knows? This could cost him tens of millions of $.
Good gooooooood

Hopefully Soto's faith is shaken in Boras after this disaster of an off-season for his clients
While it is clear that

Boras misplayed the market for Montgomery and others, I believe daffy duck could easily navigate the market for Soto. Take a look at the contract commitments on the books for 2025 and you will see a few big spenders with some room to spend.

Did Montgomery step on any toes in Texas ?
Ron from Ninerland : 4/12/2024 9:48 am : link
Texas doesn't win that World Series without Montgomery. He pitched better during his time in Texas than he ever has in his life. I can't think of another instance where such a player doesn't even get an offer from his team. When the Yankees traded him to St. Louis, that trade was more about getting rid of him than it was about getting Bader.

I wonder if there wasn't something else going where Montgomery was just pissing everybody off. Once Blake Snell/Boras announced that he was willing to take a short term deal, it should have been obvious to Montgomery that 20 x 3 or less was all he was going to get. It surprises me that no one bit.

Texas TV deal wasn't what they thought it would be so less money.
I got the impression

That a middle rotation guy came up big in a few big games, and so his agent tried to maximize on it, only to find that teams didn't value him at the same level.

Perfect summation.
I agree, which is why I don’t really blame either

Monty likely had unreasonable expectations and Boras probably overplayed his hand - bad combo. I don’t have the data to prove it but it feels like there’s been a bit of a shift - the top tier guys are getting taken care of and the middle of the road players are paying some of that bill. Who wants to give Monty 4 years, especially an AL team? I wouldn’t.
Maybe MLB owners are finally realizing

how poor the ROI is on most pitching contracts and less willing to sign off on them. Texas is paying deGrom 185 million dollars and he's pitched 30 innings for them. There is some talk he might be back in August of this year. He has 3 more years on his contract. That could decrease your appetite for another 30+ pitcher for big money. I think by the time that Montgomery was willing to take a short contract the Texas credit card, like the Yankees was maxed out.
