I'm watching this now. It's nice to watch knowing what all eventually happened. Incredible drama especially watching the lead up to NYG at 4. Link - ( New Window )
Leigh Steinberg is still such an insufferable douchebag
Eli Manning was the first QB taken by NYG since Simms in 1979. 25 years. After Eli, the Giants didn't draft a first round QB again until 2019. And we have fans still cautious for drafting a QB now.
The Giants don't draft QBs. No wonder so many fans feel the way they do. And no, the broadcast didn't include Dave Brown in that stat.
There were other QB's drafted in the 1st that won Super Bowls. I haven't gone over every Super Bowl winner but Plunkett and Dawson came to mind as did Elway. You made a point of identifying Eli but based on what they were trying to convey is wrong. He gets lumped in the same bucket as Elway as players who were traded after the draft. (Dawson and Plunkett were both cut from the teams drafting them).
Even if ESPN only listed the 4, it is really a bullsh*t stat as it doesn't include Joe Namath. Namath was drafted in the 1st by the Jets and won for that team. Difference being that the Jets were in the AFL at that time.
From 2013 on, there is 1 QB who was drafted in the 1st round and won for the team drafting him. That would be Mahomes. Peyton Manning and Matt Stafford were 1st round picks who won for a different team in that span.

Thanks for that. Yes, they excluded Elway and Plunkett because they didn't win for the teams that drafted them.Of course, Eli didn't either.
I would say that is another misuse of statistics, because the point of giving the stat was to say that drafting a first round QB wouldn't get you one who would win a SB.
Dawson and Namath were excluded because prior to the common draft of '67.
had lots of holes and weaknesses but yet they traded picks in the next year (2005) to make sure they got Eli in this draft.. So much so as we had just 4 draft picks in 2025. BY the way, 3 of those 4 were big contributors to our 2007 SB Champs..
So, if we want MAYE, trade up and get him 2025 draft be damned...

The Browns too... for a f*ckin soldier.
The Redskins picked Sean Taylor when they had 3rd year Patrick Ramsey and veteran Mark Brunell.
Cardinals picked Larry Fitzgerald when they had *checks notes* Josh McCown and Shaun King.
The Raiders did pick up Kerry Collins who was not a franchise guy, but still solid and capable.

From 2005-2012, five different first round drafted QBs would win a Super Bowl: Ben, Peyton, Eli, Aaron and Joe Flacco.
Shows the fallacy of looking back with the presumption that it means anything for the future.
