NFT: RIP Ken Holtzman

Ron from Ninerland : 4/15/2024 6:10 pm
In what has already been a grim week in Yankee baseball, Ken Holtzman has passed away. His exploits as a Yankee were minor in the late 70's, but prior to that he was an important part of the Oakland A's dynasty in the early 70's, along with Catfish Hunter.

Good ole' Holtzman . . .

Not sure how much of a "Billy Baller" he was as a pitcher, but he played for Martin with Oakland and then was brought onto the Yankees in the late 70's with their 1977 & 1978 teams. If I recall he was not on the playoff roster, but he was a solid starter for them during those years.
Got my wires crossed above . . .

Billy Martin with A's in early 80's, Holtzman with A's in early 70's when they won those titles.
Before he was with the As, I first remember Holtzman

as part of the Cubs rotation in 1969, when the Mets overtook them. With Ferguson Jenkins and Bill Hands.
Seems a bit

Great Rotation

Catfish, Holtzman and Vida Blue. Rollie Fingers in the bullpen. Also Blue Moon Odom and Darold Knowles.

The less said about his Yankee tenure the better. Had a lot of innings on his arm by then.

RIP

Only guy to Throw no-hitter without getting a strike out… great trivia question. I’ll give you one more unrelated no disrespect to Mr. Holtzman…….. who is the only guy that hit two runs or more in a single game for seven different teams? Mike Cameron … he told me that himself so it must be true

Wrong. Billy Ball in Oakland didn't start until 1980. Dick Williams and Alvin Dark were they managers for the 1972-1974 A's WS champions. Holtzman pitched for Cubs before the A's and was excellent for both teams. Worked fast, threw strikes.
He was a pretty good pitcher with the A's and the Cubs

We got him at the end of his career and he really wasn't too good by then. Just a fill in pitcher for the big late 70's Yankees teams, I don't think he even made the playoff roster one season

Only modern guy. Two guys did it in the first quarter of the 20th century.

I remember he was part of two huge trades....came to the team with Reggie from Oakland...that trade didnt work out so well, although Reggie was fun to watch for a year. Then he was part of that HUGE trade with the Yankees that brought Rick Dempsey, Scott McGregor, Tippy Martinez and Rudy May to town...that one worked out better:)

RIP.

As a Yankee fan, I didn't want to even mention that trade. One of the worst in our history. Bad enough to get taken but to help a division rival like that, just awful.
