Right? It would be cool having your team win Superbowls or be in it every year, but that almost seems secondary to most of the coverage of that team.
Yeah poor Chiefs fans

with their 3 Super Bowls in the last 5 years. I'd sign up for that with a side of Swifty headlines any time.

I’d take it on the Giants

not sure why people care. The nfl is already trending towards wrestling anyway.
Can't wait to see the rap battle between Taylor Swift and Yung Joka

I imagine there are things that push your buttons that others might not agree with, no? I really don't think it's the kinda thing you look at and say "Huh, I cant imagine why that bothers them". I mean, it's pretty obvious isn't it? Something that's been a part of the American fabric is changing. While some of those changes have been amazing, others have not. Specifically the pursuit of new revenue by teaming up with the gambling entities, tweaking the game to court new fans and higher scores, among other things. I dont have any kind of strong feelings about Taylor Swift. She seems like a decent person. But the relationship being force fed to America for financial benefit is gross imo. And thats not even getting into the league waiting until it was financially viable to engage in social commentary, or the way they speak out both sides of their mouths re: player safety.

All of these people, the gambling entities, advertisers, influencers, and the new fans brought in by these efforts, they care less about what you and I do, and more about some other thing that should be secondary to the game. Or quite literally they want the game to do something for them, make a buck or boost their profile. Those people suck (in relation to their interest in football, at least) and the game would be better served if they fucked off and found a new hobby. If that sounded like gatekeeping, good.

When you say you'd take it on the Giants, what is "it" exactly? You'd like to see a Giant date Taylor Swift? That to me is way more bizarre than getting annoyed by a contrived circus. I mean, it would be harder for our fans to get tickets to home games, all the resale sites see a jump when she's going to be there. Could you imagine her fans brigading this place? Youre nuts man lol!

I wish the Giants had a player good enough for a pop star to date.
Jrud

I don’t really know what you are asking. But I’ll repeat, I’ll take the chiefs “problem”. Winning titles and having a pop star shown in the booth is a hilarious thing to be mad at.

Except thats not what Im "mad" at. That response is incredibly reductive and you know it. Youre taking valid complaints about the direction of the NFL and distilling it down to its dumbest aspect. Im obviously not mad at the Chiefs wining titles and Swift being in the luxury box, and describing my complaint in that matter is disingenuous and tbh a little smug. I think i made it clear what my issue was. Like I said, to me it all fits a larger pattern of football becoming the least important thing in the NFL. I think it's a valid complaint and I'm FAR from the only one who feels that way.

And I was clearly being fatuous. You seem to want to cling to that rather than anything else I've posted here. Anything else you'd like to respond to?
And to be clear, I don't expect you to agree with me
j_rud : 4/20/2024 8:53 am : link
But acting like you can't understand why people are upset with the state of the NFL is, as I've said, smug and disengeuous. You don't have to agree that it's bad to recognize the massive shift we've seen in recent years.

I get jrud’s bigger point: I do think the NFL cares too much about non football stuff than the product on the field, which I think has declined over the years. And I don’t think that’s the old man in me, waxing nostalgic for the NFL of yesteryear.

christian : 4/20/2024 9:04 am : link
I think we understand you're mad. You make that pretty clear.

What's weird is you railing against the NFL and claiming you'd brutally kill yourself, in a thread about Taylor Swift writing a song.

From the dawn of at least 19th century America on, entertainment has existed as a vehicle for advertising. It's literally the reason it exists.

I have a hard time connecting more advertising to an alleged decline of the game on the field.

Is there more advertising? Sure. Is it just as easily ignored? Yes.
christian.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 4/20/2024 9:37 am : link
I get the advertising angle; what I'm getting @ is that I think the NFL is a little too concerned with off the field stuff, be it betting, FF, etc.-than the product on the field. I just don't think the game is as good as it once was, but the NFL continues to rake in the $ so there's no incentive for them to change. And I get it from that angle-the NFL is a behemoth & as much bitching as I might have about the quality of play, I'm going to be there on Sunday watching it regardless.

christian : 4/20/2024 9:47 am : link
Everything off the field is directly or indirectly about advertising.

Fantasy and gambling are some of the biggest advertisers. And the more eyeballs drawn to the game because of fantasy and gambling, increase the rate cards for the other advertisers.

Now, you might feel the NFL has adjusted the rules to be more exciting and appeal to more fans. I can understand that. Personally I hate smash mouth, kill shot football. But if you dislike the game on the field now, that's perfectly understandable.

The other stuff is so easily ignored.
