The Athletic: Ranking the most to least ideal QB-needy teams

M.S. : 4/20/2024 7:07 am
for top draft prospects to land.

The Athletic has taken a look at 7 NFL teams who may be looking to draft a QB next week. In their own words:

"Young quarterbacks have a hierarchy of needs to be met to self-actualize into franchise quarterbacks. They need pass protection, weapons to throw to, a run game and defense to support them, and a play-caller whom they can trust. Of course, some young quarterbacks are talented enough to overcome not having every need met, but teams shouldn’t count on that."

The Athletic graded each team on the basis of the above 5 criteria that would aid in the rookie QBs overall development (or maybe lead to failure). Here is the Giants Report Card:

Pass blocking: F
Run game: C
Weapons: D (potential F)
Play-caller: B
Defense: C

I utilized the numeric scale (at bottom) to convert these grades into an average GPA based on a 4-point scale. The Giants GPA is 1.6, which hovers somewhere between a C- and a D+. Here are the GPAs for all 7 teams:

Minnesota 3.48
Chicago 3.20
Denver 3.00
New England 2.75
Las Vegas 2.68
Washington 1.94
Giants 1.60

Grade Conversion
A 4.0
A- 3.7
B+ 3.3
B 3.0
B- 2.7
C+ 2.3
C 2.0
C- 1.7
D+ 1.3
D 1.0
D- .7
F 0
Not all those areas are equal

But you can stop at Pass Blocking F
Can’t buy that subjective scaling
Sammo85 : 4/20/2024 7:16 am : link
The scoring for NE, Raiders, Broncos are a joke. NE is being overrated because of the defense - but Belichick is no longer there. They have an abysmal roster with no offensive weapons and their OL sucks. Broncos are being overrated because of Payton as OC. Raiders scaling is just flat out bizarre and is totally disproportionately high.
Expecting the Giants OL

to be as bad as last year is also flawed logic.

Gotta say this: Had the Giants not signed Jon Runyan, Jr. and Jermaine Eluemunor, they would be in a world of hurt right now!
NE higher than

the Giants? As terrible as the Giants were, NE was twice as bad.
And that’s been true for a decade

Hard to believe. At least we can say Schoen has truly prioritized the OL. Whether that works is yet to be seen.
I would bump

the run game down to D. Downgrade at RB position and Giants RG has required the QB to significantly contribute.

Regardless, draft the QB if you have a conviction and the draft breaks right imv.

They’d be at some risk of a problem if injuries hit. Andrew Thomas missed like around half the season. Schmitz missed games. They’ve changed OL coaches (coincidentally Raiders grade is ridiculous for this as well, I don’t see them being as good). The Giants will be better on OL. They’ve also added competent depth.
What is crazy is that
mattnyg05 : 4/20/2024 8:15 am : link
the Giants have Andrew Thomas at LT, legitimately a top 5 if not best in football, and that F grade is completely warranted.

That's insane. Do better Giants on the line, obviously, its been too long.
This doesn't account for the idea
David B. : 4/20/2024 9:21 am : link
That a rookie would sit a while behind Jones or even Lock. He wouldn't have to play immediately.

I've said all along, if the Giants draft a QB, he should sit while the (hopefully better) OL sorts out their shit. Rather than ruining a rookie behind a sieve OL, Let Jones take the beating. He's used to it.

That said, yes, there are better situations in which a rookie QB could land.

I think they got even less out of Mac Jones than we got out of Taylor/DeVito.

Why is that?
I agree the critique of The Athletic’s grading process.
DonnieD89 : 4/20/2024 11:50 am : link
it doesn’t take into account that we have on paper improved the blocking situation. I do agree that there are lack of weapons on this team with the loss of Saquon Barkley and the likely loss of Darren Waller. There is no one to the game plan for on the Giants offense. New England should be graded the worse. There is no doubt that they have no offensive line, playcalling is indeterminant given new coaching staff, and they have no weapons. Minnesota is the best destination for a new quarterback.
Well, based on that grading
Jarvis : 4/20/2024 12:20 pm : link
And the fact that we are considered QB needy(something i agree with) it would make us clearly the worst team in the NFL. (Based on this). I am not sure that is accurate. However, in regards to strategy, if we are the worst team in the NFL, do we really think adding a WR will suddenly change our fortunes? How does th current coaching staff survive? No easy answer.
Our offensive talent is really bad.
Mike from SI : 4/20/2024 12:31 pm : link
We have one great/near great player in Andrew Thomas. The rest of the guys can be characterized at best as "having potential" or JAGs. Maybe you can call Slayton mediocre. Maybe JMS is there or one of the new o-lineman can also accurately be described as mediocre. But so many of these guys are unimpressive where they are in their careers.
