at 5v5 the whole game was in the Caps end, on the PP they moved the puck well and set up the seam pass to Kreider. it's coming. They overplayed the one-timer by Mika or shot by Fox/Panarin. that seam pass was open.
Even with the PP's the Caps had 4 shots on goal the whole period. Rangers still getting their legs after the layoff.
all the penalties were weak IMO, both ways - except the Pacioretty one which should earn him a seat on the bench since it negated a PP. Refs trying to set a tone it seems. Opposite of TBL vs FLA where the refs seemed to let them play a lot more.
One on vesey was a little suspect too but they didn't show a replay.
Regardless solid 40 mins, just managed to hit the net these last 20. Too bad they gave up that quick one but don't see any reason they won't close this one out at this rate.
Best thing is we have hardly heard the names ovechkin or oshie
This game could not have gone any better for the Rangers. I thought the refs were fine, if anything I thought the Rangers got the better calls - Ovi was right to be pissed he was tripped during a grade A chance by Fox, they missed a call here and there but the early calls were weak both ways - probably intentionally to set the tone knowing the history.
On to game 2.
Hopefully Anakim isn't scared of Lindgren anymore. The Capitals are the worst goal differential team to be in the playoffs in over 30 years and are short-handed defensively to boot. They cannot score. When the Rangers get 2 goals from the 4th line it's game over. This series should be a cakewalk. I know fans tend to not let themselves be over confident, but this is the series to be over confident. The talent gap is that wide.
the biggest risk for the Rangers is winning too quickly and being rusty for the next series or not really getting "playoff tested" with such an easy round 1. and I'll take those risks 100 times out of 100.
For months on this site he has been saying pairing Miller with Schneider (and pairing Trouba with Gus) would result in better team D.
With what I have seen in the last 2 regular season games and today, Anakiim was right.
Nobody wanted to see Trouba injured and out, but that forced a Miller/Schneider trial pairing for about a dozen games and the results led to the current pairings.
I can recall as a Rangers fan. They did exactly what they had to do, pretty much dominated the game start to finish, and Caps were never a real threat to string together a couple of goals. Seeding really doesn't matter much, but getting the Caps in round 1 and hopefully getting this done in 4, maybe 5 games, can go a long way in the Rangers going a long way. Top to bottom, this team was excellent yesterday. If this 4th line can play the way they did yesterday the rest of the way, look out.
Steady as she goes. It is a beautiful sight when they suppress shots and high danger chances the way they did yesterday.
I don't have gripes with any of the players, but to give some credit to one who has received praise less frequently -- doesn't show up in the score sheet, but Wennberg had the Caps in jail all game long.
Wilson's locker room comments after the game were easy to laugh at, but they actually make a lot of sense. The only realistic narrative for their room is that the game went the way they wanted it to except for a 5 minute stretch. They aren't very good, and they just need to play a low-variance game and hope that they get the bounces and the goaltending.
Plenty of wood to chop, but the coffee is delicious today.
good win, very methodical and they kept their coll
Got them for free through work. I can't justify spending the money to go to a Rangers or Knicks playoff game. If I could see into the future and know it would be a win, then I would. But to spend all that money and then see a loss, I just can't bring myself to do it.
Yeah, what the heck are we thinking? Ranger fans on BBI being giddy after a good ass whoopin' will lead to over confidence! Then we're screwed!

Haha. I just never understand fans cautioning other fans on a chat forum to not be too happy after a victory (as if it's going to affect the team). Or telling other Giant fans they shouldn't root for victories during lost seasons, as if they're the reason the Giants are picking 6th instead of 4th or 5th.
They played exactly the kind of game I wanted to see. They controlled the game almost entirely from the opening faceoff. They smothered Washington's power play. Gave up very few 5v5 chances. Cashed in on their own high danger scoring chances. Good goaltending, though Igor didn't have to do too much. Played aggressive and physical hockey.
My only gripe is that they still make too many lazy, dangerous passes that get picked off. Doesn't hurt them too much against Washington because that team just doesn't have much scoring talent. More dangerous teams will make them pay for it. Gotta tighten that up. Aside from that, I was very happy with their performance.

Agree with everything here. Only thing I want to add is to try to stay out of the penalty box. They made a few ticky tack ones, however they missed one on Fox.
Washington might not back you pay, but Carolina, Florida, Boston, Toronto will.

Agreed, Rick In Dallas is always like this. He's a guy who could win a million dollars off a $5 dollar scratch off and he'd complain about the dust the ticket made.

So pretty.
WHY IS REMPE THERE?
Oh, and fuck Tom Wilson. Lets flush these guys in 4

WHY IS REMPE THERE?
I like Rempe. He is a much better skater than people think. But Panarin not getting on the ice for 4-5 minutes is not good.

Great call
2) Can the Kreider-Zibanejad-Roslovic/Chytil line produce on 5v5?
And STF out of the penalty box....unless it's Rempe laying the smackdown on Wilson.
I kind of think it comes down to the 4th line and depth in general...
Oh please... go be sad in the corner while the rest of us actually enjoy a good ass-kicking by the good guys...

The reason was to set a tone, which it did. The penalty was bullshit.
