Brightwell and Gray, RBs…remember them?

5BowlsSoon : 4/21/2024 7:23 pm
It seems practically everyone here has given up on both of these guys or at least doesn’t even include them in the conversation.

I don’t recall seeing either guys run much with the pigskin last year to properly judge them. I think their combined total of carries was about 30.

And wasn’t Gray a guy who Schoen drafted last year in round 5 ….and many were telling us this kid has much to like and will surprise everyone . Oh yeah? Well, we know he can’t field punts but we don’t need him for that. Can he compliment Singletary…that’s all we need from him? In fact can either of these two guys be a good complimentary back to do what Singletary probably can’t do well?

If yes, then why sweat over picking up another 5th round RB when I’m sure we have other more pressing needs with our last 3 picks after round 3? LB , DT, S, TE

Disclaimer: I’m assuming we would have already drafted a WR, QB, and CB with our first 3 picks.
With Saquon on the team, no other RB got much of a chance

Running backs need touches to make a name for themselves, and touches that didn't go to Barkley were rare. They should get more touches this coming season, although it's possible that Singletary gets the bulk of carries. I think the guys we have are at least healthy and not nicked up.
Gray
Wiggy : 4/21/2024 7:36 pm : link
Had a couple of shifty runs last year. I’m interested to see more.
It’s clear the Giants want another RB
Rudy5757 : 4/21/2024 7:38 pm : link
We had visits with several FA backs. We lost 2 backs and signed one. Gray and Brightwell weren’t even 2nd on the depth chart. It’s more likely that Brightwell is gone this season than it is that he sees significant carries. We also need camp bodies.

I believe that the Giants will add a few more RBs either in the draft or UDFA. But I think a vet will be brought in to compete. Singletary has never been a workhouse back. There most likely will be 3 guys carrying the load.
If they had traded saquon
DavidinBMNY : 4/21/2024 7:41 pm : link
Then we would have mor game film on some of these guys.
They didn't even trust Gray when Barkley got hurt
Blue Dog : 4/21/2024 7:50 pm : link
You can't count on a 5th rounder being a big piece of the offense and go into the season with that as your game plan. It isn't like his season went like Isiah Pacheco. Singletary can't carry a run game, RB2 is important, Gray and Brightwell have never shown anything at the NFL level yet.

Any game film of them running behind last year's OL is basically useless.
Gray
mavric : 4/21/2024 7:56 pm : link
was a rookie, and few teams put the ball in the hands of a rookie, especially when they have the option of proven Barkley.
As far as Brightwell goes, I think he was one of the better ST players, so he might stick on that alone as they are trying to upgrade ST play.
watching Gray's college film after we drafted him,
Del Shofner : 4/21/2024 7:57 pm : link
I felt optimistic about him - he always made the first guy miss, at least in college. I think that's why they tried him at PR, a disaster since he doesn't have the punt-catching skill. Let's see what he can do if he gets more carries and is behind a better OL....
The Giants
Y28 : 4/21/2024 7:58 pm : link
went from a running back coach in his 1st year in the NFL to hiring Joel Thomas, with his 9 years of very successful NFL coaching experience in New Orleans.

I am confident there is a plan in place dependent on how things fall next weekend.
As it stands now they'll get their chances cause Singletary.....
Walker Gillette : 4/21/2024 8:25 pm : link
Is nothing close to special and is 5'7" 200 who and not exactly the type of horse you try to ride to victory..More of a draw/change of pace guy.
The way Daboll and Kafka used the running game
ThreePoints : 4/21/2024 8:27 pm : link
Was really dumb late in the season.

I’ll say this. This regime is to blame if the running game stinks this year. They had the chance to develop the running backs and they didn’t. If Gray has another bad year, it’s in Daboll.

We haven’t forgotten about them but Brian Daboll sure did.

Is there actually any evidence that there were teams offering to trade for him?

Few teams have to rely on their third string QB for multiple games. Giants did.

Why they didn’t give Gray more carries late was just so stupid.
Gray needs to get better at pass blocking
BrianC : 4/21/2024 8:40 pm : link
before he can get any significant playing time. Hopefully we fix that problem this year.
A lot of BBIers
M.S. : 4/21/2024 8:46 pm : link

are way, way too harsh about Eric Gray.

Way!
Gray looked bad all year
Biteymax22 : 4/21/2024 8:47 pm : link
Then in the last game had a run where he displayed burst I didn’t see all season, if the new RB coach can “unlock” that, he has some potential.

Brightwell is a role player. He’s good on specials, doesn’t hurt the team when he’s put in the game and can be functional in a lot of different ways. You need guys like him on the roster, unfortunately they’re also some of the first guys to go in numbers crunch situations.
In Gray's college tape
Bill in UT : 4/21/2024 9:02 pm : link
he was quick and elusive at the los and next level. He showed none of that last year, but that could just be because the OL sucked. I haven't given up on him yet, but he still needs to prove it. Brightwell, I'm afraid, may be no more than a ST guy
Brightwell isn’t part of our future - didn’t show anything last year
Formerly TD : 4/21/2024 9:08 pm : link
Gray could be part of a RBBC but he is a ? We need another mid-round RB to round out our RBBC with Montgomery. If Gray pans out we have another earth/wind/fire situation, which is a great situation to have.
Brightwell has been here long enough to make an impact
PatersonPlank : 4/21/2024 10:30 pm : link
he's not the guy IMO

Gray needs another year, he didn't get much of a chance to show last season. Frankly I don't know what he can do at this point.
The Giants sure need a couple of these late round guys
Walker Gillette : 4/21/2024 10:34 pm : link
to become real contributors, it hasn't happened in a long time and it's what usually pushes teams over the top. It's folly to expect much from 5th & 7th round draft choices but in Grays case the position is so devalued that maybe he can be a valuable part of a tandem. Seemed like the 22 &23 draft had some contenders and I do like that McFadden makes some splashy plays but it's still early so we can hope.
Brightwell did well in limited opportunities in 2022. He showed
Ivan15 : 4/21/2024 10:47 pm : link
Ability to run inside or outside, and got first downs in short yardage. He was hurt for most of 2023. He needs another look.

Gray had limited production in 2023. He seemed to like to run left and gained a little yardage.

Brightwell, Gray and Corbin needs to show something in training camp. One of them may hit.
The entire running game is pedestrian, at best ...
Manny in CA : 4/22/2024 12:14 am : link

That's by calculated choice. It's all about the passing game, it works at Buffalo, sort of.

How does a guy who only has 17 carries look bad all year. That averages to 1 carry per game. Are you saying He looked bad in that one carry he had each game?

17 carries for 48 yards

That’s all well and good. Then why invest a draft pick in Eric Gray? Why sign Singletary?

Probably could have gotten the same production for less. Just sign some against running back for cheap, like they did under Judge.
