Dreaming of a productive draft haul . . . check these out

3000_MilesToMeadowlands : 4/22/2024 1:11 am
Best single team draft hauls since the merger (I put a premium on drafts that led to multiple playoff/championship appearances): be nice if Schoen & Co. could get anything approaching these . . . round selected in parenthesis.

1974 Pittsburgh Steelers (The Gold Standard - four Hall of Famers in one draft): Lynn Swann (1), Jack Lambert (2), John Stallworth (4), Mike Webster (5)

1986 SF 49ers (a wheeling & dealing extravaganza) – started out with one pick each in round 1-4, and after multiple trades down by John McVay (Sean’s Grandfather) & Bill Walsh turned that into this (other players were picked, but these all panned out): Larry Roberts (2), Tom Rathman (3), Tim McKyer (3), John Taylor (3), Charles Haley (4), Steve Wallace (4), Kevin Fagan (4), Don Griffin (6). Six longtime starters and a key longtime starter/backup in Larry Roberts all on the team until 1993 at least (except Haley, the HoFer - traded in Aug. 1992). This set the “trade-down” bar just about out of reach.

1991 Dallas Cowboys (Jimmy with 16 picks in 12 rounds – Thanks Minnesota): Russell Maryland (1), Alvin Harper (1) Kelvin Pritchett (1), Dixon Edwards (2), Godfrey Myles (3), Erik Williams (3), Leon Lett (7), Larry Brown (12). Pritchett was immediately traded to Detroit for 3 picks that became Dixon Edwards and two JAGs.

1981 Washington Redskins (an OL/DL tour de force) – Mark May (1), Russ Grimm (2), Dexter Manley (5), Charlie Brown (8), Darryl Grant (9), Clint Didier (12). Bobby Beathard was “en fuego” and helped set them up for that 1982-1991 run.

1983 Chicago Bears (Jim Finks finds 2 HoFers): Jimbo Covert(1), Willie Gault (1), Mike Richardson (2), Dave Duerson (3), Tom Thayer (4), Richard Dent (8), Mark Bortz (8).

1996 Baltimore Ravens (Ozzie working the board - 2 HoFers): Jonathan Ogden (1), Ray Lewis (1), DeRon Jenkins (2), Jermaine Lewis (5)

2012 Seattle Seahawks (Andrew Luck?, RGIII? . . . over-rated!!)) – Bruce Irvin (1), Bobby Wagner (2), Russell Wilson (3), Robert Turbin (4), Jeremy Lane (6), JR Sweezy (7). 2010 great draft too, but Wilson in 3rd puts this one on top.

2017 NE Saints (Every guy Loomis picks pans out): Marshawn Lattimore (1), Ryan Ramczyk (1), Marcus Williams (2), Alvin Kamara (3), Alex Anzalone (3), Trey Hendrickson (3), Al-Quadin Muhammad (6)

2018 Baltimore Ravens (this club can draft): Hayden Hurst (1), Lamar Jackson (1), Orlando Brown (3), Mark Andrews (3), DeShon Elloitt (6), Bradley Bozeman (6), Zach Sieler (7)

1995 NE Patriots (Tuna hits the grocery store hard): Ty Law (1), Ted Johnson (2), Curtis Martin (3), Jimmy Hitchcock (3), Dave Wohlabaugh (4). Love this is better than any BB draft (even 2003).

1985 Buffalo Bills (2 HoFers): Bruce Smith (1), Frank Reich (3), Andre Reed (4)

1995 TB Buccaneers (2 HoFers, not much else, but so what?): Warren Sapp (1), Derrick Brooks (1)

1984 NY Giants (had to throw this one in): Carl Banks (1), William Roberts (2), Jeff Hostetler (3), Gary Reasons (4), and these were the only 4 picks by George Young that year (his 1993 draft was notable with Strahan & Armstead along with 1981: LT, Billy Ard & Byron Hunt)

2000 NY Jets (Parcells with FOUR 1st rounders): Shaun Ellis (1), John Abraham (1), Chad Pennington (1), Anthony Becht (1), Laveranues Coles (3)

BTW: there were some legendary draft hauls pre-merger . . . 1964 Dallas, 1958 Green Bay & 1957 Cleveland all with 3 HoFers.

Lastly, here are some (not all) recent multi-year draft runs that loaded up teams with talent:
1989-1992 Dallas Cowboys . . . Jimmy and his draft chart goes to work. Should have had another title or two without the internal war of egos, as far as multi-year draft runs go . . . hard to beat this one (except maybe the next one).
1969-1974 Pittsburgh Steelers (8 HoFers, and 1971 & 1973 not getting them much)
2016-2020 Kansas City Chiefs
2003-2008 New York Giants
2010-2012 Seattle Seahawks

Marc Ross and Chris Mara.
In 2000 the Jets had FOUR 1st round picks
sb from NYT Forum : 4/22/2024 9:53 am : link
...That's not a fair comparison.

Meanwhile, the added 4 first round picks to a team that went to the AFC Championship Game two years before... And won only two playoff games in the next 5 years.
i like looking more recent

a few from last couple years (we all know houston got stroud, anderson, tank so i skipped them):

detroit did pretty good moving down from #6 gaining 4 starters, 2 pro bowl, in the top 50 picks:

Quote:
Draft picks

Alabama RB Jahmyr Gibbs (No. 12 overall)
Iowa LB Jack Campbell (No. 18)
Iowa TE Sam LaPorta (No. 34)
Alabama DB Brian Branch (No. 45)
Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker (No. 68)
Western Kentucky DT Brodric Martin (No. 96)
William & Mary OG Colby Sorsdal (No. 152)
North Carolina WR Antoine Green (No. 219)

rams had no first round pick but still drafted 4 starters including a pro bowler in puka:

Quote:
Draft picks

TCU OG Steve Avila (No. 36 overall)
Tennessee edge Byron Young (No. 77)
Wake Forest DT Kobie Turner (No. 89)
Georgia QB Stetson Bennett (No. 128)
Appalachian State LB Nick Hampton (No. 161)
Georgia OT Warren McClendon Jr. (No. 174)
Clemson TE Davis Allen (No. 175)
BYU WR Puka Nacua (No. 177)
TCU CB Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomlinson (No. 182)
Nebraska edge Ochaun Mathis (No. 189)
Mississippi RB Zach Evans (No. 215)
Wingate P Ethan Evans (No. 223)
Oklahoma State S Jason Taylor II (No. 234)
Toledo DT Desjuan Johnson (No. 259)

Coming out of a draft with a stud CB and stud Wr pretty good work by SEA as usual.

Quote:
Draft picks

Illinois CB Devon Witherspoon (No. 5 overall)
Ohio State WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba (No. 20)
Auburn edge Derick Hall (No. 37)
UCLA RB Zach Charbonnet (No. 52)
LSU OG Anthony Bradford (No. 108)
Mississippi State DT Cameron Young (No. 123)
Michigan DE Mike Morris (No. 151)
Michigan C Olu Oluwatimi (No. 154)
New Mexico S Jerrick Reed II (No. 198)
Georgia RB Kenny McIntosh (No. 237)

in 2022 we know the cowboys draft board got a lot of play here because they had thibs/neal 1/2 but it looks like the rest of it worked out pretty good as well - i count 3 starters and i think 2 made the pro bowl (bland/ferguson) in year 2:

Quote:
Draft picks

Tulsa OT Tyler Smith (No. 24 overall)
Ole Miss DE Sam Williams (No. 56 overall)
South Alabama WR Jalen Tolbert (No. 88 overall)
Wisconsin TE Jake Ferguson (No. 129 overall)
North Dakota OT Matt Waletzko (No. 155 overall)
Fresno State CB DaRon Bland (No. 167 overall)
LSU LB Damone Clark (No. 176 overall)
Arkansas DT John Ridgeway (No. 178 overall)
Oklahoma State LB Devin Harper (No. 193 overall)

some busts in here too but mcduffie was a stud on 2 SB defenses, karlaftis, chenal, and cook are starters, and pacheco obviously a steal. basically 25% of their starting lineup in b2b SBs selected 2 years ago.

Quote:
Draft picks

Washington CB Trent McDuffie (No. 21 overall)
Purdue Edge George Karlaftis (No. 30 overall)
Western Michigan WR Skyy Moore (No. 54 overall)
Cincinnati S Bryan Cook (No. 62 overall)
Wisconsin LB Leo Chenal (No. 103 overall)
Fayetteville State CB Joshua Williams (No. 135 overall)
Kentucky OT Darian Kinnard (No. 145 overall)
Washington State CB Jaylen Watson (No. 243 overall)
Rutgers RB Isiah Pacheco (No. 251 overall)
Marshall CB Nazeeh Johnson (No. 259 overall)

obviously boosted by 3 FRPs but still sauce, wilson, johnson, breece as the first 4 picks, wow. imagine that group instead of neal/thibs/wandale/ezeudu (who all went top 60 same year). even if you take out sauce they could have gone thibs, wilson, breece (pick that took breece was giants pick after trade down).

Quote:
Draft picks

Cincinnati CB Sauce Gardner (No. 4 overall)
Ohio State WR Garrett Wilson (No. 10 overall)
Florida State Edge Jermaine Johnson II (No. 26 overall)
Iowa State RB Breece Hall (No. 36 overall)
Ohio State TE Jeremy Ruckert (No. 101 overall)
Louisiana OT Max Mitchell (No. 112 overall)
Texas A&M DE Micheal Clemons (No. 117 overall)

freaking seattle...again. this is what like 6 starters? woolen and a few others close to pro bowl level:

Quote:
Draft picks

Mississippi State OT Charles Cross (No. 9 overall)
Minnesota Edge Boye Mafe (No. 40 overall)
Michigan State RB Kenneth Walker III (No. 41 overall)
Washington State OT Abraham Lucas (No. 72 overall)
Cincinnati CB Coby Bryant (No. 109 overall)
UTSA CB Tariq Woolen (No. 153 overall)
