Do People Genuinely Like the Draft Buildup

Essex : 4/22/2024 10:07 am
and by buildup, I mean the daily info from dozens of sources with all the conflicting information. I just find the whole thing so tedious and a waste of time. That is not to say, the scouting reports (like SY and the guys at NFL.com among others) isn't useful or worth my time, it is-- just the "NEWS" that we get regarding the draft and who teams will pic becomes so circular that it becomes a total waste of time imo.

Over the top, but damn is it entertaining.
Usually, yes
UberAlias : 4/22/2024 10:09 am : link
A little bit of burn out on it this year though, if we're being honest.
Yup, better than the regular season in a lot of ways

offseason is lots of fun, this week is peak.

Let me also put it this way. The season very well could be over by Halloween again.

This may be our real football season.
I love it

And judging by the number of comments and views on Sy's QB evaluation thread, I don't think I'm the only one.
it's unavoidable and it passes the time until the draft
Eric on Li : 4/22/2024 10:11 am : link
the draft is worth the build up so i think this answer depends on whatever ones' feelings are for the draft itself.
Yes, I love it
Sean : 4/22/2024 10:11 am : link
It's always amplified when QB is part of the discussion too.

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 4/22/2024 10:11 am : link
Halloween? Hell, most of seasons are DOA by October 1st.

that is part of the point, I am so sick and tired of our biggest drama coming in April as opposed to December, January and February. Last year was a welcome respite from this seemingly annual crap over the last dozen or so years.
and for the love of God

it put a semi-damper on the endless Daniel Jones threads.
It is fun overall
jvm52106 : 4/22/2024 10:14 am : link
and in some ways really fun to look back on later. Its all conjecture at this point (from almost anyone) but, I think the intrigue is back. Teams are more cognizant of the internet and social media and the whole league loves to have stuff out there just to get folks talking, repeating, sharing etc...

Yes! Very well said. A huge waste of time, but I couldn't be more entertained by the lead-up to the draft.
Draft day!
CountryGiant : 4/22/2024 10:25 am : link
I get excited every year for the draft. My favorite team is going to get new (hopefully better) players. Hope springs eternal. And if we're lucky, we won't be looking forward to free agency and the 2025 draft by October.

If we don't take a QB there's a good chance they're going to get worse...
It's more than a waste of time - it's very tedious. But it sucks me
Ira : 4/22/2024 10:29 am : link
in every year - this year especially.
I don’t mind the draft tidbits from insiders,
Section331 : 4/22/2024 10:30 am : link
even if they contradict each other. The part of the pre-draft process that I find tiresome are all of the mock drafts, 99% of which involve no inside information, just a wish list for the author.
Once we get within 10 days or so
bceagle05 : 4/22/2024 10:30 am : link
I feel like we’re all gonna find out soon enough anyway, so I tune it out a bit. Thursday will be fun though.
Oversaturated
gpat1031 : 4/22/2024 10:32 am : link
At some point all the commentators are saying the same things or they are flip flopping to vary not putting out the same mocks. Be glad when it's over.
Then the post draft coverage begins...lol

The next tranche is going to be "should we play Jones some in order to create some draft stock or just sit him?"
Only if we keep score

I actually go through draft withdrawal pretty quickly. After the mini-camp, there is hardly any news until the OTAs start.

Enjoy this because the football news dries up pretty quickly.
I pop onto this site during this time more than any other time of year
George from PA : 4/22/2024 10:36 am : link
.....that the actual draft turns out to be anticlimactic.

I see them moving, wheeling and dealing....filling all their holes....

Last year, felt like draft flowed well....outcome still TBD.

I just hope draft flows well for the Giants!

+1

The stretch between the draft and OTAs is tough. Especially if you don't have much interest in baseball (I used to be a big fan, now...meh).

I take most, if not all, of the nuggets we hear from the pre-draft commentators with a grain of salt, but I still love it.

It is undoubtedly one of my favorite times of the year. I can't get enough of it.
I love it
auxelectric : 4/22/2024 10:49 am : link
granted I love it more when the pick is lower in the draft than the top 6. There's too much smoke when you're this high and I gets exhausting.
This is great!
ZogZerg : 4/22/2024 10:51 am : link
You have to remember this is a unique year for the Giants. Need a QB and WR and both groups have high rated guys for the Giants to choose from.

So many factors.
I've basically been avoiding thread
Bill in UT : 4/22/2024 10:51 am : link
that about things that only Joe Schoen and his inner circle know. There are so many ways that this draft could go and I'm not going to read thousands of guesses, from members or the press, that really tell me nothing of value. But TEHO
btw, I have followed closely in previous years,
Bill in UT : 4/22/2024 10:53 am : link
this year just feels like a total crapshoot

THIS ^

It has been my opinion from the start that even Joe won't make a final decision until he's on the clock.
This year does seem to be never-ending . . .
3000_MilesToMeadowlands : 4/22/2024 11:00 am : link
Even 2018 was no this bad with all the scenarios, predictions and asshat Olympics . . . maybe because NY had the 2 pick in 2018. This year with all the QBs & WRs and the 6th pick - seems even more ramped up.
Outside the start of training camp and the season

It’s the best time for football
I genuinely like it
bigbluehoya : 4/22/2024 11:20 am : link
but I genuinely hate that it's so long.

Draft is too late. By a lot.
I love to research prospects and people's opinion on prospects
SteelGiant : 4/22/2024 11:23 am : link
but I am not a fan of
"Per source X, team X likes/dislikes player X"

Even if source X is the GM themselves, you dont even know if its a truthful statement or its to cause a diversion. (unless its a Gettleman/Reese regime, then maybe there is credence)

I like Mock drafts to give a sense where most people rank players but ultimately they are resourced from what they hear from teams/agents which may or may not be true because they have their own reasons for leaking such info.

Love write-ups from people like Sy and others on their opinions, that is all good stuff.
Recently, it has been the most fun time

to be a Giants fan. Draft time and August, and then things start to suck.
Draft build up
Cheech d : 4/22/2024 11:55 am : link
I enjoy it… I’ve been a draftnick since 79 when we took Simms. That year my hope was Otis Anderson in the first and Montana in the second. I was a Joel Bucshbaum follower during the draft process for many years, and I think he was the best to ever cover it.
It’s a hopeful time regardless of the true outcome.
Also loved George Young interviews pre and post draft. He was quite a character!
I loved the first week of it
US1 Giants : 4/22/2024 11:57 am : link
Have grown very tired of it. Can't wait for Thursday night.
Once we hit April I'm done with it....
Simms11 : 4/22/2024 12:10 pm : link
Too many mocks and opinions. I'd love the draft to start first week of April.

It's entertainment, that's all any of this is. You could call it a waste of time or you could call it quality entertainment. I love it, a time when all the possibilities exist before the cold reality crashes down by October (at least for us Giants fans)
I certainly do enjoy it. and until the Giants consistently contend
Giants61 : 4/22/2024 12:38 pm : link
with better records, unfortunately the pre-draft is fun
I enjoy although it is always bitter-sweet from another losing season.
ThomasG : 4/22/2024 12:41 pm : link
I would have loved this year if we hadn't beaten Washington and JJ McCarthy stayed in school.
Dislike
jhibb : 4/22/2024 12:42 pm : link
And basically it comes down to the fact that there's nothing good (IMHO) about these scenarios:

A) reporters & "insiders" don't know diddly but act like they do to string the public along

B) some reporters & "insiders" don't know diddly and others are given false information to confuse the matter, in which case we shouldn't give credence to any of it

C) some reporters and/or "insiders" actually have legitimate information about the Giants' plans - this possibility upsets me the most. I wish people with actual knowledge would just keep it zipped. I mean, a lot of the same fans that complain that the Giants telegraph their plans (like for D.Smith) then go digging and pleading every year for any nugget of information pointing to their plans. Drives me nuts and I wish fans would just have patience and wait and see what happens instead of feeding into all of this.

if the rumors are ones I like... Then I love it. If they are rumors I don't like then I don't. Either way I can't wait until Thursday. This is going to be probably the most crazy draft since 2004 and that is saying something.
Like everything else, it's too much.
David B. : 4/22/2024 10:23 pm : link
I could do with about 1/10th of it. Every year it seems like the number of draft experts on YouTube expands exponentially. There's only a few people who's info and opinion I respect and listen to every year.

This year has been particularly bad with all of the talking media heads banging the drum for the Giants to take a QB.

This draft can't come soon enough -- just so the rampant speculation stops. Can't wait to move on to the knee-jerk, overreaction phase. To give out what everyone freely acknowledges are pointless/too-soon draft grades, but they're all compelled do it anyway. Where all of the talking media heads who banged the drum for the Giants to take a QB will give them a shitty draft grade if they didn't take a QB, and a good grade if they do.

The NFL draft coverage has become a spectacular microcosm of everything that's wrong with the 24 hour news cycle. Too many people paid to talk too much, ad nauseam, for too many hours a day.
