Russini: Kraft heavily involved in decision to pick/trade

@DMRussini
The New England Patriots are listening and taking calls from teams looking to move into 3.

While GM Eliot Wolf is running point, I’m told Patriots’ President Jonathan Kraft is heavily involved in the decision making.
JJM at 3 might be a money making bet,

What are the odds right now?

As of this minute, I think they stay at 3 & take a QB. But ask me in an hour and I might feel differently.
No surprise the Krafts think they are geniuses

Says Kraft is in full bloom love with JJM while Wolf and Co prefer a trade down. He says he knows some people connected to Kraft. If this is the case, Kraft will likely get his way for JJM at 3.
Of course they are

They were involved ( or atleast tried to be) with Bill Belichick. You don't think they will be involved now? This is good news for the Giants.

That's who I think they're gonna take. At once point I thought they'd make a trade, but now I think they want a QB at 3. Kraft is feeling himself---and I don't blame him. He's taken a back seat to BB for nearly a quarter of a century. It must feel good to have his team back, as Pat Bowlen once said after firing Dan Reeves after the 1992 season.

I think Kraft thinks he needs a QB to sell the rebuild and he hasn't named a GM yet, even though Ron Wolf's kid is doing most of the GMing, because he wants the final call. The rumors about the Pats not being sold on Drake Maye to me are too much to ignore. I think Kraft fell in full bloom love after meeting and greeting with JJM. He's very sentimental and his moves are easily telegraphed. Everyone knew he was gonna hire Mayo as his next HC. Kraft didn't even bother interviewing Vrabel when he came loose. I think the first three picks are as follows (QBs going 1-2-3):

Chicago - Caleb Williams
Washington - Daniels
New England - JJM
.

I'm sure Pats fans are thrilled to hear this. An 82 year old man who can barely put a sentence together and pops Viagra before heading to $60 strip mall rub and tugs, heavily involved in negotiating their most important draft pick in decades.

This is my prediction too. Might be smart to put some money on JJM at 3.

remember the Patriots hired Ben McAdoo in January as a Senior Offensive Consultant. Clearly his assignment is to evaluate all QBs in this draft.

Say what you want about McAdoo, but he has been outstanding in evaluating QBs.

I really believe NE takes a QB

And if McAdoo recommends to NE to stay away from the 2 left, that’s a huge flag why I won’t trade up w them
So then
IchabodGiant : 4/22/2024 2:10 pm : link
MIN pays a King's ransom for the 4 spot? Then we either move down or take a WR.

I think I'd prefer a trade down (if we can't get to 4 ourselves for Maye). That gives us the chance to take Penix/Nix, then a WR with Minnesota's second 1st round pick.

and I'll stand corrected if need be, but Wolf is acting GM.

He hasn't officially been given the title, yet.
So if Maye is the true top target for NYG
Rjanyg : 4/22/2024 2:25 pm : link
You would have to think Schoen can get the deal done. Again, AZ has a ton of draft picks this year. They need to grab a high quality blue chip player. Knowing you can get extra picks including early picks in next years draft while still staying in the top 6 seems much smarter then falling all the way back to 11 and maybe not being able to trade back up.

Who would trade with AZ? Chicago at 9? I don't think TN, ATL will trade back.

You would have to think JS can get Maye if he falls to 4.
...
ryanmkeane : 4/22/2024 2:26 pm : link
There is a very solid chance that Marvin Harrison, Jr is available at 6.
BTW...
bw in dc : 4/22/2024 2:29 pm : link
Whereas there was a cacophony of anti-Ohio state sentiment that QBs from Columbus (pre-CJ Stroud) were taboo as NFL prospects, I could see Kraft being enamored with McCarthy because of Michigan. Brady went there, Griese was a good NFL QB, Grbac was decent, Henne was decent, etc.
I never thought the Pats would trade down.
BigBlueNH : 4/22/2024 2:31 pm : link
Theyve waited decades to pick this high. They desperately need a QB. Kraft desperately wants a QB. And, if they trade down, there's no guarantee the guy they like won't be scooped up by the Giants or Vikings in a trade up.

I will be shocked if they don't make this pick.

How has Mcadoo been outstanding at evaluating QBs? I know he reportedly liked Mahomes but what else? Am I missing something?

And I doubt he has much say in this draft.

No chance. He is the top rated player in the draft.
Kraft should trade for Derrick Deshaun Watson
solarmike : 4/22/2024 2:53 pm : link

Then he can take him out for a "Krafty" to celebrate the union.

When you don't know what your doing, you will ruin the company.

I think he started it with the Mayo promotion to HC.

Dark times ahead for that franchise IMO.

I agree. But if they don't think JJM or Maye can be the real deal and someone wants to trade for them, they should absolutely trade down.

That is when you know the owner is heavily involved in personnel decisions. When do you know? When reporters are literally saying, “the owner is heavily involved in personnel decision-making.” And how would reporters know this? Because owners can’t lie in the shadows quietly pulling strings, that’s why. Ego.

If Pats take JJM I hope the Giants do what they need to do to get

Maye at 4. This years 2 with next years 3 or even this years 3 with next years 1 if necessary. I don't want to be looking at him for the next few years thinking what could have been. Just get him in Giant blue.

That's silly. Every owner is the same person and behaves the same way? Owners can't exert influence if it isn't directly reported by the press?

Sure there are some exceptions, but no, not really not without someone finding out the truth. If an owner is making moves and dictating personnel decision making, you're going to know about it before too long.

Occam's razor. Being up in New England, I'm sure you hear more things than folks elsewhere about the Pats.
