NFT: why do we use the term asshat?

snickers : 4/22/2024 6:32 pm
I was curious about the term asshat as we use it on BBI. The dictionary defines the term in a pejorative manner as someone who is stupid or obnoxious, unlikeable. Is this what we think of those that have insider info? Why do we persist with this term as it does not seem to have any redeeming quality? Maybe this was defined previously but can not seem to come up with the reason why. Fire away.
asshat in the urban dictionary

Asshat is one of a family of slang terms insulting “idiots” or “jerks” with terms related to ass and/or head: assface, asshead, asshole, blockhead, and dumbhead, among others. Asshead, for instance, was used to mean “fool” in the 16th century, though ass is also historically associated with “donkey” in addition to “butt.”

As a popular alternative to asshole and similar terms, asshat emerged at least by the early 2000s. The first entry on Urban Dictionary appears in 2002, defining the term as “One who has their head up their ass. Thus wearing their ass as a hat.” The term alludes to other expressions like “pull your head out of your own ass” or “your head is so far up your ass,” ways of saying a person is too self-absorbed or oblivious to their surroundings, hence “stupid.”

I recall it being coined...

for insiders at BBI a long, long time ago. Maybe in the late '90s with SOTI and others...?

I actually remember the thread when the board was looking for a name to call insiders. I think maybe Rob in NYC and Joey came up with it...?

I assume you mean Rob?

Rob was awesome. Great acerbic wit and he didn't mince words. Very economical with his thoughts.

An incredible ability to nick, slice and carve you up. I was one the wrong end of a few of those... ;)
i think it was voted on probably about 10 years ago?

as i recall in the 10 years or so following gloveone, and a bunch of gloveone impersonators, there were all kinds of names for 'insiders' and eventually eric (from bbi) put it up to a vote to decide what they were called and asshat won.
I remember a vote

ahh SOTI. Guy was a great inside source. The 2012ers did a nice job running him off.

One of the many fine NY colloquialisms.

Or you're talking through your hat.

(well longer as a lurker)and I am not sure how long it has been in use.
From time to time someone asks where it came from and I just never remember, but a couple posters know the real story.
Not sure if it’s the first use of the phrase

But from Ed McKinney in the 1976 file “The Outlaw Josef Wales”:

“Now get in line before I kick you so hard you'll wear your ass for a hat.”

was a user named gloveone that laid out the terms for the Eli Manning trade right before the draft. Someone impersonated them the next offseason (maybe next two offseasons?), there was a lot of speculation on whether they were original gloveone and turned out that they weren't. Asshat was coined to identify those with insider knowledge, but there has been history on BBI of insiders being driven off of the board because of posters getting too personal and angry when their info turned out to be wrong (SOTI being the most famous but I think he may have left before gloveone's time?), so the term kind of covers both those giving fake info and actual insiders.
Amazing Thread

It was definitely voted on, sometime after march 2005. I remember voting for one of the other options, lol

The vote made the term "official" as part of the BBI vernacular, but, as I mentioned earlier, I thought it was being used quite a bit on the board in the late '90s when the insiders started to make their appearances...
It's because...
Bill E : 4/22/2024 11:53 pm : link
..most of the so called asshats have no real inside info.
They are regular posters who are simply following twitter feeds and the like, and passing that off as inside info.
But in reality, it is just an educated guess, and they are usually wrong.

There should be a different name for those who really have some inside info.

I agree with Bill E
Gman11 : 4/23/2024 6:39 am : link
It was a name used for people that pretended to have inside information and they were really just spouting off about something they read on the internet.

It then became a term used for anyone with inside information, even the legitimate ones.
I could have sworn
stoneman : 4/23/2024 7:33 am : link
that someone was referring to an insider with info and mistyped assh-le (auto-correct ?), and it became the new term that was voted on for all insider info'ers. Just my recollection of Pete's Corner times.
