Rempe got in the Capitals' heads by just playing hockey. They were waiting to bait him into a fight he had no intention of getting into.
How does Washington justify a roster spot for a bum like McIlrath? It's because he was there to fight and when he didn't all he became was a pylon to skate around.

Yup, and I expect they’ll step up the chippiness even more tonight and the rest of the series. They know they don’t have the talent to stay with the Rangers long, they’re only chance of making it a long series is to try and throw the Rangers off their game by turning it into a scrap

McIlrath is like their 8th defenseman. Injuries have caught up to them, and they weren't too deep to start with.
for McIlrath, because 4 of their top 6 D are out/gone. Sandin and Jensen are recovering from injuries, Bear is in player assistance program, and Edmundson was traded at the deadline. It's that simple, nothing to do with him being in there to fight. And then he played even more minutes than expected when his D partner Iorio got hurt and left game after only 3 shifts.
Hockey playoff series can flip on a dime. We all remember the Devils series last year. But the Caps stink, worst team in the playoffs. If the Rangers are planning on making a run these playoffs they beat the Caps in 4-5. No excuses. LGR!
keep it going. play smart, tough hockey, no bullshit.
this series ends in DC Sunday night. My biggest concern at this point is Wilson injuring someone on a cheap shot, like he tried to do when he Paul Bunyan'ed Igor in the lower back the other night. Luckily, the Rangers are not a team that can be pushed around, A. because they have the players to push back, and B. because I believe they have a coach that will keep them focused on the bigger picture.
That was outrageous how they lost that game. Shot attempts were 110-28 in Carolina's favor, and shots on goal were 29-5 from the moment the Islanders scored their 3rd goal. Carolina's shot attempt numbers are always inflated in my opinion, because they generally don't represent much in the way of dangerous chances, but that is absolutely insane.

I still can't believe Shesty played that puck out of his glove in the final 2 minutes. I was losing my mind.
Suppose it's a good sign to win that style of game on a night where they didn't play anything close to their best hockey.
I don't think the officiating has been lopsided in the series thus far, but it has surely been awful in the sense that the players have no idea what to expect. It's ticky-tack for stretches, and then there are blatant cross-checks and high sticks going un-called with zebras staring right at it. And it doesn't seem to be at all related to the time remaining in the game. Just totally random.
they took care of business, but it was much more difficult than
it should been because Wennberg made the dumb play of the month that lead directly to the 3rd Caps goal. WTF was he thinking stickhandling at the caps blue line with no help. Dump the fucking puck deep and forecheck. The Caps were done and that gave them the spark.
Glad to see Mika returning to form. With he and Trocheck playing well they're a really tough match up.
Wennberg’s line played a solid game aside from that
Is such a cry baby, and he's a dirty player. Ask yourself, would Panarin make that hit if Rempe isn't on the team? I'd say no, that's why you have a guy like him playing.
As for the game, they responded when they needed to. They woke up in the first after the slow start. The inability to clear at the end was nerve-racking. Let's see how they play on the road.

Do the Caps have 0 confidence in themselves? Holy shit it looks like their only offensive strategy is gooning it up lol

Ovechkin looks like he was mailing it in at times. He was so frustrated by the Rangers suffocating pressure. They were on him like white on rice. When Zibanejad took the puck away from him on the K'Andre goal, he skated into the defensive zone like his controller had lost connection.

I text my dad and uncle right after that goal and said that was one of the most brutal turnovers I've ever seen Ovechkin commit. Like you said, it's like his controller just gave out. Ovechkin looks old in this series to me.
it should been because Wennberg made the dumb play of the month...Glad to see Mika returning to form. With he and Trocheck playing well they're a really tough match up.
Interesting that he/'first' line had 5 minutes TOI in first period, Trocheck's line paired vs Caps' first. He did look energized. Did Laviolette's explicit 'demotion' of the line fire him up?
I do worry that Wilson/Oshie's dirt is going to get Panarin off his game and muck around his focus.
Agree Hoya's point above, random walk along Goon St.
Oshie is a physical player, but did nothing even borderline, he just plays hard nosed hockey. I say this as an impartial observer (who does have a large bet on the Rangers to win the cup so if anything I want them to win).
Panarin targeted Oshie, they had been jawing all game - probably both games which I have no issue with, in fact I love it - though I do think it was a penalty (but that's another story), but generally you see other teams avoid the head hunting on the star players on the other team because they don't want their stars targeted. You should expect Panarin to get hit in the final two games. If he's going to dish it out he has to be able to take it. Panarin had 18 hits all season.
I'm not talking "goon street" I'm talking physical hockey which is Oshie's brand.
Also, I think the "cheering" for Oshie to be injured was pretty classless and something I expect from Flyers fans more than Rangers fans.
Oshie with a clear but uncalled elbow to Cuylle's jaw as they skated neutral ice, far from the play. And his (or was it Wilson) who wrapped his arm/glove around Panarin's head from behind...resulting scrum, nothing called, but Rempe with hard check on the boards gets two. Zero consistency. I do agree, Panarin has to expect rough stuff and shake it off.

That was Wilson who elbowed Cuylle (unless I missed Oshie do it too - which is possible), but it was also after Cuylle speared Wilson in the family jewels.
Net front scrums (if that's the scrum you refer to) are like Beyond Thunderdome/WWE and it's almost always two-way shit stirring. Teams on offense hover over and around the goalie to get in his head and defensive teams take issue - practically every save is a scrum now in the NHL - in close games. if you're referring to a different scrum I have to say I don't remember every one.
Oshie was on the borderline from the very beginning of the game. Joe (I think) said, “That’s just the type of player he is” and it was still the first period. He’d been acting like a jackass and got his just desserts.
The whole game had a really weird vibe to me as a viewer. It didn’t quite feel like a playoff game. The Caps aren’t a good team and the Rangers played like it was game 75 down the stretch. JMO.
First contact Panarin made was body. Just a hard nosed hockey play. No issue with it
Agreed.
There were two camera angles and one of them clearly showed body first and from what I could tell Oshie was playing the puck or he was making a play to gather it in.
Clearly Oshie was talking trash and attempting to intimidate or get Panarin off his game. The headlock and face wash was just another attempt to do the same.
He appeared less interested in playing hockey and more focused on taking Panarin out of his game.
stop fucking whining about clean or dirty hits. who cares?
that's playoff hockey Suzyn. The key takeaway is that for a change the Rangers skill players are big, tough and can handle themselves. They can take it and dish it out when they have too but they're not intimidated. And they have Cuylle, Rempe, Trouba, Lindgren, Goodrow behind them if things get out of hand.
but we knew who you meant (:
how ya feelin' 'bout tomorrow shock?
Oops.
As for game 3, I feel fine. The Caps aren’t good. They can’t score and they aren’t good enough defensively or at goaltender to win games. Their ability to win is completely dependent on how the Rangers play. Yesterday, I thought the Rangers didn’t play particularly well. But thinking back to the Rangers last Stanley Cup appearance, I’d rather look bad and win a postseason game than look good and lose.
It’s probably not fair to expect a sweep, but there’s no excuse for losing more than one game to the Caps.

I was hoping the Isles would take CAR to at least 6 maybe 7, but after last night I wouldn't be shocked at a sweep. Brutal loss.

agreed! good post
LGR!
It doesn't count when you catch it first...
Me too. I did a double take when I read his name on his jersey. I was like, no, can't be him. A brother or cousin, maybe. Very weird
LFGR
Sigh? The fuck?
I guess there's always one.
Rangers win.
Same. Let's finish this series.
Carbery = Cunt!
My disdain for the Caps has officially been renewed!
LFGR!

Those last few minutes were nerve-racking though. Off to DC up 2-0, that's all that matters here.
they did, that play just pissed me off because he should know better.
