Random ? about the mechanics of GM's contacting each other

FranknWeezer : 4/24/2024 4:40 pm
In the past, land lines and fax machines were how GMs would reach each other on and around draft day. Obviously those days are long gone. We have heard JS refer to "calls and texts" with other GMs to gauge trade interest, set the terms of a trade, etc. Goes without saying that since there's limited time to make picks on draft day, time is of the essence, as is the ability to be assured you can reach someone when you need to.

Does anyone know for certain if this method of contacting one another is done as simply as personal/work cell phone to personal/work cell phone? Seems like there's a ton of room for errors/issues there, with respect to bad signals, network outtages, wrong numbers, dropped calls, busy signals, etc.

Or do you think there's some sort of a group network of the 32 GMs sort of like Signal or Whatsapp, whereby the users are easily identified and reached, there's the ability to private message, send a group message (eg anybody interested in a late round swap?), have a private video chat, etc. Just wondering if there's a more secure/sure way of doing this...one we may or may not be aware of.

Thanks for any intel.
i dont think anyone here knows how this works

have you watched any of the Giants draft videos from the last two years? When they traded for Hyatt Daboll just sent a text to Sean McVay. NFL teams I would imagine have great communication networks with redundt systems avaiable.

Just think about an average game day and the amount of communication that goes on..

Giants.com also has some videos with Crestron who is now their tech/data partner.

Dont see this being an issue for any NFL team
I'm pretty sure all of them have a mobile device

dedicated for contact from other teams during the draft. I can't imagine Joe Schoen is on his personal cell phone trying to close a trade at the top of the draft having to filter past messages from his wife to pick up butter on the way home.

I would imagine there is some roster of contacts for each team and there dedicated numbers for draft day, although the rough parameters of many early deals are likely already in place (or soon will be).

I can't imagine there is any group messaging thing. It has to be individual to individual.
I'm pretty sure

Multiple ways to get a hold of them, I don't think this is an issue anymore unless an entire region experiences a major blackout.

The other issue I could see with a less formal means of contact b/w GM's (cell to cell) would be a situation where someone hacked into an account and started stealing info, making up BS trade offers, etc. Ha.

I bet these guys get all of this ironed out and organized (eg who the backup point of contact is in the event someone can't get through to the GM on draft day) during the Owners' Meetings.

Seemed to indicate that Daboll and Sean McVay were texting about the Hyatt swap. So I suspect it's still all text-based.

Something like a private Slack would be interesting. Easy to see how that could be useful w/ group messages, channels, etc.
Yeah I was thinking Slack too...
