Scouting evaluation

3rd and a cab ride : 4/26/2024 9:52 am
This draft may provide the most public evaluation of the Giants scouting dept ever. They concluded that Nix/Pennix/Mccarthy were not viable 1st round options, but, 3 other teams all believe the opposite.

One of BBI favourite topics - is it bad selections or bad coaching holding back the Giants draft classes may be about to be answered.

You are 100 percent correct.

Will be fascinating to watch.

None of those other groups had Nabers as an option when they were on the clock. All we know for certain is that The Giants selected Nabers over those QBs.

Enamored with the "gotta have one" narrative. It was very clear that the vikings were trying to fall in love with any quarterback. Sean Payton and the broncos wanted to get a quarterback and believe they can fix any issues.

We have a strong front office with schoen, brown and Cowden, who have been part of organizations that scouted and drafted quarterbacks with success. Daboll and kafka have also had success in drafted quarterbacks. Right or wrong, they passed.

I believe they wanted any of the top 3, but weren't sold on the latter 3.

Quarterback is an essential position and they didn't want to take one just because they tried to convince themselves he might be good.

Accorsi was absolutely convinced Eli Manning was that quarterback. I think Gettleman and Shurmur tried to convince themselves Daniel Jones could be good because they needed to find the future beyond Eli Manning.

I think this is definitely an area of uncertainty, but I would say that the tea leaves suggest that the original poster is correct. They were apparently willing to give up a ton to get Drake Maye, but not willing to draft any of the other 3 quarterbacks without a trade. So that makes me think that they had May at a significantly higher tier than the other guys. Now, it's possible that the other guys were also first round grade, but not that high... But we also know that they only had 15 guys with first-round grades. So it is unlikely to me that those three quarterbacks were given first round grades, given the other possible guys.
And you could flip it around the other way (if they went QB)

And say that they took the fourth quarterback in the draft while ignoring what some believe was the best wide receiver in this class, how could they do that???

True but we don't know that the other teams wouldn't have taken Nabers in the same situation. It's all conjecture. Of the 3 JJM is in the most advantageous spot and has the best opportunity to reach his upside. The other 2 will be difficult to evaluate because of their surrounding situation.
I agree that the other teams didnt have to consider Malik

However, you only invest a high 1 in a QB if you think he can be YOUR guy. The Giants eval was nope and three other scouting depts said yes. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

For what its worth I think the Giants made a great pick.
