outside corner who has bounced around, 12 starts, 66 games played, played for 4 different teams (3 last year). started 6 games for the 2021 SB winning rams, including 1 playoff game (appeared in all 4).
looks like he has tackled pretty well as a pro so that's one positive. I remember him being a popular name in the draft.
i'd have signed someone more proven like witherspoon but this isnt too far off. has only given up 4 touchdowns in his whole coverage career, also only 11 missed tackles and 6 penalties. has played 950 snaps outside and 150 at slot.
The David Long Jr we signed played for 3 different teams last year. Makes me think it's a camp body signing but who knows.
in terms of general level he is similar to darnay holmes.
midround pick who made through his full 4 year rookie deal with LAR as an occasional starter (just like Holmes here).
after that contract expired he got a 1.5m deal last year from Vegas, similar to holmes this offseason, then got cut a few times. it looks like he got cut right when AP took over so that's a little bit of a flag.
Summary: Junior entry with two years of starting experience. A First Team All Big 10 defender that may not have the ball-production that some look for, but Long is one of the best pure cover corners in the class. His ability to minimize separation between himself and the receiver on all levels of the route tree is something that will translate to the league right away. His hips are fluid and his feet are light. Long also plays with a pitbull-mentality. He wants to fight his man and shows no hesitation when it comes to mixing it up and playing physical. There is a combination of positive traits here that can really turn in to something at the next level. Quarterbacks rarely want to throw in his direction.
*Kind of the complete opposite from Williams above. Long doesn’t have the most attractive highlight tape but a big part of that is the fact QBs did not want to throw his way. He may be a top 3 man-cover corner in this class and he brings the baller mentality to the table. I believe most have Long as a day 3 pick but if you do end up getting him there, it might be the steal of the draft.
seems like bowen's corners are going to be about limiting separation and playing physical while his safeties are the ball skills guys creating turnovers.
i posted the screenshot from PFF above but it was hard to read. each row is a year with most recent on top so the SB year in LA was 407 snaps outside, 74 in the slot - though he did play more slot in the postseason than the regular season that year when some other DBs got hurt:
Very positive review.Analysts reported a little short 5-10 with short arms but great speed and agility. Ony 34% passes against completed at Michigan draft review - ( New Window )
Our 2nd CB is an open competition, the more the merrier. And what happens when Banks misses time? Will be nice to not have to fully rely on Hawkins or a rookie.
It doesn’t take much to get me hopeful. His resume looks impressive. The write ups and the video Hilary linked are awesome to help us know him better.I think his experience is just what we need. Thanks to Eric in LI and thanks to Hilary….but more Iimportantly, thanks to Joe Schoen for always working to improve our team. I believe 100% in you even if you do make some mistakes.
... this CB competition can be directed in part toward conditioning Nabers to some more aggressive coverages he hasn't seen very much of ... without getting him injured please.
To try out at CB2 and slot. None have ever really been consistently good. We may also employ a rotation based on opponent and not have an actual regular CB2 or slot until someone really steps up.
Anybody have anything (any news) to say about this kid? I know he was only a 6th round pick so I shouldn’t expect much from him….yet he earned the right to start when the season began. Of course that didn’t last long. So, any encouraging update or should I just assume no news is bad news?

NFL Comparison: Stephon Gilmore / NE
I actually was hoping we would grab Sainristil
Wisconsin/Michigan wounds never fully heal.
On Wisconsin!!

I never watched that game. What an ugly play by Murray.
also sticky coverage > ball skills.
seems like bowen's corners are going to be about limiting separation and playing physical while his safeties are the ball skills guys creating turnovers.
What a phenomenal decision by Murray. What could be worse than a safety?
Yup, he's another nickel/slot corner.
Giants really want to nail that down.

long is a backup outside option.
id have signed a more starter outside option but i do think all 3 of mccloud/phillips/flott deserve a shot.
mccloud has looked good every time he's been pressed into action.
flott is still only 22 and has flashed.
phillips is a rookie so who knows. he could be an unexpected stud right away or a depth/st guy.

you're right - i totally forgot him. who knows maybe robinson in the mix too.
nfl teams are allowed to bring 90 players to camp.
there are 32 teams (*90 players = 2880 players).
this is likely a veteran minimum signing.
is your point they should save the money and bring fewer than 90 players to camp?
