A look at some bad Giants offensive statistics

gogiants : 5/4/2024 10:37 am
I have been looking at some statistics that the Giants have been very bad at over the last five seasons. Here are my top three. They show the statistic over the full last five seasons with the best team, the middle team and the giants. The rank is the first number. Then shows the same for the last season only. Next some signs of hope with players.

Yards after the catch
Rk From To Team YAC/Cmp
1 2019 2023 SFO 5.9
16 2019 2023 CLE 4.3
32 2019 2023 NYG 3.7

1 2023 2023 SFO 6.0
16 2023 2023 LAC 4.4
31 2023 2023 NYG 3.4

WR Malik Nabers
7th in YAC: 580
19th in YAC/reception: 6.7 yards

WR Darius Slayton
Slayton had his two best seasons in YAC the last two with the last being his best. Both were well above the 4.4 team averages shown above with 6.0 in 2023 and 5.7 in 2022. In fact over the last two seasons Slayton was the only receiver in the league that had both seasons with a YAC/R of at least 5.5 and a yards before catch/R of at least a 9.0.

Rushing attempts per broken tackles
Rk From To Team Att/Br G
1 2019 2023 CLE 12.0
16 2019 2023 LAR 15.6
32 2019 2023 NYG 26.3

1 2023 2023 PIT 8.3
16 2023 2023 PHI 15.5
30 2023 2023 NYG 25.2

RB Tyrone Tracy Jr
0.18 Broken Tackles per Touch (3rd in class)
There's a reason why he averaged 4.44 yards after contact, which was 1st in the class. He also forced 46 missed tackles (4th in the class at RB). Tyrone Tracy is tied with the best RBs in the PFF college era in missed tackles forced per attempt (0.39).

Devin Singletary
Even Singletary’s worst season for broken tackles per attempt in 2023 his average was significantly better than the Giants average both over the five year span or last year. Here are his numbers.

Year Age Tm G GS Att Yds BrkTkl Att/Br
2019 22 BUF 12 8 151 775 20 7.6
2020 23 BUF 16 16 156 687 9 17.3
2021 24 BUF 17 16 188 870 13 14.5
2022 25 BUF 16 16 177 819 9 19.7
2023 26 HOU 17 10 216 898 10 21.6

Passing Touchdowns
Rk From To Team TD G
1 2019 2023 KAN 176 83
16 2019 2023 LAR 125 83
30 2019 2023 NYG 89 83

1 2023 2023 DAL 36 17
16 2023 2023 WAS 24 17
28 2023 2023 NYG 15 17

TE Theo Johnson
His seven touchdown receptions in 2023 were second in this draft class for tight ends while 15.6% of his career receptions at Penn State were touchdowns (second in the class). Theo Johnson, 6'6", 259 lbs, leads the draft (TE & WR) with a 28.9% red zone target rate.

WR Darius Sayton
Slayton is 35th among active league receivers for receiving touchdowns from 2019 to 2023. He led Giant wide receivers lasts year in receiving touchdowns with 4. Over the seasons 2019-2023, Slayton has sled or tied for lead in touchdowns to Giant wide receivers in 4 of the 5 seasons.

A look at all three together.
For single seasons, from 1917 to 2023, in the regular season, requiring Passing TD % <= 3.4 and Rush Att/Broken Tkl >= 22 and Pass YAC/Cmp <= 4, sorted by descending Season.

Season Team TD% YAC/Cmp Att/Br G
2023 NYG 2.9 3.4 25.2
2022 ARI 2.6 4.0 27.1
2021 NYG 2.5 3.8 46.6
2020 NYG 2.3 3.0 22.2
2018 ARI 3.0 3.2 27.3
2017 CHI 2.7 3.7 22.2
2017 BUF 3.4 3.6 44.3

Sixty-two percent of team’s seasons that were above these minimums in all three for a season had a winning record for those seasons. Over the 7 seasons since 2017 all 32 teams had at least one season above all. The best were the Raiders and Vikings with six seasons. The worst were the Bears, Bengals and Panthers with one season. The Giants had two seasons in 2018 and 2019.

Season Team TD% YAC/Cmp Att/Br
2018 NYG 3.9 4.8 10.1
2019 NYG 4.9 4 19.1

For the teams that were below shown above, Buffalo drafted Josh Allen in 2018 and Devin Singletary in 2019. In 2019 they were above those minimums for all three. The Cardinals drafted Kyler Murray and Andy Isabella in 2019 and were above those minimums that next year. However they have not really fared well and came back to the minimums list.
I think this is the biggest missing

Piece since OBJ left.
If you go back in Giants recent history they had a bunch of WRs(OBJ,Nicks,Cruz, etc) that could take a short route to the house by either breaking a tackle or just ability to make people miss.
Robinson obviously has shown that in the small sample.
Hopefully this is the draft class the elevates these results
