Vested Veterans?

Jaenyg : 5/4/2024 3:18 pm
Anyone know a good way to distinguish vested veterans from non-vested veterans on the roster?

This is the type of question I expect BBB or Y28 to answer but props to anyone else who can help.

I think it is important to know this distinguishment when trying to predict 53 man rosters.
vested vets are players with the four accrued seasons req'd to be UFAs

for example to qualify for a VSB contract a player needs 4 credited seasons.
I believe it's 3 years of credited service.

If you have earned three or more credited seasons since 1993, you are vested, meaning you are entitled to benefits negotiated under the CBA.

it takes 4 to get to UFA though. all rookie deals are 4 years, so the only players whose contracts expire earlier are UDFAs and players who get waived. In those cases those players become RFAs so I don't think they are considered vested yet.

ex. nick mccloud got tendered bc his contract expired but he only has 3 accrued seasons. $0 of his 3m are guaranteed.

they didnt tender Hodgins, but in FA I dont think he was eligible for a VSB because he didnt have his 4 years. he could have signed whatever contract he wanted though since the giants let him become a UFA.
Back to my question

Is there any way to look at the Giants roster and make this distenguishment? I suspect when Giants.com says a player is “4 years”, that may not necessarily mean 4 accrued/credited years.

otc has accrued seasons on each player. a little manual to sort through player by player but that will probably answer the question.

Thanks!

VSB and vested are two different things that are not related. VSB stand for veteran service benefit. It involves the salary cap. Vested involves qualifying for a pension and medical benefits.
