At the time the sense I had was that the giants told Wilson that they would likely be drafting a qb so starting was not a guarantee. I think some reported that they told him that Jones would be the starter but their subsequent actions I think rendered that slightly implausible.
Regardless, even assuming Wilson is semi washed up, do you think the giants FO has some remorse over not being more aggressive given how the draft unfolded?
If he was offered a contract and opted to go with the Steelers Schoen probably shrugged and move on.
Seattle did the right thing....Denver did not.
The Giants did the right thing.....as I am not sure Wilson ego would make him a good back up
The Steelers will be looking for a QB soon
There's the tinfoil hat crowd here, then there's the reality of what's going on.
It was correctly reported he had an "exploratory" meeting with the Giants. It was reported as nothing more than the sides meeting...
The Giants were doing their due diligence, and Russ was doing his should the Steelers meeting fall through.
It was always a long shot - but I love the Giants being open minded and having him see the facility and meet. No harm in it.

This! And here we go again! You have to figure that by that time the Giants had to have had a pretty good idea that they weren't going to get one of the top QBs in the draft. At the same time you had the mob literally screaming 'THE GIANTS ARE DONE WITH JONES!' In fact, if that was the case Wilson would have made a perfect bridge QB yet they chose not to aggressively go after him. Why? See above!
Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see how the mental gymnastics get this one spun.
B
Cut Jones when he eventually passes a physical
Draft McCarthy at 6, no trade up and he is the backup
Wilson at 1.2 would have allowed them to eat Jones cap hit this season and improve at QB . As bad as you think Wilson has been the last 2 years he threw more TDs in 2022 than Jones did and he had 26 TDs last year which would be a career high for Jones.

Great story line, but he was never coming to the Giants...

Read my previous post. Some of you think free agency is like Madden, and any team can sign any player.
He wanted the Steelers and the Steelers wanted him. The guy wanted to win now, and so do they.
The Giants "meeting" was a no risk proposition for both sides...feel out interest in case the Steelers deal fell through.
I can't believe anyone thinks it was anything more than that based on what was reported.
If they had been and said Jones was finished here and a rookie would sit all year. Things might have turned out differently

There is a difference between what an obstinate BBI poster would say and an NFL GM.
I don't see how having both Fields and Wilson works for a whole season neither wants to sit.
i agree he was always going to pitt, but i think he's going to do pretty good there. the personnel fits, they have a good defense, tomlin is a strong coach.
So my guess is Wilson will lead the Steelers to the playoffs this year and have a pro bowl calibre year under Tomlin. Imagine what Daboll could have cooked up for Russ especially now with Nabers and our much improved receiving corps. Instead, he is cooking up "remedial offense with training wheels 2.0" for Janiel Dones. Yay.

Do you make up scenarios in your head and then truly believe them?
Seriously, there's a name for that disorder..
Especially the NY Giants.
There was/is nothing stopping a health-sih Jones from starting this season.
If Jones plays mediocre football he will remain our qb. Mara will always have an excuse to start him.
If you want him gone. You have to root that he plays terrible football. Which of course would mean another terrible season.

While it seems different now, Pickett was in the equation to start and was traded based on his reaction to the Wilson trade as reported by Breer
“[Pickett] communicated to the team he was fine with competing for the job, then went the other way when Wilson was added,” Breer wrote Friday. “So he’s gone.”
Competing for job matches the “assurances” from Athletic report

Their situation isn’t much different than ours.
