Big Blue Banter - Undrafted GEMS?

Klaatu : 5/5/2024 12:33 pm
What Johnson and Kubas offer the Giants.

Quote:
The #NewYorkGiants failed to select an offensive linemen in the #2024NFLDraft. They did, however, bring in two undrafted rookies at the position. Nick Falato of #BigBlueBanter goes through the tape of Missouri's Marcellus Johnson and NDSU's Jake Kubas to showcase their talents and what they can offer the #Giants.

Both OLs, and Alex Johnson, were given decent guaranteed money.
If anything

Last year's PS guys had better move up, or move out.

Players have the versatility too. Makes the jobs of Nelson, McKethan and perhaps Ezeudu's jobs a little unsafe.

Summary of Falato was they have interesting athletic traits. Kubas also looks pretty gritty/instinctive. But both need to get bigger and stronger. Probably PS.
hope to get lucky but i think with transfer portal odds of UDFA gems

are a lot lower than they used to be. all of these small school guys are known and recruited to bigger schools if they are good long before getting to draft.

at best 1 or 2 will make the roster and maybe 1 of them will be something, and predicting who that is is almost impossible. ive tried to follow the $ the last few years but some of the guys they gave bigger bonuses to did nothing (i think last year their biggest bonus was a LB who i dont recall being mentioned once in camp).

tommy devito is probably about as much of a gem as you can ever hope to get. that is probably like a 99% percentile outcome.
The 2007 Giants OL

Was a 2nd round pick, a 3rd round, a 5th round pick and two UDFAs (although the Giants signed one of them after he had played 4 NFL seasons).
Nothing would make me feel

Like our scouting department is improving faster than hitting on a UDFA offensive lineman.

Besides just the undrafted there is Aaron Stinnie who had 11 starts at guard for the Bucs last year and Austin Schlottmann who has started at both guard and center over the last 5 years ($.5M gtd). I agree neither Ezeudu (if he's even healthy for preseason) or McKethan who was behind the recently cut Glowinski are safe.

Marcellus Johnson really interests me though, there is no tackle depth. Tony Pauline on Johnson:

Marcellus Johnson of Missouri struggled with an ankle injury in 2023 after transferring from Eastern Michigan, but scouts have gone back and watched the EMU film and realize he’s a legitimate NFL player. Johnson lined up at left tackle for two years at Eastern Michigan, and I graded him almost as high as his former teammate, Sidy Sow.

Sow was a 4th rounder that PFF had on their all-rookie team. Name to listen for when camp starts. I think he has the best shot of the UDFAs to force his way onto the roster.
They both need to improve their strength

They have athletic ability. they need to hit the weight room hard. If they have the drive they can really improve their strength in a short period of time. You can add a lot of strength in 6 months.
