After a very tough start, he's started hitting well: .304/.429/.522 over the past two weeks.
He needs to receive better. He really is below average catching/blocking the ball. I'm not that caught up in throwing out base stealers as often it's off the pitcher. However he has to be better at receiving. Posada was like that but he hit a ton. If Wells hits like that we can live with the defense.

I think Wells has been every bit as good as Trevino and better on pitch selection.

Me too. His tough start was a mirage -- he hit the snot out of many balls but his BABIP was absurdly low. He has the team's highest barrel % after Soto, Judge and Stanton.
He is a lot better player than I thought. Really good OF with a very strong arm. Same PIA player at the plate he was with Boston.
Looks like he is in very good shape too. I do not remember him being that solid looking. Always thought of him as a bit of a doughboy.
is that someone in the OF "Group of 5" (Judge, Soto, Verdugo, Jasson, Spencer) needs to learn how to play first base, even if Stanton is out of the picture.
RE: The consequence of Verdugo looking like a keeper
is that someone in the OF "Group of 5" (Judge, Soto, Verdugo, Jasson, Spencer) needs to learn how to play first base, even if Stanton is out of the picture.
Yup, he’s killed us for years, nice to hang 7 on him.
I’ve been mostly hooked on the Rangers and Knicks the past couple weeks so haven’t watched much aside from highlights, but looks like Judge is getting it going more consistently lately
Agree with you guys above that Verdugo was a really solid add to this roster. We’ve had some pretty crappy LF defense since Gardner hung em up, but Verdugo’s made several quality plays. And he’s hitting too
What was worse was having to listen to Costa kiss his ass with story after story about his greatness. How about you focus on the game you're broadcasting. Listening to Costa you would think Verlander had a perfect game going with 10 K's instead of being down 6-1. Meanwhile Gil was throwing a one-hitter.
Costa has really gone down hill. Calling Pena Volpe, calling a strikeout when the Houston batter hit a foul ball toward the dugout, among other gaffs. He's so engrossed in crafting a tale he forgets he's broadcasting a live game. Do the play by play first.
in here is a little over the top. Dominguez and DJ coming back will really help the position player depth because right now its non-existant. this team is really set up well to be in it all year. The hope is we'll get our ace back in June, Dominguez about 4 or 5 weeks away and we can make trades to address any needs in the rotation or get a big arm for the pen, maybe add a bat and move Gleyber.
but one way or another, this really has to be Stanton's last year.
4-1 now.
Keep him in that 750-800 OPS range and healthy by season's end and I think you could trade him while not incurring a bad please take him tax. I believe the Marlins kick in some loot now and maybe the Yanks could kick in a little more to the next team.
Even if you told me Stanton would hit 800 OPS every year until he retires the Yanks need to clear that spot for their younger or better OFs.
Yep…just like clockwork: I make the Stanton comment, and he proceeds to bash the hardest-hit HR of the season. With Spencer Jones & Jasson knocking on the door, I just don’t think there’s room for a one-dimensional guy like Stanton. For every monster HR he hits, how many 0-for-4 games with 3 strikeouts are there? That little-league play last week where he got forced at 2B on a “single” to RF was really bad, but unfortunately the guy is a liability on the basepaths and in the field. I don’t hate Stanton, but I think his time is up.
Peraza may be rehabbing, but where is he playing? Down in AAA until he’s Andujar’ed?
Interested to see where Dominguez will play, Stanton probably bought himself another 3 months with that frozen rope of a HR.
Peraza is in Tampa and played his first game yesterday. Andujar'ed? Give me a break. If Andujar'ed was a thing, he wouldn't be hanging onto a big league career by his fingernails. He just isn't particularly good, regardless of his fluky rookie year.
Cabrera hasn't hit for shit in a month. He had a hot couple of weeks to start the season but is sporting .217/.241/.337 in his last 24 games. Berti was 2-4 with a ribbie and a run, by the way.

I have been on this idea for a while now.
If Stanton can produce above average power and at least carry a reasonable BA, he has trade value. Remember that after this season (he really can't be moved in season- no one can take on that kind of payroll at the trade deadline- he would be owed somewhere around $10-11M at the deadline), he only has 3 seasons left on that deal, plus a $10M buyout.
In other words, he's owed $32, $29 and $25M over those 3 seasons, plus a $10M buyout. The Marlins start paying the Yanks the $30M in July 2026 and ending October 2028.
If the Yanks kick in the Marlins money in a deal, that means the gaining team is only on the hook for $56M plus the $10M buyout over 3 years. If the Yanks ate the $10M buyout, that's 3 years at just under $19M per. That's acceptable for a slugger in this day and age.
The real issue is the no-trade clause. When the Yanks got him, word was he really wanted to go to the Dodgers (hometown team and fan growing up). Dodgers have bene using Heyward because of his defense and Ohtani has DH sewn up for a decade. Might be hard to send there.
Would he go to the Angels? They need at some bats to protect Trout. Its still LA- just not the Dodgers.
I doubt that he goes anywhere that's not Cali. I don't think he would go to SF, but who knows. San Diego might work, but they have money issues.
In short, Stanton has 7 HR and 19 RBI in the first week of May. Extrapolate that out over a full season and that's roughly 35 HR and 100 RBI. Most teams would pay $19M per for that. The question is who would he agree to be traded to with his full no-trade clause?

Do you ever do anything but gripe?
On the subject of rehabbing guys, the Yanks had a bunch of guys suddenly show up yesterday at various levels of the minors.
You already noted Peraza's big offensive game in low-A Tampa yesterday (though he was a DH- yet to play the field).
However, don't forget that Nick Burdi, who made the team with an impressive ST performance and played well until injured, pitched an impressive inning in AAA last night- one inning, 3 Ks.
On the minor league side, Tyler Hardman, who has a lot of power and not much else and played in AA last year, began a rehab assignment in low A Tampa last night.

i don't think it's hate Stu, he's a liability. So he mashes a mistake here and there, does nothing else in between. Can't run, can't field so he's wasting a roster spot for the occasional dinger surrounded by strikeouts. Do what Cohen did with Sherzer and Verlander and eat the money.

Dominguez is going to play at AAA this year. Judge, Verdugo and Soto is a VG OF. Grisham is a VG CF and Cabrera can play corner OF, too. No need to bring Jasson up this year unless they trade Grisham. i doubt they want Dominguez sitting on the bench instead of getting ABs at SWB...

Agree! Dominguez will need reps more than anything. No need to rush him.
Last 12 games:
.302/.423/.628
4 HR
9 RBI
197 wRC+
He has historically struggled against Verlander though, we'll see
Had the exact same reaction, I've been anxious to see Wells' name in the lineup a little more often.

I think I saw Trevino's numbers were very good too last couple weeks. They need Torres to wake up. He has to be pressing because of his walk year.
The sooner they sit Stanton, the better it will be. He does just enough to make you think he is waking up, but then 3 Ks....

Won't be Dominguez - too short.
4-1 now.
4-1 now.
And then hits a line drive 421 ft...7-1 Thought it was a single...nope.
Volpe hit a 2 runner before.
Eff the 'stros...
Yeah his now 93 mph heater isn't going to quite cut it.
