Traina: Joe Judge named one of worst ever NFL hires by PFN

FranknWeezer : 6/19/2024 11:22 pm
The “clown show” comment gets me thinking about BBI!

Quote:
But as the wheels continued to fall off the Giants’ bandwagon, Judge seemed to become more defensive of the job he was doing, as evidenced by his now famous 11-minute rank in which he tried to convince people that he wasn’t running “a clown show.”

PFN says Judge is one of top 10 worst NFL hires ever - ( New Window )
"Look at John Harbaigh!"
widmerseyebrow : 6/20/2024 4:35 am : link
Trying to rationalize the jump from ST coordinator to head coach of the Giants was the first warning sign.
Joe Judge was bad
TrueBlue56 : 6/20/2024 6:08 am : link
But, I think mcadoo was worse. From the oversized suit, changing his persona with the slicked back hair to completely losing control of the team. Landon Collins and Eli Apple going at each other in the media. The inmates were running the asylum under his watch
Joe Judge was far from the worst ever.
FStubbs : 6/20/2024 6:14 am : link
Though he was trending down *sharply* toward the end.

Handley was awful.

What about guys like Singletary, Jim Zorn, and Rod Rust?
There were coaches who were much worse...
DefenseWins : 6/20/2024 6:32 am : link
than Judge...

Judge is not even the worst Giants coach... Ray Handley
Maybe not the worst ever on the Giants, but he was pretty bad - and
Ira : 6/20/2024 7:12 am : link
he sure had a lot of people fooled in his 1st season.
Rooted
Toth029 : 6/20/2024 7:53 am : link
For Judge but season 2 he got too overwhelmed and everything fell apart.

The team didn't turn on itself like it did under McAdoo, though. Jonathan Casillas talks about how Landon Collins and other defensive players would get irritated and have verbal fights with Eli Apple constantly and the HC not once did a damn thing.

Then there's defending Ereck Flowers and letting him wall around freely. Who needs Andrew Whitworth anyway, right Marc Ross and Jerry Reese?
If we’re talking worst NFL coaching hires
mfsd : 6/20/2024 7:54 am : link
how aren’t Bobby Petrino and Steve Spurrier on the list?

Judge was a dud, but he was fucking Lombardi compared to the NFL stints of those guys

This is entirely subjective, but McAdoo at least took us to a playoff game and a 13-15 record. Not great, but better than Judge’s 10-24 record and no playoffs.
I had really high hopes for Judge.
Vin_Cuccs : 6/20/2024 8:16 am : link
He said all the right things...but that was the problem. What he said and what he did didn't align.
I don't see how this is fair at all
Sean : 6/20/2024 8:29 am : link
This is an example of the media running with the QB sneak reaction. Judge was no worse than Shurmur.

Shurmur with NYG: 9-23
Judge with NYG: 10-23

Judge also inherited a much tougher situation.
The article doesn’t say that Judge was THE
Section331 : 6/20/2024 8:33 am : link
worst hire, just one of the worst hires. It’s hard to argue with that, but yeah, Handley should be ahead of him in that line. And while I was no fan of McAdoo, he did make the playoffs.
Not an unfair assessment
HBart : 6/20/2024 8:36 am : link
One of Worst Hires in NFL History.

As long as Handley et al are also.

Can't rank their position in the crappiest ever coach race - different situations.

Does it matter anyway?
His results on the field weren't much worse than others

I bought into him, but come December '21...he was making a fool out of himself in his pressers.
And we almost got
Scooter185 : 6/20/2024 9:37 am : link
A third year of him!
I think we are running into the Leona Helmsley syndrome here
Marty in Albany : 6/20/2024 10:03 am : link
by confusing who is bad at coaching with who is bad at being a human being. Leona Helmsley "the Queen of Mean" ran a tight ship, but was a total bitch.

Everyone loved Alex Webster, but his record was worse than Ray H...'s (I can't say his name).

I'll go with Parcells' well known principle of, "You are what your record says you are."
I can't believe I am
mfjmfj : 6/20/2024 12:28 pm : link
going to defend Judge, but I think he was a decent head coach who spiraled out of control at the end, and was stuck with epically bad management. I doubt he gets another shot, but if he does, would not surprise me if he had a modicum of success. Not saying he rose to the level of average, but not as bad as some are saying.

This. My first reaction is that he sounded like every High School coach I ever heard.
Arnsparger was our worst coach in the Super Bowl Era
The Mike : 6/20/2024 12:51 pm : link
But Joe Judge was a close second. Shurmur was indeed a disaster, but not as bad as Judge's epic fall from grace. Thank God for Eric and his daughter! Handley was terrible given his talent and in the context of the great Parcells decade, but frankly he is probably now in hindsight a class above the McAdoo-Shurmur-Judge disastrous triumvirate.

W-L Pct (min 25 games)
1. Parcells 77-49 .610
2. Coughlin 102-90 .531
3. Fassel 58-53 .522
4. Reeves 31-33 .484
5. McAdoo 13-15 .464
6. Daboll 15-18 .456
7. Handley 14-18 .438
8. Webster 29-40 .421
9. Perkins 23-34 .404
10. McVay 14-23 .378
11. Judge 10-23 .303
12. Shurmur 9-23 .281
13. Arnsparger 7-28 .200

I agree. He will go down for his win loss record and the spiral at the end. But different time different place I think he would have had success as a head coach. Probably should have gone to college before the pros. Also he had the worst GM in history and that does affect the coach.

I think the Giants brass saw themselves as getting pre-Boston College Tom Coughlin and wanted to get in before he had success in college and did well with a different franchise. In the end, he was all talk. I am glad we parted ways when we did.
Look at that roster
bc4life : 6/20/2024 1:06 pm : link
and those injuries. Had nothing to work with.
After firing Garrett when he had no one else to blame…
sb from NYT Forum : 6/20/2024 2:29 pm : link
…He was in full blown denial, disinformation, non-reality mode. I was done with before that bizarre rant. 9 pts. against Miami, and he was talking about how good the offense looked, I was done with him after that.
I have to admit
Dr. D : 6/20/2024 2:33 pm : link
he really had me snowed going into yr 2. I know I'm not the only one.

In fairness to those of us in that group, Judge went 5-3 the 2nd half of '20, including wins against each div rival. Beating the skins is no biggie, but they beat the eagles AND cowpies (plus Bengals and Seahawks)!

They seemed to have finished strong after starting the pandemic affected season 0-5.

The future was looking bright!

Then in yr 2 the clown show came to town
The veteran FA's leaving camp after a few days was a bright red
PatersonPlank : 6/20/2024 2:39 pm : link
signal. Also of course the QB sneak on his own 3. He really had no clue, and the players knew it too.
The worst thing about Judge
Sam Huff : 6/20/2024 4:57 pm : link
was that he would NEVER go for it on fourth down. Never. The Giants would have a 4th & 2 on the opponent's 39-yard line and he would punt the ball.

I remember once we had a 4th and short in the opponent's territory and he kept the offense out there. I thought, finally! But no, with 15 seconds left on the clock, the punt team came running out on the field and ran a Chinese fire drill to get the punt off. It was even worse that just lining up to punt the ball to start with.

His coaching style was to deliberately drain the confidence out of the offense. It worked.

Gettleman was horrible but wasn't the worst in history. Not when Matt Millen exists.
He basically
RetroJint : 6/20/2024 11:10 pm : link
was robotic in everything he did . He couldn’t handle adversity well . And he coached scared . The power QB sneak formations to run down the clock at the end of the first half against the Bears was the most unmanly display of game management in Giants history . Soon came “Postcards from the Edge” regarding Rivera and Washington .

He wasn’t ready . It looks like he will never be ready . But for awhile there I stayed with him.
The moment JJ was seen
thrunthrublue : 6/20/2024 11:17 pm : link
diving into the mud and getting hosed down in camp.....We had to know that this cannot go well. When a head coach's best play call is a kneel down, on third down......its over. At that moment all i could hear was Robert De Nero's manic laughter in that movie theater scene in Cape Fear. Sadly, it became painfully evident that Mara, Tisch, et all had been hustled, grifted and embarrassed by the massive snow job they bit on with their underachieving wonder boy Joe Judge. Just another rotten branch from the Belichick coaching tree.
I was curious about how Judge and the Giants finished
Dr. D : 6/21/2024 12:53 pm : link
5-3 the 2nd half of his first yr (giving silly people like me hope for the future), with wins against the eagles, cowpies, WFT, bengals and seahawks. I couldn't remember so I looked it up.

Most years beating those 5 teams during any stretch would be great, but guess what? All those teams sucked in '20! except the Seahawks (12-4). eagles were 4-11-1, cowpies 6-10, bengals 4-11-1. WFT won the div at 7-9 (which is why we were still in contention near the end).

In retrospect, I guess I didn't have that much reason to be so optimistic going into yr 2, which we all know turned out to be a disaster! Glad we punted his clown ass out of here!

This. Handley. Anyone who says Judge was worse is a moron. Doesn't mean he wasn't horrific. But this is the very definition of recency bias.
One of the worst ever
Jersey Heel : 6/22/2024 7:27 am : link
Not THE worst ever. That’s the premise of the article. No one is calling him the worst coach ever.

Sure, there is a recency bias involved because of his meltdown and subsequent role in destroying the Patriot’s offense, but that’s to be expected in an article like this.
