But as the wheels continued to fall off the Giants’ bandwagon, Judge seemed to become more defensive of the job he was doing, as evidenced by his now famous 11-minute rank in which he tried to convince people that he wasn’t running “a clown show.” |
Handley was awful.
What about guys like Singletary, Jim Zorn, and Rod Rust?
Judge is not even the worst Giants coach... Ray Handley
The team didn't turn on itself like it did under McAdoo, though. Jonathan Casillas talks about how Landon Collins and other defensive players would get irritated and have verbal fights with Eli Apple constantly and the HC not once did a damn thing.
Then there's defending Ereck Flowers and letting him wall around freely. Who needs Andrew Whitworth anyway, right Marc Ross and Jerry Reese?
Judge was a dud, but he was fucking Lombardi compared to the NFL stints of those guys
This is entirely subjective, but McAdoo at least took us to a playoff game and a 13-15 record. Not great, but better than Judge’s 10-24 record and no playoffs.
Shurmur with NYG: 9-23
Judge with NYG: 10-23
Judge also inherited a much tougher situation.
As long as Handley et al are also.
Can't rank their position in the crappiest ever coach race - different situations.
Does it matter anyway?
Everyone loved Alex Webster, but his record was worse than Ray H...'s (I can't say his name).
I'll go with Parcells' well known principle of, "You are what your record says you are."
This. My first reaction is that he sounded like every High School coach I ever heard.
W-L Pct (min 25 games)
1. Parcells 77-49 .610
2. Coughlin 102-90 .531
3. Fassel 58-53 .522
4. Reeves 31-33 .484
5. McAdoo 13-15 .464
6. Daboll 15-18 .456
7. Handley 14-18 .438
8. Webster 29-40 .421
9. Perkins 23-34 .404
10. McVay 14-23 .378
11. Judge 10-23 .303
12. Shurmur 9-23 .281
13. Arnsparger 7-28 .200
I agree. He will go down for his win loss record and the spiral at the end. But different time different place I think he would have had success as a head coach. Probably should have gone to college before the pros. Also he had the worst GM in history and that does affect the coach.

going to defend Judge, but I think he was a decent head coach who spiraled out of control at the end, and was stuck with epically bad management. I doubt he gets another shot, but if he does, would not surprise me if he had a modicum of success. Not saying he rose to the level of average, but not as bad as some are saying.

I think the Giants brass saw themselves as getting pre-Boston College Tom Coughlin and wanted to get in before he had success in college and did well with a different franchise. In the end, he was all talk. I am glad we parted ways when we did.
In fairness to those of us in that group, Judge went 5-3 the 2nd half of '20, including wins against each div rival. Beating the skins is no biggie, but they beat the eagles AND cowpies (plus Bengals and Seahawks)!
They seemed to have finished strong after starting the pandemic affected season 0-5.
The future was looking bright!
Then in yr 2 the clown show came to town
I remember once we had a 4th and short in the opponent's territory and he kept the offense out there. I thought, finally! But no, with 15 seconds left on the clock, the punt team came running out on the field and ran a Chinese fire drill to get the punt off. It was even worse that just lining up to punt the ball to start with.
His coaching style was to deliberately drain the confidence out of the offense. It worked.

Gettleman was horrible but wasn't the worst in history. Not when Matt Millen exists.
He wasn’t ready . It looks like he will never be ready . But for awhile there I stayed with him.
Most years beating those 5 teams during any stretch would be great, but guess what? All those teams sucked in '20! except the Seahawks (12-4). eagles were 4-11-1, cowpies 6-10, bengals 4-11-1. WFT won the div at 7-9 (which is why we were still in contention near the end).
In retrospect, I guess I didn't have that much reason to be so optimistic going into yr 2, which we all know turned out to be a disaster! Glad we punted his clown ass out of here!

This. Handley. Anyone who says Judge was worse is a moron. Doesn't mean he wasn't horrific. But this is the very definition of recency bias.
Sure, there is a recency bias involved because of his meltdown and subsequent role in destroying the Patriot’s offense, but that’s to be expected in an article like this.
