but how do we as fans have any idea how good our individual personnel guys are? Its an honest question - I have no idea how I'd evaluate this guy or Marc Ross.
...any reason why you have a preference? I asked someone in the other thread. I'm just curious on why you prefer one or the other. Anyway, hopefully the Giants created a culture where there will be a seamless transition to the next guy.
Did a great job here for years in pro personnel. Gonna be missed. I wish him well even though he went an NFC rival (an opponent that we'll be seeing on the road next year too).
With "The Rug" consulting down in Carolina for Richardson, all that any team had to do to keep their execs from being noticed was to dress them up as Offensive Lineman. The Rug wouldn't have even bothered to notice them.
Has paid his dues and likely wanted the opportunity as I dont think he is all that young and you never know about a future opportunity. He is a very good hire for them.
.....Next man up is Sternfeld and he was promoted already last year

Gettleman's position was new and I would doubt that he will be replaced in that role.
"....Gettleman's position was new and I would doubt that he will be replaced in that role...."
If it was new and it's doubtful it will be re-filled, how important is his loss again?
This was his first season as "Senior Pro Personnel Analyst." His previous 13 seasons here he was "just" the "Pro Personnel Analyst." He's quite accomplished. Giants.com - ( New Window )
People are really talking out of their asses on this thread
Its a matter of simply reading his bio and seeing what he's done. Dave Gettleman is a pretty accomplished exec. Ross is younger and doesn't have quite the resume. but he does seem to have an eye for college talent. He's more seen as a riser and a future GM prospect.
does leave, I'd like to see Reese have a duel role like he did in 2007, prior to Ross getting the position. That was our best draft, and that meant Reese had to do the GM role, as well as his old job. So I want to see what Reese can do again with both jobs.
guys like Locklear, Boothe, Hixon, Brown, the FB from the Rams (senior moment here), and all our UFA signings come through the Pro Personnel Dept. Gettleman has been a gem for us.
But his department is responsible for scouting all of the pro players and available players who are beyond their draft year as each season and offseason goes on. Certainly, when a player comes in for a workout I'd presume that Reese and the coaches also watch those. But the Pro Personnel Dept. is charged with that type of scouting, so they're the "lead dog" so to speak.
What point are you trying to make? No one works in a vacuum. And I doubt anyone here is trying to take credit away from Reese, Ross, or anyone else. Gettleman was an integral part of that group. His track record speaks for itself. Minimizing his loss is just head-scratching.
Reese makes decisions based on the scouting and observation
Made by pro personnel. It's not Reese's job to be constantly aware of all potentially available free agents. it's Pro Personnel's job to have that library of info and recommendations available to the GM.
Apologies to you and others on this thread. I don't usually follow the machinations of the administration aside from Ross, Reese and Abrams..I didn't realize the input he had..I was wrong..
Question then is, can his loss be mitigated by all involved including the new guy?
in that NYG will not suffer in their ability to source product..ie good UDFA, RFA, etc....change can be good if the core is in place....count me as not overly worried....
but it's always a pain to lose good people to advancement in the same way it's a pain to lose skilled employees to other companies. I don't think most people know who the new guy is yet. I don't.
they are tuned into the inside operations of the team and 99% of them are talking straight out of their ass. Unless you can pinpoint specifically what has made Gettleman a more substantial loss than Ross would be, please don't chime in with an opinion on it. You just sound ignorant.
Is more difficult to replace that Ross. How do you replace the experience of 25 years in the NFL, working in the front offices of 13 playoff teams and 5 or 6 super bowl teams? it's not taking anything away from Ross to say such a thing, nor is it just talking out of one's ass.
I think losing anyone out of a successful front office
is never a good thing, but I am absolutely certain that the Giants have capable lieutenants ready and able to step up to fill Gettleman's shoes. As for losing Ross versus Gettleman, I do believe that Dave (at age 61) is getting his only shot while the much younger Ross, if the fact that he had four teams interested in interviewing him this offseason, will have ample opportunity for future employment.
The issue is not losing him.....but the people he will lure away
but I understand most teams structures based on past football experience.. So then it would seem Gettleman held (at least in name) the position that Ken Sternfeld currently holds before Gettlman was named Pro Personnel Director before the 2011 season.. it will be interesting to see if someone else is promoted or someone else is brought in.. whether it be for experience or if someone is promoted then another guy to aid and learn..
I do think Ross has a lot of input on our team however, and he is also valuable..
be rejoicing the loss of the individual responsible for ..
Boley
Bernard
Canty
Rolle
Also, an not taking anything away from the guy but if he was so great then how did we still end up with guys like Carlos Emmons , Barret Green, LaVar Aarington ect...
and whomever he picks as his assistant can provide us with the same quality as before. But that remains to be seen.
I always admired Parcells' philosophy of hiring assistants whom he felt were capable of ascending to a coordinator position over time. I wish that TC did more of that, especially on defense.
I think that Reese, and EA before him, have done a nice job in that respect....with lots of continuity and advancement through the ranks.
Sternfeld was promoted into Gettleman's old spot this season. It's gonna be tough to overcome, but the Giants are a smart organization and must have been preparing themselves for this eventuality.
The Giants promoted Gettleman's assistant, Ken Sternfeld, last year to Director of Pro Personnel. They were grooming him to replace the 61-year old Gettleman.
that move pushing Gettleman up a notch seemed to be a way to groom a successor. This seems like a short sighted move by the Panthers......he is in his early 60's.
and 61 isn't so old that it's going to hurt his ability to do his job. Experience has to be worth something too.
Gettleman has been a GM candidate before, the latest when he was considered in Cleveland (not surprisingly, a search lead by EA at the time). He's been the subject of articles on some of our FA gems (like Hedgecock). He's also helped BBI at a couple of points in time (seem to recall him arranging a tour for some BBIers some time back).
No reason a Giants fan should have no idea who he is, unless they're not paying attention.
That's a likely issue here. Gettleman has worked so long in the Giants org., he's probably not going to drift away from people he is not familiar with and is likely to poach at least one top guy for one of the top scouting/personnel roles.
I am glad for Gettleman. Hopefully he goes out and helps them get a Super Bowl at some point in the next four or five years.
I look at this as an opportunity for some guys in the Giants org. to get promoted and prove their mettle even more. Gives a chance for new voices and ideas/opinions to be heard as well, and maybe get some young guy a shot in a lower level role as you move people up.
talk to the Giants to ask permission. He can't take scouts from the Giants under contract, executives as well. As I recall he can't even create positions for them. I remember the Chiefs having this issue when they look to change their entire front office a couple of years ago.
thru a good friend (he was coached by Dave in highschool) and may I say, what a nice guy he was. He gave my son Gavin and I field passes to practice and then brought us into the locker room after. My friend told him about my sons history and this busy man actually said, and you must be Gavin! Could not believe he remembered his name! That totally impressed me. Something I will never forget and I hope Gavin keeps that memory forever as well. So, good luck to you in your new position with the Panthers Mr. Gettleman. YOU are a class act from a class organization....thanks for the memories!
because of his "long and decorated career". The announcement coming from them was a very good one talking about Gettleman's 15 year run where he has been with 5SB winners.
I haven't talked to anyone directly, but the finalists were Gettleman, Ross and some guy from the CFL who has madet he playoffs 19 years in a row (Popp, maybe?). They chose Gettleman for his experience and ability to work with more than just one NFL team at a high level. I think he edged Ross out on the experience criteria.
nah. I'm not a compilation fan. Part of the hilarity of the game threads is adding the commentary to the idiocy. It is sort of like "The Soup" for blithering idiots.
But most of the commentary is specific to events fresh in our minds. There's enough lunacy here that just doing game threads work.
I'm sort of pissed I didn't read the threads for the Falcons, Ravens or Eagles games because I was on the road and not on BBI for that stretch.
didn't liza minelli used to beat the bag out of Gettleman?
interview anywhere (for a GM position this year or previously) besides Carolina?
I've always heard he's done a good job, but would probably be a little skeptical that I hired a consultant (Ernie Accorsi) to help manage the GM search, and lo and behold he hires one of his old direct reports from a former team.
Not suggesting he is or isn't qualified, just the process and outcome would be suspicious to me.
I ask because I'd heard Ross's name mentioned a lot, nationally as a candidate for many jobs, never Gettleman's.
All the best to him
Few people in the front office can claim to have Gettleman's resume. The guy was involved in 4-5 super bowl winners. very accomplished.
see how others view our FA's .

Good for him. I'm sure we'll somehow survive.

Gettleman was the pro guy. Ross is the college guy.
If Ross had left, he took with him the Giants' scouts early thoughts on the college players.
