Article on Giants Uniforms and New Facilities

DigitaLx2001 : 7/17/2009 1:30 pm
Really neat article with pictures and such of the new facilities, as well as a discussion about uniforms, from a tour with equipment manager Joe Skiba.

Noteworthy (maybe already common knowledge to some of you?):

- When we are away and wearing blue (like vs Dallas) we will wear the away pants with it
- No red uni's this year; no alternate jersey in 2009 or '10
- In 2011 we will have some crazy throwback jersey yet to be revealed

I hope "crazy throwback"

Has GIANTS on the helmet. That's all I ask.
I like the ny logo on the helmets
robbieballs2003 : 7/17/2009 1:32 pm : link
I want to see the early 90s uniforms though. That would be sick.
Yes, please.
GiantFilthy : 7/17/2009 1:33 pm : link
this would be cool

or even white on white.

have got to be the 80s uni and helmet, me thinks it would sell the most amongst fans. Although I like the 70s gear, personally.

great shot. I would kill to see the old GIANTS helmet with the whites.
86 road whites are my fav

On the current uniform,

I'd like to see everything gray changed to white. Would really improve an already good look.

is that training facility
RodneyHamp : 7/17/2009 1:45 pm : link
heaven?
I like the 86 look as well
whispa : 7/17/2009 1:48 pm : link
All white jerseys for away and the darker blue for helmet and jersey.

Love the new facility!

Danny Kanell : 7/17/2009 1:50 pm : link
I agree on making the pants white, home and away.
The road uniform would particularly benefit from
Go Terps : 7/17/2009 1:54 pm : link
a total change to white.
If it's...
Eric from BBI : Admin : 7/17/2009 1:55 pm : link
a crazy throwback uniform, it won't be the 1980's version.
Yep
Danny Kanell : 7/17/2009 1:57 pm : link
I never thought the gray made any sense, there's none on the jerseys or the helmets. Can any skilled photoshoppers out there do something to a pic to see what it would look like? Is that even possible?
I gotta go with

Gray Pants > White Pants

Eric,
GiantFilthy : 7/17/2009 1:59 pm : link
well honestly the Giants have never had any "crazy" looking uniforms. About the craziest thing they've had in the uniform history would be the horizontal striped socks in the 70's.

Oh snap, bring back the socks!

Gotta look for a picture now.
the 70s uni is the only one I can think of
JonC : 7/17/2009 2:00 pm : link
that could be described as "crazy".
some of those pics from the training facility rock

I can see it being that fucked up 70's uni w/ the blue pants

Unless we are talking about 30's throwbacks,

which would be about as awesome as you could get.

This isn't crazy to you?

lol
Danny Kanell : 7/17/2009 2:07 pm : link
Those look like Montreal Canadiens uniforms.
Filthy
Danny Kanell : 7/17/2009 2:07 pm : link
That's pretty impressive. Thanks.
It's STILL too gray.

We should definitely use
Randy in CT : 7/17/2009 2:10 pm : link
the red and blue leather helmets.
The article doesn't say
SwirlingEddie : 7/17/2009 2:11 pm : link
a "crazy throwback", it says "a doozy of a throwback".
...
Danny Kanell : 7/17/2009 2:12 pm : link
Thank God Eddie clarified that. I now have the exact same thought process I did before he clarified it.

I vote for the Gray pants. They look workmanlike.
plus...
Eric from BBI : Admin : 7/17/2009 2:13 pm : link
if you've noticed, all of the throwbacks on other teams in recent years seem to be the bad ones from the 40's, 50's, or 60's.
that article...

has the best shot of the ring of honor that I've seen...

that locker room is amazing

I don't know how anyone ever leaves! I would be in awe the whole time.
It looks...
Eric from BBI : Admin : 7/17/2009 2:21 pm : link
like the names are backlit. I wonder why some are in red and others yellow? Aesthetics?

RodneyHamp : 7/17/2009 2:24 pm : link
I think it might just be a reflection from the flash, the different angle that the flash hits the letters changes the color of it.
Eric,
GiantFilthy : 7/17/2009 2:24 pm : link
it looks like nearly all are in red except for a couple. Can't think of why that would be.

Stadium tours
Dave in Richmond : 7/17/2009 2:27 pm : link
Do you think they'll ever run them in the new stadium? One of the best afternoons I ever spent was on a tour of the old Yankee Stadium. You paid $20 to go through Monument Park, walk on the warning track around the field to the Yankee dugout, and got to go inside the clubhouse. Amazing.
I want that trashcan.

Eric
mort christenson : 7/17/2009 2:28 pm : link
could be but just from the names I can read there, the distinction between Conerly and Anderson on the one hand and Carson, Gifford and Brown on the other is that the latter 3 were drafted and played their whole career with the Giants. Conerly played his whole NFL career here but he was drafted by the Redskins.
Dave,
GiantFilthy : 7/17/2009 2:28 pm : link
did the same at Turner Field on my honeymoon. We had a blast and even ran into John Smoltz when we got lost from our tour group and ended up where we shouldn't be.
That giant trophy picture
adam XLII : 7/17/2009 2:51 pm : link
is a uni-watch fuck up because it's nfl equipment (rebook) with a big nike logo on it. That's nuts!

The '86 white uni is stunningly beautiful.
The names on the ring of honor
adam XLII : 7/17/2009 2:53 pm : link
look to be a fluorescent red... so the ones closest to the flash are gonna show up as reflective, aka yellow.
The 1972 uni is a perfect combination
adam XLII : 7/17/2009 2:55 pm : link
of the 86 uni and the modern uni
Something bothers me about this that no one has mentioned.
Elisha10 : 7/17/2009 2:55 pm : link
Why would we ware our away pants with the blue jerseys when we are on the road against Dallas or another team. Why do we even need different pants for the home and away uniforms. I hate those skinny little ADIDAS looking stripes on the pants. We had them from 1958-1961 on both white and blue uniforms then switched to the thick stripes in 1962 that we kept on both uniforms until 2005 when for some reason they decided there should be separate pants for home and away uniforms.
Elisha
adam XLII : 7/17/2009 2:56 pm : link
I like the home pants more, but I think it's cool that we're going to have two slightly different looking blue unis for home and away.
This is a little shoddy photoshop
adam XLII : 7/17/2009 2:59 pm : link
As the blue looks purpleish... but I think this idea could be pretty sick..

What about a throwback to the last time we had a new stadium?
MikeinPrescott : 7/17/2009 4:08 pm : link
Those look pretty far out to me by current standards (although I think Eric is right in the '30's unis).

for the red jerseys.
i just bought...
DigitaLx2001 : 7/17/2009 4:19 pm : link
an "authentic" (cough, cough) red Strahan jersey a few weeks ago. Strahan will always be a Giant so that won't get old, and now the reds are retired... so i'll be a classic a few years down the road. i still win.
That big bic of the locker room above got me thinking...
Motley Blue : 7/17/2009 4:20 pm : link

I wonder who puts the NY logo on the trash can? I could do that job. I wonder how much that job pays. If I send a resume to the Giants, do I apply for Locker Room Trash Can Stenciler?

I started out putting the stencil on the locker room trash can. Then I move on to helmets. In another year or two, Tom Coughlin is going to make me an assistant to the Special Teams Coach. That's when the big bucks start rolling in.
Motley, I think you just stumbled onto the fact that
FranknWeezer : 7/17/2009 4:33 pm : link
the Skibas have a job many of us ingrates would kill for.
2011 is also
TheNeumann64 : 7/17/2009 4:50 pm : link
25 years after 1986. That could be a hint as to the Throwback. People also use "crazy" to mean good, awesome, etc. sometimes too.
haha
DigitaLx2001 : 7/17/2009 4:57 pm : link
I used the word "crazy" in my OP and people ran with it. As fas as the article, the actual quote was:
Quote:
The Giants will not be wearing any alternates or throwbacks in 2009 or 2010, but they have a doozy of a throwback slated for 2011 — which I can’t describe.

I would tend to believe its not 1986 just because that would be a somewhat expected throwback and most people are familiar with what they look like... but who knows.
Am I the
TheNeumann64 : 7/17/2009 5:02 pm : link
only one who thinks the throw it back too far when the NFL uses throwbacks? Are there really that many people around right now who remember, and are nostalgic for, jerseys from the 1930's? Why not utilize jerseys people actually remember? I remember when the Eagles wore those yellow and blue jerseys, most of my friends at school in Philly said they much rather would have seen the early 1990's Green (Randall Cunningham-era).
Hmmm
GoBlue83 : 7/17/2009 5:08 pm : link
the fact that the Giants arean't wearing a throwback in 2009 or 2010, but specifically chose 2011 leads me to believe it will be the 1986 throwback, because 2011 will mark the 25th anniversary of the 1986 jersey/Super Bowl.
It seems like there were a lot more uniform changes during
Marty in Albany : 7/17/2009 5:11 pm : link
the bad years than during the good years. (If you can't change the players or the coaches, change the uniforms.)
thinking out loud....
Greg from LI : 7/17/2009 5:18 pm : link
....looking at that big picture of the locker room, it looks like the names in red are Hall of Famers. In the picture, I can read these names - Mel Hein, Frank Gifford, Harry Carson and Roosevelt Brown in red, and Charley Conerly and Ottis Anderson in yellow. Perhaps that's it?
What are the two blue and white globe thingys on white poles
Marty in Albany : 7/17/2009 5:43 pm : link
that flank the entrance to the locker room in the 2:25 PM posted photo?
ive been wondering
ITaLiRiCaN : 7/17/2009 5:46 pm : link
the locker room in the stadium is now only used on game days?
Facility looks great
bois : 7/17/2009 6:17 pm : link
I love the current road uniforms. Best in football, IMO.. best I've ever seen the Giants wear for sure. I prefer the roadies to the home blue now, which was never the case before. Helmets now are excellent too, especially with the white jersey.
I really hope
Brian T : 7/17/2009 8:54 pm : link
That the throwback is more of the 1980-1999 Jersey....

and NOT the 1930's....specifically...1933...which is more or less the Winged Helmet of the Michigan Wolverines.....just blue and red

and the Jersey that looks like the Montreal Canadiens

I hate the alt jerseys so much
Jonny : 7/17/2009 9:53 pm : link
this is very welcome news. Now please kill the white/red away jerseys. Go back to the Fassel or earlier ones, just get rid of the pop warner looking crap they wear now.
Judging from the awful reception the Reds got
Ten Ton Hammer : 7/18/2009 6:34 am : link
They'd never go to an even worse design if they're smart. 80's throwbacks are a goldmine in waiting.
my favorite unis are the '86
Life Long Giants Fan : 7/18/2009 10:59 am : link
I didn't mind the red alt unis and I would fine if we did every throwback uni starting with 1925.
What about the socks
G_V_P 4 MVP : 7/18/2009 11:42 am : link
I would like to see the red socks with the blue top on some of those road game that the blue top is required
Love the current uniforms
xwreckingxcrewx : 7/18/2009 12:42 pm : link
and would like to see the 1934 uni's as the throwback. I didn't mind the all white uniforms, but gray pants are classic.
Leave the current uniforms the way they are.
Dave in Hoboken : 7/18/2009 1:23 pm : link

This new facility is awesome

Loaded with Purel or some such. Seen em before.

LOL ashtrays...that's a throwback. These guys probably cant smoke due to contract issues. I'm sure any self respecting team would put that in there.
