The Polo Grounds & Old Yankee Stadium

truebluelarry : 6/6/2014 9:42 am
I've always been intrigued by the unusually close proximity of the Giants first two home fields - literally walking distance from one another.

I love black & white action photographs from inside these old, cavernous buildings, they contain unmistakable character.

The Giants hosted four NFL Championship Games in the Polo Grounds - 1934, 1938, 1944 & 1946...

Giants-Bears 10/31/37

and three at Yankee Stadium - 1956, 1958 & 1962

Loved walking up the "Hill" with my Dad

toward's the Polo Grounds..Never saw the Football Giants play there as I became a fan in 1956, their first year playing at Yankee Stadium..

I thought the Polo Grounds was awesome with the lay out quite beautiful..Of course just seeing anything in color(we had a black and white TV) was quite remarkable to a little kid
great photos - I never saw the Giants at the Polo Grounds either but

I did see the Giants at Yankee Stadium a few times, and I did go to the Polo Grounds a couple of times ... to see the early Mets, before Shea opened in '64.

was at the Polo Grounds, Nov. 1934. Bears 10.9.

I sat in those bleachers to left of goal post. The kicking, tackling, running, blocking, & passing of those Pros excited me. I had never seen anything like it

I like the early photos with the rail yard on the north side of the Polo Grounds.

FYI - that first aerial photo at the top

is from 1931, I should've noted that originally.
One of the cool features unique to the early era

is that the photographers were generally on the south sideline facing the sunny side of the field. You can often see the train cars on the elevated platform right through the grandstands, which were often sparsely populated.

I lived up the hill on Ogden Ave from Yankee Stadium. I saw the Giants play in the Stadium and the Mets play in the Polo Grounds. I also saw a few old demolition derbys in the Polo Grounds also.
You can also see the El train that only ran between the Polo Grounds and Jerome Avenue. Wow, I am dating myself.

Thank you
What was the name

with my dad (1905-1974). We always parked alongside the Polo Grounds and walked. I also started going to the Polo Grounds when the Mets were formed.
Love those old

play with Buddy Young playing HB.
Also when I got older used to bowl in Stadium Lanes.
Wow,

how deep was center field in the old Polo Grounds?

I think it was 465 for old Yankee Stadium.

That's why Willie talks more about the throw he made

Anyone ever ride

the overhead train from Yankee Stadium
to the Polo Grounds?
It was in-between apartment houses and about 10' away from the firescapes.

I grew up on Summit Ave..the first building by the Bridge on the Yankee Side of the Hudson. Post Polo Grounds...awesome pic!
and this from Wikipedia
awm34 : 6/7/2014 1:07 pm : link
" Brock became one of four players to hit a home run into the center-field bleachers at the old Polo Grounds in New York since its 1923 reconstruction; the home run was one of two that would clear the wall in consecutive days.[2] His blast came against Al Jackson in the first game of a June 17 doubleheader against the New York Mets and would be followed the very next day by Hank Aaron's center-field shot. Joe Adcock was the first to hit a ball over that wall, in 1953. Babe Ruth reached the old bleachers (a comparable distance) before the reconstruction."
The 483 Polo Grounds dead center was to the clubhouse.
Phil in Joisey : 6/7/2014 1:53 pm : link
The clubhouse was set back. The bleachers on either side of the clubhouse were about 40 or 50 feet closer. The historic home runs hit by Adcock, Brock and Aaron did not go over the 483 sign...they went into the bleachers somewhat shorter than 483, but humongous blasts nonetheless.

well, maybe nit but hallowed ground. I dispose thebSteinbrenners now. The grass that Ruth, Gehrig and Dimaggio brought consumate grace too had to be preserved. Consulate greed carried the day else the stadium would have been built on the old site. The Red Sox understand, Fenway, in my judgment at least, makes them the team for the ages.

Yep ... I recall outs near the steps longer than those home runs ...
I never realized how straight the Polo Grounds was laid out
unlike Yankee Stadium with a similar deep center field but
pop up home runs down the RF line ...

My dad was in a group with bleacher seats in Yankee Stadium
which offered really great views ...
I don't recall football Giants games in the Polo Grounds
but did get great seats for the Titans (even with the so called sellouts - 50,000 fans came disguised as empty seats)

Nice memories ...

I believe it was 1938 and I sat along 3rd base side when the Giants/Dodgers Memorial day dblhddr had Carl Hubbell going for his 25th consecutive victory.

Tha Dodgers were blasting him and I think it was 8-3 in the 3rd inning when Mel Ott took Hubbell out of the game.

In those days, the pitcher had to turn and walk the 400 plus ft to the Giants clubhouse. The fans applauded vigorously as he trudged along, a lonely figure.

They didn't stop cheering until after he disappeared into the club house.
Chops, I wasn't too far behind you - - - -
Phil in Joisey : 6/10/2014 1:02 pm : link
My first game at the Polo Grounds was a Giants-Indians pre-season game in 1942. I'm told (no real recollection of this) that the starting pitchers were Carl Hubbell and Bob Feller.
Not a bad way to begin my baseball addiction.
