The Lions are 3-7-1 following up what was a 6-10 season last year. Jim Caldwell got fired off of back to back 9-7 seasons.
I would have preferred Patricia to Shurmur, but interesting how both guys will likely be fired after 2 years.
It’s going to be very difficult to nail this next HC hire. So many of these guys fail. I don’t know what direction the Giants will go in, but it has to be right.
People always bash retreads, but a guy like Jim Caldwell has won both in Indy & Detroit. Ron Rivera has done well in Carolina. There is value in proving you can win in the NFL. Fans always want the next best thing, a lot of times that guy isn’t out there.
The thing with Shurmur - he was a retread who didn’t even win prior.
I wouldn’t advocate for Caldwell, just making the point he’s better than he gets credit for.
He's been every bit as bad as Shurmur it seems - in particular, on D where his team is almost as bad as the Giants.

I could actually live with Rivera and the staff he brings with him. He's been through a lot in Carolina and probably has a superbowl to his resume if Cam isn't a punk.

Oh yeah he was a decent coach, but at the end of the day he wasn't a guy that was bringing hardware in so they moved on. He is miles better than fucking PS though, and it kills me their a murmurs of him coming back. The question is why? It sure as shit isn't a football decision. If he comes back it is all about protecting the Giants way, safety and stability, and not actually about winning football games. I'd seriously consider putting my Giants fandom, down where I keep my Knicks. Passively interested.
But I guess if Wilks can get fired after one year last year in the toughest division in football, with the hardest schedule in football while starting a rookie QB, I guess no one’s safe.

Yup.
I’m convinced he never uses that pencil. I know they are playing a back up QB but he looks just as lost out there.
No to Patricia as HD, maybe for DC -- but I'm not sold on any of BB's guys.
No to McDaniels as anything except maybe QB coach. Don't want him.
No to Bill Cowher
Mike McCarthy is a safe choice. It's the kind of move I expect the Giants to make, routinely. He's Dan Reeves II. Expect similar results.
Matt Rhule seems like a risk worth taking. High-risk, high-reward choice. But not very Giants-like. Matt Rhule with Jason Garrett and Matt Patricia is an interesting start on a staff — if Rhule can handle having two former NFL head coaches working as OC and DC.

Patricia will rejoin Belichick’s staff likely. I don’t see Garrett taking an OC job.
I’d take a shot with McDaniels. I look at Kyle Shanahan as a comp to McDaniels.
I'm about as vocal a Gettleman critic as there is on here, and I'd still take Rivera without any Gettleman-driven criticisms. I don't particularly care for Gettleman, but I'd still rather be wrong about him and have the Giants win - it seems that at least if he's going to stick around, it could only help to have him be 100% aligned with his HC, which presumably he and Rivera would be.
I can understand those that would read it as Gettleman getting even more entrenched, but I'm not under any illusions that Gettleman is actually on the hot seat right now and probably won't be for a couple more years, even if things don't significantly turn around next season.
I'd prefer to have Gettleman gone too, but if he's going to stay, then I'd rather he gets the most favorable hand possible dealt to him.

Rex Ryan for DC
David Cutcliffe for QB coach
Flame away...

I'd take it all but Garrett. Give me Norv. The guy has no HC aspirations. He's a very good OC. What he has done with CMC should be the driving factor in getting our offense to the next level with Barkley.

Rhule is a former Giants assistant so hiring him would be be a VERY Giants move.

McDaniels had a shot as a HC, and it went spectacularly bad. He is a hard pass for me.
Any theories as to why Parcells coaching tree is so much better than Belichick’s?

Plus the Colts fiasco. Can’t imagine anyone other than B.B. will touch him after that.
If the mediocrity of Bill O'Brien is the shining success story of former NE assistants, that isn't exactly enticing.
Sean, who knows? Maybe Parcells delegated to his assistants more while Belichick is the guy running everything? I really don't know.

Holy fuck Norv Turner is still around?
Shit while we're at it might as well get Monte Kiffin to be DC lol jk no I'd totally be on board with Norv coming with Rivera to be OC.
There is no reason why Barkley is not used like CMC. Get right with Barkley and the entire offense improves. I also like the fact that Norv has no HC ambitions. He just does his job well.
I also wouldn't be opposed to bringing Rex Ryan as DC. The guy wants to get back on the sidelines and he won't be getting a HC gig until he reestablishes himself. The guy despite his mouth knows defense. Ron/Norv/Rex will pull this team out of the gutter.
SF played two OT's coming off injury that were not ready to play, at all. They should dominate a rematch, but I agree you can never count RW out, not with the way he is playing this year. I just don't think they have the horses.
You know things are sad in Giantsland when you hear people pine for Ron Rivera, Mike McCarthy, Rex Ryan and Josh McDaniels.
He seems like an untrustworthy guy - during the week we played the Jets - there were some crossover podcasts and I believe he said if he were the coach of the Jets, they's be winning.
I understand why people think McDaniels wouldn't be good but I'd be intrigued. I think he's likely to be the next in line in NE which is saying a lot. But I can see him leaving for full control which is where it gets dicey (if you think he didn't learn from the Tebow selection).
I'd sign up for McDaniels but we'd have to go all in on him and let him have the power (don't see that happening).
...
That was my intention with the proposition for Rex as DC. Yes, it would be short-lived. He would get the defense on track. He would say some dumb shit - that is a given. And then he would leave in a year or 2.
Just looking for someone that knows their defense and Rivera would be able to command Rex's personality.
Give me an up and coming college coach (Matt Rhule). Thank you.
Tom Coughlin
Dan Reeves
I could live with Rivera. He wouldn’t be my first choice, but I wanted Shurmer, so what do I know? His teams are always competitive, and I like that he isn’t afraid to take chances.
Matt Rhule types don't have much of track record as NFL head coaches.
Tom Coughlin
Dan Reeves
Dick Vermeil (won Super Bowl)
John Fox (made Super Bowl)
Forrest Gregg (made Super Bowl)
Marv Levy (made 4 Super Bowls)
I think him and Gettle could work together very well.
The point is a "retread" doesn't always fail and I'd be surprised if they have a worse track record than college guys making the leap (like Lou Holtz)
Rhule Tough - ( New Window )
Tom Coughlin
Dan Reeves
Touche' on Coughlin. Disagree on Reeves. Carroll was fired twice and went back to college before being successful in the NFL.

Fox was bailed out by Peyton, but that is two I would agree with (Coughlin and Fox). Your other three were 20 years ago. Different time and place in the NFL. But I did not qualify my statement so I cannot argue.
Not fired
