but it was Stephen Belichick?
Currently the younger Belichick (Bill's son) is a defensive assistant for the Pats (Safeties), but also has play calling duties starting this year.
Initially I thought Stephen was there purely for nepotism, but I've been listening to his interviews, mannerisms, and habits and it seems like he's turning into a clone of his dad (in a good way).
Rutgers guy too, so he's local to the Giants to an extent, and he played football for a year (LS) under Schiano.
Would this be like getting tickets to see Frank Sinatra and looking closely and noticing it's Frank Sinatra, Jr or would this be exciting to you? One wrinkle is maybe Bill comes along too as GM or President or something like that even though I don't think it's Bill's strongest attribute. Does that change things?
I'd be interested ... optimistic ... cautiously excited.
Thank you for your post. Why don't you tell me what is happening. Period.
then when Bill retires, we have little little bill
that will work
Plus, he's essentially the Patriots DC since they don't have a DC.
Do not expect it to happen, that's not my point, but it would be a ballsy hire.
Thus why it'll never happen with Mara.
Shurmur had head coaching experience.
Why not? I'd venture to guess he'd be a million times better than what we currently got, which isn't saying much, but still.
Is it likely? Probably not. But its not entirely out of the question. Any team serious about hiring a new HC would definitely be doing their homework on him.
All we need is a rumor the Eagles are going to make him their new DC or something.
Isn't that how McAdoo happened?
Let him get a DC gig somewhere and see how he does on his own.

That the Giants' next HC will have to have head coaching experience. After going with back-to-back OCs, I doubt they go with the next hot coordinator or up-and-coming great football mind.
Shurmur had head coaching experience.
Will have to have successful head coaching experience.
Fixed it for ya!
Not no, but absolutely no fucking way no. I would burn all of my Giants gear in the parking lot.
It worked for Shula’s kids why don’t we just promote Shula . . .

It wouldn't be a ballsy hire, it would be lunacy. WTF has Steven Belichick done to even warrant an interview? We have no idea what his role is in NE, or how much influence his father has in running that defense. Stop the madness!

Because this Shula has not helped our offense?

Where? Name one. Ridgewood HS?
Sean McVay, IMO, one of the better young coaches in the league, had what, one/two years as a DC before being named HC?
He's the same age as Stephen Belichick.
I'm not advocating for this, just a discussion about it.
but most of the "no" or "no fucking way" are not solid arguments against it.
Even Doug Pederson had just a couple years as a coordinator before becoming a HC.
Kingsbury was never even an NFL coordinator before becoming a HC. He was a college head coach, and not for long, but never even an NFL coordinator.
anyway, I think it's a good discussion, but I love when people get angry and lob insults because of a thread like this. lol. lighten up francis.
Normally the progression is positional assistant, coordinator, head coach.
Not sure how long Reid was in pro coaching though.
How long has the younger BB been doing this?

this is Stephen's 8th year in a coaching role. Not a ball boy or gopher, but a coaching role.
But he also had years under Gruden in Tampa getting experience.
BB the younger has been doing it how long?
Also - I didn't realize he's actually running the defense......I thought he was being broken in as a positional coordinator (db's).
Is there a link saying he calls the plays? Or is this just what people think?
Sorta interesting.
I take back the "can't be serious" lol
Well, the fact he calls the defense.......I think you would.
In fact, Steve Burns might get more credit since he doesn't have the Bellichick name (nepotism)...........
Stupid comment since we had this discussion a couple years ago but it was about Matt Patricia and Josh McDaniels.
NE's own website lists him as a safeties coach, so is he calling defensive plays or coverage? If being raised by a great coach meant anything, how come Mike Shula and Mike Nolan aren't lifting any Lombardi trophies? I'm all for thinking outside the box, but this more like thinking within the loony bin.
I'm talking credibility.
I'm sure McVay went thru that too, but he had success instantly and winning breeds respect. McVay is established, literally after two seasons and a SB.
BB the younger would be under an intense microscope by the players, everywhere in fact just due to the name.
But I'll change my tune a bit......very interesting.

This isn't the coaching tree, this is DNA LOL!!!!
But it seems he is calling the plays. And if he indeed is, and game planning, that's significant IMO.
I believe even Patricia wasn't listed as the DC but called the plays, just like the current Miami coach, right?

Bring Dad and son in with dad as HC with Stephen to be groomed to follow. The Giants love the family stuff...
And for the record, explain it how you want, competition, division, the GM, whatever reason you want, but the Patriots defense is on a pace to probably get them top 10 in fewest points allowed.
here is a blurb about play calling:
The Boston Herald reports that several players confirmed Steve Belichick has taken over the primary play calling role. That contradicts some previous reports that inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo was calling the defensive plays.
The Patriots have gone through three defensive coordinators in the last two years: Matt Patricia left to coach the Lions, then Brian Flores left to coach the Dolphins, then Greg Schiano resigned for personal reasons. Steve Belichick, who’s in his eighth year working for his dad, is the defensive coach who’s been with the program the longest.
Obviously, Steve Belichick wouldn’t be where he is without his dad giving him the job. And even if Steve is the primary play caller, his father undoubtedly deserves most of the credit for the well-coached Patriots defense. But players in New England have raved about their experience working with Steve Belichick. And even though the Patriots are always tight-lipped about the role that any individual coach plays in preparing the team, Steve Belichick is starting to get more credit for his own coaching work.

Played lacrosse at rutgers with steve. Was at his wedding. Talk all the time. So i am telling you whats not happening.
Give him a shot and if he is successful then promote him.

We have a bottom-dwelling defense for years (outside of 2016). What's he gonna do make us worse? I don't see that as possible. Steve is a football junkie. His dad doesn't want to see him fail. Lil Bill has been teaching him the nuances of the game for years.
+1 (If you want BB without giving up draft choices, do this and wait a year).
Let him get a DC gig somewhere and see how he does on his own.
I think this is right. He's needs some DC experience (like his dad had).
That being said, wouldn't surprise me in the least to see him get hired as a head coach at some point. Jaguars are infatuated with everything Patriots-related. I could see Kahn making a play for Steve Belichick if his next coach doesn't work out.

k
Thank you for you usual value added contribution.
I included it just for geography. Some times people will say "he's a west coast guy or he's from Texas, etc." but because Belichick went to Rutgers to me it means he at least to the extent he had a choice, enjoys New Jersey.
I'd do $$$EVERYTHING$$$ in my power to pry Harbaugh out of Michigan...including giving him final veto on football decisions.
