Nerdy movie that you know isnt cool and hip dawg but you still dig it in your heart, ya see? Whatever slang you want to use and however you want to define it.
...Maybe one of John Carpenter's best. Jeff Bridge's and Karen Allen in an alien-romance movie.
Seemed like it was on HBO daily in the mid 80s. Anyway, I love John Carpenter movies and I guess this might qualify as a dork movie. Link - ( New Window )

We watched two old John Carpenter movies this week: They Live and Escape from New York.
Two nuns from a French convent arrive in a small Connecticut town with a plan to build a children's hospital. They enlist the help of several colorful characters in achieving their dream including a struggling artist, a popular songwriter, and a renowned racketeer.
from Revenge of the Nerds (which may not even qualify) I'll submit WarGames.
Some of you are too young, but for those who aren't, who didn't want to get a computer after that and try and dial up video game companies with a modem? Or who didn't try to go to a pay phone and put a coin or piece of metal on the wire in the receiver to make a free phone call.
count? If so, that's on my list too with Revenge of the Nerds and WarGames.
I like a lot of dork movies if those count.
If you open up the nerd/dork comedy you have an avalanche of movies like American Pie, Superbad, and a ton more - that theme is common in holllywood teen comedies throughout history
Besides me lobes October Sky. Many reasons. Based on a true story ( I think the book was called “The Rocket Boys” by Homer Hickam the principle character). The father -son story had a lot of depth and it was the first tine Ii took note of Jake Gyllenhaul (probably misspelled).
There's a movie playing on cable now, it's called "Aloha"
I don't know if it's dorky, but it has a crazy science plot. It stars Bradley Cooper, Bill Murray, Danny McBride, and John Krasinsky. If all that isn't enough, it also has Rachel McAdam and Emma Stone for eye appeal. And it was written and directed by Cameron Crowe.
There's a plot too complicated to summarize here, but it includes a space launch and a killer satellite.
Actually, I'm going to have to watch the whole thing again, as I couldn't take my eyes off of Rachel McAdam long enough to catch the plot.

They Live is great! Definitely qualifies as a dork movie!
Kid (played by Henry Thomas- E.T.) being chased by foreign spies because he has possession of an Atari video game cartridge with sensitve military secrets in it. He's guided along the way by the game's protagonist, Jack Flack, who is an imaginary character played by Dabney Coleman. Most memorable part was when he'd been "sheltered" by an elderly couple, but they turned out to be the enemy and chloroformed him. I've never forgotten how my jaw dropped when the old lady pulled back her glove to reveal she was missing a hand (which pegged her as one of the spies).
Great call on Wargames. Younger folks these day sound surprised when I share stories of how Cold War era/nuclear war fears were still a real thing growing up in the early 80s
Agree with Weird Science and Revenge of the Nerds
Some others
Young Sherlock Holmes
The Last Starfighter
Short Circuit
Meatballs
Just One of the Guys

You just reminded me of another "dorky" movie that was released a year after Cloak & Dagger:

The getting-hit-by-the-car scene is ridiculous and it's three hours of virtually nothing happening. But I love that damn movie. Hopkins is stellar. And Brad Pitt and Claire Forlani are hot as hell. And I think the writing is great.
are we talking about:
A. Movies about Dorks
B. Movies that are dorky (corny)
C. Movies that only dorks understand or really like
?
The details are in the OP. However YOU want to define the term dorky/nerdy is really up to you. After many attempts over the years of trying to start innocuous discussion threads, we get those same members who just decide to crash threads and tell us all what isn't a certain genre and what isn't. That always depends on what the throwaway thread is about, of course. I'm just accounting for those guys and letting you guys deal with them yourselves, haha.
And those BBI members who have to leave their college professor red pen ink all over the site's pages never seem to add any of their choices (the true purpose of the thread) to the fun discussions.... ever. Odd.
If the comment about being the college professor with red pen was about me, I should probably note that I'm a college drop out so you are a little off there. Anyway I did plan on responding.
A. Movie about dorks - Napoleon Dynamite is an excellent choice
B. Movie that is dorky or corny - Big Trouble in Little China
C. Movie that dorks understand or relate to - Scott Pilgrim vs the world, not my favorite but definitely dorky worth mentioning. You could almost nominate anything with Michael Cera
D. Movie that makes me a dork for liking - the original Teenage mutant Ninja Turtles
I don't know if I would classify Top Gun as a dork/nerd type movie.
For me its really corny (in a good way). So yeah not nerdy but definitely dorky and corny (to me atleast).
Yeah I can see where you are coming from, still can't believe that movie came out in 1986. There is definitely some corniness with regards to certain scenes (beach volleyball).
I just hope with the new top gun they spared no expense with regards to the flight scenes. Actually looking forward to it.
Starship Troopers is a dork movie? Just rewatched it last night
because I always loved it, but always jokingly said it was a cinematic masterpiece. After rewatching it, I'm not so sure it's not. I can't believe a movie like that with a big budget actually got made. Satire like that usually gets shot down by producers for the big money flicks.
That's got rocket science nerd stuff written all over it. LOVE it!

it was maybe the height of nerdiness in the 80's.
belching contest a classic.

Top Gun and Roadhouse as well.
I wanted to watch this last week but couldn't find it anywhere, not even available on iTunes or Amazon to rent. Weird.

"You Mu's sure can party!"
great call. Another good one.
Chet was awesome.
For fellow Krull enthusiasts, it currently streams for free on Pluto TV.
"Shit, we forgot to practice".

Ha! Carpenter writes the music for all his movies as well. Including the classic Halloween theme.
But the new Jumanji movies with The Rock/Kevin Hart/Jack Black are funny.
+1, Bama. +1
