NFT: Whitney Houston's SB Star Spangled Banner

Still gives me chills and gets me to this day.

SSB - ( New Window )
So sad what happened to her...
sb from NYT Forum : 4/26/2021 5:48 pm : link
...she was the biggest star on the planet in 1991-92.

When she died my kids were like "who's that?"
The situation in the Middle East...

and Desert Storm really made that rendering an emotional lift that nobody can forget. The fact that the Giants also won the game was the icing on the cake.
My favorite version ever
mattlawson : 4/26/2021 5:56 pm : link
And had nothing to do with the giants. Flawless IMO. It cannot be topped
Didn't she lip-synch it?
PwndPapi : 4/26/2021 5:58 pm : link
Great moment, nonetheless. But it sure takes something away from it for me.

Sorry, Marvin Gaye topped it.

To each his own.
Whitney Houston's version, IMHO, was over the top
Stan in LA : 4/26/2021 6:04 pm : link
Typical version for that time.

Yes, apparently they all lip synch to pre-recorded music
She is buried in the same cemetery as my father in law...
EricJ : 4/26/2021 6:06 pm : link

That alone disqualifies it from any consideration for GOAT.
Whitney's Version Was Perfect...
Jim in Tampa : 4/26/2021 6:16 pm : link
Given the timing with America at war...even if it was pre-recorded.

Best version I ever heard live was (believe it or not) done by Meatloaf at a Yankees/Indians game at the Jake in the mid-90s.

Linked below is Meatloaf's 1994 MLB All Star Game rendition.

Meatloaf - ( New Window )
a loaf of meat???? over Whitney

Very sad, a combo of drugs and Bobby Brown ruined her career and ultimately her life.

91 second version of the Anthem without frills or aggrandizing..Houston's was as good a version as I have every heard.
I was fortunate enough
YANKEE28 : 4/26/2021 6:38 pm : link
to be there that day and it was truly amazing. So was the military flyover that followed.

For us old timers, we were fortunate enough to have incredible Anthem's prior to home games.

For me, the greatest was Philip Creech with Mel Broiles accompanying him with the trumpet.

Martha Wright sang the Anthem for over 25 years, starting in '61. In her last few years at the Stadium, she was joined by Broiles with the trumpet.

Wright was great, but Philip Creech was simply the best I have ever heard sing the Anthem, and he did it for Giants fans for every home game for about 10 years, including our 1st two Super Bowl seasons.
Reading about
pjcas18 : 4/26/2021 6:43 pm : link
this in wikipedia, it seems Whitney re-recorded the anthem after 9-11 and donated all proceeds to firefighters and victims from the 9-11 attacks. It is the only time the National Anthem cracked the top 10 (#6) on the billboard chart. It was the last top 10 song she had before her death.

she had a great voice.
Single greatest vocal performance of all time

Gave me chills @ 10. Still does.

She was an amazing talent, but had her demons sadly.

Ready to be shipped out and watched that. What a feeling, I’ll never forget how sobering that was for everybody in the room.
She lip synced it
gtt350 : 4/26/2021 9:44 pm : link
You have to sing it live to be a performance
Brother and I were there

doesn't look impressed.
they could have played the recording she didnt even have to be there
gtt350 : 4/28/2021 10:46 am : link
dont you get it. it was a fraud
The logistics
BigBluesman : 4/28/2021 11:23 am : link
of performing live at such an event are on a scale beyond my comprehension. She cut that vocal. It doesn't matter that it wasn't live. It is very early '90s, to be sure.

I also think Marvin's is best. Meat Loaf was really good! Thanks for that.
it absolutely does matter if it is live or not
gtt350 : 4/28/2021 11:38 am : link
.
would you go to a concert if you knew it was pre recorded
gtt350 : 4/28/2021 11:41 am : link
. and some are but that's the Brittany Spears crowd not to be confused with Whitney Houston
God was that an amazing night
jpkmets : 4/28/2021 11:50 am : link
I was a freshman at Georgetown. We got the upstairs room at a long-deceased restaurant on M street with a projection TV upstairs. I'll remember about 20 giants fans running into a sedate DC evening screaming our heads off after Wide Right.

Whitney's anthem was the perfect choice for that moment. One of the greatest nights of the year. Calling my dad from a pay-phone (collect -- remember that) - on Wisconsin Avenue was just glorious.

A perfect, perfect night.
