No offense to our Yankee fan brethren, but perhaps your concerns are not ours and your joy is not ours.

Scherzer on the bump...lets get the sweep and keep up with that team in ATLANTA THAT DOES NOT LOSE.
Scherzer on the bump tonight. LGM!
probably self-evident in the fact that someone felt the need to start a Mets-only....which I am currently violating as a NYY fan. I'm friendly and mostly reasonable, but I'll show myself out and respect your wishes.

I remember the days of Islanders-Rangers thread...now those were bad.
Having said that, I nervously paced through last night's game and was so happy to have won it.
LGM and take it tonight!
Can't wait!
On the Yankee side it was the usual "the umps all suck", never any credit to the opponent routine.

The umps sucked? That is a bizarre take for any educated fan watching last night's game. Do they think it's dodgeball and Lindor should have been called out?
robot umps can't get here fast enough.
robot umps can't get here fast enough.
As long as a home plate ump is consistent on the strike zone, I am fine. The ump last night didn't have the overly huge strike zone that a lot of them do. But it was consistent for both the teams.

Mets fan, of course, and yeah, Nimmo's AB was interesting. 100% factored that he worked the pitch count to 9 right outta the gate. Couple of those pitches ... yikes. lol But we'll take it!
Hate the idea of "robo-umps." Terrible, terrible idea IMO.
And when a mediocre player on another team gets a hit, they lose their shit. But it's ok when Falafel or whoever gets a few hits in a game.

Right, but of course it was said in the context of only to the Mets benefit.

he squeezed montgomery in the first ahead of marte's homer and he missed a bunch of calls later in the game with the mets bp.

whenever ive seen it experimented with it seems to go over fine and like KD said, all anyone wants is consistency. put the umps back there, give them the robo feed, and the discretion to overrule something they think is egregious.

Nimmo has established himself as one of the best eyes in the game, so he seems to get the benefit of the doubt. I'm sure you're old enough to remember the Maddux and Glavine strike zones when they were with the Braves (oddly the Glavine strike zone didn't seem to follow him to the Mets).

I just want to see the Mets build on their lead against a Braves team that is not going to go away.

Hey, I like to tweak those fools. I wasn't calling anyone a (excuse my language here) cunt, bitch, cum guzzler, or whatever else nonsense that dude from whatever insane asylum he was in was typing. IIRC Koufax had to learn to do the same, and when he did, he became an elite pitcher. JDG is already elite. If he gained more control with a little less velocity, he'd be just as hard to score on, but probably wouldn't miss as many bats.
Vogelbach is a .900 OPS bat against righties. So technically we already did. But we definitely need somebody that mashes lefties too.
P.S. Donaldson made a helluva play on the infield hit by Canha. Tremendous bare-handed throw.
Are we out on Contreras?
Really? Hope not.

De Grom has been pushing the limits of what the human body can do. He may have pretty much reached those limits. So he may have to learn to hold back a bit most of the time and save his best stuff for when he needs it. That approach used to be common — Christy Mathewson had it in his advice for young pitchers in his autobiography, written about 100 years ago — but it's less so today because anybody in the lineup can hit the ball out of the park. De Grom going about 90% is still probably one of the best pitchers in the game.

Do you know something we don't know in regards to next years schedule?
German did well for them. He only threw 82 pitches, but whatevs. Time to dig into their pen. Need to take advantage now.
Down a RHP with Holderman gone.

We need to trade for Robertson and give him the 8th. Drew Smith makes me cringe.

We need a power blast in the bottom of the 9th to finish this.

Disagree, better to find out now and show the front office that no matter how much they wish it to be, Peterson's not going to be a late inning Lefty out of the pen

Again, just before the deadline Buck needed to find out if Peterson is a lefty option late. Now the front office knows he isnt. Could be someone in the front office (a dope like Alderson) was pushing for Peterson to be that guy late in the pen - so Buck said Ok, lets find out
Lugo with his best outing of the season, by far. Would be huge if he could turn it around and be the Lugo of 2019
Buck has been great, and all’s well that ends well
I hope we bring the same tenacity when we play the Braves next week with everything on the line.
I think he's older and might just need to be babied more. He seems a lot stronger and more effective coming off longer rests. So maybe we use him only 2-3 times a week. I'd be good with that if we go out and add Robertson+
I agree with this. Keep Peterson stretched out, starting in AAA. That way, if needed, he is available to start (ie. the Braves 5 game series)

Also, 4 pitch walk. Sure it's his fault. Throw a strike. You're not some deer in headlights rookie.

Mets have got 64 games left---33 at home and 31 on the road, with 12 of those against the Bravos (5 in Citi and 7 in ATL). Other than the Braves, the only other teams that stand out remaining on the schedule are the Dodgers (3 in Citi) and Yanks (2 on the road).
The remaining schedule should be easy. Just gotta get healthy and win 6 out of 12 against the Braves. the 5 game series coming up in Queens on 8/4-7 with a doubleheader on the 6th is gonna be huge. Gotsta get deGrom back as well as the other injured dudes (Megill, May, and McCann if they don't trade for Contreras). Need to trade for Robertson A.S.A.P. as well.

+1. Yes, I want Robertson and Contreras also.. I think The Mets can do it even without JDG. Would JDG make it sweeter and easier? Yes, absolutely, but I think with Scherzer, Walker, Carrasco, Bassett and Peterson, they have just enough pitching, and I think if they add one more bat, like Contreras, they would have enough balance.
After seeing Judge strike out three times against Scherzer, they went out and got Benintendi. How funny

Great coffee this morning.
For anyone who wants to know what being a competitor is all about, just watch Max Scherzer.
Now can we please trade for Contreras and Robertson?
LMAO. That's awesome Z! Whenever he steps to the plate, there's always a threat of the longball. It'd be even better if the Mets sign Judge in the offseason. My brother brought that up to me months ago and I laughed it off. Now...not so much. Imagine his bat in the lineup next year hitting after Lindor and Pete?
coffee tastes extra good this morning.
Lopez, Joely, Drew Smith, and Hunter are obvious roster spots to upgrade, probably in that order.
Nogosek and May are going to be up sooner rather than later, but one of them can come up as a corresponding move for Peterson. He will likely be needed to start 1 game of the double header in a few weeks vs. Atlanta in 2 weeks so either he can go down ahead of that to stay stretched out at AAA for a couple starts for either May/Nogosek without roster implications for at least 2 deadline additions.
separately i think we should send the yanks a fruit basket for the benintendi trade. the 2 pitchers most analysts seem to think of as viable prospects in that deal were a 24 year old in A+ and a 23 year old in A+, both 40 grade 4th round picks. im sure there's stuff to like about each of them but they seem firmly on butto/szpuck/orze/santos/hamel level in the mets system. contreras may go for more than that since he's a catcher but they should be able to get 1 of bell/cron/mancini for a similar type of deal (as allegedly their offer was on bell).

Mets and Yankees continue to be two of the teams showing interest in veteran reliever David Robertson.
The 37-year-old has a 1.83 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and 50 strikeouts in 39 1/3 innings for the Cubs this year.

with the 5% overage i think after today's signings they have about $500k left they can go over. so i guess the question is how far over does Sproat get? $300k over slot gets him to 1m (a nice round target #) and that would be the 2nd most over slot relative to the players he was selected around (reimer, tidwell, morabito). if the rest went to Parada that would get him close to $5m.
d'andre Smith is the only other top 10 round pick unsigned but that seems like a possible underslot sign?

They make a case for Peterson over Carrasco based on stats but also say it's a tough choice and pose the idea of a 6 man rotation to keep Jake healthy. We all know Cookie isn't going to the bullpen. I was actually surprised that Peterson's stats are better.
But I could imagine DeGrom throwing heat for the first 5 or 6 innings, and then turning it over to the Big Lefty's off speed stuff. Change the angles, change the speeds....would drive a Batting Order crazy. Remember how RA Dickey's knuckleball used to screw up a team for 2 days after he pitched ??
I'd keep Carrasco in the rotation and see if DP could piggy-back on DeGrom's starts.
Snablats I think had a good point about bringing him into that situation to show the front office what's needed if I'm not mistaken. Peeps were heated after Scherz pitched as magnificently as he did. On a sidenote: Props to Lugo for last night coming in doing the job that he did. Definitely a positive.

Here is an update on Mets /Cubs trade talks. Smith and Nido could make sense as part of a package.
Andy Martino @martinonyc
1h
Preliminary talks can accelerate quick this time of years. One source said to keep and eye on Mets/Cubs over next 36 hours or so.
also notable -
Nido has 2 ARB years left that i'd imagine in total will cost about 1/3 of what McCann's 2 remaining years will cost ($24m) so he's clearly the more appealing asset right now since they are similar and he's way less expensive.
McCann's contract is obviously dead weight but if the mets could take on some extra $ this year getting rid of McCann's deal would be a big help in possibly being able to extend Contreras. A package of Robertson, Contreras, and say Wade Miley (only pitched 19 innings this year, currently on IL in final year of his deal worth $10m) would still save the Cubs around $6m this year even if they took back McCann, Dom, and prospects. But the Cubs would be taking on a net of $18m.
So McCann is probably a bridge too far if the mets dont want to give up top 6 prospects. A deal like that with Nido's 2 cheap years would save them even more money in the present and fill some holes cheaply in the future is likely a lot more appealing. Dom, Nido, Butto, Megill for Contreras, Robertson, Miley. who knows, maybe Miley can work out of the BP?

if the red sox decide they are out the below is some version of the deal i'd look to do. would still need to find another reliever elsewhere in addition to barnes, and maybe 2 if you aren't confident in whatever he's shown in recent rehab outings. but with drew smith possibly done they may need 3 BP arms anyway.

Barnes is terrible. He lost his closer job, then got hurt and is getting shellacked in Worcester (in his 2 appearances). Adding him is a net negative.
I like JDM, and to a lesser extent Kike and Vasquez, but I think this is an overpay by the Mets.

barnes is basically just a comparable net negative to being able to dump mccann. mccann may be more useful but he's actually a little more expensive the next 2 years so he may be the bigger net negative but it's close.
like i said they'd probably still need to add 2 other relievers beyond barnes in other deals.
Among the extra arms the Mets are bringing to Miami are Stephen Nogosek and lefty Sam Clay.
Nogosek, who figures to be at least a short-term Drew Smith replacement, has been as dominant at Triple-A (0.99 ERA) as he was in the Majors (0.71 ERA).
I think he was almost out of options if not completely so they didn’t want to burn on a short term call up.
he likely would have been called up a month or two ago if there were unlimited ups/downs like years past.
