INF Brett Baty underwent an MRI earlier today that revealed a UCL tear in his right thumb. He has been placed on the 10-Day IL, retroactive to Aug. 29. He will undergo surgery tomorrow. A typical return to play for this type of injury is five weeks.
Ok, with Baty's injury, even I think Vientos should have been the call there.

Fudge! They brought up the discomfort in his thumb when it happened on the telecast. He should be back by the end of the season or the start of the playoffs hopefully. This makes the speedy return of Luis G all the more important and needed.

Dicomo is saying he is likely done for the season.
I just don’t get it. At this point, the lack of logic around this is really weird.
The roster spots are clearly there and the gm and president both said he was ready a month ago - before his best month of the season. When the clock strikes midnight tonight no new players can be postseason eligible so what they have on the 40 is what they get. Vientos is already there so not giving him a little prep time now to see if he hits is just asking for a crappy AAAA automatic out in the future now that Batys season is over.
This sort of reminds me of when they refused to let Flores play SS for like a year and then utley sawed tejada in half and they were forced to play Flores at SS in the nlcs and ws. And he did fine btw. It was the veterans who threw the ball away.
Damn. That's a good point. We need Baty next year and in the future going forward too.

Relax. Rosters expand tomorrow. This is a move just for today’s game

Dodgers @ Mets - Game 2: 8/31/22 - 7:10 pm EST start - SNY Feed - ( New Window )
there's no reason to not add both. 13 pitchers are more than enough. They said they want Megill to get 5 outings in the minors out of the pen so that's minimum 10 days. Drew Smith is behind that.
Gore as a pinch runner can help - they would have put him in last night and he probably would have gotten them a hit away from tying the game. but they have 0 backup IFers right now. He and Perez don't solve that so you are either wasting a spot on Sanchez/Marrero again or giving Vientos a shot hoping you don't actually have to put him in the field.
Braves are leading the Rockies now in Atlanta 2-0 in the middle of the 2nd.

not on the 40 man any more.
Love Costas.
Nice play by Marte...

Mets are looking for defensive versatility in finalizing Sept. call up decision, and Mark Vientos does not fit that description. Team considers him an improving 3B but it doesn’t sound likely that he’ll be here tomorrow.

The whole thing reeks of pride (particularly of the CYA variety).
The whole thing reeks of pride (particularly of the CYA variety).
the craziest thing is he's played 3b every day (today included) since before Baty got called up and im pretty sure he hasn't made an error in the month of august.
he can play 2 positions if needed and im pretty sure he has the highest OPS vs. lefties in the entire organization (which to me seems to be a bigger need than an extra glove/auto out).
Joe DeMayo @PSLToFlushing
I understand versatility mattering.
But with the way Darin Ruf is struggling and how Mark Vientos handled LHP in AAA, I can’t be convinced they should be calling up Yolmer Sanchez/Gosuke Katoh/Deven Marrero etc instead.
Luis Guillorme will be back soon enough with versatility
Ahem...I hate to say I told you so, but before yesterday's game, where I believe he got 2hits, I predicted(cough, cough,), that Escobar was going to start hitting.

he's been good against LHP and against LAD that seems potentially significant.

I think we'll get 7 out of him. 8 is pushing it.
it almost reads comedic when you see it spelled out like this:
It doesn't appear Mark Vientos will be coming up tomorrow, despite injuries to Baty and Guillorme (and, previously, Escobar).
Vientos has a .902 OPS at Triple-A and has cut his K rate significantly in recent weeks. He's already on the 40-man. But those factors weren't enough.
"despite at least 3 good reasons better than whoever they pick, it sounds like they are choosing someone else who won't hit, will k, and isn't already on the 40 man so he will force someone else on it to waivers"
Our offense must step up!!!

I'm assuming he's done for the night. His season high for pitches was 95 before tonight and still is after, assuming he's done. We need someone to get us to Diaz in the 9th (Ottavino?).

It feels like it. This is a referendum for both squads going up against each another.
Yes! Though having McNeil further down does lengthen the lineup

It'll take a collapse on their part though for the Mets to catch them. I do want the win tomorrow though, just in case. Haha. Ya never know, right?
LOL. Spahn and Sain, and pray for rain! Remember?

A win is huge to fend off the Braves
Kershaw is probably good for only 5, so pound the pen
That was awesome. You can totally feel how excited he was. I loved the story of how it was a big deal one time when he said Hell Yes because to him that's a swear. And the entire team rallied around him saying Hell Yes.
The other thing I noticed over 4 games of watching him in Miami this year is he always hustles. First guy into his position and first outfielder back to the dugout every inning. Last guy in from warm ups every time. Absolutely loves playing the game. Hope he's a Met for life.
Great win. Diaz was done in like five minutes and made it look easy.

Maybe it’s not tomorrow I guess but Mark Vientos has to get a shot over Darin Ruf at some point. Ruf was acquired to be the thump vs lefties and that simply hasn’t occurred.
Ruf’s stat line as a Met through 36 at bats (SSS):
.194/.250/.278 (.528 OPS) with 0 home runs

That must have been heartbreaking after the 1957 season, for BOTH NL NY squads to vacate the premises. I figured fans in their 20s must have had a harder time to deal with it than 10-12 year olds. What a unique and odd situation.
It could be LA people and Manhattan/ Williams burg transplants who knows ; they were all going on the west bound train. Probably just hardcore Brooklyn people

I hear you Dennis. Sports really can function as an escape. What happens though when the "escape" escapes? I wouldn't have rooted for the Yankees if they paid me. Thank God for Bill Shea and the whole Continental Baseball League thing. I grew up in Flushing and Long Island, so it was in my blood to be a Mets fan.
I couldn't begin to fathom what I'd do if the Mets left. That's why I'm glad the Browns got to keep their name and records in Cleveland until they restarted play in 1999 four years after the left after the 95 season. The Mets really are the Dodgers and Giants successor: the colors, the fanbase, and our dislike for the Yankees, lol. You must have been through the rough in 69 and 86 though!
P.S. I'm getting better, but still not outta the woods. I took a PCR test and I don't have COVID, fortunately. I need to see the doc though to diagnose this. My guess is that it's either pneumonia or sever sinusitis. Thanks for asking. Hope you're doing well too :-)

Yes, you're absolutely right, the Dodgers were an escape and a role model, something I could love absolutely.
We lived near Flushing, in Kew Garden Hills for awhile, just before they divorced.
69 and 86 were great years. Especially '69 when the Mets were finanlly really good, and I met my first real girl friend, and Woodstock happened. It was a magical summer.
I'm happy to hear you're feeling better! I hope it's not pneumonia, and just(just?)sinusitis. In either case, I'm sure you know the routine; lots of rest, fluids, and Mets victories to lift your spirits.

I was at Ebbets Field once. I was in maybe 3rd grade, the whole class went in buses. It must have been 56or 57, just before they left, because we never went again.
It was small, very intimate, you felt like if you stretched your arm out, you could touch the players. The Dodgers were playing, I believe, the St. Louis Cards. A guy named Vinegar Bend Mizell was pitching for the Cards, I don't know who was pitching for the Dodgers. The thing I remember the most was the players talking to each other, that kind of chanting mantra players sometimes do during a game? I had never heard anything like it before. It was totally alien to me, and I've never forgotten it.

The Mets Sept callups are Adonis Medina and Devan Marrero, source says. Terrence Gore will also stay

I though the same and totally agree, great call snab.
Oh wait, Alderson said it was because of his awful Baez trade
Why is this 30 year loser still ruining this team? He hasn't built a winner since he created the steroid era over 30 years ago
Well... the other way to look at it is that there is too much redundancy with Ruf...
Which means the deadline mistake was trading JD+ for Ruf instead of using those assets for relief help (assuming there was a robust relief market...lol)
Most of us hated the Ruf trade right away, then warmed to it once we dug into the platoon splits...
Fact is.. if Ruf hit vs lefties like everyone expected, then we wouldn't be having this conversation (and the Mets would probably have 1-2 more wins)
I guess the logic at this point in time is they still have more confidence that Ruf will turn it around than they do of Vientos being more productive.

Something's gotta give. Guillorme can't return soon enough!
Citi Field was rocking!
Fucking Escobar hitting .218 ... granted 3-for-8 vs. LA this series and a terrific stop to end it last night, but ... .218!
just like a lot of the met lineup he doesn't k and has a track record of producing in big games.
with vazquez they also could have then promoted vientos into rufs spot instead of wasting a good prospect in the minors who excels at the exact things they need. linked is a good article from the athletic today - my one enduring criticism of the team in the last couple months is that they have been way to paint by numbers in their roster approach. they are trying to emulate the dodgers but i could not agree with the sentence below more - stop worry about what guys can't do and see what they can do.
And what Vientos does well — has done really well in Triple A this season — fits what the Mets could use.
some other encouraging excerpts:
“His strike-zone management is definitely improving,” Syracuse manager Kevin Boles said earlier this week. “He’s recognizing right-handed spin a lot better than what we’ve seen in the past. He’s definitely effective against left-handed pitching.
“He’s really been consistent.”
Boles was especially encouraged by the way Vientos reacted when he was passed over for a possible promotion two weeks back, the Mets opting to bring up Baty to play third base instead. That offered Vientos a chance to mope; he did the opposite.
“Watch what he did in Charlotte when that happened: He was International League Player of the Week,” Boles said. Baty was called up Aug. 17; that week, Vientos hit .448. “He’s responded in the right way.”
but hey, when you get a chance to put Devin Marrero on the bench you've got to take it right? Needless to say i could not agree with the bold in the story's kicker more.
The Mets passed up Vientos when J.D. Davis was struggling earlier this season, they passed him up when they made the four-for-one trade for Ruf, and they’ve passed him up twice now with a chance to make a late-season impact in a pennant race. This is the easiest missed opportunity of them all.
Mets could use a bat. Why isn’t prospect Mark Vientos the answer? - ( New Window )
That's .062, folks. Makes our catchers look like Tony Gwynn.
Ruf -- Ugh !! As far as I'm concerned, his name is JD Szapucki Zwack-Seymoour.
JD Davis has 4 homers.....I don't think Ruf has 4 singles yet.
Wonder what Buck and crew were missing with Davis that SF has figured out.
Wonder what Buck and crew were missing with Davis that SF has figured out.
supposedly the hand injury he had last year takes a year to recover from and get power all the way back.
i would caution that he probably still wasn't a great solution here - he's k'd 36% of the time SF and 33% on the season. his BABIP is .379 which is unsustainable. It was already almost unsustainably high as a met at .345. and his exit velocity is actually 4 mph lower on average than it was as a met down to 89 mph which is middle of the road from 93 mph as a met (which was excellent).
so basically he's hit 4 balls very well while making worse contact overall than he had as a met and all his stats look better because of the 4 homers.
if we got a do over on that one i wouldn't take it because i dont think anything he's done in SF bodes particularly well for him against better pitching.
vazquez is the big regret of the deadline (imo). and not giving vientos a shot since it would have been almost impossible for him to underproduce what ruf has done.
Wonder what Buck and crew were missing with Davis that SF has figured out.
They have a RH bat in the minors who is hitting the cover off the freakin' ball, but are inexplicably refusing to bring him up...
You’re right that Christian Vasquez would’ve been a nice upgrade.
I'm saying the answer was 4 hours away in Syracuse......with a 1.000 OPS. The Syracuse season ends in 2 weeks. Then what ?
Davis could have been used as a trade chip elsewhere, and the minor league system would still have some useful pitchers to develop.
Sandy dumbass signing McCann instead of Realmuto is continuing to kill the Mets. Having less than good 3B hitting would be palatable if we didnt have zero from the catcher position

exactly - the full Ruf package is what could have gone elsewhere.
Adding on to the Vazquez thing, Matt Barnes came back and pitched to a 2 era in August in 12 innings (he'd thrown just 17 innings before August due to injuries). he was pure dead salary at the deadline just like McCann and that could have easily been evened out with $.
the mets deadline went from widely panned and underrated, to widely praised and overrated, but is now settling in to exactly what it was. some solid additions but glaring omissions (RP and C).
their roster management has had issues all year but what's troublesome is that it keeps getting worse. if they called up Gore 1 day earlier they probably pinch run him when Escobar gets on and maybe Vogey doesn't hit into a DP. If he'd have stolen 2b, he probably advances and they have a runner on 3rd with 1 out. had they also called up Vientos instead wasting roster spots on relievers they aren't using they would have been able to pinch hit for a catcher earlier in the game. when Escobar/Guillorme originally got hurt they made the same mistake waiting a couple days before bringing up Baty.
Regardless of how you feel about McCann RIGHT NOW, the Mets ran a real risk if they waited Realmuto out
But frankly, I’m just sick of reading the same BS comments about Realmuto/Sandy every day. Give it a rest.
1. Nimmo
2. Lindor
3. Marte
4. Pete
5. Canha
6. Jeff
7. DH
8. Escobar
9. No-hit catcher of choice
not fair Nido hit a double last night :)

you guys know where I stand on Sandy so I wont go there, but as far as Realmuto.
The guy was on the IL 2/3 the 2020 season. Sandy would have gotten killed for that deal
Or the fact that this is the best time to be a Mets fan definitely in the last 36 years and maybe ever considering the outlook moving forward.
I feel like someone needs to pinch me when it comes to baseball these days.
Who was promoted in the offseason and placed in charge of scouting and acquiring pro players? That's right: Kyle Alderson
Kyle is also responsible for evaluating and recommending the guys the Mets obtained at the deadline, such as Ruf. So if you want to know why Vientos is not getting a chance to show he can fill the Ruf role better than Ruf, look up the word "nepotism"
But like most fathers, Sandy probably loves his son and over-estimates his ability. He probably expects these players Kyle has identified to outperform expectations.
And who knows maybe they will.
But Kyle's role is undoubtedly one of the factors in why Vientos is not being promoted. How big a factor is anyone's guess. But not a single reporter or other sports professional has come up with an even semi-plausible explanation for why Vientos has not even been given a chance.

Now, that’s his is something that I can get behind. It’s extremely plausible and it pisses me off. I was hoping that this club was past bullshit like this.
I would have hired buck.
but Buck has shown a protectiveness to veterans - his public defense of Ruf the other day included. His protectiveness of Escobar all year, and the playing time he gave JDD/Dom for 2 months despite underperformance.
I believe every organization is "collaborative" but I'd be really surprised if Buck's opinion doesn't hold the most sway in terms of who plays and who doesn't.
Managers who don't like the options they have try different players and change things up when they aren't working as a coda that they don't have what they need. Buck seems to think he has what he needs, and has seemed that way all year even when the DH production was worst in baseball pre-deadline.
*Alderson
Gore makes 100% sense. They may have tied the game on Tuesday if they had activated Gore 1 day earlier instead of playing like 3 guys short on the bench.
Why they are carrying 14 pitchers when they werent even using guys with 13 is the question. Trevor Williams hasn't pitched in like 11 days and counting.
they did, and even though Trevor Williams hasn't pitched in 11 days they brought up Adonis Medina, who has pitched once or twice a month when they had 12 pitchers not 14.
their roster management the past week has been a farce. there is no way to dispute that they are wasting roster spots because they simply aren't using people.
And the combo of Sandy/Bryn is why no top name executive would even interview with the Mets last winter
I was on board with bringing up Vientos now for playoff consideration because Ruf isnt exactly killing it, and its odd they didnt. Clearly something else is going on
