Greg Cossell on Cowerd talking about Jones

One point, Daboll was telling everyone what he thought about Jones in how much they threw that game.

And nothing wrong with saying fellow teammates help each other out. Wrs help QBs. QBs help WRs. When a guy isn't helping, it's time to replace him.

It's almost like this NFL thing is a team game concept.

That

IF

Jones lead this team to the playoffs, and I thought it likely at that point, they would DEFINITELY resign Jones. There was no way a first time head coach was going to go to the playoffs and start over the next year.

It was an easy prediction. What was laughable, was the people that were suggesting, Daboll may want to do something different..

Like what?

Not make the playoffs...lol.

Jones will be resigned and tools will be added.

Jones is not done ascending.

You keep doing this and I don’t know why. I’m sure the coaching staff really expected high production after Shep/Robinson were lost, Toney trades and Golladay being benched. To sit here and say that didn’t have a significant impact on the offense tells me all I need to know about your posting.

Ah yes - more nonsense from the guy who likes to only use stats that support his "argument", and ignores all others.

Ummm, you do realize there is more to being a QB than chucking the ball in the air every play, right?

Yes, let's forget his 700 yards and 7 TD's on the ground.

Let's also ignore a comparison between his WR's vs the WR's of the top passing teams. For normal people, context matters...

Here are more stats for you:

Chargers are 2nd in passing attempts, 5th in passing yards, 12th in passing TD's. Guess how many additional TOTAL POINTS the Chargers have scored than the Giants?

14. FOURTEEN! That's a whopping 0.8 more points per game. Wow, so impressive!

Here's another stat: Hebert has 23 total touchdowns this season; Jones has 22.

And one more: For all his attempts, Hebert's YPA is 6.8. Jones's YPA is.......wait for it.....6.8.

Chargers team record is 10-6, and NYG are......9-6-1

But please, tell us again why attempts and passing yards is so important for a team game!

djm : 1/5/2023 4:04 pm : link
I still say not every PPG number is created equal. There is inconsistent 22 PPG and there is consistent 22 PPG. There is mistake prone wide open anything goes and there is the Giants offense. Slow and steady wins the race. IT's been very very consistent all year long even if it has admittedly been slightly below average, until these last couple of weeks helped vault it to above average.

The 2018 NYG offense scored more pts, probably, do we like that one more? Don't get me wrong Eli did all he could that year but it was soft. Wasn't bad, but it was soft, especially on 3rd and 4th down short yardage.

Say what you want, this offense aint fucking soft. We all know that.

Minnesota is a bottom of the barrel passing defense. Therefore, it made total sense to have a high volume of passes to exploit it.

if you go by the numbers they aren't far off. every team plays basically 3 WRs, so there are 100 or so starting WRs (ignoring those on IR).

slayton is 44th in receiving yards with a good ypc and good catch rate.
james is 59th in receiving yards and the 2nd highest catch rate among qualifiers.

hodgins has 4 tds in 10 games and is actually averaging more YPG than James, but he's played fewer games so his total yardage numbers obviously rank lower.

they obviously don't have any high end difference making WRs but the 3 they are playing now are average-ish if you are encompassing the entire league. there are roughly 40-60 better players out there and 40-60 worse. they are right in the middle.

no question. but it cost philly, vegas, and miami 1st round picks+ via trade and 25-30m annually to get those guys last offseason. hollywood brown cost the same and im not sure he's even on that level.

that's why id expect the nyg first round pick to be a Wr in 4 months.

Enormous difference. Some teams you can get by with it but the better the quality of defensive opponent the more the issues show up.

Philly got bounced last year in the playoffs. Got behind and then the run game got squashed and Hurts had a rough day.

Hence the big trade imv.

It's not just the ones production. It's how it impacts coverage on the other guys.

Which proves once again that statistics mean next to nothing and in the hands of the unthinking they are the enemy of the truth. If there are 100 receivers an average receiving corps would have one ranked at 16, one at 48, and one at 81 (the rough average of each third). We have a 44th, a 59th, and no one, so lets call that 101. So an average total would be 145. Our total is 204. Or about a little more than 40% worse than average. Without doing the math I am near certain that is more than a standard deviation worse. Which is really bad. This of course is not the only way to judge our receiving corps. But if you want to use stats, it as at least an intelligent analysis of the data.

The 32 pass attempts against Washington wasn't that out of the ordinary. Jones came into that game averaging about 33+ attempts per game.

And in the Indy game, Jones threw 24 times.

So, Minnesota was a high-volume game that, again, made sense under the circumstances.

It’s always been about the pass protection.

The Giants are 2-5 when Jones is pressured 10 or more times.

They are 7-1-1 when Jones is pressured fewer than 10 times.

A lot of lazy ass observers wanted to pin it on Jones or the pass catchers, but it’s the pass protection.

Hodgins & James plus the return of Bellinger. Jones has def improved under Daboll, even if you subscribed to the theory he was pretty good masked by bad coaching you would have to admit he's improved this year, but overall I think the passing game development is more about the receiving options improving more than the QB.

All pretty exciting stuff. Jones improving under Daboll should make our pants a little tighter. So nice to have a strong coaching staff again.

PROE is a relative stat not a quantitative one. It measures the times a pass is called over identical historical situations. It takes into account gamescript, down and distance, environment, etc. The coaches are calling more passes in neutral or even run-first situations.

A 3 game sample is extremely small, so an outlier game like Minny could account for a lot of noise of course. But we're watching these games, the coaches clearly have a little more faith in the passing game recently. That's probably not all faith in Jones, probably has a little to do with the OL getting healthier and the WRs maturing into their roles in the offense too.

Is this correlation/causation? Can you break those two categories down by pressures as a % of dropbacks?

(I’m playing devils advocate here. Strongly believe OL is more important than receiving corps.)

The Giants are 2-5 when Jones is pressured 10 or more times.

They are 7-1-1 when Jones is pressured fewer than 10 times.

A lot of lazy ass observers wanted to pin it on Jones or the pass catchers, but it’s the pass protection.

Is this correlation/causation? Can you break those two categories down by pressures as a % of dropbacks?

(I’m playing devils advocate here. Strongly believe OL is more important than receiving corps.)

That stat could support running the ball more. Need a %.

Go look ok at the game stats as in box score. You will see a change in the run stats from team wins. It not always an absolute but you will see trends.

Lower YPA and rushing carries result in poor down distance situation.

This puts more pressure on the OL and the D at an advantage.

Our team is not built to deal with that environment often. Most teams aren’t

Rushing carries can help. But a negative or minimal gain on 1st down creates 2nd and long. Look at the RYPA in Giants losses. They evidence is there.

Sure, but whether it’s correlative or causal, it’s the same positive picture. No metric in football in of itself is causal in football (no matter what certain posters may claim :)

Each snap under pressure is a bad outcome. So whether you bring that number down by good protection, getting the ball out quickly, or running the ball well — all better outcomes than getting pressured.

If the Giants throw the ball a lot, and there are a small volume of pressures, that’s good. If the Giants throw the ball less, this could mean they are either ahead, really succeeding on the ground, or scheming around poor blocking effectively.
