The MLB draft starts July 9 with Rounds 1 and 2 (and the competitive balance rounds). The Mets have two picks on the first day, starting with No. 32. They had to move down 10 spots after exceeding the top luxury tax threshold. The team will have to do the same with the first round pick in the 2024 draft unless they land in the top six picks in the draft lottery.
The remaining 20 rounds will take place July 10 and 11. |
Injuries & Moves: Quintana to return after ASG - July 2nd, 2023
Quintana will get one more Minor League start before he makes his Mets debut after the All-Star break. The team is trying to figure out where he will pitch in the Minor Leagues.
“We have a tentative plan, but we have a lot of people to look at it and sign off on it because there are some things to think about during the All-Star break, post All-Star break,” manager Buck Showalter said. “[Quintana] feels good physically. That’s the great news." |

Anywho, feel free to chit chat away on this thread until tomorrow's game starting around mid-afternoon NY time. There's plenty to discuss. The die-hards will follow the club all summer and into the Fall, but it'll be interesting to see how much management does to reciprocate. They've got about 2 or three more weeks to show something or else the Mets will be sellers. Yesterday was a nice start, but more is needed. The Mets are 8 games behind the Giants, who currently hold the final Wildcard spot. Time is certainly a factor now.
Will the Mets be buyers or sellers in the trade market? Who will they call up? Who's on their draft radar? Discuss...
Mets' schedule for July - Mets.com - ( New Window )
I think it gets lost that they haven’t been producing major league relief pitchers either. Who’s the last good homegrown relief pitcher? Familia came up in 2012. Since then I can think of Lugo. Guys like Flexen and Sewald were not good with the Mets. Gsellman not good. I might be missing someone, but it has not been good
Lindor has a 10 year hold on shortstop. Alvarez should be behind the plate for a decade.Last year with picks 11 and 14 they selected a shortstop hitting 220 in the minors and a catcher hitting 260 and not throwing well. How this team will put together a competitive pitching staff,I don't know
I'm with you... can't afford anything less than that

Yeah, let’s judge draft picks 300 AB’s into their minor league careers.
Lately they’ve drafted some good pitchers later in the draft: Stuart, Scott, Vasil. They should get plenty of pitching with 7 picks in yhe 1st four rounds. I wouldn’t freak out if they go position player with their first pick

You don't draft in MLB based on your MLB roster. Take the best players at any position.

The mets farm system has few if any top pitching prospects.

Exactly. Having said that, the more young pitching they grab in the draft, the better.

And I will add, using BA to evaluate a player? The 70’s called, they want their stats back.

Jett Williams leads the ENTIRE FSL in OBP as a 19 year old and has a 126 wRC+. The Mets would make that pick 10/10. If you remove players 21 or over, Williams wRC+ would rank 5th in the entire league (again, he's 19), as it is he's 13th including the overage players.
.274/.432/.466-.898 OPS 3 homers, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 6 steals, 18 walks over 73 ab's. Monster month for a 19 year old SS
P.S. I was reading his ETA is somewhere between 2026 and 2028? Any update w/regard to that timetable?

I remember you talking him up prior to the draft. You hit on that one

If you believe the Mets, they have no current plans to move him off SS. He's seen time in CF as well and that appears to be the plan going forward for the time being. As for eta, you never know with young players but he's not Rule 5 eligible until 2026 aka they aren't under immediate pressure to Irish him. Complete guess would be late 1st half 2026 but we shall see

Scouts agree he should be more aggressive in the zone and he was in June. We'll see what happens but as of right now he's a consensus top 100 prospect with a lot going for him. Longenhagen called him an "impact up the middle prospect" back in May.

I was checking out McNeil's contract on Spotrac. Squirrel's signed through 2026, when he turns 34. The Mets have got a $15,750,000 club option on him for 2027. Jett's 19 now and turns 22 in 2026. Looks to be a nice potential transition if things follow suit and Squirrel gets moved to the OF for a year or two at the end in 2026/2027.
The former Met Davis was talking about the sense of instability he felt during his three and a half seasons in Queens, compared to his 11 months in the Giants organization. Davis sure came by that instability honestly. During the parts of four seasons he was with the Mets (2019-2022), he played for:
Five general managers (Brodie Van Wagenen, Jared Porter, Zack Scott, Sandy Alderson and Billy Eppler)
Three managers (Mickey Callaway, Luis Rojas and Buck Showalter; this excludes Carlos Beltrán)
Three hitting coaches (Chili Davis, Hugh Quattlebaum and Eric Chavez)
Three assistant hitting coaches (Tom Slater, Kevin Howard and Jeremy Barnes)
Four outfield coordinators (Rojas, Tony DeFrancesco, Tony Tarasco and Wayne Kirby)
Two infield coordinators (Gary DiSarcina and Joey Cora)
Two owners (Fred Wilpon, Steve Cohen)
That instability, Davis said, often filtered down to the clubhouse.
“If you feel a sense of urgency in the front office, as a player you feel like you’re going to be in survival mode,” he said, mentioning the drop in morale that accompanied Chili Davis’ firing early in the 2021 season. “There were so many moving parts.”
i think a lot of the struggling veterans knowing the young guys were on the way were in this survival mode from day 1 this year, as were some of the ones who tanked last year in september, and especially the guys who fit both categories like vogelbacktits.
buck and the fo were clearly not on the same page in addressing it, and were obviously unsuccessful.
in may the baby mets sparked things with big hits and i think in part because it looked like some clarity was emerging (despite the mets best efforts to continue confusing things with sanchez). the june swoon was a direct reflection of not committing and instead dragging out more guys in survival mode. they've finally won 2 games in a row, whoever doesn't positively contribute from now until the break needs to not survive past the break.
How J.D. Davis thriving elsewhere is partly the product of Mets’ instability - ( New Window )

“The best reference I can put on it,” J.D. Davis said from the visiting clubhouse at Citi Field on Sunday, “is when Deion Sanders walks into Colorado, he tells them, ‘You guys aren’t my guys.'”

Good stuff. Thanks for the article Eric. Just gave it a quick read. No wonder ex-Mets go elsewhere and thrive.

some of that was natural to expect with the ownership/management changes for a player like JDD. he was a hand me down from several regimes prior.
the problem more broadly is that shouldn't happen with guys the current regime targeted. vogelbach, naquin, ruf were just epically bad evaluations, both in the players coming in and players going out. last year's deadline failure cost them the division and their downward spiral carried over into this year both psychologically in the clubhouse and with their decision to try to justify the vogelbacktits trade.

Hartwig has been a really nice plus for the Mets. Lots to look forward to from that young'un. The rest of the season should be dedicated to making room for and playing kids, especially if the season continues to go south in the next month.

The Mets will pay the roughly $4M owed Flexen, the $600,000 owed Gott
he is throwing a cutter 10% more and throwing it 3 mph slower, so presumably that's turned into an effective weapon. at least for 3 months.
whatever happens from here doesnt matter, this is the type of move they need to make. hope they get lucky with someone like gott doing something well enough for a few months to bridge the gap.
flexen's numbers are obviously terrible but he's depth if you get that far down the chart.
if this team turns it around this year it will be because of steve cohen and his willingness to deficit spend on moves like this.
Eppler has no clue what he’s doing when it comes to pitching acquisition, development and overall strategy/program. He was abominable with pitching as GM of Angels.
are they dumping flexen or just putting him in cuse since nobody is going to claim him?
Quote:
Odd trade. Mets dumping Flexen. Gott isn’t worth 4+ million

2:01pm: The Mets are planning to designate Flexen for assignment themselves, Andy Martino of SNY reports (Twitter link). The trade effectively boils down to the Mets taking on Flexen’s salary as a means of lowering the cost to acquire Gott.

right but that's obvious based on the way flexen has pitched - no way do we want him appearing in the big leagues right now. if goes to cuse and starts pitching better maybe he's an option (unless he just doesn't go to cuse for some reason).
Sorry that’s from Will Sammon, I’m not the one confirming it lol
thank u that was what wasnt sure of. the way hes pitched flexen vs brigham is like asking which testicle to get kicked in. hopefully they keep adding so we can get to the optimal state of "neither".

his numbers in 9.1 innings w/ save situations also a lot better than the 19.2 innings in non-save situations.
looks like lefties are hitting .375 with a 1.000 ops against him but righties are half of that with a .215 ba and .515 ops.
history suggests the good is probably more flukey than anything else but if they had someone flukey in the last couple weeks they'd have a couple more wins.
