Rookie Tre Hawkins will start at cornerback in place of injured Adoree’ Jackson (concussion) today, per source. Hawkins entered the season as a starter in the nickel package, but the sixth-round pick lost that job after three games.
Nick McCloud got the start in place of Jackson last week. Wouldn’t be surprised if McCloud is still in the mix on early downs, but Hawkins is in line to get the majority of snaps opposite Deonte Banks. Chance for a young player to regain confidence.

He is better than McCloud. Let's see if Hawkins is part of the solution or if they need to target another CB early.

Giants-Commanders pregame thoughts:
• Hard to believe the Giants won a game here a year ago to essentially punch their ticket to the playoffs. Things have changed...
• I had little interest in last week’s game because it was obvious it would be a blowout. I’m actually much more interested in today’s game. This shouldn’t be a blowout. It will be alarming if the defense gets shredded again.
• The Commanders have a bad defense and they’ve traded top edge rushers Montez Sweat and Chase Young since the Giants’ 14-7 win in Week 7. The Commanders have allowed 37 completions of 20-plus yards, which is the fourth-most in the league. The Giants have just 22 completions of 20-plus yards, which is tied for 24th in the league. That continues a trend from last season when they ranked last with 28 completions of 20-plus yards.
This should be DeVito’s last chance unless he shows something. They could give Barkley the start next week and then hope to have Tyrod back after the bye.
• The Giants defense has been a disaster since the Jets collapse/Leonard Williams trade. They’ve given up 79 points in the past two games. That dominant three-game stretch feels like a long time ago. Need to see more against a mediocre Commanders offense.
• The Giants blitzed Howell relentlessly in Week 7. They had six of their 15 sacks in that game and held Washington to 1-of-15 on third down. But the Commanders found some answers in the second half and had two long drives late that didn’t result in points (blocked FG, turnover on downs). Howell has been on fire since that game, so it will be interesting to see if he handles the pressure better.
• The Giants have allowed 32 completions of 20-plus yards this season, which ranks 25th in the league. They allowed 48 completions of 20-plus yards last season, which tied for 12th.
Rookie corner Deonte Banks’ recent struggles started with his matchup against Washington’s Terry McLaurin (six catches, 90 yards). Adoree’ Jackson also missed that game, but Banks didn’t travel with McLaurin — they just matched up frequently. We’ll see if they change their approach to McLaurin, who only had one first-half target in the previous matchup. They likely won’t wait as long to feature their top receiver in the rematch.
• Gunner Olszewski was signed after the Giants muffed two punts in the first Washington game. Olszewski has performed well, but he’ll be tested by Commanders punter Tress Way, who can make returners look bad.
I recall going to the late season 2020 Giants at Redskins game, which was dubbed the Chase Young Bowl. Saquon ran for a thousand yards and we won. Days later there was an empty feeling--we had lost out on Chase Young. And settled for taking Andrew Thomas. So, we won double. The draft will always be a crap shoot.
Giants and the draft will take care of itself after the season. Too many games left to get worked up about it. * plus, you can GUATANTEE the Giants a drafting a QB in Rd 1, period. Jones has two neck injuries and now an ACL along with very questionable able play- they are drafting a QB..

What exactly would be the purpose of starting Matt Barkley for one game? Keep DeVito out there and let him grow. Matt Barkley is not going to be on this team moving forward. They need to see if DeVito can be a decent backup. Starting Barkley serves no purpose. They damn sure aren’t winning any games because of him, if that’s their master plan

Exactly. Barkley has no future here. And what little chance he would have is as a PS vet. The league has a good read on what he can do. Get DeVito as much experience as possible until Taylor comes back to see if he has a future.
because I generally think the concern about draft slot is bullshit. But this is going to be the franchise's most important draft since 2004. Thankfully I'm traveling to a wedding and will watch the game on DVR*
* Up through Joe Judge season 2, I would make sure to organize my travel plans around watching the Giants game live. But fuck this iteration of the Giants, they don't deserve it.
of their own, 27-10. This team is non competitive. Going to find a lot out about the defense today and the pass rush without Leo out there, because that line is bad (almost as bad as ours) and our DL should dominate.
DeVito has been improving and Washington's D has underperformed all year, and now they've lost two of their big guns. The Giants ought to be able to put up a couple of TD's even if they stick to a running and short pass game. The Giant's Defense on the other hand is at least competent when they're not playing the likes of Dallas and should be able to hold them to FG's
are open before throwing it so not to turn the ball over. It seems like the Giants will play it close to the vest again. I thought they’d let it fly today and maybe they will, but I think Daboll doesn’t want to get blown out again.
Neither guard is worth a damn and JMS is having his rookie struggles.
There’s just a LOT that Schoen has to do.
This roster (even without all the injuries) is still pretty bad

Saw same. Guards need to be better. Maybe a move by Neal inside could be in the cards?! Either way, they need help inside also. Pressure up the gut doesn’t allow the QB to step up.
is Kafka doing? He's just putting DeVito in third and long. Better to use Barkley as a decoy. And because of those first two plays we go three and out.

Horrible gameplan like usual. Why would any team not try to force the Giants to pass? So pass the fucking ball.
back to its unimaginative self. This is the poorest excuse for offensive coaching I have ever seen, and as a long-time Giants fan, I've seen lousy coaching.

Short passing game needs to be employed, setting up runs. It’s too obvious running Barkley at this point. We know, given a rookie UDFA QB, that they’ll run on first.

Kafka is coaching-impaired. Daboll is, too, or he'd find someone who can design and call plays.
to use his hands much better. He’s not just speed around the corner at this point. There’s a lot of good young talent, especially on defense.
The QB and OL are the big problems on this team.
is on Kafka. Passing plays that require deep drops and predictable runs by Barkley. Kafka has to realize that DeVito is likely to hold the ball too long on many plays because of his inexperience, so have him do one or two reads and then throw the ball away. Roll him out. Use Barkley on screens. Throw slants. What he's doing now is idiotic.
are we on track to give up the most sacks ever in a season?

The number one criteria for a successful NFL quarterback in today's NFL is quick decision making.
DeVito is on the extreme end because he really has no place being on the field. But Daniel Jones is much closer to DeVito in this area than he is to good quarterbacks.
really bad … but there is no cohesion on that OL and for that you look to coaching. BobbyJohnson needs to be the first one fired at the end of the season,

too long or your OL can’t block for more than 1.5 sec then you have to call plays
to GET THE DAMN THING OUT OF HIS HANDS (what part of that doesn’t Kafka get???).
I would fire his ass right away.

+1. Also, I'd add WR to that list as well as another Edge (to replace Ojulari) and DT to help Lawrence.

When they get back to the game some scrub on special teams named "Ed Bulb" should be swinging his fists or helmet at the refs, if they're not going to call that.
there’s no way, even with injuries, the back ups look ill prepared and there’s NO development at all. I blame many of the problems this Oline has on him. That said, there needs to be more talent added and we’ve got to do a better job of scouting Oline.

It absolute is, unless of course you are blind. We actually have the occasional decent pass pro and the sacks are a function of holding onto the ball. Those first 4 of those games were historically bad

Is it just me or does DeVito look more comfortable?
who’s making that play call?! WTF .....seemed like a long developing play. Why was he holding the ball? Call a quick slant or something that gets the ball out quick. Only need 2 freaking yards!
is under a lot of pressure and also isn't seeing open receivers on some plays. The answer is to throw quickly. One or two reads and then throw it away. Asking him to do more right now is unrealistic. Kafka should know that.
The data and the game reviews show over and over the "no one is ever open" stuff for the Giants is ridiculous.
If there is one thing Kafka excels at, it's scheming targets open. That the quarterbacks he's had to work with can't make a decision in the requisite amount of time, is not on him.
that how the Giants play against teams “in their weight class” would tell us a lot.
Washington is in their “class” and they are competing well.
That’s a good sign.

Yea, Kafka is calling an offensive game plan for an experienced QB and even that is a stretch with this Oline. Kafka just doesn’t seem to be able to adapt very well?!

A game plan for an experienced QB would be one with lots of quick throws, where the QB has to make an immediate read and a quick throw. Do that with an inexperienced QB and you'll get a pick because the inexperienced guy makes a bad read or doesn't see a defender.
play. Finally some imagination. I would have bet anything that Kafka was going to run Barkley into the LOS on that third and one. Nice shimmy by Slayton as well on Fuller to get in for the TD.
But not the mighty DeVito!! Perfect execution, right?
LOL
If Daniel Jones threw that pass, you be talking about it 5 years from now.
Slayton was wide open by NFL standards. All you want in that situation from the QB is a nice cupcake throw that is easy to catch. Even if the receiver doesn't score you have the first down around their 10 yard line.

Has already earned right to start after the bye. As long as he doesn’t poop himself next Sunday or throw oodles of picks.
Most impressive thing to me about Devito is that he hasn't turned the ball over, even under extreme pressure he protects the football. I'm sure this will jinx him though.

okay but we cannot praise that and then have people screaming at him to chuck the ball away when he is under pressure.
Williams/Maye/Daniels/Nix/Penix Jr are all NFL QBs. McCarthy and Ward are too, even if they are day 2 picks.
This might be the most delusional BBI take I’ve ever seen. I’d be willing to wager that the majority of those guys aren’t starters or backups in 7 seasons they are drafted

Yeah but no one cares if Penix is Brandon Weeden with a worse injury history and Nix is JP Losman. That is obviously not what anyone means by "NFL QB".
RE: RE: RE: RE: 6 sacks and we have a whole half to go
stupid. Not a freaking clue to get the ball out quickly....geezus
If you're going to call a guy stupid it might give you some credibility if actually typed his name correctly. Not to mention he's 14-19 for 189 yards and 2 TDs with no turnovers. As a third stringer.
The “Jones Contract” hate comments are tired. With it basically being only a 2 year contract, it was the right move. He will likely be gone after next season.
excuse for processing slowly. He needs more experience.
He’s clearly improving. He has a LOT farther to go yet. But he has traits that are worth developing.
After 4 plus years, what’s Jones excuse? He still processes slowly and misses receivers.
In the modern era, when the quality of QB talent and play, league wide, was this poor?
When you look at the 32 starting QBs in the league, one could argue that HALF of them suck. So, the number of humans on the planet who can play the position is more than rare.
This is why you MUST have other pieces in place to succeed. If you dont have one of the top QBs or if your guy gets hurt... then you are done.
In the modern era, when the quality of QB talent and play, league wide, was this poor?
Talked about this with buddies over the weekend. It’s atrocious.
QB play was a lot different in the 70s and 80s, but in this era where so many rules are skewed towards protecting the QB and allowing fast pace offense, it’s amazing how bad it is
As for our boy Tommy D, he’s doing what Daniel Jones lost the ability to do this year. Sack up despite getting swarmed by the rush and fire some lasers downfield
DeVito has to throw the ball on time, and Shepherd has to make a catch that hits him in the hands. If you want to criticize the coaches, the questionable decisions are 1) why is shepherd on this roster? And 2) why is sterling shepherd in the game.
for taking most QB sacks and still winning the game?
Here ya go
Quote:
The last time a quarterback got sacked 10 times in a game was in 2018, when Matthew Stafford was taken down 10 times. The NFL record is 12 sacks in a game, a record shared by Donovan McNabb, Warren Moon and Bert Jones.
RE: With this kind of pressure, how come no screens, draws, or roll outs
Lets see what happens next week. The top pick is gone as well as the 2nd. But kudos to the local kid. He's living his dream. And you really, really, really cant be upset with a Giant win.
I’d prefer these coaches clearly show they’re the answer by turning around their play, even if they won’t make the Playoffs. I see no reason why Daboll should get blown out every week.

Yeh seriously. This team is 2-15 it’s clear this regime, fo or HC ain’t it.
There’s no guarantees in the draft. Jayden Daniels would be a nice QB to have too and so I couldn’t care if we didn’t get Williams or Maye.
If the Giants win this and against the Pats, they would drop into the 13 range. Only one 4-win team has a stronger SOS than the Giants. Say goodbye to Williams, Maye, and Daniels, or trade most of this year's top picks and next year's number one to get one of them. Then try to fix the O line, and get a pass rusher, and a true No. 1 receiver. How many of you will feel good about these extra 2 wins then?
gtfo with your “I’m smarter than everyone bullshit.”
Unfortunately, I am most likely smarter than everyone here, as well as having the unique differentiation of actually playing QB.
BBI is clueless how bad this team is, and not just the QB. In fact they can’t even recognize this is arguably the best pass pro all year, but the QB has taken a record amount of sacks. True black white thinking, which isn’t atypical in America
No Bengals fans reminisce about a meaningless November win
not being able to truck that DB for a TD? He's got arms the size of tree trunks, and he dippy-danced towards the sidelines and let the guy tackle him at the knees.
I don’t get it! It’s like we always go into the Dallas and Eagles games expecting to lose. What I would give to beat those two teams at least once a year!
(Schoen and Daboll) haw to show they are the right guys.
The draft will take care of itself. If we have the right guys, then they will get this team to where we the fans, want them to be

RE: I said we are about to find out a lot about the defense today
team cant even lose properly. fucking joke. we will be shit forever at this rate.
we just need to pick the right players. where we've been drafting, had we picked the right players in the last 6 years, we'd have great talent. it's ok if we win and drop a few spots. talent evaluation trumps draft position.
You can play this game all day. How many Panthers fans are celebrating their losses from last year?
Bryce Young isn’t Caleb or Drake.
Maybe not... Fair enough but that is only hindsight. People thought he has that kind of potential coming into the draft. And it is unlikely that either Williams or Maye will be as good as Stroud.
Giants fans! We have six more freaking games and how many do you think they are actually gonna win the rest of the way? Some fans here need to take an Ativan.

It's short term vs long term thinking stuff. Fans rationalize wins in a lost season as 'player development', but if that's the case the Giants roster wouldn't be so bad since all they've done in collect wins in lost seasons.

To be happy when we have the same qb next year and are 5-12 or 6-11. Don’t want to hear any bitching and moaning about not having a good qb
I'm with you. The thing is this: I didn't think the Giants were gonna lose these last 7 games of the season.
Today was a perfect storm: the Giants have Washington's number like the Eagles have the Giants'; Howell sucks; the Deadskins' coahcing staff sucks too (specifically Rivera and Bieniemy); and the Giants' defense came to play.
Lol. But they could lose that one even. Can't root for a loss. Sorry!
Not many teams are as bad as Non Eagle playing Washington. Plenty o losses to come.
Enjoy the win folks.
Unfortunately, the Pats are worse than the Non Eagle playing Washington. And the game is at home.
could be franchise altering. Harrison Jr is just OBJ pt 2. Go Washington!
Harrison Jr is closer to Megatron than OBJ imo.
We don’t have an Eli Manning or even a Matt Stafford.
Say goodbye to Harrison, too. They are down to 5th (Bears got beat at the end) and will likely be favored at home against the Pats. Four wins would probably mean 9 to 12 range. Or say goodbye to three draft picks this year and their first next year. Like Carolina did.
I don't think we're likely to see another one this year.
I agree. I think the Patriots day will stuff our pathetic offense..
Agreed. I do think the Giants will keep it close against them. Belichick is definitely not Rivera and Mac Jones, as much as I don't like him, is better than Puny Howell.
I hope the Giants don't win another game this year for draft purposes (one of the QBs), but it wouldn't surprise me to them win another. The Rams game at home is one. The Packers at home in three weeks, coming off of the bye, is another. Another win would be good for morale too of course so these guys don't go into the offseason having lost their last 6 in a row. We will see what happens.
And Commanders.
@DDuggan21
Need Houston in my suicide pool..

He is better than McCloud. Let's see if Hawkins is part of the solution or if they need to target another CB early.
but if they happen to play well against the Commanders and nobly lose, I will not complain.
In any event, I don't want to see the energy sucked out of this team by the start of the 2nd quarter.
Thanks for sharing k2tampa. I saw your post on the other thread about the SoS tiebreakers and rooting interests. Good stuff!
That is the smart approach.
@DDuggan21
• Prediction: Commanders 16, Giants 9.
I would much rather save a boat load of money and stay home and watch my quad box of real NFL teams play real football.
I really don't understand why any Giants fan would waste time and money going.

If you're not too tied up in the result, the buzz of gameday is fun.

Exactly. Barkley has no future here. And what little chance he would have is as a PS vet. The league has a good read on what he can do. Get DeVito as much experience as possible until Taylor comes back to see if he has a future.

I thought he ws pretty good in the regular season games they played. Perhaps DJ Davidson has a bigger upside they need to see and let grow?
Giants 9
Maybe the OL coach hates him?
Foreskins 21 Jints 10
DeVito has been improving and Washington's D has underperformed all year, and now they've lost two of their big guns. The Giants ought to be able to put up a couple of TD's even if they stick to a running and short pass game. The Giant's Defense on the other hand is at least competent when they're not playing the likes of Dallas and should be able to hold them to FG's
Giants 9
I see more points for Washington. Maybe a lot more.
Great catch by Barkley.
-Everyone, 2012-present
Great catch by Barkley.
I said the same thing, just way too predictable
There’s just a LOT that Schoen has to do.
This roster (even without all the injuries) is still pretty bad
Whether this is all on him or not, my guess is he will not be retained by Daboll.
Precisely.
might want to get him some reps at WR

Saw same. Guards need to be better. Maybe a move by Neal inside could be in the cards?! Either way, they need help inside also. Pressure up the gut doesn’t allow the QB to step up.
That was a hell of an INT!!

I’ve said all along that Bredeson is a better C than G … not better than JMS, but he’s very inconsistent at G
It is the same thing every year with this OL.
Any elite QB would t function behind us . Were the absolute worst.

Brought to you by the worst fucked-up O-line in the NFL.
Horrible gameplan like usual. Why would any team not try to force the Giants to pass? So pass the fucking ball.
Short passing game needs to be employed, setting up runs. It’s too obvious running Barkley at this point. We know, given a rookie UDFA QB, that they’ll run on first.
Quote:
is Kafka doing? He's just putting DeVito in third and long. Better to use Barkley as a decoy. And because of those first two plays we go three and out.

Pathetic

weird take...Evan...is that you?
Yup.
we're still trying to figure out how that works - signed the Giants front office

Great catch.
Great T.D.
And on the key plays of this drive, the pass protection was really good.
Good for Tommy.
opening up that playbook
So, we’re going Marvin Harrison in first round? LOL
He just needs to learn how to throw it away
yes it was
Their defense vacillates between bad and overrated. But if they plan on turning the football over every possession, they’re going to lose

he is being coached to protect the ball.
TD isn’t helping his line at all. What a nightmare of an offensive team. And I agree Pugh isn’t helping us at all. He’s playing awful.

No we don’t. I will always want them to win. This is not just a 3 QB draft.
It's rare to have one qb in a draft much less four. There aren't 4 nfl QBs in this draft.
Probably true.

Comparing a completely and utterly meaningless game to a playoff game is a bit silly.

This referee is terrible. Can’t hear a word he says
exactly. pushing Howell out of bounds shouldn't be a penalty. It's not the defenders fault he lands on his back.

No the flag was actually for a late hit after the “touchdown”.
Then the Giant retaliated
I've got to see a clip of him running, lmao!
Flott and Samuel
I think Flott and Samuel?!

I thought that was the penalty, but it wasn’t. It was the late hit in the back by the WASH player.

She threw the original flag way early. Completely dropped the ball there

If Daniel Jones threw that pass, you be talking about it 5 years from now.
Nah, but keep hanging from DeVito’s nuts. It’s a good look for you.
Looking forward to drafting the next QB you’ll continually piss and moan about.
I'll probably just hang on his nuts.

Impressive.

Yeah it looked like she threw the first flag for the push on Howell, which was a clean play. Everything after that was due to the skirmish.
good luck...i'd expect washington to not sell out so hard aginst the run in the second half.
hopefully Daboll can outcoach Rivera

If you're going to call a guy stupid it might give you some credibility if actually typed his name correctly. Not to mention he's 14-19 for 189 yards and 2 TDs with no turnovers. As a third stringer.

Sure. My point is no matter how slow Devito is, it doesn't compare to how slow Jones is.
Looks to be ok but damn what a hit
How? As I missed the first half.
How? As I missed the first half.
Big plays passing overcame it and WSH has two turnovers.
He’s clearly improving. He has a LOT farther to go yet. But he has traits that are worth developing.
After 4 plus years, what’s Jones excuse? He still processes slowly and misses receivers.
How? As I missed the first half.
We got two turnovers, and should have had a third, except Pinnock dropped an INT anyone on BBI could have caught.
How? As I missed the first half.
The "great" Saquon Barkley.
How? As I missed the first half.
All the sacks aren't bad OL play. DeVito is looking deep and holding the ball.
He has not turned the ball over. He is showing grit and I appreciate that.
Throw the fucking ball away.
Throw the fucking ball away.
AND another
DeVito holds the ball too long.
Kafka calls too many pass plays with deep drops.
Come out running and we put up 3 and it puts us up nearly two scores up essentially (which is what 8 is)

totally normal to hate someone for injuries that are out of their control
Should be a good cheap back up QB going forward.
I also feel like the players really like playing for him. That makes a difference.

He has been the best offensive player on the team for quite some time. I just don’t understand the hate for him..
Because he hasn't won anything and constantly misses games with injuries?
totally normal to hate someone for injuries that are out of their control
No one hates him. But when you are drafted where he is, there is a huge expectation to actually be available to...you know...play?
your fucking retarded. you cannot control injuries, thats not on him. The guy has more heart in the tip of his dick than you have in your entire body
It is on him when he misses games EVERY year outside of his rookie year.
And it's "you're" not your. Who's the retard now, retard?

Lol. It's the same fucking line... he's been sacked 8 times today... Great protection lol
we just need to pick the right players. where we've been drafting, had we picked the right players in the last 6 years, we'd have great talent. it's ok if we win and drop a few spots. talent evaluation trumps draft position.

You are such a fucking cunt.

I’m proud of the effort. The result is going to fuck us though.
I’ll be fine with it. This teams needs a big one no matter who QB is next 3-5 yrs.
At least 1 positive of this season
The draft will take care of itself. If we have the right guys, then they will get this team to where we the fans, want them to be

It's short term vs long term thinking stuff. Fans rationalize wins in a lost season as 'player development', but if that's the case the Giants roster wouldn't be so bad since all they've done in collect wins in lost seasons.
WHOEVER is the QB, you don’t think that will change the offense?
This, if Jones wasn't a running threat, he'd be a backup if not out of the league.
It’s only his 2nd season

we can’t enjoy a potential win! You’d always want to see your team play well, no? I understand the need to better position yourself in the draft in a lost season, but I personally enjoy seeing the team play competitively and individual players develop.

Jones sucks.
Incredibly so! Very obvious penalties not called
The Giants will likely PUP Jones for the maximum, and go with the rookie and DeVito next year to start.

A loss here drops them to at least 5th.

Say goodbye to Harrison, too. They are down to 5th (Bears got beat at the end) and will likely be favored at home against the Pats. Four wins would probably mean 9 to 12 range. Or say goodbye to three draft picks this year and their first next year. Like Carolina did.

We will see what happens.
agree and we all thought they were going to win 8 games this year. they were playing below their mean all year
