FYI...

New York Giants 31 – Washington Commanders 19 - ( New Window )
That didn't feel like

404 yds of offense by Washington. Also didn't seem like only 13 first downs for the Giants. Those two stats normally will get you killed. 6 turnovers does help...

174 in the ground! That's not good. If not for the 6 turnovers, it would have been far worse. They gave to shore up the run D.

I will say, one thing

that I didn't like was Daboll's getting very conservative on our last scoring drive. Barkley ripped off a nice run setting us up deep. Yes, you are trying to burn clock but, we are 2-8 and had Washington reeling. A play action pass or run pass option could have netted us at least another first down and possibly a TD that would have sealed the game.

He has made some questionable "gut" choices and has erred in some badly- Jets game comes to mind. This one could have bitten us (game wise- not bad draft wise) as he left the door open for a late TD to beat us.

*yesterday there was a debate that Jones would have had a bunch of TD passes against this team etc and that lessens what Devitto did. Others argued look at the fact that Devitto did this with way less experience, less physical talent and without the benefit of Waller playing, Neal etc.

First nothing can be proven by changing the lineup or inserting this guy into an equation they were not present for as everything changes.. BUT, I will say Eric made a solid argument yesterday as to why there is SIGNIFICANCE to his performance.

1) Devitto is an UDFA and yet over the span of 2 total games played he has 6 TD passes and 1 rushing TD. Even when Jones played a whole game we got less production- with a more experienced QB in the NFL and in the this system and with Waller on the field.

2) Devitto took a beating, some because of his own play- ie not sure what to do, not willing to risk a mistake BUT, we have seen the same mindset from our starting QB and his lessening of "making mistakes" still led to mistakes and led to very ugly play. That is far more disheartening to a team than it is when a guy who is an UDFA QB, is learning on the fly. He showed he certainly can keep himself in a game and not put the team in a BAD turnover situation.

3) Our TD production is actually up, even if some is in garbage time.

Devitto has 6 TD passes this season and leads the team there. He threw three yesterday and honestly anyone saying Jones would have thrown three easily is not really paying attention. I am not bashing Jones, I have actually been a bit of a supporter but, this year, when faced with adversity he showed he just doesn't have that IT piece to overcome it the situation. Plus, he still does not seem like a natural passing QB- that some of it is MECHANICAL in nature.

Take a look at last year:

@ Tenn- 17-21 188 2 TD's 1 Int (bad redzone int)
vs Car- 22-34 176 1 TD
vs Dal- 20-37 196 0 TD
vs Chi- 8-13 71 0 (gets injured in 3rd quarter)
@ GB- 21-27 217 0 TD
vs Balt- 19-27 173 2 TD
@ Jax- 19-30 202 1 TD
@ Sea- 17-31 176 0 TD
vs Hou- 13-17 197 2 TD
vs Det- 27-44 341 1 TD 2 Int
@ Dal- 21-35 228 1 TD
vs Was- 25-31 200 1 TD (game ends in a tie)
vs Phil- 18-27 169 1 TD (we are blown out)
@ Was- 21-32 160 0 TD
@ Minn- 30-42 334 1 TD 1 Int
vs Ind- 19-24 177 2 TD (2 rushing TDs and almost 100yds)
@ Phil- 0 - 0 0

Last year Jones had 15 TD passes. 15 for the whole season. Devitto has 6 already in 2 games. Is it safe to assume that Devitto, facing a similar schedule of games could throw at least 15 TD passes over 16 games (Jones didn't play in the last game)? I would say the answer is yes there. And that is where the rub lies. The Giants passing game truly has been AVERAGE even in terms of a game manager. Do I like Jones, sure, he seems like a great guy and hard worker. Is he a bigger QB and maybe better athlete than Devitto? Absolutely! Have the results, as small a sample size as they, shown Jones to be far superior to Devitto? The answer is NO.

We played teams who finished in the top of draft, 4 times last year. We won all 4 games. We won those 4 games by a combined 47 points. BUT, 28 of those came against the Colts led by Jeff Saturday!!

Jones threw 5 of his 15 TD passes against those 4 bad teams. 1/3 of his TD passes.. Jones threw 4 total TD's in the games we lost last year (that he played in) and 4 of his 5 total Ints were in those same games. *so what do you take from that? Well, Jones isn't producing TD's and when he did throw ints they were in games we lost. But the small number of both also means we game planned to keep the risks to a minimum. It is becoming far more obvious that last year was way more the system working with Jones- maximizing his running and solid short game and minimizing the risks.

So back to Eric's point yesterday, what is it about this offense that Devitto can't do the same as Jones, if not better when it comes to producing TD's? Is Devitto the answer to our QB situation- long-term nobody knows but his play and the TD passes he has thrown show he can produce at the same level as our current franchise QB can if not better..

I know level of competition will come up but, Jones didn't play great against lesser comp last year either. Look at the numbers above. We beat the dregs last year and he still managed just 15td passes. His running helped a LOT but it actually masked our true weakness- we were not able to score points through the air. I think Devitto can score points through the air, the more comfortable he becomes and the better the system can be used and played out. Does that change my mind about 2024 and the draft-no, not really. But, I am very curious to see if we have a Brock Purdy possibility here. At the very least if he is a solid backup we just saved a LOT of money for the next few years or even get a tarde chip in our back pocket later on.

The last play of the game, after the Simmmons Pick-6, the Giants allowed something like a 30-yard garbage run that ended the game.
