NFT: NHL - at the halfway point

pjcas18 : 1/16/2024 10:11 am
Every team (except OTT and EDM) has reached our passed the 41 game halfway point, so thought let's take some stock in how things look vs what we expected and look at 1st half performances.

First the playoff standings (GD = goal differential):
East
Atlantic:
BOS 43GP 61PTs +30 GD
FLA 43 GP 57PTs +25 GD
TOR 41 GP 50PTs +14 GD

Metro:
NYR 42 GP 56PTs +17 GD
PHI 44 GP 54PTs +10 GD
CAR 43 GP 53PTs +16 GD

East Wild Card
DET 43 GP 49PTs +11 GD
TBL 44 GP 49PTs -3 GD
PIT 42 GP 48PTs +16 GD
NYI 43 GP 48PTs -18GD
NJD 41 GP 47PTs -2GD
WAS 41 GP 46PTs -26GD

West
Central
WIN 42 GP 60PTs +42GD
COL 44 GP 59PTs +26GD
DAL 42 GP 55PTs +26GD

Pacific
VAN 44 GP 62PTs +54GD
LVG 44 GP 55PTs +20GD
LAK 40 GP 50PTs +30GD

West Wild Card
NSH 44 GP 49PTs +1GD
EDM 39 GP 47PTs +21GD
SEA 43 GP 47PTs -3GD
CAL 43 GP 45PTs -1GD
ARI 41 GP 44PTs +3GD
STL 42 GP 44PTs -15GD

not much really that unexpected. but from a standings standpoint I say this:
VAN (positive)
PHI (positive)
ARI (positive)
DET (positive)
MIN (WTF?)
OTT (has a bunch of games in hand on everyone, but I expected more)
BUF (let's me down every year)

Awards:
Calder: Bedard, but being out 4-6 weeks it's in jeopardy. Luke Hughes, Brock Faber, Rossi, Adam Fantilli, and more nipping at his heels

Vezina: Demko or Hellebuyck
Selke: Barkov or Danault
Hart: MacKinnon or Panarin
Norris: Quinn Hughes (has a case for Hart too), Makar not far behind though
Jack Adams: Tocchet or Torts

should be a fun second half
Just noticed

LAK have not yet reached halfway.

I guess you could call them a disappointment after their dominant start. It's like them and EDM swapped roles.
Very disappointed with the Islanders

their record should be much better than what it is.
After the last two games I feel like they are on the brink of collapse.

I feel like they've been on the brink of collapse most of the season. I truly can't find one legitimate reason why the coach is still employed by the team.

This is what happens when you have a veteran team and lock everyone up long term - you get complacency like we saw last night.

This team is locked in to being mediocre for the next several years. This isn't 1992 anymore. It's time to start an honest rebuild without Lou. We don't need anymore 30 somethings who "play the right way."

Dobson, Barzal and Sorokin are the nucleus of this club and its future. Horvat, Nelson, and Pelech are good pieces. Everyone else is completely fungible in a rebuild (which will be hard with the contracts Lou handed out).
Very

curious to see where NJD end up once they actually are able to ice anything remotely close to their whole team.

Then again, if they don't add a goaltender it might not matter.
I also have to begrudgingly admit
pjcas18 : 1/16/2024 10:32 am : link
BOS is a surprise.

I did not expect losing Bergeron, Krejci, Clifton, Bertuzzi, etc. would go so smoothly.

Montgomery is either a really good coach or Swayman/Ullmark cover up a lot.

McAvoy, always a favorite of mine (and a Giants fan) will never get Norris credit but there are really not many btter complete defenseman in the league.

Encouraging sign is the play of Daws. He has looked very solid. Hate to say this is a throwaway year but the injuries are near insurmountable right now.

To their credit they have played well given the circumstances. Stealing 2 points against Florida was great.

Next week is monumental and could really wreck the season. Dallas - Vegas - Carolina - Tampa is a tough stretch.

Don't make any rash moves imo. Aside from adding a depth defenseman, ride it out. Also not sure why Lindy hates Holtz but the constant benching of him is tiresome.
To me
pjcas18 : 1/16/2024 10:52 am : link
the Devils are a team that just needs to be healthy in the playoffs. Make it obviously, but be healthy.

if Daws is the answer in net great, if not they need to get one, but they just need to get their full lineup back and once they get in the playoffs they can do damage.

they are a "win now" team.

They are just so godamn well coached and positionally sound. They are never out of position. Ever. Also obviously they have excellent goaltending. Outside of Pasta they don't have that type of top end talent that scares you at all but he is great though. Marchant is definitely showing his age a bit. They kind of remind me of the 90's early 2000's Devils teams. Strong positionally especially on the back end and in net and the fwds play their roles great. I wouldn't be shocked to see them take a run at a top 6 fwd at the deadline. Kane would have been a good fit there.
Looked
pjcas18 : 1/16/2024 11:18 am : link
like Kane left the game injured last night.

I do expect the Red Wings fade from contention and move Kane, but not if he's not healthy. He's looked fantastic so far this year.
I feel like Fitzgerald is in a tough spot with the devils
BH28 : 1/16/2024 11:25 am : link
While they aren't the most injured team, injuries have played a factor, they've lost their top defensive pairing. The irony is the injuries are what forced Ruff to play Nemec. Also the team doesn't look the same without Hughes in the line-up which shows how important he is, but at the same time is concerning. Meier was coming on before he hit IR.

As PJ mentioned, it feels they just need to get healthy, but can you sit on your hands waiting for the team to get healthy? Or do you need to make a move for a defensman or at goalie?

They have about two months to evaluate Daws and decide if it's time to make a move.

The Metro is tight, seven teams within 10 points, 4 within 2 points. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if they miss the playoffs outright or are able to pull it all together second half of the year.
Canes
Scott in Montreal : 1/16/2024 11:29 am : link
Same old story for the Canes. Suspect goaltending. Andersen is done. PK and Raanta are not enough to carry this team.

While it was better in December and so far in January. The team needs a real veteran #1 in order to take the next step. Their unwillingness or inability to pull the trigger to get the goalie is a major hindrance. Especially with Rod's system that leaves the goalies exposed a fair amount of the time.

The scoring is going well for now but there will be some dry times and that makes a shutdown goalie who can steal some games even more important. Especially during the playoffs.
MTL has basically
pjcas18 : 1/16/2024 11:30 am : link
all but made it clear that Sean Monahan and David Savard will be moved.

I think Brendan Gallagher could be shopped and maybe Josh Anderson too (currently injured) and Joel Armia, but I think they are trying to clear space for the younger guys.

Jayden Struble has been such a surprise Arber Xhekaj is stuck in Laval while rehabbing. But Xhekaj is a top 4 D in MTL. They also have Mailloux who looks good. Just a young D corps. I could see them shop Kovacevic too.

I expect the trade market to pick up in the next two weeks.,

even though there are still 6+ weeks until the deadline.

Yes, get in would be great but their window is JUST opening.

Hughes is 22.
Their best two blueliners are 20 and 19.
Majority of the team is 26 and below.

If they ever land a good goalie and make an add to bolster defense they have a chance to be good for a long time.

I too, am encouraged by the play of Daws. He is playing really well and considering all of the injuries this season, the devs have weather the storm.

Really hoping we can get some guys back sooner than later.

The reports here also have Jake Allen and or Cayden Primeau also being shopped around.

At one point in late October when Andersen went on IR there was talk about Jake Allen to the Canes for a pick and Tony DeAngelo

They are a fairly young team too, but they do need goal tending. Vanecek absolutely sucks. Broduer spoiled Devil fans!

They arrived a year early and it kicked up expectations this year but you're right which is why I don't want them to trade someone like Seamus Casey for a goalie this year. Aside from depth just let the season play out at this point. The nucleus is still incredibly young. Frustrating you may miss the playoffs but the injuries have been brutal.

I gotta push back on this. Hamilton tore his pec and he made the PP go. Big loss. Meier has missed significant time and has been injured when playing. Hughes hasn't been the same player since he got hurt earlier in the year and now he's out for weeks. Nico was banged up earlier this year. Palat is hurt, Siegenthaler has a broken foot and is out for an extended period of time.

The injuries have been significant. They're just trying to survive at this point.

It's tough becasue from an actual man-games lost to injury, the devils aren't in the top 10 if I recall. But the injuries have been to the top line talent. The devils are more young then thin (depth wise), and people haven't been able to step up, IMO which makes the inuries have a larger impact. That's why I think it's a tricky situtation of trying to get healthy vs making moves.

If Habs unloaded Anderson, Savard, and Monahan, your whole team would practically be smurfs. Some Habs Digest dude on YouTube even says Habs are receiving calls for Xhekaj. If your smart people think small wins, they are dumb and disillusioned and apparently don’t watch playoff hockey.

They should get calls for Xhekaj is if he's in Laval.

But Slafkovsky is the opposite of a smurf. He's a monster.

and they get Dach back hopefully next year and he's big too (6'4).

the rest of the forwards are mostly average except Caufield and Gally.

Their D is not small at all Guhle, Barron, Mattheson, Struble, all 6'2 or taller. If Lane Hutson ever makes the team it would be like Caufield on D.

Monahan is just not a long-term fit on the team they won't be a contender in his prime.

Anderson, not as good a player as Monahan, I'd need to be convinced to trade because he has term. I'd love to unload Gallagher, I'm afraid the one time heart and soul of the team will be bought out in the next couple years if they don't move him.

I agree Fitz is in a tough spot for this season
Stu11 : 1/16/2024 5:20 pm : link
Right now about 35 mill of the Devs cap is injured. Of course with the secretiveness of reporting, only they know how serious outside of Dougie and Siegenthaler. A number of people on Devils Twitter seem to wanna stay out and call this season a lost cause. I think that's silly. Maybe if they were 6-8 points back I'd say it's getting to be a tall task, but they are right there for a playoff spot with games in hand on most of the teams. They do have a tougher 2nd half sched than the 1st half. Who knows it will be tough, but I do think with Smith apparently going down yesterday now they are hurting on the back line. Fitz should deal for a good veteran D with size. PJ you think the Habs really would deal X? I like his game a lot. Hopefully Daws gets a run in the crease. He has been solid. I guess it all depends how fast Timo, Jack, Palat and Siegs can get back.
I don't want them to trade wifi
pjcas18 : 1/16/2024 6:25 pm : link
but right now he's in Laval and he's healthy.

he's there because they have to play Savard.

Matheson is their #1 D and Guhle is a future #1 D.

Harris, Barron and Struble all project to top 4 D potential and all are 23 or under.

Kovacevic is probably being shopped.

They told Arber basically "clean up some D-zone stuff and you're back up in our top 4" but IMO they're show casing Savard and maybe even Kovacevic.

Shit, I wouldn't even be shocked if they trade Matheson.

Matheson is the best skating D I've seen in a Habs uniform since Larry Robinson, he's like Phil Housley back there but he reminds me of Jonathan Drouin, but as a D. So much skill, so little IQ.

One or two of Savard, Kovacevic or Matheson should be traded.

I don't think Daws
pjcas18 : 1/18/2024 7:47 am : link
played badly last night though he needs better rebound control (who doesn't?). Nemec showed some youth and Slfakovsky continued to build on what could be a breakout season. Montembeault also showing he could be one of those late bloomers can be a starting goalie at this level.

Devils need Jack Hughes back.

Habs deserved the win they played better. Daws was fine but he has to control that shot it was right in his glove. Interesting dynamic going on suddenly between The Record's beat writer Ryan Novozinsky and Lindy. Novo is very responsive to the Devils fans on twitter and has really latched on to the why is Holtz being buried issue questioning Lindy about it constantly the past 10 days or so. Well it came to a head last night in the post game presser where he asked him shy Holtz only got 8 mostly 4th line minutes(benched most of the 3rd period) in a game where he got the tying goal. Lindy basically told Novo he doesn't know what he is watching and then went on a bizarre extended rant obsessing on one pass Holtz carelelssly threw back towards the middle. It was very Tortz-Larry Brooks esque.
Link - ( New Window )
well some fan with a Devils discord seemed to find the play
Stu11 : 1/18/2024 8:27 am : link
that Lindy was talking about and posted it. Lol The Devils literally do this play a million times a game and it was hardly some agregious play and led to a shot but hardly a high danger chance and frankly Bahl mis-played the short little pass more so than it being a bad play.
Link - ( New Window )
It's why I think
pjcas18 : 1/18/2024 8:30 am : link
a coach like MSL is perfect for the Habs in their current state.

Slafkovsky had a history (still does it sometimes) of blind cross ice passes. D-zone, o-zone anywhere and they were crucial sometimes. But he didn't bench Slafkovsky or send him to Laval, he moved him up to play with linemates who can keep up with him in Suzuki and Caufield. MSL recognized Slafkovsky wasn't simply being careless (which he was) but he was also being creative and for that you need linemates who can match you. Since then Slafkovsky looks like a different player.

kind of like how Lafreniere does in NY playing with Panarin and Trocheck.

Also it highlights why coaches like Ruff may not be great for young players who aren't "finished products" (the Hughes brothers are obviously unique). They don't coach. not the way a Sully or Lavy or it seems MSL does.

as posters on the twitter thread pointed out
Stu11 : 1/18/2024 8:44 am : link
Lindy has only himself to blame. His system calls for these shitty never ending run of backwards/sideways passes in the D-zone rather than just chipping the puck out and very possibly giving up possesion outside the zone. I know fans latch on to stupid things like the Holtz like a Dog knaws a bone. However prior to that mini outburst in the 3rd the Devils hadn't scored off a goalie in over 6 periods. Maybe you want to play your skilled players together to up your chances? Any way its a moot point. He's not getting fired and I think with the injuries, poor goaltending, spotty play in their own zone it just might not be the Devs year. Oh well I still think the future is bright.

Jay on the Island : 1/18/2024 8:54 am : link
This is what drives me crazy about Ruff. A young player makes one mistake, hardly a big deal last night as you mentioned, and then he benches them or barely plays them. Meanwhile veterans like Wood, Brendan Smith, etc make several mistakes every game yet they don’t lose any playing time. He did the same thing with Sharangovich who is now playing very well in Calgary. Then again who needs Holtz when you have superstars like Chris Tierney, Max Willman, and Nathan Bastian. Btw Holtz has more goals then all of them combined but he received nearly half the ice time last night as Bastian.

time for Ruff to go before he ruins Holtz.

As you know I've been on this all season with the injuries. Why the hell are they playing these garbage career AHL'ers instea of bringing up a Stillman who even combines a little sandpaper with his skill? Obviously we both want Clarke up here as well. Max friggen Willman. Mind boggling.

I'm worried about Nolan Foote. When he returns he I have a bad feeling that Ruff will not use him and continue to play the AHL'ers over him and attempt to send him down to Utica. If that happens he will surely be claimed off waivers.

At this point I would just release Holtz. We need to make room for another career AHL'er. Maybe they can bring back the great Mason Geersten to replace Holtz. Holtz scored his 11th even strength goal of the season tonight which leads the Devils. Keep in mind that he was playing on a line with Max Willman.

If this was a one time instance I might be able to understand it better but Ruff did the same thing with Sharangovich who is now breaking out with Calgary after being given a chance and he has outperformed Toffoli.

I am just so tired of watching Ruff's weak system. If the Devils are to turn this around they need new leadership.
Couture
pjcas18 : 1/20/2024 12:31 pm : link
back tonight after a long injury rehab.

Couture has a hefty price tag for a sub PPG 34-year old player, but he's got a good two-way game (even though he's not great on the dots) and a solid veteran presence could be moved at the deadline if a team can swing the 3 more years at $8M per on his deal (or SJS eats some of it). The latter is more likely IMO. I always liked Couture but I'm not paying $8M per for his 35 - 37 year old seasons.

Ruff's system just doesn't work and he either refuses to make adjustments or is incapable of doing so.

Yeah they've had too many games lately like tonight, Monday in Boston where they don't put any pressure at all on the puck or threaten the other team at all. No Jack hurts, but the system has been broken much of the season.

Athletic article on ranking players under 23.

Bedard #1 as a bubble generational player, Hughes as an elite NHL'er, Luke Hughes at 7 in tier 3, Laf 19, Perreault at 45, Kakko 64, Schneider 85, Othmann 94, Cuylle 118.

Slafkovsky at 20 seems a little low.
The Athletic - ( New Window )
Slafkovsky
pjcas18 : 1/21/2024 3:03 pm : link
is becoming a legit NHL power forward at 19. He seems like he's still growing into his body. He's 6'3 probably 240 at 19.

I wouldn't take Lafreniere over him if they were in the same draft and I'm a Lafreniere fan.

That's just me.

I think he will become a better player than half the players ranked ahead of him.

And there were times last year I felt like the Habs made a horrible mistake and should have taken Cooley and Slafkovsky had almost no standout skill. Now they all standout.
....
BrettNYG10 : 1/21/2024 3:14 pm : link
I don't watch enough of you guys to really comment, but Slafkovsky seems to be on track. He was drafted as a bit of a project.
He (Slaf) was always
pjcas18 : 1/21/2024 3:39 pm : link
going to be a project and was unfortunately the #1 in a draft with no generational prospect and went to the center of the hockey universe. So the criticism, compared to someone like Lafreniere was exponential.

but the line of Caufield, Suzuki, and Slafkovsky is about as much fun as I've had watching MTL in long time.

Still a project, but he has tools you just can't teach and watching the development is fun.

Word is MTL is close to selling their sellable parts. Jack Edwards mentioned some things late stage on the broadcast last night.

on NHL news since a week long business trip...

sounds like the U18 Canada team individual "penalties" are being handed out.

feb 5th sounds like the date things will become more "public" than players taking leaves of absence.

Oilers are on fire
so are Avs (MacKinnon especially)

Just to show you how good VAN has been - EDM has won 15 in a row (30 out of 30 points) and are still 12 pts behind VAN (with 4 games in hand so best case 4 pts behind after a 19 game win streak).
Gallagher
pjcas18 : 1/27/2024 2:28 pm : link

McDavid
pjcas18 : 1/27/2024 6:58 pm : link
with the 4 pt game (Draisaitl 3) as EDM extends win streak to 16. 1 from the NHL record.

left for dead 6 weeks ago, man, the NHL is strange sometimes.
Friedman
pjcas18 : 1/28/2024 12:32 pm : link
suggests NYR interest in Sean Monahan - I mean who wouldn't be interested in him, he's a 60-pt (plus) two-way C (when healthy). he's a 1C or 2C on any team that doesn't have McDavid and Draisaitl.

However, Friedman also suggests the two FO's hate each other and may not want to do business. That was news to me. I know the history with Gorton in NY, but didn't realize they had animosity.

that said, I hope MTL finds a way to keep Monahan. If Dach and Newhook don't go down for the year (and to a lesser extent Dvorak) MTL would be a fringe team and while still probably sellers could deal players like Armia and Dvorak maybe Savard and solidify the core (including Monahan who is obviously older than the rest of the group).

If Monahan is traded it's a 1st round pick or 2nd and a good prospect IMO and if he's playing in your top 6 that price is worth it all day.

I do think he gets moved for my latter point (he's 29 years old and the core is 22-25), and whoever gets him will get a really good player, surprised me since he hasn't been healthy in so long, I forgot how good he was.
Laine

Animosity between FO's? Everything is high school, lol.

My guess is Drury played politics well and got Gorton canned.
What did you think of Gorton?
pjcas18 : 1/28/2024 2:29 pm : link
I'm not sure what to think. He makes some moves that I feel like are ingenious and then some head scratchers. I think Slafkovsky was a ballsy pick, the easy move would have just been take Shane Wright.

but too soon to see the plan.

I do feel comforted though that Kent Hughes is there as a buffer.
.....
BrettNYG10 : 1/28/2024 3:17 pm : link
I liked Gorton. I think he got the 'strategy' for the Rangers right--rebuild, build through the draft, etc. The Rangers rebuild was successful more due to luck than genius: Fox wanting to come here, Panarin coming, Shesterkin being as good as he is.

But that couldn't have been done if the strategy wasn't right. I'd point to the Red Wings as a team who got the strategy right but didn't have the same lottery luck.

I think he got unlucky here. I'd prefer him over Drury, who I think sucks.

With that said, we have continued to have awful forward development. This is a decades long issue with the Rangers, and Gorton no doubt deserves some blame.
I can't complain
pjcas18 : 1/28/2024 3:27 pm : link
about F development in MTL.

Caufield went a half season without scoring
Slafkovsky looked like an AHL player
Dach went from an afterthought to a top 6 player
Newhook was a throw in (top 15 pick, but a throw in)
Suzuki would have been good anywhere IMO

and other young guys still who look like they can play at this level.

D too. Guhle, Xhekaj, Harris, Struble, Barron - all under 24 and all look like they fit in the top 6.

they just need to keep improving because overall the talent level isn't good enough yet and the bottom 6 needs work.

plus goalie (lol). I like Montembeault, but not sure he's your #1.

and it's a big one. Way overpay if you ask me, but VAN has the assets to overpay.

"Elias Lindholm was traded to the Vancouver Canucks by the Calgary Flames for Andrei Kuzmenko on Wednesday.

Calgary also received Vancouver’s first-round pick and a conditional fourth-round selection in the 2024 NHL Draft, and defenseman prospects Hunter Brzustewicz and Joni Jurmo."

Lindholm
pjcas18 : 2/1/2024 1:33 pm : link
is obviously a good player, and he's become good on the dots, but he's a FA after the season, so if this is a rental IMO it's a lot for a rental.

Kuzmenko, because he was a rookie last year gets mistaken for being young, he's not, he's 27 or 28, still a steep price IMO unless VAN extends Lindholm.

It's maddening because it seems clear to everyone but Fitzgerald that Ruff is not the answer. I heard that Ruff and Fitzgerald are really close friends and I am worried that Fitzgerald is reluctant to fire his friend especially when he can just blame their struggles on the injuries.

Vanecek has been the worst goaltender in the NHL this season and they still haven't replaced him. IMO the defense will look noticeably different when a new coach steps in. Ruff's system puts too much pressure on the DMen and goaltenders.

Stu11 : 2/3/2024 9:29 am : link
And it's not gonna be magically fixed when Jack walks back through the door after the ASB. It's broken. They're not pushing play and pressuring the puck like last year. They're not creating odd man rushes. Quite the opposite they're spending shifts at a time pinned in their zone. The 2 games before the break were 2 of the most disheartening games of the season. I turned both off.

Jack centering Matthew and Brady (or really any of them being center) with Luke and Quinn on D. no reason why but I think that would be a cool line. so much talent in the league right now NHL in the Olympics would be awesome.

Canada will be insane obviously with McDavid, MacKinnon, Makar, I think Crosby is going to try and hold on long enough to make it. I hope he plays too.

and I hope Russia is in.

I read it will be an NHL sized rink, not Olympic sized which does make you wonder why there is an Olympic size but whatever, benefits the US (and Canada) since their rinks are all NHL size by default.

I agree. Cap relief really isn't warranted for the rest of the season. I do think if this goes into next season I think the hit should go away. Also an interesting note. Everyone else was charged with 1 count. McLeod was hit with 2.

I am pretty disgusted with the handling of this situation. The Devils re-signed McLeod with this hanging over his head plus they also signed Cal Foote who was also involved. Did they just take both players words when they offered the contracts? Did NJ check into any of these allegations against either player? The Fitzgerald extension looks more confusing after this news broke today.

McLeod received additional charges because he allegedly was aiding in other players to join in.

Yeah Fitzgerald has had a rough season. His decision to stick with Ruff is by far the worst but his inability to replace Vanecek is concerning.

if he's truly available. he is a rental, and other than being a natural LW (he can play RW though and has) he's probably the player who moves their top 6 the most.

Pens probably want more to trade him in division, but it will depend what his market is. Without the 1st round pick it's a non-starter though IMO.

Jay by the middle of last night's game I was really demoralized. I love the team too much to stop watching, but I just stopped expecting much at this point. We're not gonna get on the 5 or 6 game roll that we need because when your goaltending is mediocre to lousy they might play well for a game or 2 but then you know the 4 or 5 goal clunker is coming. Chalk up another goaltending loss last night. Play was pretty even, but Markstrom simply outplayed Vanacek. It's as simple as that. Fitz is in the midst of sitting around and wasting a year of this core's career.
The reverse
pjcas18 : 2/9/2024 5:33 pm : link
check (Lafreniere on Sergachev) will be squarely in the rules committee's (or whatever it's called) targets this off-season.

When I got my level 4 coaching cert about 5 or 6 years ago they mentioned USA hockey was looking to outlaw it from youth to college and that hasn't happened, but I think it will now that a high visibility injury occurred. They also mentioned they were looking to remove "non-necessary" physical play and the whole room of 200+ coaches let out a collective WTF?

Technically the reverse check has always been against the letter of the rule. You cannot initiate contact with someone who doesn't have the puck, but it has become a "self defense" or protective measure like play and just accepted (and perfected) by some.

I hate that they are trying to remove it, to me if you can get hit while chasing the puck or in possession of the puck you should be able to use your body to protect yourself from that collision.

No idea how they can legislate this out and still keep things inline with the core philosophies of hockey and not create a massive ref show every game.

Will be interesting.

Guerin named US GM (again - I believe he was before they yanked NHL players from the 2022 Olympics).

I wonder who the coach will be. I'd pick Mike Sullivan. Sullivan was an assistant on the '06 Olympic team. The talent on that US team compared to this one is night and day. Neither the US or Canada medaled in the 2006 Olympics, which the US not medaling isn't news, but Canada was. US lost in the QF's to Finland who lost the gold to Sweden. The Czech's beat Russia for the bronze.

By Canada standards that Olympic team was subpar too. I mean they had Sakic (36 years old), MSL, Iginla , Pronger - who I think are all HOFers Thornton, Heatley and others, but no McDavid, Crosby, MacKinnon, Gretzky, Lemieux, Yzerman, etc. level talent. Their talent was in net with Brodeur and Luongo.

Weird Olympics. I guess.

According to Elliot Friedman the sticking point was salary retention. Calgary ownership is dead set against it. If that's the case awful job by the Devils. They have Dougie Hamilton's 9mill on ltir fur this season so it's not a cap issue and he has 1 year after this so if you have them take Vanacek back its only a net plus 3 mill or so on the cap next year.

After missing time early this season I thought he would never lead the league in point.

He's 13 off the crazy pace Kucherov is on.

Crosby said before the season he think McDavid could have a 200 point season, and if he didn't get hurt it was very possible.

he's short of a 2 ppg pace, but not by much and the first two weeks he came back was too soon (he wanted to play in the Heritage classic).

I wonder the odds today for McDavid to lead the league in points. Being 13 behind you have to believe you would get decent odds and I think I'd put some money on that.

I agree 100%. If they aren't going to fire Lindy Ruff they should not make any major trades. Even if they land Markstrom and Hanifin from Calgary they will lose in the first round of the playoffs anyway. Hanifin will leave in free agency and Holtz will go on to become a 30+ goal scorer for the Flames.

It would be great if one of the two youngsters just called up could stick.

I would start rotating Wheeler out (with Vesey?) or someone Drury can get without giving up much. I wouldn't move Kakko; that L3 looks like it may be developing. It's possibe that Wheeler's experience could be helpful in the playoffs.

I've been hoping they can dump Goodrow. Ottawa has been looking for vet leadership, and he could certainly provide that. That could open up $$ for RW help.

McDavid
pjcas18 : 2/15/2024 8:06 am : link
has the combination of

1. Speed (he just has speeds that are faster than everyone else - he literally is the fastest skater in the league - that's not hyperbole)

2. Elite skating/edge work - this is important - I know you know hockey, but this is like fluidity in a db or precise route running in a WR or escapability in a QB, burst from an edge - for a hockey player it gets you separation (and more) - think of it for a player with the puck as buying you time and space

3. Skill - besides the speed and skating he can stick handle in a phone booth and use defenders in ways most other players can't or don't

4. Shot - he has an elite shot (and it's probably his least impressive aspect of his game)

5. Size - unlike most people with his skill and skating ability he is not a finesse player he is 6' 1" 200 lbs and doesn't play a soft game

6. IQ - in spite of 1-5 being an ultra rare combination #6 may be what sets him apart the most, I have seen plays he makes where he (to use the cliche) "sees the whole ice" better than anyone since Gretzky and he sets up plays in his mind seconds in advance anticipating what others will do (his opponents and teammates) and making jaw dropping highlight reel plays. I see him play sometimes and I feel like his teammates just can't keep up with him at times or they don't have the skill to maximize his talent as a teammate. the only other current player I have watched and felt this way about is Nathan MacKinnon, but with McDavid depending who he's on the ice with it is sometimes even more apparent. He has Draisaitl who is awesome, like MacKinnon has Rantanen, but most of their linemates can't stay with them and it does impact their games a little IMO.

if there is a weakness in McDavid it's that he hasn't won a title and that one will dog him until he does.

Nice!

I have watched every start Jake Allen has made the past 3 years (or however long he's been a Hab, what's the point? He does have another year under contract, but is he an upgrade? )

from LeBrun in the Athletic today:

...Markstrom, Saros and the quirky goalie market

Despite a failed attempt recently at reeling in Jacob Markstrom from Calgary, I’m told the New Jersey Devils will continue to try to find a way to make a deal work with the Flames before March 8. That doesn’t mean they’ll be able to get it done, of course.

My understanding is that there was disagreement in trade talks between the teams over Calgary retaining salary on Markstrom’s contract, which runs for another two and a half years at $6 million per. And tied to that, I think there was disagreement on what the cost, asset-wise, should be just for salary retention if Calgary did agree to it, in addition to the other parts of a proposed trade.

But New Jersey hasn’t closed the door on Markstrom. The Devils will keep trying. And in the meantime, they have also kicked tires on the likes of Juuse Saros, John Gibson and Jake Allen, among other goalies....

Yeah I think Markstrom is the one they've zeroed in on. I didn't realize he had 2 more years after this left on his contract though. Thats a pretty big gulp for a 34 year old at 6 mill per. I agree on Allen, he's no big upgrade at all. Gibson I've really soured on. ton of $ left and he's constantly getting injured this year. He hasn't finished his last 2 starts. I'd almost look at him as a negative assett at this point. Meanwhile Daws has been great the past 3 games, especially last night. First of, let me say HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I have waited quite a while for the Penguins to be garbage again, and I would like to savor it.

Secondly....Ryan Graves isn't a star or anything, but a solid back pairing guy who could have value for a contender looking to shore up the defense. Not much else though....maybe someone rolls the dice on Rakell?
Graves

is arguably their most valuable asset. He does have a M-NTC and he's under contract for an affordable 5 more years after this season at 4.5M per.

For that reason I think they keep him.

If they trade him they're relying on 37 year old Letang and 34 year old Karlsson as their top pair.

with 37 year old Crosby and 38 year old Malkin their top two C's.

Weird to say but they almost have to be buyers, and hope to turn things around. I don't even think they can tear this down between the ages, salaries and clauses.

So a lot of the media pounced on it and said seriously, a "fortunate bounce" prevented him from committing a rape/sexual assault.

Definitely poor choice of words by him, but I don't think he was saying literally if he decided to go to the gala with his teammates he would have raped a woman, so lucky bounce for him. But I agree it was an awful response.
Auston Matthews
pjcas18 : 2/17/2024 8:26 pm : link
is on absolute fire.

2 more goals tonight (still in the 2nd period).

He gets overlooked with the games greats because his teams have had some famous failures, but not many can shoot it like Matthews in the league. He can release from so many angles it's hard for goalies to read. Plus he's a big dude even if he doesn't play a heavy game (kind of like Kreider) so he can get some greasy goals since he's hard to move in front of the net.

He has consistently scored his whole career.
Just got the hat trick
pjcas18 : 2/17/2024 8:30 pm : link
still in the 2nd period.

He has 48 goals in 52 games (so far).

He has led the league in 5v5 goals 4 times (including as a 19 year old rookie) and does this year too.

Silly question. What makes hockey players able to play at an old age in comparison to other sports?

Chris Chelios was like 50 when he finally stopped playing. What was the difference in his game and what could someone like him "get away" with doing in the sport of hockey, playing at such an ... Older age?

They’re tougher mentally lol. Good question Have a friend who played 14 years in the NHL. . Dude is different breed. I also think hockey teams have a place for players as they age as they run multiple lines And TBH. There always outliers.

there is a 90 year old guy who plays beer league in the town next to me (Natick, MA). His 70 year old son is in the league too. if anyone even accidentally goes near the older guy they get their face caved in, lol. It's funny to see him play because in his equipment and with his helmet on (no cage) you can tell he's old, but not 90. Obviously not NHL but still pretty impressive to compete with men 30/40 years old when you're half a century (or more) older.

One of my beer league teammates when we were younger, he was probably 40 years old (he's older than me) got a contract with the FHL Delaware Federals who needed a body to play some minutes in a game on the Cape vs the Cape Cod Blue Fins. He played two games. Who gives a shit it's pro and he made his debut at 40 (he had 2 PIMs and was - 6 in the two games). He played college at Union. We call him squirrel because he was faster than everyone and people chased him around the ice like dogs chasing a squirrel.

Anyway, wish I knew. Love of the game?

Matthews keeps up his 70+ goal pace.

with 2 more last night he becomes the fastest US born player to 50 goals.

50 goals in 54 games.

He broke his own record of 62 games (tied with Kevin Stevens)

My son and I were joking about this last night. He gets all the info you are talking about on twitter/YouTube. Like it's really impressive and I was telling him about how big Mike Bossy's chase was to get 50 in 50 when I was a kid and how dramatic it was to him getting 2 in the 3rd period of game 50. Then like the next year Gretzky did it in 38 games. We joked Gretzky was some different breed of hockey human being. I mean it's a great season to get 100 points and Gretzky got over 200 4 times in 5 seasons(196 the 5th one) its just insane. 11 seasons in a row with over 100 assists alone. I watched it and I still don't believe what I saw.
I didn't realize Matthews almost had 50 in 50
Greg from LI : 2/22/2024 8:57 am : link
Been a long time since anyone did that. I think Brett Hull was the last one.

On the subject of goals...what does everyone think of Ovi's chances of breaking the record now? He's finally having a season where his numbers, thus far at least, are declining noticeably. If he doesn't miss any more games this season, he's on pace for 24 goals this year. That would put him at 846, 48 behind Gretzky. Is he going to fall off a cliff over the next couple of years or can he keep chugging along at a 20ish per season pace for a few more years?

will stick it out until he breaks the record even if he limps along to do it.

he began the season slowly but I think had a 6 or 7 game goal streak recently.
Yeah Ovi got a couple vs the Devils the other night
Stu11 : 2/22/2024 1:58 pm : link
I think he has something like 7 in his last 8 games. Who knows goal scoring can be luck at times, getting the right bounces. I think next year is the key. If he declines any more it will be tough but if he can get 20-25 he'll stick it out.

Edmonton needs a goaltender in the worst way, IMO.

Sure, they might win the Cup but the odds are against it with their current tending.

I could see Ulmark getting sent there in the offseason from BOS.

Last night post game Lindy Ruff blamed the media for the teams struggling power play causing "excess pressure" on the players. If he isn't fired soon then ownership needs to take seriously consider moving on from Fitzgerald also. The guy has blamed everyone but himself for the teams pitiful performance this season.

When Brunette left to become HC of Nashville I said that I was worried that much of the Devils success was because of him not Ruff last season. Now it's becoming more obvious that I was right.

I have been saying this for most of McDavid's tenure. the fact they haven't gotten him a goalie is criminal.

it's at least McDavid's 3rd GM and astonishingly he's still *just* 27 years old.

Jay it's been a long time, if ever since I've seen a coach do as poor of a job as Ruff has this season. The lineups he puts out there night in night out defy logic. It's like a toddler threw darts at a dartboard or something. Thankfully I spent the day in the city yesterday and took in a Broadway show with the wife last night and missed that embarrassment. Timo on the 3rd line and little to no PP time for weeks now? Jack on the wing? Starting Smith & Luke together vs Washington when the metrics have them as as the 20th worst pairing in the league when put together, and of course they're on the ice for like 3 goals including a tap in 30 seconds into the game. I agree I generally have no beef with Fitz but this season has been a complete debacle from top to bottom. I wouldn't have an issue with any of them being fired over this. First that let Ruff hide behind the injuries, well now everyone is back besides Dougie and the past 2 games have been completely embarrassing. I don't see how a coach survives that.

still trying to extend Hanifin, but he seems intent on playing in the US.

If he didn't sign the 8-year deal they offered in September, no clue why they think he'd sign it now.

he bet on himself and it seems like he won.

He already has the most goals in his career and he has had a good year. Probably wind up close to his career high in points (or exceed it).

Does Calgary play chicken and risk him walking in FA or do they trade him?

Calgary in WC contention (just 3 points back of NSH with a lot to play), but I think they should be sellers.

If they are wise they would trade him. He will leave in free agency and they will receive nothing. Even if they do make the playoffs they won't get far.

Separate from your post, but what a deal that Tkachuk trade turned into. I liked it from FL's perspective, mostly due to Tkachuk's style and age vs. Huberdeau, but never thought it would be this good for FL and this bad for CAL.

I think the big thing is it should never have got to that point. Cost Treliving his job. You lose Gaudreau and Tkachuck and the return (for Gaudreau was nothing) and Tkachuk underwhelms you damage your franchise.

I like Weegar but Huberdeau has done nothing but make Sasha Barkov look better, lol.

Lost the second game of back to back again, I don't think they've won one all year. About to hit the road for three games on the West coast. At this point, if they don't come away with at least 4 points (probably need 6), they are toast.

I'll be at the Devils-Sharks game on Tuesday, they better not get swept by the sharks this year.

just asked Sullivan before the Pens game about coaching the 2026 Olympic team. Sully didn't say he had been asked, but he was slated to be the HC in 2022 before they pulled the NHL from the Olympics, but reminded me he was the assistant in the Turin Olympics in 2006 when Lavy was the head coach. Between those two US is in good hands.

Here is a graphic about a possible US roster.

They have my Hughes/Tkachuck line, but not Luke Hughes (he looks like an alternate). 2026 is a couple years away....

Stu11 : 2/25/2024 4:06 pm : link
And I can't believe I'm saying this but I have no interest watching the next few. Today was an embarrassment. Kucherov, Point, and Stamkos skated circles around them all day. This game easily could have been 8-1. The system is so broken right now I don't even know how you fix it. Firing Lindy would be months late at this point. Fitz has basically been on vacation since the summer. Hasn't lifted a finger to try and change what is going on. Of course we need a forward body today and up from the minors comes up you guessed it another career AHL'er Brian Halonen! Why bring up a 1st pick with a little fire and physicality like Stillman? Nahhhh lets sleepwalk through another must win game. Should have lost yesterday too to Montreal. They outplayed us. Jack is an issue too. He misses too much time, then when he comes back like clockwork is awful for a few weeks before he gets going. He looks lost out there right now.
Stu I get it
Jay on the Island : 2/25/2024 4:24 pm : link
I agree that they should have brought up Stillman or even Graeme Clarke but they went with Halonen. It's still better than several of the AHL garbage they called up earlier as Halonen has been red hot in the AHL.

It is obvious that Fitzgerald is going to stick with Ruff all season. Let's face it the season is over they aren't going to go on a magical run with this disaster running the team. If Ruff is brought back then ownership needs to step in and fire Fitzgerald as well.

I don't know who/how the talks broke down or that goalie would have made all the difference in NJ, but when you get that chance at a goalie of that caliber on an expected contender you make it happen.

They sure are and it's better for the future if they don't make the playoffs because it will ensure that they fire Ruff and bring in a better coach. If they somehow made the playoffs Fitzgerald could try to use the injuries as an excuse for them losing in the first round as the reason why they didn't go on a run. The truth is this team is nearly back to full strength and they look just as bad.

Yea Fitzgerald has been close for him and Markstrom but failed to get it finalized. I am glad that they didn't land Markstrom but Fitzgerald's main fault so far has been his failure to address the goaltending issues. This offseason he should go hard for Saros if he is available.
Couple Habs notes...
pjcas18 : 2/25/2024 8:08 pm : link
The Canadiens had their annual skills competition and Arber Xhekaj clocked hardest shot with an insane 107.2 mph. That's almost Chara level.

Also, apparently steam is picking up between the Habs and Ducks involving Trevor Zegras. No idea why ANA would consider trading Zegras. He's a guy IMO you build around, not trade away. No clue what would go the other way. a young D and some picks? Apparently ANA feels like they have "too many" good young forwards. They do have a lot of good youth, but still Zegras isn't a guy I'd trade for no reason.

If not the Habs, it does seem like ANA is shopping Zegras - not merely "listening" to offers.

Maybe they thought he was going to come back and play. The guy looks great for his age. Or maybe being traded to DET and winning two cups with them and none with CHI didn't ingratiate him to the Blackhawks fans. Not sure.

He and Jagr, they don't make them like that anymore.

I was heartbroken when MTL traded him and that was probably the last time I cared about players on a team.

pjcas18 : 2/26/2024 8:35 am : link

Columbus, Chicago, and Arizona all got points last night (the latter two the loser point in OTL) and all three played against playoff teams.

they and San Jose and Anaheim are the 5 worst teams in the league.

it should surprise no one while at the same time it's not what anyone would have expected - in the NHL any team can beat any team.

left off with MTL at #10 and then:

#9 Arizona
#8 Nashville
#7 Chicago
#6 Philadelphia (even after dealing Cutter Gauthier I guess)
#5 Anaheim

😂😂

Well another game and like clockwork the devils surrender the first goal. Good news is the one pp they had looked lively.

Actually a decent amount of devils fans at the shark tank; more than I was expecting. Timo got a nice tribute for his first game back in San Jose.

traded to Stars. Dominoes will start falling now that the top D-man expected to be moved is moved.

"The Calgary Flames have agreed to trade veteran defenceman Chris Tanev to the Dallas Stars, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported Wednesday.

Friedman reports that defence prospect Artem Grushnikov, a second-round pick and a conditional draft pick will go to Calgary in exchange for Tanev. The Flames will retain 50 per cent of Tanev's contract, which has a $4.5 million AAV and expires this summer."

The devils were also involved, taking on $1.125 million in dead cap for Tanev. That makes the deal even better for Dallas. In exchange the devils get the stars fourth round pick in 2026 and sent an unsigned goalie prospect to Dallas. Using that Dougie Hamilton cap relief!

Yes. in every way except on the dots.

Pettersson is a top 10 center in the league IMO and as mentioned, he's 25 years old.

And JT Miller is the player in VAN who deserves to be in the Hart discussion.

He is having an insane year offensively and defensively.

And some people say Quinn Hughes is the VAN MVP (I don't think he is, but he could get close to 90 points).

says the Panthers aggressively pursuing Hanifin and Guentzel.

they don't have a 1st round pick in 2024 or 2025 (and conditionally potentially no 2026 though that condition is a long shot) so not sure how either trade happens.

She did mention they would consider parting ways with their pending UFAs. Who? Reinhart for Guentzel? Not sure how that would help them.

They only have two D on the roster after the season and they do have cap room, so maybe a 3-team trade. I have to think PIT gets at least 1 1st for Guentzel and CAL does for Hanifin too.

Cool the Devils just traded for Mason Geersten 2.0. What a poor performance by Tom Fitzgerald after a strong offseason. Failed to address the goaltending once again, hung onto Ruff far too long now the season is lost, failed to add another defensive defenseman that the team really needed. Now he adds toughness when the Devils are 5 points out of the playoff hunt but Philly has two games in hand.

Don't knock it Jay, give it a week Lindy the fool will have MacDermid on Jack's line. Absolute organizational failure from top to bottom this year. Listen Fitz gets another summer to try and fix this mess, but if we are in this same situation a year from now he's a goner. Also if he has any stupid concept in his head to bring back senile Lindy there needs to be an organizational intervention.

Flames, Markstrom stuff is weird.

Flames asked Markstrom to waive his NTC for a trade to NJD. Markstrom says ok. Flames and Devils can't work out a trade and then Markstrom is playing so well the Flames tell him they want to keep him now. Devils publicly say Markstrom is their top target at the deadline.

Flames traded Tanev and Lindholm already, and likely will trade Hanifin, so why keep Markstrom with 2 years left if you're tearing it down - unless they expect a Huberdeau resurgence? I think they regret the Kadri deal. he's a good complementary player, but signing him to term off a career year at 31 playing with MacKinnon wasn't probably that smart. but that guy (Treliving) is gone.

Also, Elliotte said last night the Pens say they prefer prospects to picks. they want two prospects for Guentzel. this is better for teams like TBL who do not have a 1st round pick.

though they don't have much in the way of prospects either.

signing was bad too, lol.

I was sort of surprised PIT "re-upped" Crosby, Malkin and Letang. and then doubled down with Karlsson. They're all old. They don't have a lot of draft picks or a good prospect pool (27th ranked prospect pool according to Wheeler). Unless they get some lottery luck this could be a lengthy rebuild.

After this season Crosby only has one year left. I can see him retiring - he's not chasing records (AFAIK) he has 3 rings, Olympic gold, what's left? Maybe I can see him hang around on a one year deal until the 2025-2026 season/Olympics.

I think he's said it will be awesome for him, Malkin and Letang to play their whole careers together in PIT - and all 3 have some type of NMC/NTC.

Brutal loss in Anaheim on Friday night and currently down 4-1 after two against LA. Defense has been horrific today. They would probably need to go like 15-5 or better over the last 20 to get in.

Devils would be insane to be buyers at this point.

The season is over. To be honest I hope they miss the playoffs as it will cement Ruff's fate. If they make the playoffs I could see Fitzgerald trying to justify another year for Ruff blaming the injuries if they sneak into the playoffs. If they did make the playoffs they will lose badly in the first round anyway.

Watch Holtz and Meier next season with a new HC. All of a sudden they will look noticeably better in a real system.

I agree with you that this is a make or break offseason for Fitzgerald. Honestly if he tries to bring Ruff back he should be fired immediately. He needs to address the goaltending position, hire the right HC, and add some real toughness. When I say toughness I don't mean a useless goon like MacDermid or Geersten I mean a physical bottom 6 player that can actually contribute more than just fighting on 3-5 minutes of ice time.
