Marco Vargas is injured, unclear if it's the same issue that has limited him to 3 games and a previous IL stint
-Infielder/centerfielder Jett Williams, the Mets’ top prospect, went on the seven-day injured list with Double-A Binghamton because of a right wrist issue.
After he jammed it, sat out for a week and didn’t feel well enough to play, the Mets opted to officially sideline him. He might get a cortisone injection, and the Mets are inclined to take his return very slowly, given his importance to the organization.
Before getting hurt, Williams was off to a slow start at the plate, batting .180 with a .668 OPS. He also played several games at second base, his first professional exposure to that position, his potential eventual defensive home.
Saul Garcia (received a nice report from @BaseballAmerica before the season) has been activated from the 7 day IL. Garcia has stuck out 7 over 3.2 innings of work for @stluciemets. He figures to join @BKCyclones shortly

As for their pitching, I've been following their prospects for 30+ years. I honestly don't remember a time when they've had the organizational pitching depth that they do now. They've had times where they had higher end prospects, of course. But just the sheer depth is impressive.
Baez and Houck both down swinging. It's early but there has to be some concern with Houck. K% over 30%. First round pick shouldn't be struggling like this in Low-A ball. He was a 2 sport guy so it's possible he'll be a slow burn type.
-Mike Mayer points out that Morabito currently is running a 63% GB% and a .510 BABIP. So regression is certainly coming. We'll see how he adjusts.

Thankfully, this regime appears a lot better about getting minor league depth (Choi, Gamel, Brosseau, Iglesias, etc.), that they shouldn't have to trade for such replacement level players.

Very interesting player. To me, his ceiling is a Nimmo with speed. Obviously, not likely to reach that, but he has some serious upside.

Remember Nimmo's pop was a bit unexpected. In Nimmo's age 20, A season, he played 110 games with 24 XBH. An XBH every 4.58 games vs. Morabito's XBH every 4.11 games. 2 HRs for both in that span.
Trust me, I'm not expecting a Nimmo. He's been one of the better OFs in the game the past few years, but he does have that type of upside if he can improve the swing and develop the additional pop that Nimmo did. I do agree a realistic expectation would be a good 4th OF.

You're comparing the wrong seasons, Morabito is 21 this season (21 next week). Nimmo at 21 hit 10 homers, 9 triples, 21 doubles. There is a reason Nimmo was a top prospect and pipeline has Morabito #26 and BA doesn't even have him top 30 and it's not because they see him having "Nimmo esque" realistic upside.

Nimmo started in rookie ball in 2011 at 18. Played 69 games in A- at 19. So, he had 87 games by his age 20 A season I talked about.
Morabito had 6 games in his age 19 season. I am looking at his next season of 57 games and the start of this season.
The stats I am looking at for Morabito are after he had played 6 games vs. Nimmo after he had played 69 games. Nimmo was younger than Morabito when drafted.
What prevails? The age or experience? I don't know, but they'd come close enough to me to offset each other and offer a roughly fair comparison.

DSL Preseason which is why the suspended Anthony Baptist is allowed to play. I'm not really clear why (Larez also suspended and eligible to play). Yovanny Rodriguez is the guy to really circle, I don't want to look foolish if he sucks but *2* different people said the Mets thought he had more upside than Francisco Alvarez. One called him a "Monster".

No disagreement there. They say he has "legit" 70 speed. He might be the 2nd fastest runner in the organization. Omar De Los Santos has 80 speed but isn't very good at anything else.
They absolutely LOVE him. I haven't heard this much buzz around a Mets IFA in years. Granted, this is coming from the Mets side so sure, grain of salt but I've been lucky enough to speak to those who would know for a good 4-5 signing periods now and nobody has been on the level of Rodriguez. In no way am I saying "he's better than Alvarez" or even will be. Maybe he's a complete bust, but they are over the moon with his pure talent.
Move him up to Bing, and give him a fresh start on this season.

Andrew Christie suggested before the season they were considering placing him there so who knows? He has 1 single HR and slugging sub .400, he's walking a ton, striking out at a high but acceptable rate but showing very, very little power. Not sure what being in BK does for him at this poit.

Coming into today Somebody get the Cyclones some offensive help! 11/12 in runs, tied for 10th in HR's, 9th in average, 9th in OPS. They have 1 hit so far.

Jesus Baez has displayed some very encouraging tendencies in Single-A thus far
He is just 19 and has showcased elite power for his age as well as an advanced plate approach. His contact metrics are fantastic.
With a foundation like this, he will be a name to watch!
I saw Vasil's start and was happy for him, then went back to the struggling. Any word on what's going on with him? Scouting the box score, obviously it looks like control problems and getting hit hard. Not a good combo

Lacks an out pitch and his command isn't good enough to nibble. Why he often falls apart after a few innings, your guess is as good as mine. But his era is now near 11.

last year the pitching was lagging except maybe vasil who had the good year, this year all the pitching except vasil is surging.
last year it was jett and mauricio, then houck was an exciting pick who fell, acuna, gilbert, clifford. this year 2 of them are hurt and the other 4 have been quiet so far. vargas also hasnt played much, fcl (jrod) hasnt started yet.
so other than scott there's not much good that's happened yet on the field with the consensus top 10 yet the system feels like it's still surging forward bc of tong, baez, scott, tidwell, etc.

i wish we could get exit velo info on parada. i think i asked tj but he said he didnt have AA. the k rate/walk rate improvement is a positive and the babip is low, but my guess is the exit velo is bad since there's no power.
if the exit velo is good it could be some bad luck, but if there's no power nothing else really matters for him.
Eppler's first round picks seem like they were big names who other teams possibly passed on for good reasons (parada, houck). thankfully jett worked out.

He did. Played 3 of his 7 games in the OF. I suspect he plays multiple positions again this year. His bat is what will dictate his career ala Daniel Murphy (though Murphy was beast level college hitter whereas Ewing is a HS pick so who knows? Fun team

My complete guess is we hear Matt Allan is going to retire but yeah in March DiComo reported he hoped to begin throwing in May, well it's May. Safe to say if he doesn't begin throwing in May it's not a great sign. He had TJ January 2023, so coming up 17 months ago

Those players that came over in the Scherz-lander trades were highly rated prospects in the Rangers and Astros farms. They have regressed in our system. Clifford was doing well at the High A level in Texas, then he gets to Brooklyn and suddenly can't hit.
Parada was a Top Draft Pick the Mets. He doesn't seem to be a viable defensive Catcher the way the game is played these days. It's affecting his hitting.
I want this team to develop their hitting prospects.

Hard Luck Mark got hit by a pitch when he went back to SYR. He's in the lineup today playing 3B, but K'd his first AB.
Acuna, playing CF and batting leadoff, beat out an infield hit. His speed on display, he then spoiled a DP beating the throw to second base. Two men on, nobody out. Vientos strikes out.
Hartwig's in now, gave up a long 2 RBI single to Blankenhorn who is killing SYR today.

I know you kid but I don't think I've ever heard a player mention the rollercoaster other than saying it's pretty cool. They do complain about the batters eye/and or the signage though I'm sure the rollercoaster doesn't help.

crazy how SP is now like the least of our issues. houser is in the BP, lucchessi, and Megill both on their way to pressing for call ups, Peterson and Senga at various rehab stages.
i think they will need the depth because like houser i expect at least 1 of the guys in the current rotation will get "figured out" over the course of the year, and scott will hit his innings limit, but pretty surprising to me nonetheless. they were right on their self scouting.

j-rod for pham was more obvious than most since he was hitting so well at such a young age in DSL, but id imagine other teams prospects like Daiverson Gutiérrez are the easiest types of upside players GMs like billy eppler are willing to give up at the deadline.
if they traded pete i would hope to get 2-3 j-rods/juan/gutierrez types from someone (so basically pham return times 2 or 3). i think that's better than some 24 year old former top 100.

I didn't blame anyone. Seems like he's regressing as he gets further into his career and his bat was supposed to be his carrying tool as you mentioned. Sure it's early but returns are not good at all.

Yeah, sorry it looked like I said you were blaming Mets. I didn't mean it that way, but could see how it was construed that way. I didn't mean it that way, just in the general "can't blame them for picking him."
It is weird, as college hitters are usually considered the safest prospects. He was ranked in the top 35-40 prospects in all of baseball one point too.
Marlins are going through the same thing with Jacob Berry (also one of the best college hitters that draft). He was a lot like Parada. One of the best college hitters coming out. Questions on defense, so carrying tool was offense. He's at .162 with a .469 OPs this year in AA
Maybe he's just not a Catcher at the higher levels. He's having trouble controlling the run game.
Can we just see him DH for a week or two, clear his head. See if his hit tool actually plays in the Minor Leagues.

I'm obviously not writing him off, he's been a pro for one full season, but say he just busts simple as that, how do people get baseball so wrong so often? This isn't a mid-round pick, he was #11 overall.

Kind of a tweener player overall. Plus hit tool, good speed (covers a lot of ground) weak arm, not much power. He's closer to averageish in CF, better in a corner but obviously lack of power for a corner so ... tweener profile
I think most of the amateur scouting came in with Brodie and he was also the one who finally convinced Wilpon to invest in the draft. That being said, the later regimes have kept the people in place who wanted to remain.

For sure. Like you said, the most the GM might be involved with is seeing a high pick in person although a team might frown on that because then it becomes too obvious. He probably is also sitting in on some of the scouting meetings to get a feel for what directions the draft is setting up at. If he knows, for example, that a particular position appears quite deep he might be more willing to include a minor leaguer at that position in a trade.

In tiny sample, 17 competitive swings Vientos has 'blasted' 3 balls (17.6%) while in 205 competitive swings Baty has only blasted 10 (4.9%).
On the graph below they are charted closed to each other in the top right because their swing speeds and swing lengths (and averages) are all almost the same, so the difference is Vientos squares ball up more which explains why his avg. EV has always been better.
Baty's defense has been good but if he doesn't start doing more damage consistently soon that may be worth becoming a split role.

he has always reminded me of bohm because he similarly has that long lanky build. his defense appears better than bohm too. bohm very much fits the 'old way' of comparisons, though i havent dug too deep on the under the hood stuff.
eyeballing the average EV/barrel rates/hardhit rates it looks like bohm was always a little better than baty has been even early on.

When Luis Acuna gets on base....he's going. Batting leadoff and playing CF yesterday. 2 hits and a Walk. First inning walk, immediately stole second, and then scored on a Luke Ritter single.
Later he singled, stole second and moved to third on the bad throw. When Luis gets to the big leagues, we'll call that an "Acuna Triple" as he stands on third.
Ritter and Trayce Thompson with 2 RBI days. And Megill had 6 K's in 5.1 innings. I think he might be ready to come up.

As of right this minute and this will be very fluid I'd go Baez, Vargas, Rosa, JROD, Houck, Morabito, Baro, Hernandez, Ewing. Leaving out the FCL guys except JRod as I need to see more. Good to see Juan maybe putting it together. Leaving out Daiverson and Yovanny as well.
I'd have Baez first, I think he's the future 3b of the Mets (if it's not Baty), elite EV for his age, last I checked he was 2nd in the league in K%. Quite the combo. I'd rank J-Rod second, Morabito probably 3rd but I still worry about his lack of lift/power, Rosa more upside than Morabito but far more risk. Baez and J-Rod could be top 100 prospects at this time next season, the others likely won't be. Juan would be last for me. Big bonus, great build/age but so far zero production

When guys post exit velocity like that, it seems to be pretty durable. Either they have it in their bat or they don't.
For all the things Vientos hasn't done consistently at big leagues, hitting the ball hard isn't one of them.
Conversely Baty's big league EV has always been pretty meh. Defense aside, i've long been confused by how much the former's bat was put on a pedestal and the other's put down. vientos upper minors slg% has always been better than batys, this is why.

60 hit, 55-60 power, 50-55 arm, 45-50 speed, 50 glove. I fully realize he could pack on 40 pounds from now until he's 22 and become Rafael Devers but what stood out was a sweet swing, drove the ball well considering his age and that he wasn't a Mauricio type build, less lanky, more filled out.

All I can really add is the Mets love him, the deal has been in place for at least the last 18 months and from my complete untrained eye, his swing is aesthetically a nice one.

Mets did right in drafting him again. He's been unreal. Though there have been some disappointments (hello Vasil), the pitching has been fantastic in the minors
Interesting on Jordan's position situation. Didn't realize that. He was 3:1 OF last year. My guess is the Mets are confident in his OF abilities and are trying to get him more experience in the IF. (Or could just be positional needs) Regardless, would be nice to have a cost-controlled bench guy who can play all over in a year or two.

Tong has been one of the big pitching stories of Minor League Baseball with his 0.33 ERA and 47 strikeouts over 27 2/3 innings between Single-A and High-A. The 2022 seventh-rounder has shown a 92-94 mph fastball with incredible rise in 2024, allowing for the high K rate and low ERA. His mid-80s curveball looks like another potential above-average offering, and he has a workable slider and changeup too, adding to his considerable helium.
They have missed on high picks, but the depth they are finding in the draft looks a lot more attractive than under previous scouting units.

If the draft were done today, Baro may not be a 1st round pick but he'd be a top 2-3 round pick, Ewing probably would too. Houck had red flags pre-draft, there was a fan driven narrative he fell due to cost but that wasn't really the case, it was swing concerns. I'm not "out" on him yet but I'd say I'm "concerned".

there are so many guys succeeding seemingly out of nowhere, hopefully we are finally starting to see the resources pumped into development/minors paying off.

yep he is the one guy who i could see really being worth selling high on. that would be a bidding war in the style of the andrew miller trade way back when.
if rental david robertson has brought back ben brown and marco vargas in recent years, pre-ARB Garrett has to be worth 2 guys at that level and maybe even more.
I was looking for something else but noticed an absurd stat… McLean has allowed 3 HR since HS as a pitcher. He’s hit 4 this season already as a hitter
im almost always mostly focused like 90%+ on the top 5 in the system. this is the first time i can remember probably being more excited by the next 5 than the top 5.
not to say im unenthused by gilbert, acuna, clifford, and certainly not jett or scott, but baez, tidwell, tong, j-rod, vargas, rosa, sproat, morabito. the over under has to be like 2.5 of them displacing some of the top 5 before the end of this year.

The pitching in the Mets upper minors is really shaping up nicely. Tyler Stuart (all 6' 9" of him) threw for Bing this weekend. Didn't get the win, but he picked up 9 K's, including 6 in a row at one point.
Yes, really helps with the Minor's travel budgets too. Also makes sense to keep the leagues in the same general areas. Back in the day, the Lakewood NJ Blue Claws were traveling as far south as Charleston and Savannah.....long bus rides for sure.
The only 'possible' down-side to the 6 game homestand is that the opponents see the same pitcher twice in a week.

I'm about 20 minutes from Somerset(Yankees AA) but Binghamton doesn't visit there nearly as much as I want. I only get to see them once maybe twice a year. This year I wish they were there every month.

I haven't heard anything to suggest Jett won't be back by the end of the month (granted, with injuries you never know and if you told me they decide they want to give him an extra week I wouldn't be stunned) but it would *appear* Jett Will be back in the next 10 days or so, and Gilbert a bit behind that (maybe 2-3 weeks from now).

you should give substack a try. i am the same way and my bandwidth ebbs/flows, but in the months when im more motivated and write more than 1 post ill get 1k+ views with basically 0 promotion other than dropping the link on bbi and/or the occasional twitter post.
i generally only do them when i have a thought that's a little beyond a normal post, like in the next few weeks ahead of traded deadline i want to go back to what the mets got last year and update the "values" since all those prospects have been in the system for a year and like J-Rod are now presently graded in aggregate a lot more valuably than they were last year and i think one of my first met posts last year was doing that exercise in the first place, so it's nice to have the original in a place i can easily look back at it.

this isnt to specifically knock eppler because im sure it was his strategy to target lower level higher upside, but i would imagine the lower down the level, the less the GM is familiar with the players, and more those choices are delegated to the people in the minors closest to those players (i.e. i bet someone in tannous' group was a big factor in choosing J-Rod since he'd so recently been on the IFA market).

Pretty much. Sometimes some streams will randomly land on youtube but it's basically gamecast only, as for the cost, unless something changed they are completely free.

If the Mets were ever actually good then he'd be a potential weapon as a pinch runner. Hit tool is below average (to be kind).
What do the Mets do? Do you hold back the arm to make sure the bat is ripe? If there's an MLB need and the arm is ready, then you likely don't hold him back. However, if the bat ends up profiling as legit, you might be temped to hold him back a few months to give a couple hundred extra ABs.
That's obviously supposed to read *walked 16%* of his AB's.

At one point about a week ago he had more home runs than singles. As it is he has 17 hits, 7 doubles, 5 homers, 7 singles, 6 walks, 38 k's over 71 ab's. honestly their prospect rankings have seemed to fall behind in terms of depth/quality generally (imo).
if you go by the board they still have hamel/vasil #6/#7 in the system ahead of acuna and clifford/vargas not ranked anywhere.
i think it's because they havent done a full profile of the mets system this year, just the "imminent big leaguers" post on the guys in the upper minors. I assume J-Rod only got a rerank because he is top 100. their coverage this year has definitely been more disjointed than i can ever recall.
agreed. i should have used kiley's list. these were his grades back in february, so i would assume acuna/clifford may have notched down to 45's in his midseason update if they dont improve, and j-rod will probably notch up to 50. he had baez as his breakout guy so he's probably also up to at least 45.

there are some guys who show obvious leaps that are justifiable for re-assessment, like showing you can play stateside at 17 after DSL. but guys like clifford and acuna, it's hard to tell what is just noise. who knows if teams are asking them to change specific approach type things knowing it may impact their performance in the short term. much easier to identify guys doing well than assess how far back players are falling.

I doubt anytime soon. He's pitched 12.2 total innings in Brooklyn walking 9 and has already pitched more innings in 2024 than he did in his entire career combined. Big on Jonah Tong but he hasn't been "he should skip Brooklyn" good command wise.

It should be Tidwell but I said the same thing yesterday haha but unless he has some unknown physical issue (I'm not hinting that he does) he almost certainly will go today he last pitched on the 16th.
Joel Diaz was as high as the #9 prospect in the Mets system (2022) for BA, had a solid/decent 2022 considering he was 18 (4.79 FIP over 55.1 innings) and then needed TJ. Very talented kid, not saying he's the next Pedro Martinez but once you get past Tidwell, Sproat, McLean. Tong group I wouldn't confidently put any of the other arms ahead of him (I'm doing 2 things at once so if I forgot another glaring omission, so be it lol).

Acuña's 2b was 108.6mph. batting average getting close to .250, ops closing in on 650. Not great but he's now 1 hot month away from respectable enough numbers to consider a call up (would be a good solution to the MI depth situation too).

i agree but there's no way im aware of to get a rc that's split out from his full year (fg doesnt have minors splits)?
he started slow but 6 xbh in may so far after today and going into today had more hits in may than april. looks like his season has been progressive, if he can put up a month around 110-120 rc i think he becomes an option.
sort of like PCA he may not be ready, but he still may be the best option. id rather give him the shot than iglesias if he's at all ready for it.

The formula for WRC looks like a scary calculus equation.
But, if it treats 'Reached Base on Error' differently than the Batting Average calc, it would help Acuna's case. He gets on base quite a bit via rushed throws from infielders, which looks like an O'fer in BA. Once he's on fist base, it's a given that he's stealing. That's Runs Created.
the thing i look at first with any hitter is XBH. if a guy gets a lot of XBH his bat will play regardless of anything else. XBH = rbis bc if any non vogelbach runner is on, they are usually scoring on any XBH.
the 2nd thing i look at is k rate/walk rate/batting average bc that combo tells you how good they are at contact.
guys who steal bases like acuna the latter obviously plays up bc they can turn singles/walks into xbh for themselves at least (though the rbi factor diminishes).
ops is my preferred all in one proxy over RC. at least in season.
so putting acuna's season so far through all that:
1. 12 XBH in just under 200 abs is ok. that's pacing towards about 40 on a full year, which is respectable for a MI but not great. lindor had 66 last year for reference. andres gimenez is perhaps a better comp for the type of player im hoping acuna becomes and he had 47 last year in 600 abs. since XBH are so small sample, you can see how 1 game can make a big difference. if he hits for a cycle today his pace gets closer to 50+ over a season and that is a very good number for a MI/top order hitter.
2. his k-rate at 18% is solid. gimenez as a pro is 19.5% on his career, lindor 16%. either way strong k rate for a league debut.
3. walk rate is 5% which is same as gimenez, not ideal but typical of younger players. lindors has gone from 8% to 11% over his career, though this year it's just 6.8%. for young players i sort of expect a non-ideal walk rate and if they have a good walk rate that is gravy. it's not the worst negative but it is a good positive bc walk rates are durable league to league on promotions.
4. batting average at .243 is lower than ideal, but his babip is just .289 so i expect there is some bad luck in there since he's so fast. when he was crushing AA in texas and hiting .315 his BABIP was .381, which is unsustainably high, but i would guess over his career he settles in around 310-320 which is on the higher end of league avg and would bring his BA up to like .270.
knowing what his contact/exit velo numbers are in AAA would help determine how unlucky acuna has been, and if they are good he is probably due for a month where everything falls in and his batting average jumps up by 20-40 points.
gimenez career babip is .310 and his career ba is .265. he skipped AAA altogether because of the covid year canceling the minors and debuted at 21 years old off a AA season where he ops'd .695. his ba that year was .250 and he he'd hit 36 xbh in just under 500 plate appearances. very acuna-esque.
it would not take very much in acuna's play over the next few weeks to consider "shot gun" promoting him, possibly before he's fully ready as gimenez was, because the roster need is there. mcneil hasnt been great and they have no backup SS. though if i saw data that made me think he's struggling under the hood and was better served in AAA that may change my mind.

His OBP is bottom 10 in the league (out of 130 players), there is no realistic way to suggest he's beating out so many errors that his OBP isn't terrible. Jose Reyes (famously didn't walk and an even faster runner than Acuna) posted a .330 OBP in AAA (as a 20 year old), Acuna's is currently .287. Juan Pierre (a 70-80 runner) had a .379 minor league OBP, he basically skipped AAA but his AA OBP was.376. There aren't too many good offensive players who are fast so they are good, but they don't get on base.
OPS on it's own is close to useless when not comparing it to the rest of the league. It's like citing a Colorado player (pre humidor) and ignoring where he plays completely

There really isn't a single area Acuna is putting up good offensive numbers outside of steals, which we know are dependent on getting on base. Won't steal many bases for the Mets if his OBP is sub .290

Not that you or everyone else doesn't already know this but this is his first 200 PA in AAA. I'm hoping that the next 200 sees a lot better results. We've all seen slow starts to a new level before a breakout so hoping this is one.
He also just turned 22 in March. There's no reason to think this other than age, but I'm still holding out hope the power can develop some. I know he's never going to be a 30- guy, but 15 would be nice. But I'll take any improvement over McNeil right now.
Expectations have been tempered for me since that trade, though.

And to be clear, and I think I've been clear about this... I've stated he *hasn't* been very good so far, I haven't said he can't/won't heat up. His May hasn't been particularly great by any number anybody wants to use, traditional or advanced. Maybe the next 4 weeks look different.

Parada was once a top draft prospect who has regressed as a hitter and stagnated as a defender in pro ball. When he was drafted, it was thought that he’d hit enough to be a decent big leaguer even if he had to move out from behind the plate, but that isn’t happening. Perozo is a low-ball power-hitting catcher who hasn’t been able to hit his way out of Low-A in three seasons there.

Klassen is interesting because there is nothing in his college performance that indicated anything remotely like he has begun his professional career.

That's asinine. He was a top 60 prospect in the 3 big baseball rankings pre-23. He's fallen off, no question. And the Mets have a deep farm. But that's a bit overboard. He's not even 23. de Oca, who is a reliever with a 10.8 MLB career ERA is on there. He will be 29 when next season starts.

there is no world where 28 year old bryces de montes out with TJS should be ranked ahead of parada. that is insanity.
I never really liked the FG minors rankings. Prefer BA, BP, ESPN, Athletic, Pipeline all more. They take a different perspective at times which is nice but they seem to be off more often than not.

ive always liked how FG corresponded to grades more than some of the others, the pipeline tool grades are always a little weird. generally i take the median of all them but i always thought FG was in the top tier. now i think i veer more towards Kiley/Law. BP is good too, but i seem to only subscribe to their stuff in july if/when big trades happen.

this is getting awfully close to when jdg exited like 5 games in a row in the 1st/2nd innings and they kept saying he was fine. there is definitely something there with Senga that is murky medically (hence the TJS/IL provision in his contract).
btw i had never read that option in full - "2028 Option kicks in if the player has Tommy John surgery or a right elbow injury that keeps him on the IL for 130+ days"

Butto has been named International League Pitcher of the week for the week of May 20-26! Butto made two starts for Syracuse against SWB this past week, only allowing four hits, two walks, and NO runs through 11IP, as well as striking out 11 batters.
A few adjustments have paid off for Mets prospect Luisangel Acuña.
On May 1, Acuña’s batting average was .216.
Now, it’s .254.
A few weeks ago, Triple-A coaches J.P. Arencibia and Collin Hetzler worked with Acuña on tightening his swing and lowering his leg kick. They also wanted him to stay back more instead of trying to go out and get pitches. It worked. Acuña, a right-handed batter, is racking up more hits — and hitting more balls in the air to left field.
“He got off to a rough start,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. “It says a lot for a young player playing on the Triple-A level that is going through struggles and they continue to fight and now we’re seeing results.
“There’s been some adjustments with him, but basically sticking to his routine. It is important for him to go through those struggles and get through it and fight through it. You hate to see players get to the big-league level and never have to face adversity. So, for him to start getting results as of late is good to see.”
Acuña, the brother of Atlanta star Ronald Acuña Jr. (out for the season because of an ACL injury), is on the Mets’ 40-man roster. He has split time this season at shortstop, second base and center field, playing all three positions well, according to evaluators.
he would be a very useful player on the big league roster with his defensive versatility should they move on from any of their OF'ers via trade. McNeil could kick to RF part time with marte and Acuna could play some 2b while backing up Lindor and playing some CF. i assume in the next few weeks iglesias will get a call up whenever they decide how to adjust roster around baty/vientos, but would think if acuna can continue making good adjustments a late june/early july call up could be there for him.

The Mets have used a bunch of relievers and don’t need to add anyone to their 40-man roster yet. But when the time arises again, it’s worth keeping in mind right-hander Eric Orze. He’s an under-the-radar arm impressing some evaluators, who love his whiff rate. Baseball Savant has tracked 414 of Orze’s pitches. Batters have swung and missed at 66 of them. That’s good for 15.9 percent, which is top among the dozen Mets minor-leaguers who have thrown at least 400 tracked pitches via Baseball Savant.
Orze’s splitter is his best pitch, but he increased velocity on his four-seam fastball to 95 mph and improved command of his slider. In 24 1/3 innings, the 26-year-old has a 3.70 ERA with 33 strikeouts and 15 walks (over his last 17 innings, he has walked just five).

The Scoop: Acuña hasn’t gotten off to a great start in Triple-A, but there’s still the building blocks of a good MLB player. He hits the ball harder than his .099 isolated power seems to indicate. He can really rotate when he rips a swing. But he hits a ton of ground balls. His power is generally to right center field, but until he gets more comfortable pulling the ball in the air, his bat-to-ball skills and adequate power are going to be masked. (JC)

Mets top prospect Jett Williams required a second cortisone injection in his right wrist due to continued soreness. The team is waiting for that to take effect. If it doesn't help, the Mets could begin exploring other options, such as surgery.

Just to be 100% transparent, a player told me he "heard" from another player it was a hamate. I wouldn't bet my life that's what's going on. That's just what I heard second hand.

no 2 cases are the same, the fact that they are trying a 2nd cortisone shot would seem to imply this isnt an obvious surgical case. or maybe jett prefers to not do the surgery unless it's last resort? the surgeon is undoubtedly an accomplished ortho at HSS so this likely isn't a mets training staff thing.
on a quick search like any surgery, there are potential complications. obviously no idea if this is even the type of procedure he'd need but no surgery is without risks.

just to be clear im not nitpicking any element of the rumor of whatever the injury is. just pointing there are like 100 variables nobody knows except the people in the training room making the decision. on surgical stuff i think we can feel confident in HSS giving the team/player the best possible info and recommendations.

good point - and i guess to my point if mcneil went IL (or whoever) you'd still have iglesias on bench in the Baty roster spot.
im just glad acuna has himself in the conversation because id personally be shopping someone like marte already and willing to move on if someone else is willing. he'd be my eduardo escobar/brian mccann right now, and hopefully since he looks decent you could get something useful for him. and if you can move marte then mcneil can play more of an all over role, and then there's room on the roster to call up acuna and play him a lot at 2b which would probably upgrade 2 positions defensive (RF/2b).
i wonder if there is a baseball trade to make with marte where you can flip him with cash for an experienced but expensive closer in a desperation eat $ move like gott last year (if red sox were out id say kenley?).
maybe something like marte + cash for old friend rafael montero? houston offense is struggling, marte could play some LF for them.
i dont believe we can split that, but my guess is those ratios have changed in this hot streak as the result of whatever adjustment he made.

Him showing signs of life is a great great sign for us, and needed given the situation with Gilbert and Williams.
As far as promotion goes, there's no point right now. Like you say, let's see him play good at AAA for another 4-6 weeks and maybe post all-star break we can talk about the big club.

To have the third highest GB% and 3rd lowest LD% means you've been pretty awful for most of the season. Billy Hamilton was a legitimate 80 runner and he had a 42% GB%, 23.1% LD at the big league level (a real slap hitter no less), Acuna at AAA is currently at 57.1% GB and 16.1%, those are both horrendous numbers. Hit for another 3-4 weeks, prove it.

Him showing signs of life is a great great sign for us, and needed given the situation with Gilbert and Williams.
As far as promotion goes, there's no point right now. Like you say, let's see him play good at AAA for another 4-6 weeks and maybe post all-star break we can talk about the big club.

There should be no rush. If he's up in 4 weeks (July 29th) he'd still have roughly 60 MLB games available to him through the end of the season. I'd like to see some of the young players as well but when they are ready, not because they had a hot 10 game span that followed an awful first 6 weeks.
pulling the ball a lot more than the rest of his career and less up the middle than last year specifically. interestingly in 2022 it looks like he had a really similar line his first year in A+, but by the time he went up to AA that same year he was hitting way more line drives/flyballs despite it being a tougher level, while also going the other way a lot more.
i dont dive all that deep into the swing decisions/launch angle waters but when i see differences like this i expect that it's all part of the cat/mouse game that comes with moving up levels and making adjustments - which then continues perpetually in the big leagues forever as pitchers adjust back.
my guess this year (just a guess) is that in the last few weeks he's somehow made adjustments that have gotten him back to pulling the ball less on the ground and hitting more line drives/fly balls.

no disagreement there if we are talking about a deserved call up where they need to "make room" for him. i.e. moving mcneil to a utility role full time - Acuna's performance isn't there yet but like you said in 3-4 weeks it may be because if he keeps doing what he's doing he'll be hitting .300+ by then.
depending on however much they buy into the adjustments he just made though, unlike 2 weeks ago they may now think he could keep his head above water at least if he were called up. PCA has now done that for a month and produced at a 3 win pace (mostly for his defense) even though he didnt show all that many signs of looking ready at AAA. that was an injury promotion. i think acuna has gotten himself into that category of depth option though if the big club has an injury (or a trade materializes).
Until he's hitting less ground balls, and more line drives his offensive profile is not going to be an MLB starter (or at least a good one). You won't find many successful MLB players with GB/LD% that high/low.
It's basically Yandy Diaz, who has a completely different profile hitting rockets (.144 ISO) near the league lead in EV nearly every season and walks almost as much as he k's. Fair to say he won't be "Yandy Diaz).

parada in 40 games has 13 xbh and 25 rbis. also having contact issues but that also paces to 50+ xbh over a full year, along with 100 rbis. his rc is 90 despite presently hitting .213. iso up to .161.
both are drawing walks while k'ing a ton, and interestingly both are putting the ball in the air a lot (both have very low ground ball rates). so their issues seem squarely to be contact frequency, though when they make contact they are each at least flashing the pop that got people excited in the first place. so i would assume the EV is solid/good for both and if they can make more frequent contact they will also make more XBH.

I've been checking in to the SYR Mets lately. They're honestly more fun than the big club. I check the box scores and sometimes listen the the radio play-by-play if I'm doing something on the PC.
Vasil got hit hard last night and he's having a rough couple of weeks at AAA.
Acuna had a nice game on Wednesday night, both at the plate and at second base (made a diving catch of a liner to stop a BUF rally).
Acuna bats lead-off, and following him in the order are Rhylan Thomas, Rylan Bannon, Jake Ritter and Trayce Thompson. That's a pretty good first five in the order.
i think both fans and "industry" people overrate walks. for more than a decade it seems the consensus has been walks = hits but they dont. if a guy is on 3rd and you walk he doesnt score.
vogelbach was the living embodiment of how walks can skew numbers in a meaningless way. unless bases were loaded or down by 2 in 9th with 2 outs, a vogelbach walk was as useless as it gets since it would take 3 singles or 2 xbh to score him from 1st.
100%. that's why i've always kind of been more bullish on vientos/mauricio types than the prospect writers who thought they had "fatal" flaws in their approach. both always hit for pretty good averages. every young player is going to have to make approach adjustments and most guys tend to get more patient as they get older throughout their careers.
neither was ever going to be Nimmo, but im far less worried about guys who walk less than average but make contact more than average like they were vs the opposite guys who make contact less than average but walk more (like Clifford/Parada).

I don’t think the Mets have a clear “he’s 100% a SS in the system” (big league level) let alone a plus one. J-Rod could stick but he may not, Elian Pena almost certainly won’t, Baro is probably a 3B (he could stick) but plus defensive SS? Don’t see a clear one in the system right now. Jett Williams, J-Rod etc probably averageish as MLB SS defensively if they stick there.

No one on the system at SS with GG defense. Most of our guys at SS might even project off SS. Acuna was probably the best MI defender but he wont be at SS. De Oleo might be considered the best defensively at this point but he's only in FCL. With all that said I don't really trust defensive reporting in the minors as I've seen most of the major outlets are wrong. Alvarez being the biggest miss recently.

Off the top of my head for May I would say it's been Ronald Hernandez and Nick Morabito for Player. Pitcher probably Sproat or Tidwell.
lindor is a better ss than jeter ever was and jeter played a positive value ss until he was 36.
brandon crawford won a gold glove at 34 a few years ago.
jimmy rollins was playing a good short stop into his mid-30's.
i dont think his offense is going to go below league average - and right now his rc is 100 so even if it is there or slightly below, that will still be a guy with surplus value.
if lindor simply continues staying healthy and playing good D that will actually end up one of the best big contracts in team history, if not the outright best. almost definitely the most productive.
