they are well known to all the Giants area scouts, but have not interacted in person with the Giants position coaches.

The fact that Coach Andre Patterson spent time with him this weekend and he was signed is encouraging.

Played some fullback too. Hmmm that's interesting. 4.90 speed I could see him crushing in to the line blocking or Refrigerator Perry styl on the goal line or Push Tush back.

The Giants are clearly trying to bolster their inside pass rush, whether it's with Rogers, Chatman, or maybe a veteran after final cuts. I'm sure they are also hoping to get some inside pass rush from Davidson this season.

Definitely a guy benefits from leverage, and with his quickness, it makes it difficult for him to be blocked. Could be a good 3-tech.

He was a very controversial players on BBI and among draftniks. A lot of people - myself included - thought his size was going to be a real problem in the NFL.
we knew that bolstering the DL (especially at 3 tech)
Dave on the UWS : 5/12/2024 12:59 pm : link
was going to be a problem with how the draft fell.
Rogers and this guy, have some traits that could help with that issue. Schoen has done a good job at adding talent in the areas that were problems coming into this off season.

Now its up to the coaching staff to get these young players to deliver.
we need a verstile edge vet defender
bigbluewillrise : 5/12/2024 1:20 pm : link
1. can play early run downs and play it well and set an edge
2. can rush the passer from the outside a bit to hedge against azeez
3. can kick inside on pass rush downs and rush the passer from DT
4. be a veteran presence/leader in the locker room

we need to find one of these guys before training camp.

he doesnt have to play a lot of snaps, theres 20-25% of snaps to be had out there imo.

my guy was dupree, but hopefully we can find someone else. he would have been a great signing.

I don't feel like digging up 10 year old threads, but I remember being flummoxed by those opinions. At a minimum, John Randle was a comp of a lighter DT that disrupted because of his athleticism.

Hell, Spags would put Tuck in at DT routinely on passing downs.

Also nothing in Donald's tape from Pitt showed him having any issue with bigger OL. He was absolutely dominant.

The Giant Insider Podcast and Newspaper
@GiantInsider

Giants have signed rookie DT Elijah "Baby Bison" Chatman to the roster after an impressive rookie camp tryout.
Funny, Chatman was the one DL that coach Bryan Cox seemed to have an eye on when the linemen were doing drills in front of me. Then, short time later, Daboll strolled over, watched Chatman a bit and wrote something down on paper. Not a surprise that Chatman is signed to get a look at camp, He was the only DL that was explosive and powerful.

I'd love to see him make it on the Giants, and who knows if he'll be a DT or FB, if he becomes a FB he could haunt some of the teams in the NFCE (kind of like a player like Boston Scott was against the Giants for several seasons).
I like his hunger to play.
Clearly they’re looking for

A lightinng quick 3 tech to put next to Dex on pass rush downs.

Payne coming in for a visit fits this bill, as does our UDFA Rogers.

They likely recognize that all attention is going to go to Dex, Burns and KT. Just add someone else in that can beat a single block and get to the QB fast.

That was at a time when offensive linemen were much lighter...
Quote:
According to Elias Sports Bureau research, the average weight of starting offensive linemen was 254.3 pounds in 1970. It jumped to 276.9 by 1990, but the largest increase in poundage would come in the following 10 years. A decade later, the average O-line starter checked in at 309.4 pounds.

Overlook the size issue which held back all of the other NFL teams and focus on his tape. Long shot but let's hope we get lucky
re: small
bc4life : 5/12/2024 10:08 pm : link
The 280 is not stretched out over a 6'2-3" frame. On the one hand, I would think this may help him re: leverage. The arm length may be an issue but on the interior with a quick getoff he cold negate that.

He could also play special teams and if he can play FB too. He has a legitimate shot. At a minimum, I think he can make the practice squad.

And the motor is good...

Denico Autry is an interesting comparable
Blue Dog : 5/13/2024 1:33 am : link
Autry played both 3 and 5 techniques in Bowen's D the last few years and excelled. Also was an UDFA way back in 2014. Autry is taller at 6'4.5'' but was a similar weight coming in at just 273lbs. His arms are even shorter than Chatman's. He did better in the agility drills but much worse in the bench and slightly worse in the 40. The jumps were similar.
