The helmet and gold pants make it pop! Nice to have something outside the box for once.
Yes!! And I'd much rather they go with something that's part of our history rather than do something like the terrible new Broncos/Falcons (& many other) jerseys.
Huge lifelong Giants fan and I know him personally! Heās killing time on BBI and procrastinating at work at this very moment! Everybody follow him on Twitter! BBIās own @WTHelmets - ( New Window )
Being a 3rd generation fan starting with my grandfather dating back to the 30ās. My father born in ā49 telling me stories of the Giants greats of the late 50ās and 60āsā¦then watching the Giants with him my entire life until his passing in 2010 (3/4 superbowls) I wish both were here to see these. Respect and honor to all of the old time Giants fans and players. We all bitch and moan about this organization because we want them to winā¦..but for me the Giants are forever intertwined into my family legacy. Iām of a dying breedā¦. Orignal New England NY Giants fans. New England used to have a huge Giants followingā¦.its slowly dwindled due to the Patriots success and Giants futility but the old timers still stand proud!! Iām 48 but my legacy is that of an old timer!
I will definitely be buying a couple of these!
for these? I read that yesterday, but not sure it's actually correct. Anyone know?
Not sure if they got rid of those or the legacy, but it would have to be one of those two.
My guess is color rush since it is 5 years old. The legacy is only 2 years old, and FWIW they still have not lost wearing those (3-0-1)
I did notice in a few press releases early on this off-season they featured the āGiantsā letter helmet on the regular blue shell, which they used to wear with the color rush before the helmet rule change. Would be weird to do that with a helmet they no longer useā¦
Wondering if there is more news coming about uniforms? I hope so as Iād hate to see the color rush out of rotationā¦
I haven't seen anything about what games. I guessed the Cowboys on TNF at home and was thinking maybe the Steelers on MNF (With Pittsburgh also wearing a throwback)
I wish they didn't just replace the all white throwbacks though.
The NFL has some pretty stupid rules with the uniforms. Remember back when they only allowed 1 helmet per team because of the concussion issues? Yet college teams like Oregon could have 10 different helmets?
Teams should have at least 5 different uniforms as long as they don't look just like the opponent.
Eric, I happen to agree with you, the history aspect of this makes these cool for a year.
The reactions though, show you what NYG is up against this year. If you think people are mad at uniforms, wait until what happens if this team is 2-6 in October.
fans visit Larry's site and look at the year-to-year changes. The basic concepts of this uniform - helmet style, jersey colors, socks, pant color were used for a long time.
of what they really looked like. Just glad it isn't permanent. But time wise this is a special year for us. How many teams have a 200 year anniversary? Very few. Go Giants! Celebrate it to the max. Show the NFL our proud tradition. Despite our feelings lately it's a gloried franchise. I grew up in New England when the Giants were our team too. The Patriots came and I never waivered . Go Giants! Still my team.
helmet and changed the maize to red. The jerseys look like the Montreal Canadiens as others have noted.
Iām not a big fan of the helmet and jersey, but they are ok. The pants are another story.
The red pattern on the blue is based on the extra layer of leather that stood out from the background leather. That's why Michigan has that same look, based on their old helmet.
Although I would have tweaked the pants to make them a bit more modern. I get what they were trying to do though. I just hate that the white color rush could be the lost for this.
Whether fans like the throwback uniforms or want to literally throw them back, it's all a matter of personal taste.
Uniform preferences don't make you a good fan or a bad fan, no matter who says what on Twitter.
Imagine setting up a Twitter account and on your profile you write "#1 Daniel Jones hater"? That's the mindset we're dealing with here.
To quote you from earlier... "So what?"
Liking or not liking the uniforms doesn't mean you don't respect the Giants or their history, or that you're a good or bad fan. And suggesting that one person's twitter profile represents "the mindset" of people who don't like the unis is just silly.
Although I would have tweaked the pants to make them a bit more modern. I get what they were trying to do though. I just hate that the white color rush could be the lost for this.
The purpose of a throwback uniform is not to make it look more modern. That defeats the intended purpose.
Not to miller a thread, but yes, putting something like that in your Twitter profile makes you a bad fan. It also makes you a bad human being. (Or at least, someone with a broken moral compass).
Isnāt that the true representation? Or a three quarter length?
It baffles me that many truly have no respect for the pioneers before us. I used to love the old school GB and Bears uniās. Always was disappointed we never participated. Just look at the movie Chariots of Fire and the fashion, look at Ralph Lauren and many of his rugby throwbacks, the winged footā¦. Paying homage to the generations before us is the ultimate show of respect and binds us together. I grew up with the Giants Logo on the helmet but I much prefer the ny. Seeing the old pics of Frank Gifford, YA, Rosevelt Brown, etc in the NY helmet always made me want to see LT in that helmet at least 1.
TrueBlueLarry's website - Does anyone have a link to it? Ā
We are just so used to blue and white and don't even realize how big red was for the first few decades of the team. Even if it is "objectively" ugly (which I don't think it is), it has subjective beauty.
At least there is personality. As opposed to everyone wearing some version of black.
Anyway, the first thing that came to mind were the old Montreal Alouttes jerseys. Maybe from the 1980s?
Bottom line: these uniforms have personality. Embrace it. Enjoy it.

wonder if CTE is contagious and some of y'all stood next to Aaron Rodgers recently.
Yes, the color scheme is ridiculous compared to modern uniforms but this isn't a Nike sneaker drop for a new rap single, it's a freaking throw back to the type of uniforms worn in the 1930's. Who cares if it ugly, it's purpose is to celebrate the fact that fans have been able to enjoy Giants' Football for a century. This is about Mel Hein, Emlen Tunnell, Andy Robustelli, Y.A. Tittle, etc... If that doesn't excite you and you can't get past the freaking color scheme then go to fucking hell and start rooting for the Cowboys. You would fit in well with their bandwagon fanbase
RE: RE: Wan'Dale ain't a fan of these craptastic unis either it seems...lol Ā
when my grandfather was younger. I find it very cool to go back to an era when a lot of other peopleās older relatives were younger and watched them play in these. Some may have even started their fandom.

Just another idiotic decision by this once proud franchise. Who cares if this is what they used to wear? There is a good reason smart people got rid of these a long time ago - they look like a laughably bad vaudeville troupe.
Looks like something Chris would have his jockeys wear. Ā

+1
Even though I agree, I'm ok with them wearing these unis ONCE---just once at a home game---since it's the team's centennial season (I can't believe I'm saying this, lol).
lol. At least we're not the only ones to break it to you E, lol. I'll throw you a history guys a bone: if it makes you happy to see these in the team's centennial season, the ok. But just once and just this season!
P.S. We're seeing these twice this season (home and away) Eric?
But I do not like the helmet I would have really loved the New York Football Giants Skyline logo on the helmet, that would have been sick, helmets are way too plain but the odeā to the tradition of this 100 year franchise is awesome and I will be buying a jersey for sure, donāt know what player to get might have to customize it with my own name

I don't know... it's probably in the press release.
I actually don't get caught up in this stuff Everyone keeps saying the Giants 80s throwbacks are amazing, but they don't look the same. The color is off or something. Larry probably can pinpoint it. But if you put on a game with LT and Carson and Simms, the uniforms aren't "right."
What I like about this is it shoves down the throat of fans that the Giants actually have a history that pre-dates the Super Bowl era, and those years were instrumental in the history of the NFL and the team.
and honestly, it's quite an audacious look for the normally conservative Giants, and I welcome it.
And like Eric has stated above several times: IT'S HISTORY.
When you break it down, most of the uniform comes from the 1932-33 seasons. The winged helmet comes from 1937-47 (though, the Giants wore two different wings, this one dates to 1939-47). I guess they didn't like the look of the spider stripe helmet on the contemporary shell. The wing is much easier to replicate.
I think it's a very cool look.
And for those clamoring "the Giants are Big Blue, they shouldn't wear red" just take a look at the Gridiron Uniform Database link he posted, from 1925-1952 red was the Giants primary color. From 1953-56 they wore white at home most of the time. Big Blue didn't happen until 1957.

The 1980s-90s jerseys had a change in the tone of blue. The 1980-88 was slightly darker, the 1989-1999 were a little brighter. I think the ones the Giants wear now as the Legacy Uniforms is close to the 1989-1999 version.

If you think theyāre awesome then theyāre awesome! End of discussion.
We are a team that seems stuck in the past, with our crappy stadium, and musty-looking old uniforms. 100 years old is cool but these uniforms just don't do our history justice.
Just like this team is going to underwhelm in 2024, the new/old uniform is a disappointment.
Thanks. That makes sense... something seemed "off" with the shade. Obviously, the actual physical contours of the helmet have changed with improved helmet technology.

This has to be awesome for you personally.
It is. All the work I've done over the years researching for the GUD seeing something out of the past come to life is awesome.
I'd always hoped after the Steelers, Packers and Bears had gone deep into their history for throwback uniforms that the Giants would do the same one day. Like I said, they're a conservative organization, so something like this is a probably a stretch of their normal comfort zone. I'm glad they took a shot, and in my opinion, have done a really good job. I think these are going to look great on the field.
You want to go 1980s old school... get this facemask Ā
do they even look at videos from when Mel Hein played (he's in the ring of honor by the way).
These are very cool, especially the top and helmet. Might have to get one.
Pre-season is a time to experiment. Why not do it with jerseys? I'd have NO PROBLEM with that whatsoever. It'd actually be a way to get people to tune in a little more.
I love history. Some things should stay in the past, though, like these hideous clown suits
Thank you Greg. I don't get the whole I have to see a uniform to appreciate history thing. They're ugly. Simple. I can appreciate Steve Owens, Mel Hein, Frank Gifford, Emlen Tunnell, etc. without having to see these prison getups.
The pants are awful, but like Eric says, that's history baby. Celebrating the long ago past in anything means coming to grips with browns and tans -- once everywhere; now nowhere.
I don't really have an opinion one way or the other about the century red. I think it's a cool nod to the past and creates some excitement but is it necessary? Not really.
Wish they would just go full time 80s/early 90s unis and call it a day.

but they may even go with these at some point too...
I donāt especially like these either, but they are immensely better than the Montreal Canadiens/Michigan mashups. Red pants instead of brown alone is a huge improvement
Are the 80s Simms/Taylor glory years where Red was a nice, minimal ACCENT color. Use white pants, and replace the NY with the old GIANTS logo on the newer, metallic blue helmet and call it a day.
Stop with all this RED. You're NOT the fucking Montreal Canadians.
100% the best throwback uniās of any team! I canāt wait to see these!! Have they announced the games they will be wearing these? I want to be there!
I love the red jerseys! They didnāt get much love either! Not sure that fans understand this is our history and not just some stab at a different look! Give me a different year throwback each year! Iām all for it!

John Mara could save a drowning Boxer puppy and some of you would lambaste him because you prefer Dachshunds. Christ, lighten up - or at least learn how to compartmentalize your frustrations.
I hate uniforms where the numbers have outlines/piping around them.
It looks a lot classier / cooler WITHOUT that 1970s Oakland A's piping bullshit. I know it was there in the Parcells years but I find those uniforms uninspiring.
better than the one red stripe down the middle which I hate. I like the Jerseys also a really nice throw back. BUT those pants man. Isn't there any other pants in our history that we can honor hahaha
Can't disagree, but since today's players will never go back to a cage that robust, I'd settle for the rarest of the rare, the NOPO-DW...aka the Brad Van Pelt.

Agreed, this choice is hideous. Right up there with the Steelers bee uniform.
about hoping they would go to a 1930s throwback uni and the winged helmet. Iām surprised they did it. This isnāt the look I wouldāve chosen. But this fits in well with the ācolor rushā concept and certainly pays tribute to the history of the team.
I agree that the tan pants donāt seem to me to fit with the jersey and helmet, but thatās a quibble.
Do I want to see them go to this permanently? Hell no. Am I glad to see it now and then? Hell yes.
Thereās a 1930s look with blue and white running down the sleeves. I actually like that one better. If they issued one of those I might buy it. But for 100th anniversary jersey I have no complaints here.
The 49ers make red jerseys with gold pants work. These uniforms don't. Perhaps it's the 49ers gold helmets that make the difference.
These helmets have no number or Giants logo on it. Keeping track of whose helmet is whose should be a lot of fun. Not to mention trying to identify players in photos or on TV. It would make a nice motorcycle helmet.
Hahaha! With all the bitching going on in this thread you'd think the Giants were going with these! There late 70s uniforms are the truly ugly ones.
It's probably a little known fact that Andy Robustelli, who was the Giants D.O. of Football Ops, designed these himself. He wanted the Giants to shake off their image of being a stuffy, old organization stuck in the past and thought a modern look would help.
Fortunately, they didn't last long.
Except for 1975, which I think was an all around terrible year for pretty much everyone, especially giants uniforms, I like all of the Giants uniforms, including the various alternates and throwbacks. Personally I slightly prefer the late 80's, but I like the 60's and the 2000's refresh. I like these new throwbacks too.
One thing I actually like about the 1975-79 uniforms Ā

Adding: The 1930s jerseys had long sleeves and look better that way.
Uniforms in the 1930's were like this. Have you seen the Packers uniforms from back then, Eagles, Steelers? They've all worn them in recent years.
For what this is commemorating, I think they did a great job. I wouldn't spend money on this jersey, but they got all of the details correct. Curious about what the endzone design will be for the two games they wear them. Assuming they are both home games.
I don't understand the concept behind giving a blue, red, and white striped jersey....gold pants.
Like, how does gold go with red, white, and blue? Did Hellen Keller come up with that design concept? The gold pants just are "Giant-ish" in the least, and gold certainly doesn't go well with red, white, and blue. It just doesn't look right.
that's what all teams wore in the 1920s and 1930s, colored pants started showing up in the mid-late 30s.
What the NFL looked like in 1933. - ( New Window )
Ok, tan not gold. Even still, tan doesn't go with red, white, and blue.
Than modern football uniforms. Itās a peculiar marriage of styles
I hope someone wears matching red long sleeves with that jersey, itāll look better.
The biggest problem with modern NFL jerseys is they don't really have sleeves anymore, they just have shoulder caps. That's why TV numbers are worn on the shoulder, and some teams (Bengals) don't even have them anymore.
The posters above who said the long sleeved jerseys from the 1920s looked like rugby shirts are correct, essentially that's what they were - long sleeved wool sweaters (which must have been miserable to play football in early in the season on a hot day).
The first significant change in jersey design came with the switch to durene, which is a much lighter fabric and remained the base material for most football jerseys going into the 1970s. The Giants made the change to durene in 1934. The change in material also changed the way the teams looked as striping left teh body of the jersey and moved almost exclusively to the sleeves - football jerseys began to adopt what most of us see as their typical look.
For the Giants, this throwback jersey really is an attempt to trace back to their early roots, a long sleeved wool rugby-style shirt. Not an easy thing to do on a 21st century material with a minimalist cut (body forming without sleeves). Personally, I think it looks good, but I look at it through a different lense as I've spent the better part of 12 years looking at football photos in newspapers from the 1920s, 1930s & 1940s for the Gridiron Uniform Database. I appreciate all the work that went into it.
The origin of NFL throwback uniforms goes back to 1993 when the Jets commemorated the 25th anniversary of SBIII.
The following year was the NFL's 75th anniversary and almost the entire league wore throwback uniforms to some point in their histories. the results, while not always historically accurate, were very interesting. The Cardinals, Bears and Steelers wore uniforms going back to the 1920s and 1930s, hence their tan pants - they are historically accurate. For that year the Giants wore 1962 uniforms (the league made them wear white pants with the blue jerseys for some unknown reason). 1994 NFL 75th anniversary throwback uniforms - ( New Window )

Thanks for the explainer Larry, appreciate the explanation and your site. Looks like a lot of research has gone into it and Iām gonna spend some time on there.
Personally I think these are cool. Very different than anything else in the league from a throwback perspective and they pop!, especially the awesome helmet.
Opinions being what they are, if you canāt get into this from the historical perspective, yeah even the tan pantsā¦. In a few years there will probably be some hideous black & blue infused kit to spend your money on.
My major complaint - the colors are too vibrant for the design Ā

I wonder what two games they will wear them in?
I like them.
Yes!! And I'd much rather they go with something that's part of our history rather than do something like the terrible new Broncos/Falcons (& many other) jerseys.
Damnit now I have to buy one lol.

It's the 100th year of the team. Going with something from the 1980s would have been boring.

Really, really, really isn't enough! Multiply that by about 100.
Not sure if they got rid of those or the legacy, but it would have to be one of those two.
My guess is color rush since it is 5 years old. The legacy is only 2 years old, and FWIW they still have not lost wearing those (3-0-1)

Yeah, you really are a casual..
I think they'll go back to the 80s/90s unis eventually. This latest uni is another money grab by the good folks from Giantsland.
I haven't seen anything about what games. I guessed the Cowboys on TNF at home and was thinking maybe the Steelers on MNF (With Pittsburgh also wearing a throwback)

I think they did an awesome job representing the start of the NFL and those early championships.

So?
The NFL has some pretty stupid rules with the uniforms. Remember back when they only allowed 1 helmet per team because of the concussion issues? Yet college teams like Oregon could have 10 different helmets?
Teams should have at least 5 different uniforms as long as they don't look just like the opponent.

They are tan, not gold.
But how does that promote the 100th year anniversary?
It's been done. Uniforms that were worn for a decade. There are nine other decades of team history.

That's your opinion.
Eric, I happen to agree with you, the history aspect of this makes these cool for a year.
The reactions though, show you what NYG is up against this year. If you think people are mad at uniforms, wait until what happens if this team is 2-6 in October.

Look at the responses here. One of the most common is, āLetās just go back to the throwbacks of the 80s-90s permanently!ā

Well said sir.

The red pattern on the blue is based on the extra layer of leather that stood out from the background leather. That's why Michigan has that same look, based on their old helmet.

Little known fact: The Giants primary color was red for their first three decades.
Yes. I get that. But itās been done and, this is their 100th season.
And, again, people are really getting up in arms about a uniform combo that will be worn twice in the year?
We are just so used to blue and white and don't even realize how big red was for the first few decades of the team. Even if it is "objectively" ugly (which I don't think it is), it has subjective beauty.
At least there is personality. As opposed to everyone wearing some version of black.
Anyway, the first thing that came to mind were the old Montreal Alouttes jerseys. Maybe from the 1980s?
Bottom line: these uniforms have personality. Embrace it. Enjoy it.

And some on here.
Love this uniform. Love the history.
I have been hoping the Giants would go 1930s at some point. The 100th year is the perfect time.

We are a team that seems stuck in the past, with our crappy stadium, and musty-looking old uniforms. 100 years old is cool but these uniforms just don't do our history justice.

Nice job by the Giants!
These are very cool, especially the top and helmet. Might have to get one.
I think they're headed in that direction again eventually personally.
Thank you Greg. I don't get the whole I have to see a uniform to appreciate history thing. They're ugly. Simple. I can appreciate Steve Owens, Mel Hein, Frank Gifford, Emlen Tunnell, etc. without having to see these prison getups.
Actually, they are stuck with it for five years. They may not wear it after this year, but they won't be able to replace it for 5 years.
The pants are awful, but like Eric says, that's history baby. Celebrating the long ago past in anything means coming to grips with browns and tans -- once everywhere; now nowhere.
Wish they would just go full time 80s/early 90s unis and call it a day.
That's it I could not place it.

I donāt especially like these either, but they are immensely better than the Montreal Canadiens/Michigan mashups. Red pants instead of brown alone is a huge improvement

These helmets have no number or Giants logo on it. Keeping track of whose helmet is whose should be a lot of fun. Not to mention trying to identify players in photos or on TV. It would make a nice motorcycle helmet.
Now that's a classic.
Now that's a classic.
That is right. The Giants are not in Montreal. They are the Hab-nots.
I think they're pretty ugly but obviously fashion is subjective. Happy some of ya'll like like them. The pants are horrendous.
Agree. The blue pants were awesome with the white road jerseys.

For what this is commemorating, I think they did a great job. I wouldn't spend money on this jersey, but they got all of the details correct. Curious about what the endzone design will be for the two games they wear them. Assuming they are both home games.
Like, how does gold go with red, white, and blue? Did Hellen Keller come up with that design concept? The gold pants just are "Giant-ish" in the least, and gold certainly doesn't go well with red, white, and blue. It just doesn't look right.
