The Giants signed quarterback Drew Lock to a one-year deal that guarantees him $5 million this offseason. They also attempted to trade up in the draft to target who most believe was quarterback Drake Maye, according to multiple sources. They even recently claimed quarterback Nathan Rourke off waivers from the New England Patriots.
It has DeVito, 25, back at square one, even if he threw for eight touchdown passes and just three interceptions in nine games.
"Yeah, we're not having this conversation for sure [if I was a third-round pick]. But at the end of the day, like I said, control what you can control, keep the chip on my shoulder, keep working," DeVito said. "Everyone has always been overlooked and it's kind of the same deal I was in last year. I know the offense now and I've been in some situations before. Looking forward to doing it again."

His advanced numbers last year weren't good, but he was also a rookie FA thrust into a tough situation, and his conventional numbers were basically unprecedented from someone with his background. I also really liked the way he managed his two games at home, keeping things clean and hitting the big-time throws when he needed to.
A grand majority of QBs improve in year 2, why not him?
Go out and outplay Jones & Lock.
He is ultra-competitive as well which is very good for the QB room. He will push the others.
With his cost, that's an actual QB you could build a great roster around.
It was a great story in a lost season. I like the kid, I think he has the ability to be a decent backup. I think with all the controversy surrounding Jones they may just want him off the roster to avoid the talk of a 3rd or 4th string player.
Go out and outplay Jones & Lock.
I kind of agree with this. I didn't begrudge DeVito trying to cash in on his 15 mins, but stooping to meet & greets at pizzerias was a bad look.
That said, he's not wrong in his comment about if he had been drafted. I think team brass would have included him more in their season planning had he been a draft pick and played as well as he did. He'll get his chance this summer.
It's a paying gig if he can stick :)
But this is the QB room Schoen and Dabes have left us with.
He could've been completely shut out by their offseason moves, instead he sits at #3 on the depth chart. All things considered, he should consider himself lucky. He is one injury away from being the primary backup.
I don't want to overstate DeVito's chances, but he has shown he can win games in this league, that is different than lots of guys. He was an undrafted rookie who got very few practice reps, why are we so sure he can't get better?
Daboll was impressed with how DeVito recognized coverages and pressure packages on the field, often coming off the field to tell coaches he saw exactly what they were seeing. That is unusual for any rookie QB, but especially so for a guy with so few practice reps.
Personally, I see his ceiling as a backup QB, but there's nothing wrong with that. Teams need good backups, and maybe he develops into something more. Crazier things have happened.

People are sleeping on Lock, he's got a pretty good chance to steel the job from DJ and won't be restricted in the preseason like DJ...
He then had to play at Philly in a nationally televised game.
He wasn't ready for that pressure. He was also a rookie FA starting at QB. Historically, these guys barely last a quarter before looking completely overwhelmed. He threw 8 touchdowns and played efficiently at home.
Do I think he's any kind of answer? No, but I'm surprised at the hostility.

If he had been a 3rd rd pick and played like he did, Giants brass would be talking about giving him more reps, and BBI would be proclaiming him the next franchise QB.
I think he sees the situation pretty clearly; he'll get his shot, and he has to make the most of it when it comes. I don't know why anyone would have a problem with anything he said.

The criticism of DeVito is strange on here. You would think he was Jones in his 5th season the way people talk. He was a rookie, it’s not even about being a first round pick or being undrafted. Rookies QB’s typically struggle to get adjusted to the speed of the game. I thought DeVito looked better than your average rookie last year. There were no Nathan Peterman 5 pick games or disasters of that nature.

that any other team will pick him up. Talent-wise he is no different than lots and lots of guys, he just got lucky in the Giants situation. I don't see him as an NFL QB, maybe try the XFL (or whatever its called)

I’m with you Section331, I feel like we have something with this guy, even if it’s just the primary backup in the end. I honestly felt more comfortable watching the game with DeVito in there than Jones.
That's an NFL career.
Add another 2-3 years fending off young challengers, and it's a great career.

He lost his job after looking below par - but not awful - against a good Saints defense in a tough environment in which the Giants running game and blocking was blown up the entire contest and in which the Giants defense couldn't get off the field.

I would imagine some people are not going to get over his embarrassing off the field stuff with his dopey agent. Hopefully he canned that guy and he can focus on football.
And you are basing that on what?

This. The guy played well enough to come into camp and play for a roster spot. Unfortunately he spent a big part of his rookie season making himself into a cartoon which he now has to undo. He needs to decide if he wants to be an NFL pro or garb some fame and cash while he can. He probably can't do both.
To claw his way up to legit starter in the NFL. DeVito just walked in the door, the opponents he was able to beat were doing their best to beat him.
Elite young QB talents like Hebert, Lawrence and Joe Burrow all stumbled last year and nobody said - "he sucks". Nobody's saying De Vito is in that league, but he's good enough to play and maybe if the "cards line up", to contend for the starting position.

His two meaningless wins cost the giants a possible legacy qb pick.
given the opportunity the kid tried to win that's his job as a QB. Probably could won the Jets game too if he was allowed to pass. I don't get the hate for a guy who tried his ass off?
Totally agree Paulie. I really enjoyed watching him play last year. I remember telling my brother this guy is better than Jones during preseason. I thought he handled the press extremely well and wasn’t a big “distraction” to the team. It was nice to go to work here in Michigan the day after the GB game and people who know I’m a Giants fan were doing the finger purse. It brought some life back into the franchise.
If the OL holds up, giving plays more time to develop, and it executes plays correctly, the offense might be much more complex in 2024. The question is, can any of their QBs run such an offense?
And, is the coaching staff competent in teaching the above? In the first two years of the Daboll era, there is no such indication.

- win 3 straight games, throw 3 TDs in a game, win a prime time game, beat a playoff team and deliver a walk off score for the win and Not to mention win back to back home games
DeVito was 3-3 with 7 TDs to 1 int
In his 6 starts
You can compare that very favorably to virtually any timeframe in Daniel Jones 60 starts here
The QB job should be an open competition. But I fear it won’t be so that ‘no scholarships’ talk…🙄🙄🙄.
Bryce Young was awful last year. Granted, terrible surrounding talent, but he played bad and he looked bad. Young will probably get 3 full years of starts, 3 full years of 1st team practice reps regardless of how he played.
DeVito was not good overall, but let's just say he flashed. He had some moments. Enough that if he were a reasonably high pick, he might be in contention to get some playing time. And Cutlets did that with no first team reps until he was thrown in there.
Meanwhile DeVito may never start another game in the NFL. Back the Giants, there should be an open competition for the starting job. There isn't. And a lot of it has to do with things other than what happens on the field in the NFL.

Here's another one.
DeVito won on MNF against Green Bay in 2023.

Nobody gives a shit about what BBI would be proclaiming, but regardless of whether he was a 3rd round pick or an undrafted free agent, the "Giants brass" wouldn't be doing anything differently. His draft status is ancient history. What matters to the coaches now is what they think of him based on last year. And I don't see why he should have a chip on his shoulder simply because the Giants signed Lock, were looking at first round quality prospects in the draft, and recently added camp fodder. He should be comforted by the fact they didn't add a rookie QB on Day 3. I would view that as a vote of confidence.

Maybe it's just how the reporter framed it, but he comes off as annoyed by the team's offseason pursuits.
His draft status is ancient history? Give me a break. We’re entering year 6 of the Jones error, and his draft status is still an issue. You really d9nt think the Giants would be looking at DeVito differently if they had spent a 3rd rd pick on him? Of course they would. I’m not saying they would have him pegged as a starter, but he would have very much been in the QB discussion.
Absolutely!

Trying to hang on and fending off young challengers seems like the same thing to me, but I’d agree 4-6 years isn’t a bad NFL career for an UDFA QB.
Agree. The separation between our #1 QB and our #4 QB has to be the slimmest in the league. This is a very shallow position where anyone of the 4 could be the best one in the group (despite the fact that there won't be any QB competition for #1).
