What do the other rookies and UDFA's look like, coaching style differences between Bricillo/Johnson and Bowen/Wink, anyone look better than expected? Anyone look worse? Is Aaron Robinson going to play this year?
Anyone feel free to add to the suggestions because some of them may read this.
Is Evan Neal healthy? Probably not…my gut tells me this pick may have been a waste. Hope not though…
I hope the coaches can play the best man at RT based on performance not draft choice. Elumanor is all right by me; don’t know about Neal. He might be too fragile both mentally and physically.
Also think Ezuedu may not be able to be successful on our team if we think he is anything but a guard. I’m hearing he is still be looked at as a tackle. Probably not a good idea.
Lastly, I’m not convinced a new OL Coach is the cure all for all our woes. I think many of our players are just inadequate. Maybe a reset is just what we needed. Maybe we should have drafted that highly touted OG in round 3 instead of Phillips.

Think about this. You want one media source to do a story on Nabers and the others have to report on lesser players? Who decides which site gets the profile that the most people want to read and who gets the one about the backup kicker?

If you want to take business away from a competitor, you have to do something different or better.

I don't mean to call you out on this...you're thoughts are super common here, but man.
Neal was a universally loved prospect, and is still a very young player. He doesn't have a track record of laziness or off field poor choices. He's had injuries both years that have impacted his mobility.
I'm not here to guarantee he's about to be a pro-bowler...I don't know that. But this idea that he's garbage and a total flop is just way too premature. Tired of everyone shitting on this player.

You are fine…no problem here with me.
I guess Sy convinced me of Neal’s balance and feet inadequacies when he evaluated him. He said Neal was often on the ground, which is not good. Apparently, Neal has not progressed in his two years, but I do agree, he has been dinged up each year….which is another concern I have…durability. Did he miss many games in his 4 years at Alabama like he has missed in his 2 years here?

Seems like the major emphasis within #Giants new DC’s Shane Bowen’s defense will be pressuring w/4 and playing coverage behind it.

His comment about him being on the ground was not in terms of his pass blocking.
He may have been his #1, but Sy has been very vocal in cautioning fans to temper their enthusiasm due to his shortcomings. I recall all throughout his rookie season when Neal was struggling big time, Sy would remind us of his balance issues …the same he noticed on his college tape…and was concerned about this. As far as I know, Neal has not proven to Sy that he has gotten over these issues…..so, as a fan, I’m wondering, are his issues something that can be easily correctible with good coaching, or is this a physical limitation defect he will just have to overcome?
And just because Neal was his top rated tackle coming out, this doesn’t guarantee stardom in the NFL. The guys are much bigger, much stronger, much faster. He still has to step up his game….which he pretty much have not done.
Lastly, at this point, I couldn’t care less where Neal was drafted or what his college resume shows….I care about what have you done for me lately and how do you look today?
But I'm not going to allow you to have it both ways. You can't use Sy as a defense of your point of view (which is incorrect because we all know you are talking about his pass blocking, not his run blocking), but run away from the fact that he listed him as the #1 OL in the draft.
Neal has played 22 games. He's been hurt both years, including seriously. Whether he can develop or not is TBD. But the team is clearly not moving on from him.

All of the first 3 OT taken in the draft have struggled. It is a big jump to the pro game, is it frustrating, absolutely but patience is key.

Well, maybe he is better suited to play inside as a guard, where there is less space for him to lose his balance and rely on better footwork. What do you think Neal as a guard since his run blocking skills exceed his pass blocking skills to date?
Dan Duggan

Giants just wrapped up their first open OTA. Will have much more later. Biggest takeaway that matters from a practice in May: It appeared that Daboll was calling the plays. He was stationed directly behind the offensive huddle and communicating with QBs between plays while OC Mike Kafka was stationed about 10-15 yards to his left.

and been injured during some of those games. That's not an excuse, more an explanation. Doesn't mean he's about to embark on a good or great career but being bad those first 20 also doesn't mean he's a bust. Not yet.
For perspective, go look at Jumbo Elliot's first 20 games. Even take a QB like Eli Manning and tell me how he was perceived after 20 games. Better yet tell me about Eli after his first 25-30 games when he was shutout at home in a playoff game and everyone was convinced he would never win big games or never win on the road.
Players get better with reps. The key to finding those steals or good players that sort of come out of nowhere to me, the number one rule--is that guy getting reps and time in the NFL. IF he is, there's reasons for hope. Practice makes perfect. It's an old adage but so true.

My #NyGiants takeaways from first OTA practice:
- Daniel Jones looked smooth moving around on his surgically repaired knee.
- Pump the brakes on any QB controversy. Heard DJ looked has been the sharper QB so far this offseason and Drew Lock's inaccuracy today reinforced it. DJ was QB1 in 7-on-7. Lock QB1 in 11-on-11 (no reps for DJ).
- LT Andrew Thomas took no team reps. Seems like that was the case in earlier OTAs, too. Load management? RT Evan Neal is with the rehab group.
- It's hard to believe that Josh Ezeudu is in line to be the swing OT again after struggling last year. I'd like to let him develop at OG -- compete to start or be the swing OG. But Jermaine Eluemunor was starting at RG and OT Matt Nelson was with the rehab group. Ezeudu next up.
- Why is Jon Runyan at RG instead of LG? First, it could be a day-to-day switch. But my broader understanding is that #Giants look at pairing up LT-LG and RT-RG. They are weaker on the right side, so put the better RG there.
- The DL depth is lacking on paper. I've been saying that since the draft. It was more startling today when Rakeem Nunez-Roches and Jordan Phillips were not here (voluntary). Big opportunity for Jordon Riley.
- No sign of Daniel Bellinger, either. Big spring for him with Darren Waller not here/likely to retire.
- Eric Gray got some RB1 snaps in up-tempo 11-on-11.

Notable difference from last offseason: Last year, the Giants didn't do a single 11-on-11 period in the practices open to the media; it was all 7-on-7.
Today's practice featured a 7-on-7 period early and then extensive 11-on-11 work. Linemen aren't wearing pads, but at least they're getting reps in a game-like setting this spring.

Pointed this out the other day, but relevant here and I think pic confirms it - giants.com now lists him at 315lbs, his combine weight was 338lbs. Normally you can't really trust the website numbers but a few who have seen him have made comments about his weight at this point.
Well, I guess the coaches are either giving up on him being a guard or they feel we need more tackles and we already have enough guards.
Did you read the notes above????
Our starting LT sat out. Our primary swing-tackle was playing his normal starting spot (wouldn't in a real game) and the back-up swing tackle (Nelson) was on the sidelines.

Giants tried a quick hitter to Jalin Hyatt and Banks was up in his grill real quick for a PBU. #NYGiants

Giants held Andrew Thomas and Evan Neal out of 11v11 drills entirely. It's one of the reasons Joshua Ezeudu is lining up at LT with that group. Thought is to keep Eluemunor at LG and Runyan at RG with JMS at C. Aaron Stinnie filling in at RT.

Malik Nabers hit a killer crossover during team 11v11 drills today while lined up in the slot.
Cor'Dale Flott was in initial coverage, funneled Nabers to help in middle.
Drew Lock chased out of pocket, Nabers uncovered and Lock hit him underneath. Pretty play. #NYGiants

@art_stapleton
I know a lot has been made about Joshua Ezeudu and why he's at left tackle in 11v11.
Giants holding Andrew Thomas and Evan Neal out of team drills to start OTAs, and it's worth noting Matt Nelson - the likely swing tackle if Jermaine Eluemunor is a starting guard - was in the rehab group with Neal and others.
So Ezeudu might be at LT for right now as they work through different combos in install, 11v11.
* I watched the outside linebackers and edge players during the individual portion of practice. They began with a drill designed to get the players to identify a potential pass and bat the ball away. After the initial drill, they went into a lateral movement period that seemed to mimic the movement necessary to react to a pass in zone defense. The player would have to change direction moving side to side to make a play.
* Daniel Jones got his snaps during 7-on-7s and found Malik Nabers over the middle. Kaleb Hayes, a first-year defensive back from BYU, knocked down a pass during the period.
* The Giants' defensive front was very active throughout practice. They found themselves in the backfield often, including Brian Burns and Tomon Fox.
* The secondary made plays on the ball, including a deflection from Darnay Holmes. Darius Muasau did a good job staying with a tight end across the field. Deonte Banks knocked away a pass on the right sideline. Dane Belton had a chance to come up with an interception, coming over from center field to prevent a deep completion, but he was not able to come up with the leaping interception. Rookie Andru Phillips also played strong coverage, preventing a reception.
* Giants receivers made some plays of their own. Theo Johnson caught a pass down the field, which allowed him to show off his speed for a big gain. Nabers, a fellow rookie, made the splash play of practice, getting more than 10 yards of separation on what looked like a double move before catching a deep pass from Drew Lock. Tommy DeVito hit Jalin Hyatt right on the money down the right sideline for a big gain. Wan'Dale Robinson also got himself open several times throughout practice.
* DeVito showed off his speed on a quarterback keeper, running to the right and splitting the defense for a strong gain.
* During special teams drills, the offensive line, running backs, and quarterbacks came together to work on their pass protections. The quarterback and center would have to call out the proper protection rules, identify the MIKE linebackers and then everyone would have to react properly to the defense's movement to handle designed blitzes from the coaching staff. I've been really impressed with how offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo is trying to teach the mental part of the game early in the process this spring. There isn't a ton of yelling and screaming; instead, there is a meticulous focus on the details of assignment football.
* Graham Gano has kicked the last couple of days and there are no signs of his season-ending injury from last season bothering him.

I listened to some asst coach interviews and fished for nuggets. The problem is, you have to sift through god awful minutia of questions. Like cringe worthy. Paul and Kim do nothing for me.
But to Eric’s point, there are nuggets to be had. OLB coach Bullen was asked if Simmons has spent any time with his group and he answered no, but almost in a way like he was surprised about it or he fully welcomes it. I wish there were more questions like that. I know that those questions don’t garner clicks, but man it’s exhausting hearing these other mindless questions.

Coaches and players are always confused by Paul’s long-winded questions. Sometimes they make him rephrase them, it’s hilarious.

Yup. That long question was awful. And he does it all the time. And then you have Jordan being his typical douche self correcting Burns when Burns made a comment on Cell phone ring. These guys are the pits.

I guess Sy convinced me of Neal’s balance and feet inadequacies when he evaluated him. He said Neal was often on the ground, which is not good. Apparently, Neal has not progressed in his two years, but I do agree, he has been dinged up each year….which is another concern I have…durability.

Well, maybe he is better suited to play inside as a guard, where there is less space for him to lose his balance and rely on better footwork. What do you think Neal as a guard since his run blocking skills exceed his pass blocking skills to date?

@PLeonardNYDN
Daniel Jones says he has no doubt he will be ready for Week 1, and he was extremely open and honest about all the #Giants’ QB work this offseason and his current position. Admitted he “wasn’t fired up” about the potential of NG drafting a QB on draft night, but he IS excited about Malik Nabers’ addition to the offense.

I had him with three would-be (obvious) sacks. He came around Ezeudu so fast on one play he tapped Lock on the butt before throwing his hand up to celebrate.
Kayvon Thibodeaux also had a sack.

Strange. Watched that twice and he never uses the phrase "wasn't fired up." Maybe Art flubbed which clip he posted.
@Patricia_Traina
Flott said he’s currently at 177. Said he feels good moving around.
@Connor_J_Hughes
#Giants just wrapped up their first media-open OTA.
The highlight: Long touchdown to Malik Nabers.
Drew Lock hit him on the deep shot. He got behind both Pinnick & Flott. Just a glimpse into what #NYG hope Nabers can bring.
Of note: There was pressure on the play. Lock might have been sacked, but it’s a padless OTA, so give him the TD.
Of extra note: That was really the only highlight for Lock. He did not perform well in team drills. I had him 10 of 20 with several misfires.

Thomas has an injury history so the Giants are seeing which of the back-ups is the best option in the new scheme to play LT. I am sure we will see others getting reps there during camp when Thomas takes time off.

Thank you. It was a mistake not letting him get his hands on Thibs before.
Especially when you have someone of Patterson's reputation it would be idiotic to freeze him out. Perhaps that was also some of the issue with Wink and his bosom buddy Wilkins.

Man Thibs, Burns, and Dex this year... I don't think people realize what a difference this is going to make.
How well will these 2 guys anchor on off-tackle runs?
Ezudu played some LT in college. Having a decent backup LT is pretty important. As it seems Eluemunor is playing LG it frees up Ezudu to get reps as a backup tackle.

Its going to be a looooooooong few months if this is how people react to every Daniel Jones update.
Not picking on this one guy. Its hundreds of replies like this to every DJ update
Yes, all that matters is the games. But there are no games now. So how he moves, how he compares to the other #Giants QBs, his rapport with Nabers etc. is what matters.
Every May update cant be framed as ‘Hes moving well after ACL surgery but if he throws 2 INTs vs Vikings then bench him.’
He has a chip on his shoulder. He played above-average with a chip in 2022.

Disclaimer about OTAs being voluntary and some players could have been in the facility rehabbing. Here are the players I didn’t spot today: WR Darius Slayton, WR Isaiah McKenzie, TE Darren Waller, TE Daniel Bellinger, DL Jordan Phillips, DL Rakeem Nunez-Roches, DL Timmy Horne.

Andrew Thomas didn't take team reps today. Josh Ezeudu played left tackle. And Brian Burns was lighting him up. I asked Burns if he counted how many sacks he had:
"Nah. I count them on film. They had some touchdowns they gotta take back, though," he said
@rydunleavy

Most encouraging thing about #Giants practice today was that Malik Nabers was open on almost every 11-on-11 route he ran
@DDuggan21

Our starting LT sat out. Our primary swing-tackle was playing his normal starting spot (wouldn't in a real game) and the back-up swing tackle (Nelson) was on the sidelines.

Eye opener: Malik Nabers getting open on a double-move for a deep ball 50-yard TD. Explosive player.
Dominant — Brian Burns was constantly in the backfield

First team OL (from L to R): Ezeudu, Eluemunor, Schmitz, Runyan, Cajuste
QB Drew Lock had a rough practice

I know a lot has been made about Joshua Ezeudu and why he's at left tackle in 11v11.
Giants holding Andrew Thomas and Evan Neal out of team drills to start OTAs, and it's worth noting Matt Nelson - the likely swing tackle if Jermaine Eluemunor is a starting guard - was in the rehab group with Neal and others.
So Ezeudu might be at LT for right now as they work through different combos in install, 11v11.

Practice Report: Notes & observations from OTA No. 3 - ( New Window )
