Good morning, Carl.

#lgr
It will be interesting to see what changes are made.
Will Shine : 5/26/2024 9:24 am : link
I have faith that the staff does deep evaluation dives into the games and keeps a close eye on practices.

Will Kakko be back? Is this a time to bring back Wheeler? Does Brodzinski give us Roslovic's speed but with more grit? Does Rempe play in an away game where matchups are in FL's control? Do we sub Jones for Gustafsson for a bit more play making and better puck control?

Stay tuned.
What time is puck drop, pls?

My opinion is that Gus and Rempe stay in the lineup. I would believe that Vessey is out and probably Kakko comes back. We shall see.

The Rangers are 9-3 these playoffs, you're not going to see any major changes. With Vesey out today that gets Kakko back in the lineup. I think the only decision to be made is, does Lavi keep Rempe in there? Or does he get Wheeler back in the lineup? I'd be good with either. Panthers are tough and lay hard hits, see Vesey being week to week with a shoulder injury. So having Rempe in there makes sense. But if Lavi doesn't trust Rempe enough defensively in a tough road game with FL getting last line change, then this could be the perfect opportunity to get Wheeler back in and see what he could do.

It is listed as start time. Puck drop I'd guess not long after. IOW it's not a 3:30 puck drop after 30 min pre-game nonsense. it may be 3:10 or something though after anthems, etc..

Is this a time to bring back Wheeler? No. He's old and slow and that is not a good combination.
Does Brodzinski give us Roslovic's speed but with more grit? Yes. Roslovic stinks
Does Rempe play in an away game where matchups are in FL's control? I have joked about the legend of Matt Rempe, but he did what the team needed for him to do, bang bodies, forecheck, be responsible in his own zone. He did all that.
Do we sub Jones for Gustafsson for a bit more play making and better puck control? No. Gus is a more physical player, is more seasoned and is good offensively. At this point and especially against this team, Jones is only an injury replacement.

I don't get why anyone...
BC Eagles94 : 5/26/2024 10:58 am : link
would want to see Brodzinski in the lineup. He's a career AHLer. He had the best season of his career this year with 19 points in 57 games. Roslovic has never had a season with that little point production. Why anyone would want Brodzinski in there over Roslovic is beyond me.

Expectations. You don't expect a lot of offense from Jonny B. What you expect is some forechecking, some hustle and getting the puck deep. For the most part, he does that. The expectations for Roslovic are for more offense. His offense isn't better than Jonny B without the forechecking and hustle.
Further to my earlier post focusing on D
Will Shine : 5/26/2024 11:06 am : link
Yes we are 9-3 but 4 came VS the worst team in the playoffs.

We can't keep relying on Shesty as savior. The offensive production by our D, including getting the puck out of our zone, has really fallen off. Partly due to Fox's probable injury. I hold my breath every time Trouba has the puck on his stick in the D zone. Gus has not played at the level when he subbed for Fox. Maybe it's age-related stamina?

Jones played well and showed he is not a liability in the D zone. He excels at getting the puck out. Pair him with Trouba and reunite Miller and Schneider.
Options for replacing

Vesey in the lineup. Look at option 3. That was my crazy option for game 2 to change the lineup. Maybe the author was reading that thread from two days ago.
Options for replacing Vesey - ( New Window )
You do realize Bobrovsky
pjcas18 : 5/26/2024 11:30 am : link
has faced more scoring chances than Shesterkin, right?

In the moneypuck simulation, the Rangers win game 1 ~60% of the time. However, as we all know if you don't score you will lose 100% of the games you play, so Igor's goalie play was made irrelevant by the lack of scoring, but sometimes stats provide context and help frame what you're seeing.

Both games so far (in this two game series) the Panthers have had 2.3 or less xGF). The Rangers have done a really good job of allowing zone time without allowing scoring chances. So much so, it may be part of their play. Keep everything to the outside. clog up the middle. block shots and transition.

Igor is playing great, but he's has not been a "savior" in fact you could argue in game 1 he did more to hurt the team than help them (beyond what he is expected to do). He had a negative expected goals saved in game 1.

Igor basically stole game 3 vs CAR (3-2 OT win) and played really well in games 1 and 2 vs CAR (above expectations) since then he has mostly made the saves he's expected to make.
...
ColHowPepper : 5/26/2024 12:00 pm : link
- can't help but think that continuing to allow so much defensive zone time will, sooner or later vs very good teams, bite them in their arses, esp. with Fox now on the cusp of being a liability. JT always a wild card and Gus has a lot of wear. Heavy burdens on KAM, Schneider, and Lindgren (see Gus). I think we'll see Jones sooner or later.

- Wheeler? heh, he didn't exactly set the 'first line' on fire when healthy. He went, what ~ 20 games before notching a goal? We saw his play, he is slow. Being slow, he's not great on the backcheck. His experience is 'bout only thing going for him.

- agree w/ most what BC and Gmen say

- Kappo, for jiminy crickets' sake!! Look at the GA stats Greg posted on Friday. He set up the Schneider breakaway with a perfect pass from his BL and set up a score vs CAR with a similar outlet, iirc. Maybe Lavvy wants to see more fire, more aggression, from him, there is a phlegmatic aspect to KK's game, but he's strong on the puck and defensively 95% responsible, which puts him right up there with Trocheck and a bit ahead of Laf. Roslovic shows me very little at this stage of the game.

- will be interesting to see how Maurice deploys his lines vs ours with last change. I'm looking for Cuylle to do some stuff: he has been so close, so often these playoffs.

- Zib, Kreider, Panarin ??? You never know but the team needs something more from them, a lot more. Gotta hope '24 is not '22 and '23 redux.

- pj, yeah, 3:10 sounds about right. Got to meet friends for early dinner and requested a table near the bar TV. Life of the party (:

Got under Florida's skin in game 2
larryflower37 : 5/26/2024 12:35 pm : link
And drew penalties that's the way you beat Florida.
Gotta stay physical and let them make mistakes but we need to get the power play going it's what got us here.
We need speed on the ice and play fast they will commit stupid penalties.
Personally, I'd put Kakko and Wheeler in
Anakim : 5/26/2024 1:50 pm : link
With Vesey and Roslovic out
I may be in the minority but Roslovic adds speed to lineup
Rick in Dallas : 5/26/2024 2:01 pm : link
I would keep him in the lineup and add Kakko to replace Vesey.
Leave Rempe in the lineup.
Rick,
ColHowPepper : 5/26/2024 2:07 pm : link
I get that (speed), and between Wheeler and Roslovic, I'd probably go the same way. He's certainly more game fit than Wheeler, but dang he has to be willing to check with more than his fly by stick. Drury's adds this year have been so underwhelming.
I actually thought Roslovic
nygfaninorlando : 5/26/2024 2:22 pm : link
and Wenberg we’re both good in the OT Friday night. Seemed to find some chemistry as the game went along. Hopefully we see more of that today and hopefully KK in for Vesey.
I’ve actually liked what Wennberg brings

I've never seen a guy get two penalties like that - I didn't realize it would be two consecutive penalties, rather than someone else serving the second and 5 on 3. Not sure which is better in general for the shorthanded team, but in this case, certainly not getting a shortie at 5 on 3.

I was surprised that wasn't a major. NYR lucked out IMO whether or not it was embellished. The broadcast crew wouldn't shut up about it - even the studio crew in between periods. But they never showed a view with the point of contact, so I have to believe it was elbow to shoulder or I have no explanation.

And while we're on the topic. PK Subban is horrendous. He is just downright brutal and so is Messier and Bissonette and the ESPN crew are awful too, all brutal. TNT, ESPN, just shitty studio crews.

they should get the Hockey Night in Canada crew from sportsnet. Kelly Hrudey, Kevin Bieksa, Jennifer Botterill, and hosted by Ron McLean for in between periods or at least watch and learn how it's done.

The best moments were when they have Shaq in studio - he's hilarious. Hank isn't bad, but he sticks out with that crew like a sore thumb (in a good way, but he doesn't fit in).

Whoever mentioned Evan Rodrigues hit the nail on the head - dude was facedown on the ice for five minutes yet showed absolutely no ill effects.

Couldn’t agree more.

ESPN’s coverage has been abysmal!

The studio crew sound like a bunch of fanboys sitting in a basement, swilling beer and providing nothing more than stammering banter.

Steve Levy is a net negative and Slewbban is more concerned with what he’s going to wear on set than he is with meaningful analysis. Unless of course you consider his analysis of what the players are wearing as they make their way into the arena before the game.

The in game broadcast is an abomination. The director in the truck inexplicably repeatedly throws camera shots to a close up of a given player skating off on change while the puck is being carried up ice or we see a tight shot of Igor or Bobvrosky after a save while the puck is still live and going the other way. This happens multiple times a game and is inexcusable.

TNT is led by Bozo Bissonette and his unbuttoned shirt, constant screwing with his facial hair and meandering. He’s not awful when he’s focused on the game analysis but his ADHD has him wandering off again.

A week ago or so he called Yandle an asshole on air after Yandle threw a bard at him. While it might not sound like a big deal it speaks to his level of buffoonery brand that he clearly enjoys all too much.

Liam McHugh and his cartoon frog voice is grating and he doesn’t help rein in Biz for fear he won’t come across as one of the boys.

ESPN and TNT can be so much better but I just don’t think they care e out about what a real hockey audience is looking for.

It may come across as biased but I truly believe there aren’t many better than the MSG in studio crew with Gianone, Vali, Hank and/or Boyler.

They provide a terrific player perspective and in-depth analysis.

LGR!

Zherdev could have been an absolute star. Analytics also adored him.

Analytics also loved Nigel Dawes. I think if Dawes was four years younger he carves out a decade long career in the middle six.

He actually just announced his retirement from pro hockey last year.

wtf, he was the team's 5th best F in Game 3 (after #91 only because of his GWG) after ## 13, 21, 16. He competed, went to the net, gave the team some possession. Good video of GWG, Wennberg 'wins' the draw and Kakko lifts Kulikov's stick allowing Roslovic to gain possession and shovel to Lindberg for the primary assist--KK not on scoresheet but did the little things that matter:

The 'first' line wilted as usual, invisible, and Panarin looks shell shocked, he can't even get off a clean pass or shot.

Gus was our best d-man, but man, the Panthers owned the ice behind Igor's net. Downright ugly, humbling. Too often again, KAM's clearing attempts picked off/deflected and he chases toward the wall, abandoning crease area = 2 goals. Where are the backchecking Fs??

that's right he was.

Rempe is filling his role effectively. He's in on the forecheck and in front of the net. He should be playing more. That is a perfect 4th line. The Rangers are getting pounded by the Cats physically and need to dish some back. Other than Trocheck and Lafreniere, who in the top 6 is filling his role effectively? Panarin has been shit, dancing around the perimeter now that the going has gotten rough. Mika and Kreider have disappeared. Chytil has added nothing.

They took 6 minors, most just lazy, yesterday, yet Rempe's is the only one talked about.

Thank God for Igor, he stole that game. And that it was an early game so he can get some extra rest.

Starting to wonder if something is going on with Panarin. We saw through the start of the Carolina series he was more willing to engage physically and get in the battle. This is a tougher matchup but he looks like he has no legs and the whiffing on shots and mishandling of pucks is just bizarre. Even if he's not producing, you'd never see that. Caught a shot of him on the bench and he looked exhausted. There was some word that some illness was making its way through the team last round. Just speculating, because he looks like he has nothing in the tank.

Considering that, and the slow starts for Mika and Kreider, being up 2-1 is phenomenal.

We won because Igor badly outplayed Bobrowski. Panthers are a very tough team but like Canes they need lucky bounces to score because we have Igor. They needed one goal off a skate and one off a shinpad to get to OT. Shesty was the difference vs Canes as well. Fox has been brutal and Panarin is in panic mode every time he touches puck but our goaltender has carried us so far. Hope our scorers start to score and we will close them out .

but...per the analytics it was more Bobrovsky shitting the bed than Igor playing hero ball.

The analytics show xGA for Igor of 3.84 and he allowed 4 goals for a net negative in goals saved above expected. In other words he saved most of what he should be expected to but not all, so per the analytics he did not really steal the game. Bobrovsky was brutal. Per the disparity in expected goals, Florida should have won that game and in simulations they win it over 80% of the time. The Rangers did not have a lot of scoring chances that were deemed "expected goals".

Bobrovsky had xGA of 1.691 and allowed 5 goals - which is a playoff worst single game net of a whopping -3.31 goals saved above expected. Bobrovsky has a tendency for clunkers. It had been a while, but for those who remember last year, he was so erratic with FLA began their playoff run, journeyman Alex Lyon was the starter in net.

To fans, who cares, Igor is the best, but underneath the results, he did not play his best game. Not that you should care.

FWIW I thought the Forsling goal off the face off was one Igor should have had. It was a straight shot (a good one to be fair) but from a non-goal scorer. it wasn't like a sniper shooting who beats you plus Igor had a good luck at it without traffic (just shows why I harp on face offs so much).

Anyway, stats aren't everything and xGA is somewhat subjective (like defense stats in baseball) and moneypuck doesn't own a monopoly on determined xGA, so think what you want. Just wanted to provide some context.

Yeah, Bob, Maurice and the rest of them. For a team that has a lot of intimidators, they sure do whine and flop a lot. Rodrigues' making-love-to-the-ice act after JT elbow was EPL-worthy ffs. Off to the dressing room was good theater, poor baby.

Kyle, Artemi, dunno. He hung in pretty well vs CAR, maybe the back-to-back with two physical teams? 3rd and OT he dribbled what should have been passes/shots. Saw that same bench shot you did.

yes, if it just ricocheted off his glove and as long as he didn't bat it into the net.

Is this where it gets a little tricky?

He was obviously angling his stick to deflect the puck which is exactly what he did… with the puck hitting the shaft of his stick between his gloves. But if he made the same motion but the puck hit his glove instead… maybe the goal is called off?

Had he just stood there and made no motion whatsoever and the puck smashed off his glove into the goal by accident… that’s gotta be a goal.

But Wennberg made an angling motion with his stick which — while not batting at the ball — may still have been a problematic goal had it gone off his glove. No?

Igor was up and down
Greg from LI : 5/27/2024 11:22 am : link
The first goal and the last goal were probably both ones he’d like a do over on. But he made some terrific saves late in the third and in overtime to keep them alive, when the Panthers were dominating the action.

In Bob’s case, while most people are putting the loss on him, the Panthers skaters have much to answer for on the game winner. How on earth was there no one within 30 feet of Wennberg in front of the net?

Can’t expect even the best goalie to clean up all of the messes.

Miller was horrendous in the opening period and nearly blew the game at the start of OT.

As someone mentioned earlier, I too thought that there had to be something wrong with Bread. He was awful yesterday. Avoiding contact, lethargic, and that whiff off the offensive zone face off win was embarrassing.

A couple of them were on the boards with Gus and Kakko. Kakko actually helped get that puck up the boards to Lindgren. Also, a scramble off a draw like that and guys are going to be out of position. It was a wise move by Lindgren to shoot that when he did.
Igor: Brett/pj
ColHowPepper : 5/27/2024 11:34 am : link
to be clear, Brett, you're saying that, <in addition to> the Forsling goal--and I agree with pj there--you thought he should have had first goal of the game?

I'll go back to a discussion we had (mostly pj) about Varlamov vs the Canes: I commented that late 3rd in an Islander loss, he looked totally exhausted, sruggled to regain his feet after a butterfly, etc., and that the sheer number of shots 'faced' he was physically a shell of himself. pj countered with the stat that SOG was more like the high 30s and not so beyond the pale, and I countered that the keeper has to "play" every shot taken whether it's a SOG or not because it is not foretold that it does not reach the net/deflected/ or high/wide whatever.

I think yesterday was similar: whatever the SOG or xGA, Igor has to play, to react to, each and every one of the 90 some odd shots taken even if it does not become a SOG. If you saw him skate off after the 3rd, he was drenched and wasted. Reducing his effort to excellence or mediocrity via a statistical result tells only part of the story. That said, I didn't think it was his best game either, but as so often the case behind these Rangers d-men, he didn't have enough help.

I don't blame goalies for tipped shots like that. That was a great play by Wennberg and believe it or not (I don't know if it was the case with Lindgren) players who shoot from the blue line on plays like that aren't necessarily trying to score, they know it's unlikely to beat an NHL goalie clean from a shot from the blue line, they are shooting for sticks because the tipped shot is so hard to save. It's a big part of practice now, at all levels.

That goal was a breakdown off a face-off. Kulikov chased the loose puck, got caught out of position, OEL for some reason provided board support, and Rodrigues left his guy off the face off (Wennberg).

Not to second guess Paul Maurice, but this is why I don't have our players line up this way. our RD would be low on the face off circle below the center (depending if he's trying to draw the puck back like usual) so he can decide how to react, not on the half wall, and a wing would be in that spot covering Roslovic. Roslovic cannot score from there, why have Kulikov line up there and they (FLA) have two players in front of Bobrovsky covering one NYR player.

I don't know how to characterize it, Victor, may be the way you say, but Lavvy splitting up Schneider and KAM to re-join JT with KAM was a head scratcher for sure, esp. when it seemed to me and I think many others that the two young guys really played off each other well. JT has had a rough 2nd half of season/Playoffs. To my eye Gus has been pretty steady, as I said above.

To your point about assertive generally, in going over the game last night trying to fall asleep (was pretty wired after watching my recording cuz like Brett I watched 3rd and OT from a bar), I tried to recall the last time in these Playoffs vs CAR and now FLA that a d-man collected a loose puck in the slot or in the circles and just aggressively skated the puck out of the def zone by himself--a zone exit!!!, Makar or Heiskanen like--and I was hard pressed to come up with any, Schneider might be the closest. His game yesterday was uneven, competed hard, but a lot of mistakes.

I like moneypuck (who I used in that last post), natural stat trick (he only had the Panthers with 2.67 xGF so he agrees with you on the first goal), and hockey stat miner (who is a NYR fan (maybe posts on here, lol) also posted that stat about the NYR and winning a series 2 to 1).

I love MoneyPuck and HockeyStatMiner. I haven't used Natural Hat Trick much.

I thought MoneyPuck saying the Rangers deserved to win in G1 was interesting. I disagreed lol.

to be clear, Brett, you're saying that, <in addition to> the Forsling goal--and I agree with pj there--you thought he should have had first goal of the game?

I thought he should have had the first one. I'm actually more forgiving on the Forsling goal. It was a nice shot.
