One of the best safties in the league and Giants were crazy to let him go. My opinion he is a good player, but Giants had to fix other positions. I think he is just fed sound bites. Glad he was not a real candidate for the GM role here
Nubin reminds me a lot of McKinney-not a speed guy, but a good tackler
It's probably the most difficult to judge the value of a deep safety. They're not on the screen much and a lot of what they do is prevent things from happening. A safety can have a flawless game by making the correct reads/decisions and taking away a lot of opportunities for chunk plays. In that case, it would go basically unnoticed by viewers.
He can be good, and also not be worth nearly what GB felt to the Giants. He got a very generous payday so the onus on him to show he's worth it. I think he's a good player who got a great payday and that's always tough but a good pass.
I suspect he was not nearly as negative about the Giants when he interviewed and lost out to Gettleman. I think Riddick believes that the more definitive you say something the more it is validated.
Sure I totally agree. I think McKinney's best days are ahead for him, or should be, as he's still very young. But that contract and his demands are a bit high for my liking.
McKinney last year. He wasn't very good in the first half, but played much better in the second half. His best game was his last.
IMO, McKinney never reached the level of play that I expected of him. He was good, but not a real difference maker (again, except for that last game).
I agree. I expected so much more. He wasn't a difference maker. Maybe in another system? Who knows. I'm ok with the Giants decision to let him walk and not overpay.
how mckinney gets paid in the ballpark of sneed is a mystery to me when there are so many starter level safeties signing for 1/3 that amount.
and that's not because i dont believe in the value of safeties, i do, i just dont believe in the value of a non-elite safety compared to top corners. mckinney is nowhere near the impact of players like reed, or sanders, or more recently mathieu/baker/simmons/minkah at their best. he is a jack of all trades but master of none imo.
antoine winfield had 6 forced fumbles and 3 ints last year, which is almost the same amount of turnovers as missed tackles (10). mckinney has 9 turnovers (all ints) in his entire career.
of McKinney vs Nubin, but organizationally it seems like everything went right:
- Nubin was the first safety taken (if you don't count Dejean) so they had their pick of anyone in the draft and it didn't cost a trade up.
- McKinney's deal would have made pretty much any other free agency signing impossible.
- Right now OTC has them netting a 4th round compensatory pick for McKinney.
May be the most difficult position for average fans or even PFF for that matter to gauge. Especially safeties like McKinney who demonstrate versatility. Can anyone be sure what his assignment was on any given play or what plays he prevented from happening just by being in the right place at the right time by design?
I’m not saying he was undervalued or overvalued, just saying it’s pretty difficult for any of us to make that assessment.
But now that all the info is in, his contract and our draft pick it’s not as big of a loss. McKinney is young and still getting better, some draft picks are older than him. It’s hard to argue for or against on him. The hype was always better than the player.
didnt do McKinney any favors either. With the exception of his last game as a Giant, there was never a time when I thought he changed the complexion of a game. Compare that to Dex, Bobby O, even Thibs a few times last year where they single handedly changed games.
McKinney was kind of just always there doing his job, but not standing out.
He’s not a game changer. The only safety I’m paying that kind of money is Ed Reed. He’s nowhere close to being Reed. He’s a good safety. You don’t pay a good safety 17mil. That’s insane. You can’t allocate that much cap space to a safety.
then why did they burn the valuable #47 on a safety. If they kept McKinney, They are set at safety for years to come with two good young players who play almost every down and they don’t have to throw away a premium pick trying to replace him.
People here get so upset over a starter who is earning a few million dollars more than they think he is worth. I’m an NFL franchise, some players are underpaid and some players are overpaid. The idea is to fill every position with a good player. The good teams manage the cap.

Because Nubin will have about a total $8MM a year cap hit for the next 4 years -- about $60 million less than X's.
We had Love and Mckinney - both homegrown good players. Love could have been had at a reasonable price - $6M/year. They let him go and paid Slayton. Thought being pay Mckinney. They shold have locked up Mckinney THAT year. Instead lets wait and see how he does, has a good year and then gets a huge contract. Giants then have to spend a 2nd round pick to replace him. Poor strategy and execution. Two good drafted players. Both gone.
Love could have been re-signed at a reasonable price, but Pinnock did
pretty well in his place. I was under the impression that McKinney always wanted a lot of money and couldn't have been signed for a much lower amount.
They're both good players. It's tough to say who's better but I think the Giants as a team are better with Pinnock + 2 VSB veteran FAs (which is what the extra $3MM buys) over just Love.
McKinney's position coach at Bama is the pass defense coordinator in Green Bay. He's put up double digit passes defended each year he's played a full season, which is a corner back number.
Last year if I recall correctly he played ~20% of his snaps in the slot. My guess is Green Bay envisions him as a slot a safety and that slot number is closer to 30%, like it was in college.

Safety to me is not one of the top positions you need to fill. If you have a good one at a reasonable price then that is a good place to be.

0 INTs
Riddick is not very good and is bitter the Giants didn’t hire him.

For they money he wanted, he had better be good against good QBs.
But he wasn't. He is eminently replaceable.

Threw me for a loop too.

QB is the only important position. And he better elevate and post stats or else.

I think that's the reason for the compensation.
