Dan and Nick are joined by Match Quarters' Cody Alexander for a super, nitty-gritty deep dive on the Xs and Os focused on the defensive side of the ball -- specifically dealing in concepts that new defensive coordinator Shane Bowen will deploy.

Put this one in the background while trying to work… This isn’t background material. Really good X’s & O’s stuff that’s going to take some undivided attention… Those guys releasing this on Monday morning is evil!
These guys keep knocking it out of the park

Probably the best Giants coverage out there right now

through this... very good and very technical. Some of it way over my head.

However, one thought that does come to mind is if we are going to be heavy on quarters coverage, it helps to have two physical safeties like Nubin and Pinnock in run defense. Sounds like Dexter's role may be changing a bit despite Andre Patterson saying otherwise.

explains why nickel corner is so important in today's game from a schematic point of view. i've long suspected this was one of the problems on this team.
Yup

he's talking about how much of a good fit Nubin is for this defense.
hard to look at these and not agree with a philosophy shift to bend

but don't break - winks defenses did a lot of breaking. exactly 1 in every 10 plays Winks defense gave up an explosive.

I'm on a second watch trying to absorb some of the weighty stuff
man that section talking about how damaging explosive run plays are

was really nail on the head of last year's problems. 2nd + short, in compromised situations where play action was effective, give up more big plays.

Not defending Wink but that stat is definitely driven more by explosive runs than explosive passes. Interesting.

The passing number is actually pretty good. Similar to some Top 10 teams.

they go together, explosive runs keep teams in short yardage and force putting more guys in the box, which makes it easier for teams to get first downs and gain non-explosive yardage.

winks D created turnovers and you're right, not a ton of breakdowns in the deep passing game. but were bad vs the run, gave up a ton of yardage, and ultimately didn't prevent points from being scored. they were blitzing a lot which took guys out of coverage and since they didnt get home a lot teams gained a lot of yards/scored a lot of points.
