Edmonton Oilers @ Florida Panthers 8pm ET on ABC.
The Panthers are favored to win the series due to a well balanced team and a stout goalie, but the Oilers have the playoffs top 4 scorers and 5 of the top 7.
Florida's biggest weakness is their D are not very good defensively and due to their aggressive style they play in the offensive zone are prone to giving up odd-man rushes and they rely on their goalie (Bobrovsky) to bail them out. They also take a lot of penalties (generally speaking).
the Oilers are lethal on the power play (37.3% to lead the playoffs). The Oilers PK also leads the playoffs. They will need both to be at their best to win the series because their goalie (Skinner) has not been consistent (but was fantastic in the Dallas series).
This is Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl's first SCF appearance and both have had stellar careers to this point, but post-season success has eluded them both and been a stain to an extent on their careers. The only stain.
Should be a fun series. The heavy forecheck and 200-foot game of Florida with Barkov, Tkachuck, Bennett, Verhaeghe, Reinhart, vs the speed and skill of Edmonton with McDavid, Draisaitl, Hyman, Bouchard, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, etc.

Rangers don't have McDavid and Draisatl either though, so maybe it will come to fruition in the finals.
I've been pulling for the Oilers to come out of the West, but if the Panthers win I won't be disappointed after they just throttled the Rangers. If that series was close, I would probably be pulling harder for the Oilers.
Panthers in 6.
They were terrific against Rangers
Not disagreeing with your point because it was a major part of the reason Rangers lost, but Panthers averaged 2.5 penalties per game. I guess when the puck is constantly in the offensive zone it's easier to avoid the penalties though, so there's that.
Quote:
were 1 for 15 on the PP vs FLA. That's the story of the series right there. The Rangers, during the regular season, had the 3rd best PP at 26.4%, if they played to their season average that's 3 more goals in the series and they lost 3 1-goal games. I know it's not that simple, but sometimes it is a big part of the reason for the outcome.

Exactly, most penalties occur when the other team has the puck and you are trying to get it, so the Panthers having the puck so much the Rangers couldn't draw the normal penalties the Panthers usually commit.
So the Panthers penalties were lower than usual in that series.
All that said if the Rangers convert to their regular season average on power plays in the series there is quite possibly a different outcome.
EDM to win the cup (I think FLA wins, but I like the underdog odds)
McDavid to win Conn Smythe
Barkov to win Conn Smythe
The Rangers didn't expose them, but BOS and TBL did. FLA was FAR more talented than BOS and TBL so it didn't cost them series, but if you watched those games there was a ton of odd-man rushes and PP's.
Forsling is fantastic, but none of the other D are defensive D's.
Still do...
Largest increase since 2018-2019. Cap was $83.5M last year.
Give the edge to Panthers due to Bobrosky in goal over Skinner
What was that?
Welp he's carried it into the second and FL has extended the lead. Crazy
FLA is not close to dominating zone time like they did vs NYR and the EDM forwards are moving their feet and forechecking effectively.
but it's very early.

I meant the goals and I'm right about that.
they just need to score on their chances. 3 (at least) breakaways and 3 or 4 power plays. need to capitalize or they have no chance.
They will get McDavid'd on Monday.
So, win Monday and EDM did what they needed to do. Lose and the odds are long for them to win.
Having said that I expect the Panthers to get to their checking game . They were rusty having a week off.

Yeah I use that site all the time for checking the NHL team cap stuff.
If EDM plays the exact same game as Saturday I think they get a good outcome. I don't think Bobrovsky can keep up that level of play.
But also, I doubt FLA plays as flat tonight as they did Saturday.
I also don't think EDM can play McDavid 25 min again nor should they.
Should be a fun game.

Bobrovsky is a huge advantage in goal for Panthers.
I thought Draisatil left his feet on elbow hit yo Barkov
Need to shoot more. They keep looking for the seam pass and Barkov (or others) keep getting their stick in the lane. Probably why Draisaitl targeted Barkov. I hope he returns he was my FLA bet for Conn Smythe. Though at this rate it's Bobrovsky's to lose.
The PP is the story of the series, like FLA vs NYR. Other things are happening and people will harp on them, but the difference is 0% on the PP for EDM, a team who relies on PP goals to score.
They say your goalie has to be your best penalty killer and while I don't think EDM is getting the best looks, it's probably true about Bobrovsky.
EDM should be shooting for sticks, getting traffic in front, etc. but hard to tell the owners of a historic playoff PP they need to do something differently.
Quite frankly, I am shocked he did not receive a major penalty from referees who huddled up after hit.
I hope Barkov is OK as he is fun to watch

This is probably a poor analogy, but heavy reliance or success on PP reminds me of baseball teams with extremely good offenses trying to find success in October. Things tighten up and it's usually the teams with the timely pitching and good defense that usually end up winning.
but...LAK was 3rd and VAN was 6th and DAL was 8th (all top 10) and EDM beat all three to get here and in the process had put up the highest PP% in playoff history.
So, FLA is it, they have it figured out?
Even if EDM was not producing on the PP at historic levels so far in this series being 0 for 7 is a series loser for them - IOW they don't need almost 40% but 20% would be ok and possibly gets them a split in FLA.
Florida looks unbeatable and I guess everyone was right saying Rangers/Panthers was the SCF.
Do you think Edmonton is going to be swept?

released. Of course USA vs Canada is in MTL, but I am definitely going to try and get tickets for the BOS game USA vs SWE game and maybe the finals.

Sure seems possible, If they can't score on the PP seems even more possible. I think they win at least one in Edmonton though.
Correct.
I think FL sweeps.

Lol I remember being mad a week ago about how things turned out but if they can suffocate Connor mcdavid then ... It can happen to anyone?
The first buyout window opens 48 hours after the SC is won - which the way things are doing could be in less than a week.
Of the 9 players the only noteworthy ones:
Pierre Luc Dubois - MTL dodged a bullet/freight train by not trading for and extending PLD. What a disaster he has been. If they buy him out this off-season they are just on the hook for 1/3 of the total owed since he is not yet 26. If they want until June 24th or later (when he turns 26) they're on the hook for 2/3rds. GM's (Rob Blake in this case) don't like to admit they were wrong, so I doubt they do it, but I can see it making sense.
Barclay Goodrow - I think this is more of the player not matching their contract than Goodrow being a bad player. from the link...
Jean-Gabriel Pageau - per the article - more likely to be traded, but buyout is not out of the question.
the rest are not interesting, except Cam Atkinson, but he's mostly interesting b/c I see him being in demand if he's bought out (and healthy). Maybe PLD too, but PLD might have played himself out of a good contract.

I'm still mad. I think it's the Rangers winning it all if Fox didn't get hurt.
Hate to say it of a player in the player assistance program, but I wouldn't touch him. Let someone else allow him to re-establish his value.
In fact, I'd even rather have Pierre Luc Dubois (assuming he's bought out).

Trouba for Laine? (I'm only half kidding)
A must-win if there ever was one.
Nurse expected to play. If he was ever a NYR Anakim would be dead of an aneurysm. Gets paid more than Trouba and is half the player.
I don't know if Nurse playing is a good thing or not, but with as physical as Florida F's are, they need 6 D. Nurse and Ceci are getting destroyed though and I'm not sure they're even playing the "hard minutes".
But...the real story is EDM power play. They're drawing penalties, just not scoring, if that doesn't change this series is over, and it might be already.
Anything?
Anything?
FLA is not even dominating zone time. You have PTSD from the Rangers series. EDM leads in CF%.
EDM leads in expected goals for, EDM leads in scoring chances, EDM leads in high danger chances, this is not the Rangers Panthers series where Igor kept it close. This is closer to the reverse but where FLA has Igor in net.
EDM is shooting less than 2%.
They have to score on the PP, hate to say it because it's goonish, but I'd even have Corey Perry dress for the sole purpose to get in Bobrovsky's jersey and be a little physical in there. Get him off his game - and if you think for a second NHL players don't do this you're crazy.
Anyway, EDM is competitive everywhere in this series, except where it matters....on the scoreboard.
So, my baby step that would make a difference is the PP. if EDM was 25% on the PP this series is split.
ex-Sacred Heart and Curry College player
probably good to have a young coach for Celebrini, etc.
He has a sports hernia and has been a complete zero in this series, so might be addition by subtraction but fans like to think sometimes players are plug n play. Like all the whining about why didn't the Rangers play Zac Jones? Not saying coaches are always right, but it's clear the coaches play the players who they feel give them the best chance to win. And so far for the Oilers it's been a less than 100% Evander Kane over all other options.
I read they may even just opt to go 11 forwards and 7 D because of the Nurse injury and personnel on D.
I would do that and alternate McDavid and Draisaitl on the 3rd line.
Does it matter? This series is over.
they are up 3-0 so it's hard to argue anything otherwise, however, if you believe in analytics, the Panthers only "deserved" to win game 2.
They base this factor om multiple things like scoring chances, expected goals, etc. and game 1 EDM won 90% of the time, and game 3 they won over 60% of the time with those metrics over 1,000 game simulations each.
The lost game 2 by a wide margin, but what this means is they are outplaying FLA (in game 1 and 3 at least) but still losing.
As many have pointed to the goalie is the difference.
Does that mean FLA is better? Sure in superficial terms and analysis - a goalie is part of the team, but the data says it's unusual for FLA to win games 1 and 3 when the teams play how they did.
In the end it means nothing, one team hoists Lord Stanley, the other cries and spends all summer wondering where it went wrong and they are not comforted by Moneypuck.com's deserve-o-meter suggesting they should have had a different outcome, but it also doesn't change those details.
Analytics are great for stat geeks but I believe the better and deeper team is the Panthers.Wins is the greatest stat imv.
I also feel the Panthers took their foot off the pedal a bit in the third period with the respect to their checking game and the Oilers responded accordingly.
A good learning moment for the Panthers.
people wondered, how will the Oilers handle the Panthers ferocious forecheck. They haven't been great at it, especially Nurse and Ekholkm who are struggling with it, but that's hasn't been a problem overall. They can't solve Bobrovsky and that is the story in the series. The PP is the epitome of why they will lose.
As for the FLA PK and this is true of the Rangers series as well, there is a saying, you need your goalie to be your best penalty killer and I 100% think that's what we're seeing here.
FLA PK was good in the regular season, but not this good. Bobrovsky is just playing at another level right now. I once thought I'd never see a goalie outplay Tim Thomas in the playoffs when the Bruins won in 2011 (no offense Dominik Hasek who did it repeatedly but not in this century). Granted Bobrovsky isn't as un-orthodox and acrobatic with highlight reel saves as Thomas was, but he's almost as effective.
This is has Steelers vs Seahawks Super Bowl vibes to it. Two teams I have no interest and no animosity towards, but at least you could get entertained by that Rams/Titans Super Bowl in 1999-2000.
I think if this were a best of 8 and they kept playing, it might be 8-0 or 7-1 Florida.
I thought Edmonton was way better than they were, but to me they just look like one of those teams should just be happy they got to the SCF.
So, not to take anything away from Quick, his 2012 was incredible, but eye test, I have never seen anything like Tim Thomas the year before. Maybe that's a tribute to Quick. He made it look easy - like how Carey Price played net so sound positionally, calm, in control, Thomas was flailing all over the crease - like Hasek did.
They aren't playing badly, they're paying the price for not upgrading in goal.

Brodeur is probably after those 2 for me.
My favorite goalie "moment" of all time other than Jim Craig in Miracle on Ice was the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. Mike Richter may have had the best performance I've seen a goalie have in any format, in any tournament.
and it highlights my thoughts on this series. first, I don't find it boring at all. Almost every time McDavid touches the puck he's like a jitterbug skimming across water he just looks different than everyone else and I love to watch him play, and it seems like he's playing a ton each game (you can see his frustration but he's playing a ton). And overall this is not as lopsided a series as the 3-0 lead and two 3 goal wins would indicate.
Also Forsling defensively is so sound.
Wish Barkov was a Ranger.

Good call. He's the premier 2-way player in the league now that Bergeron is retired. I think Barkov probably even got cheated out of a Selke or 2 due to the reputation of Bergeron (and Barkov has 2 Selke's).
Also, Richter would allow some of the worst goals I've ever seen in my life lol like from center ice or way behind it.

I hate to keep crossing swords here but it's like when the Nets got swept by the Lakers in 2002. 3 out of 4 of those games were close. Still a sweep though.
Florida will hoist the cup in game 4 and a standing ovation by the Edmonton fans for a concerted effort.
Brodeur is probably after those 2 for me.

PJ you know how big of a Devils fan I am. The best goalie of my lifetime is Roy and I don't have to think about it much. As random as Playoff OT can be it wasn't with Roy. He played his best hockey during it. At one point he won a record 10 in a row and was 40-18 lifetime. I saw many games where he stood on his head and absolutely refused to let his team lose. Not to mention when he and Brodeur met in the finals he outplayed Marty. After that I don't get as much into ordering them. I'd probably take Marty over Hasek because of his durability and sheer numbers, but I wouldn't fight to the death with someone who puts Hasek ahead of Marty. '94 when Marty was a rookie they went head to head in a great 7 game 1st Rd series. Game 6 went scoreless for like 6 or 7 periods. I didn't think anyone would ever score. It may have been the best goalie battle I've ever seen.
I felt like every other game that team played went into overtime because he kept them alive somehow. Some of them were like 3 and one of them went 5 vs Dallas.
Glad he wanted all in 2007. He deserved a cup just for that effort alone.
Besides that I think the hockey is interesting, I need a couple bad games from Bobrovsky and a couple good ones from Barkov to shift Conn Smythe to Barkov so I win my bet.
As good as Bobrovsky has been, Swayman (with a sterling 13.3 in 12 games) and Shesterkin (13.1 in 16 games) both still lead Bobrovsky (11.5 in 20 games) in goals saved above expected for the playoffs.
I think Bob is the HEAVY favorite for Conn Smythe right now (Captain obvious?), in fact it would probably be unanimous, but if the series extends I do think there is an opening for him to lose it.
Now, another clunker from Bobrovsky, who all of a sudden looks very mediocre and an elite effort from Barkov to help seal the cup, who knows maybe I pull out my bet. lol. because that's all that matters.
Meanwhile, if the Oilers sneak a game or two more, and McDavid piles up more points, any shot he's the Conn Smythe from the losing team? It's been a while but it has happened and his point total is historic. The last two times it happened was the aforementioned JSG in 2003 and Hextall in 1987. Only once out of the 5 times it's happened has it been awarded to a non-goalie (Reggie Leach 1976) so it's a longshot.
McDavid already has the 5th highest point total ever in a post-season behind 3 Gretzky's and a Lemieux and the highest post-season point total in over 30 years.
Route 9 : 7:06 pm : link : reply
Wasn't that the case in 93? Gretzky had a shit ton of points in a SCF losing effort and the trophy went to Roy.

very similar to this year.
Gretzky had 2 more points that year than McDavid does, but also played 2 more games.
That said, Roy's stats were better than Bobrovsky's are and that Habs team wasn't anywhere close to these Panthers. Loved Damphousse and Muller, but the young guys came up huge in the playoffs (LeClair, Dionne, DiPietro, etc.) and Roy was great. The one game the Habs lost that series was game 1 then they ripped off 4 straight and he stole game 4 - the OT win in LA.
Roy never allowed more than 3 goals in a game that entire playoffs, Bobrovsky has 4 times so far this playoffs.
8pm in FLA.
In other news...
Pascal Vincent fired as Blue Jackets coach. They have a new GM (Waddell from CAR) hired on 5/28 so no surprise just kind of late in the cycle - some names already scooped up.
I was actually surprised by the score the other night, didn't watch one second of it and didn't think Edmonton had that type of game in them. I think they win tonight.
It didn't seem like Kulak even got Stenlund, but either way.
not sure if it was tipped.
EDM up 3-0, maybe Bob gets the gate.
The worse Bobrovsky plays the more I think McDavid has a shot at Conn Smythe regardless who wins.
Barkov has been awesome, but if Bobrovsky isn't Conn Smythe not sure who on FLA would be. I guess maybe Barkov but McDavid is having a historic post season.

4-1 EDM.
FLA comes right back E-rod scores 14 seconds later.
4-2 EDM.
And McDavid's PP zone entries are incredible. If you can get a player with that speed to get it in the zone under control and let you set up, it's negates a lot of the PK aggression.

The pick is top 10 protected and Calgary is retaining salary. Not killing the trade at all, and Ball is no Norris candidate, but on a team and defense so lacking in size and physicality I don't think I would have dealt one of our few sources of it. Will never happen, but the regular season should be 72 games. End the playoffs in May or first week of June.
Now, I'm not saying everyone is greedy, but do you think if you give those groups the choice of playing a reasonable season and ending at a reasonable time and giving back 12.5% of your compensation or leave it as is, what do you think they will do?
If you left the money the same you may get some traction, but why would you leave the money the same?
- 4 games against each divisional opponent
- 2 games against each conference non-divisional opponent
- 2 games against each non-conference opponent
The next sweet spot would be to add 1 game against each non-divisional conference opponent to the current schedule, and that would take the season to 84 games.
The playoffs. Four series which could allow for a team to play up to 28 games. That's more than a THIRD of the regular season. Absurd. First round should be best of 3, second round best of 5, then 7 for the last two rounds.
As much as the lockdowns sucked, having all of those sports going on during the boring months of summer months at the same time was a great payoff.
LOL, so under that arrangement who is the first "Mr. Thanksgiving" ??

I feel the same. They've resorted to their undisciplined ways. I feel they'll tighten up quit a bit tonight butvI think Edmonton will win a close one. All bets will be off for game 7, a true tossup with the edge going to whoever scores first. Sticks will be held a lot tighter by whoever goes down early. Pressure is a great discriminator
The Panthers style of play is conducive to giving up odd-man rushes and they take a lot of penalties (if you push them even a little). So if Bobrovsky isn't great and...teams start capitalizing on the PP it changes everything.
That said, Bobrovsky can still turn it around and on the other side the Oilers don't exactly have Igor in net, so even if Bob is just Ok, FLA still could win a 6-5 game.
I do think they (FLA) still have the edge, but EDM winning the cup now should surprise no one.

LOL, so under that arrangement who is the first "Mr. Thanksgiving" ??
I'd shorten the regular season so the playoffs started in September.
And so can FL. Game 7 in the SCF. Nothing better
Let's go Oil!
Oilers have the momentum for sure
Their PK has been outstanding
Plus 5v5 edge to Oilers also
Bobrovsky is going to have to stand on his head imv for Panthers to win.
Gotta think Drury will be interested

I think the last sweep in the NHL finals was the Red Wings? 1998?
Correct.
I think FL sweeps.
You absolute fool.
Same. I have mentioned this several times, I hate it too, it kills the flow IMO.
but on the plus side once the SC finals wrap up, just three more days until the draft.

Montreal was dumb as shit for not taking him.

doing some work. Most of the expectations were PHI was taking a big gamble and Michkov wouldn't debut for years. All the teams who passed on him (besides CHI) may look foolish if he can deliver.

Yeah. Even if he doesn't pan out, not exactly like they were in win-now mode and couldn't wait a couple years.
If you get good odds you should bet on that.
Of course I'm traveling for work. not a huge deal, it's on ABC and I'm sure the hotel bar will have the game, but would be better to watch in the comfort of my home.,
Brodeur is probably after those 2 for me.
My favorite goalie "moment" of all time other than Jim Craig in Miracle on Ice was the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. Mike Richter may have had the best performance I've seen a goalie have in any format, in any tournament.
I was away early in this SCF (nice post by rnargi having expunged more or less ECF) and saw this.
The evolution of the position in the NHL fascinates me. Of the keepers pj eliminates as before his time Dryden, followed by Parent and Esposito (relatively smaller in stature--Dryden was a complete outlier in his time, now he'd be 'normal' with the Bobs, Hellebucyks, etc. Athletic behemoths who can occlude much of the 6'x 4' just by squatting in their pads. (An aside, I was at the Rangers-Leafs SCP game in '71 when, after a scrum, Vic Hadfield picked up Parent's mask and flew it over the glass into the stands and the fans wouldn't throw it back; by the time his backup mask was brought from the dressing room they had, iirc.)
The others pj mentions in his disqualify category were physical specimens apart: Gump (whom I saw play a bunch, was a smallish, rolly polly teddy bear, with a modicum of athleticism), Plante was slender, maybe an avg. male of his time, Broda (remember him the least, sorta same), and Sawchuk was prolly the biggest, but nothing like today's netminders. Roy definitely fit within the quick, slender, lithe snakes with his arms. Hasek and Brodeur, hardly chunky iron men, born to their HOF breed.
That's why Igor, today, is such an outlier, because he harkens back to the quick, smallish, darting keeper, a vanishing breed. Quick may not be much bigger than Esposito. I haven't looked up any of these GK's heights/weights, all from memory.
Keeper of a flame for underdogs and throwbacks in time, I hope that Bob doesn't have it tonight.
Go Oilers!
I loved watching him play in person and on TV.
Another smallish goalie probably less than 6’
I think Oilers have a huge advantage tonight in game 7.
It's f-ing game 7 and it's hockey - no one is favored or has an advantage IMO. That said, pick 1 goalie on either team for this game and it's still Bobrovsky for me despite the shit show the last 3 games have been.
I'm just rooting for a non-blowout and OT.
Heroes are made in game 7's.
Also though I bet EDM to win the cup and McDavid and Barkov for Conn Smythe - so rooting for two of those to happen too, lol.
Agreed. I rarely watch if the Rangers are out, but this is a great series -- expecting a really entertaining game tonight.
If EDM manages a lead it's going to be torture for FL fans.
Sunrise
well that's how I learned it existed too, lol (because the Panthers arena is there)

The afternoon guys on NHL Network think McDavid has the Conn Smythe locked up regardless of outcome tonight.
I'm a dad with a 6 year old that is giddy for hockey.
I can't wait for the puck to drop.
Game 7. Let's Go!

Good luck, bud.
NYR and BOS couldn't make them pay.
tie game, great pace.
McDavid quite first period
Ya gotta love SCF game 7 intensity

Agreed. Quickly established physicality which led to their forcheck being effective in a sustained manner for the first time since early in game 3. Edm has to find a way to break it, either by being more aggressive off the boards and out of the corners or making the forecheckers pay with big hits.
Stanley Cup Finals - Game 7 - Edmonton Oilers @ Florida Panthers on ABC/ESPN - 8 pm ET start - ( New Window )

It's safe to say all Rangers fans are with you!
Wow...I knew they were gonna score there. All EDN there and FL pots one.
Tired. Long shift?

Right into their goalie. Wtf

I think they just misread it.
He has been invisible yet again
McDavid has also got to get going

Maybe...but you never let Reinhart skate in like that. That's a read you make every time.
Yep that was on Skinner, no doubt about it
Both D played it like a 2 on 1. Like they didn’t realize each other was out there.
Sorry, RP. Heartbreaking, I feel for you.
I think they threw the kitchen sink, too. What a defensive performance. Defense wins championships, time and again.

Yeah PK Subban nailed it with his analysis. They take the center of the ice away. Everything comes from the outside.
Congrats #97
Well done and great moment seeing his dad teary eyed and his mom and brother filled with joy.
Hope we see that again in 20 months for the Olympics.
Quick turnaround for the NBA and NHL, especially for the NHL. Gonna be one last gasp for the Winter sports leagues before the focus shifts away from them until training camp.
pj agree your 11:11
Sweet emotion by Maurice, all hail his players
Sports.
Props to Bobrovsky for an outstanding game
Sucks that a soft goal was the winner
Oilers #29 really disappointed in SCF’s.
Now it’s the offseason to see if Drury can get the Rangers to the SCF’s
Yep, this year hurts far more than any of the Rangers' previous chokejobs, for some reason.
Here was the voting:
No. It wasn't. They failed just like every other time.
Meh. While we have to wait literal decades to see the cup, these undeserving (or whatever) hot area fan bases keep getting it done.
I don't get why everybody is so disappointed and surprised. Did you really expect the likes of Artemi Panarin or Mika to come through for us?
I'll give ya that, seeing Vegas Golden Knights on the cup is kind of stupid lol
