NFT: ⚾️ YANKEE THREAD⚾️ Dodgers Game 3. 6/9

Ron from Ninerland : 6/9/2024 3:34 pm

This game deserves its own thread.

Boone is being Boone.
It’s almost like Boone
bceagle05 : 6/9/2024 3:42 pm : link
is trolling Cashman by batting Grisham fifth. Or Cash and Boone are just trolling the fans.
Boone doesn’t make the lineups.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 6/9/2024 3:55 pm : link
He’ll do whatever the front office tells him and that’s how he’s stuck around this long.

Grisham batting fifth is legitimately insane.

In completely unrelated news, Dominguez is 4-5 today and his average in AAA is a sparkling .500
Dominguez is going to force the Yankees
CasualFan : 6/9/2024 4:05 pm : link
to bring him up. He plays in Rochester all next week

With Gil pitching we should only loose 2-0…
Yea
djm : 6/9/2024 4:42 pm : link
Yanks should be batting Bernie or Tino or Giambi or strawberry 5th. So many other great hitters just begging to take that slot.

want the Dodgers fans taking over, fucking do something on the field.

Is Grisham 1-2 against Glasnow with 1 HR or something?

We know the Yankees make decisions based on people’s feelings and options remaining, and which dumpster Cashman found you under.
Who cares about the Dodgers fans in the building.
bceagle05 : 6/9/2024 6:22 pm : link
Do they show up in fourth inning for away games too? Pitching matchups favored LA, plus no Soto - predictable outcome so far. Oh well.

Hopefully Gil has a statement game on national TV.

Why Glasnow pitched to Judge with a base open & Stanton on deck is beyond my understanding. Stanton then promptly struck out on three pitches.

On blown review of Hayward trap. Best angle clearly shows ball at least at grass level if not below. Unless his glove is made of paper, no way he caught it.

Game they’ll only be up 1.5 on the orioles despite the insane start to the season. Probably doesn’t bode well given the Yankees propensity for injuries as the year wears on.

It’s shocking how bad the lineup looks without Soto.

Have to wonder if Boone is a big game manager. He has curious BP usage often and situationally he is questionable.

This thought process has to go. Let’s see how not caring about June works out when they are playing in the damn wild card round again needing to win a 3 game series while deploying your best pitchers to do it. I hate to tell you, June games count as much as September games. How’s the whole “ we only care about October!” mindset been working out for them? Bullshit. You’re crying to keep him out for no reason whatsoever. What report have you seen the past day or two makes you think this is a long term injury? I’ll clue you in, there isn’t one. Soto himself said that the injury didn’t affect him at all on the field. Resting him out of paranoia in anticipation of being healthy “in October” is laughable. Funny thing about smallish injuries/soft tissue - they get worse. It is not bad now. But if they don't rest it now, it gets more inflamed and then it tears. Injuries do not just disappear without treatment and forearm injuries can lead to UCL tears.

Good win.

Good question Ravich asked earlier:

Betts, Freeman, Ohtani vs Volpe, Soto, Judge - who you got?

Good question.

IMHO:
Betts>Volpe

Soto>Freeman - is this even close?

Judge>Ohtani - close here, but I think Judge is the better batter, now. Ohtani much younger. Ohtani with an overall edge when he can pitch.

You wouldn't be comparing Volpe with Betts, it'd be Ohtani, Betts, and
Jim in Hoboken : 6/9/2024 10:07 pm : link
Freeman vs Judge, Soto and Volpe, I don't think it's a slam dunk people outside of NY choose Soto over Betts. And if you include Ohtani's pitching.....

I'd imagine people who grew up idolizing Mickey felt the same way we all feel about Judge now. He absolutely can't go through his prime without a couple of championships. Say what you want about fans like me complaining, put yourself in his shoes. For me Judge is better than Mattingly and still has a few prime years left. I don't know how you can not feel the urgency for him.
We all love Verdugo's grit, but he cannot be the reason Dominguez
Jim in Hoboken : 6/9/2024 10:11 pm : link
stays in the minors.

Against LHP, he sits and Dominguez plays LF.
Against RHP, Stanton sits and Dominguez DH's. You can throw a bone or two to Stanton against junk baller righties if you want.

they had a stat showing Judge with the best 32-game OPS stretch since Bonds in 2004.

Already crazy, but the league context makes it even crazier. This is the lowest leaguewide OPS in the AL since 1981.

Never in my life has one Yankee been MUST WATCH TV everytime he comes to the plate. Not even A-Rod at his MVP best. Just a ridiculous player.

You can compare it however you want, but Betts and Volpe are the shortstops. That is the way I chose to compare.

Think it was probably if you had your choice of either groups, who would you take. I took that approach.

Can't blame the fans for wanting Soto, but absolutely can see Judge being "embarrassed" for Grisham. We also have to know it is doubtful Grisham is with the Yanks later this year. And a it was a huge response by him to crush that ball.

Exactly. No issue with Judge sticking up for his teammate after the game, that’s what a captain and leader should do

Chants for Soto aside, hats off to Grisham for delivering a monster HR to help avert the sweep last night. That reminded me a bit of 98…bench guys who didn’t get much playing time often came through in a pinch

and he will always have his teammates backs. It's like Favre to Rodgers and Manning to Luck. We got Jeter to Judge and we are so damn lucky to have him. First class human, first class teammate and insanely good at baseball.

he's been historically unbelievable.

FWIW, I think someone pointed out that Judge has actually had three other periods (4-8 week periods) that he was nearly identical to this one.

he has. he was on his way to 50+ HRs, 1.000 OPS+ last year too until the accident at Dodger Stadium. Negligent assholes there cost him the season.

AB right before he hit the HR. You can feel the love affair that the fans and Soto have with eachother. It's pretty fantastic.

Per Bryan hoch, Judge was not to happy.

He'll live.

That was me. Judge has had 4-5 months similar to this. However, never for this long a period. In the past, these kind of streaks for him were around 25 games. This one is past 40 games now.

It is still a great point that this isn't "new" to him. I didn't realize he had these other periods.
Judge had a 209 wRC+ (fangraphs' superior version of OPS+)
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 6/10/2024 3:19 pm : link
in 2022. That was a special season. He's at 214 wRC+ so far this year after this blistering stretch. That 209 wRC+ ranks 14th since 1900 among those with 500 Plate Appearances in a season!

Players with 209+ wRC in a season
Barry Bonds 4x ('01-'04)
Babe Ruth 4x (1920, '21, '23, '26)
Ted Williams 3x ('41, '46, '57)
Mickey Mantle (1957)
Rogers Hornsby (1924)
Judge (2022, on pace in 2024)

Ruth/Bonds/Williams is basically the trio that almost all baseball historians consider the most dominant hitters in baseball history, which is reflected in this stat as they're the only ones to reach this level in multiple seasons.

Then we have Peak Mickey Mantle who is considered probably the most naturally gifted athlete to ever step on the diamond. Then we have Hornsby who is the best hitting infielder ever and an inner-circle legend in his own right.

That's it. Those are the only guys. 4 players from prior to 1960 and a roided out Bonds at the start of the century.

Judge keeping this pace and joining the holy Ruth/Bonds/Williams trio as the only players to reach this level on multiple occasions would be nothing short of historic.

I know all these posts are basically different versions of saying the same thing. But holy crap is Judge doing incredible things right now. if you exclude Bonds, Peak Judge is the best hitter the sport has seen in 60 years.

Oh, and he's a 280lb freak who plays a solid Centerfield? Excuse me? This guy is hard to believe.
And Judge seems like an even better human being than his play

on the field. He can probably run for president one day.

I wasn't the biggest Jeter fan, but Jeter and Judge are like night and day off the field.

How are Jeter and Judge like night and day exactly? Neither caused any off the field trouble.

Yea I don’t get that either. Jeter did an amazing job off the field with all the pressure he was dealing with.

Judge seems like a truly great guy though.
