Here we go again with another series thread, this time against the defending World Series champion Rangers in the Lone Star State. Enjoy 😊!
P.S. Sorry for the late posting for this series. Got caught up with some family-related things and just got home.

Notes:
-Tonight's and tomorrow’s games will each be broadcast by SNY.
-The weather won’t be an issue for this series since Globe Life Field in Arlington has a retractable roof. The Rangers are one of five teams in MLB that play on a synthetic surface. The others are Arizona, Miami, Toronto and Tampa Bay.
-The upcoming MLB All-Star Game will be played at Globe Life Field in Arlington next month. Let’s see who makes it to play here again for the Mets at the All-Star Game. Too bad Seth Lugo and Zack Wheeler are no longer with the team since they’re having All-Star seasons. In any case, the Mets have won 9 of their last 11 games—they had a total of just 9 for the entirety of the month of May.

i think the month between now and ASB will decide it. schedule is easy especially after july 1, so if they are in a wild card i doubt they sell anything meaningful. maybe just marte if they can.

Sorry for the lateness. Got home later than I thought I would, but I had the template ready to go. Just needed to make a couple of tweaks/additions to it before posting.
Quite a start! These mongos might actually have something going here. We prolly won't see Senga for another month though, but the starting rotation is doing the job thus far without him. The club playing well since the return of Alvarez is certainly not a coincidence. #LGM!
-Garrett has only thrown 8 pitches in the last 4 calendar days.
HR
Skenes is ridiculous already. What a talent.
Blah Peterson just gave up a 2 run HR.
And then a nice play at 3B by Vientos.
Agreed!! Depending on this next month we might have to ADD to the pen.
HR
This home-plate ump missed strike 3 and cost the Mets those 2 runs.
109.5 mph single
92.2 mph single
110 mph 2b
(also had 96 mph groundout, 89 mph flyout)

6 in a row since Grimace threw that first ball!
Yup. Before it was "how will they blow this " and now feels like "how will they respond"
this deadline was set well for the Mets to be sellers, especially with so many teams to be potentially buying.
The return on Sevy, Alonso, Marte and others would be 5X as much as previous years.
Also movement would set the path for Acuna and Scott to come up for the rest of the year and be ready for 2025 roles.
I love the winning but is this fools gold. we saw this in the beginning of the season before. To me it comes down to this.
Does a "non-hot" (not cold) Mets team have the capability to beat the Phillies/Braves/Dodgers ? I'm not so sure, even with the injuries...
That said, I'm loving the Grimace era. Matches up well with the city connect jerseys too lol
if the team is above .500, make smart moves and try to keep winning. who knows where it goes.
trying to and ultimately winning as many games as possible is a fundamental part of becoming a winning organization.

Yep, you never know what happens. Not smart to sell in the playoff hunt.
Sevy and Alonso should get QOs as well. So if not back, they would get a comp pick.

yep, no real urgency to sell unless there's something special another team puts on the table, and honestly the most special thing they got back last year may be J-rod, who only cost them Pham.
I'd be shopping Marte for something along those lines, fully paid down, but that's because i think his defense is such a net negative he is blocking them from a better roster construction.
at present marte is the worst fielder in MLB:
by DRS he's -10. those 2 main methodologies for advanced defense often disagree, but with marte they are in total alignment.
yep, hopefully there's another team without JDM that feels the same way.

The issue is there's what, 3 teams not in the hunt? Things will shake out a little more in the next month but I'd probably still sell a guy like JDM

Yeah, it's a month and 10 days, so anything can happen between now and then. But as is now, I don't see them being sellers. If they are out of it by the end of July, of course.
I'm here for it though.
giants probably not trading anyone if they are around .500.
cubs have fallen back but i'd kind of doubt they trade bellinger.
if mets were looking for a bat right now, tommy pham, eloy jimenez and justin turner are probably the best rental options i'd be able to come up with. luis robert would be an interesting consideration but he will cost a ton and he is presently hitting .186 with a 40% k-rate.
if marte's bat continues the way it has, he is a strong option if the mets pay him down to where he is essentially "free" DH/part time OF for 2 years.
Here are 16 teams who have gotten nothing from their DH so far - hopefully 1 of them would give us another j-rod/vargas:
Marte has hit better than Arraez this year, who also has 1 more year after this one. Knock the value down by half since Marte is so bad in the field and that is still probably a return we'd be THRILLED with.
I'm here for it though.
speaking of optimism, a couple more we should keep faith with stearns, erick fedde who they were a finalist for looks like he would have been the steal of the offseason and michael tonkin whom he was heavily criticized for now has a 2.9 era. the guys i loudly criticized him for not signing for a lot more money have been awful.
so far his eye on the pitching side has been excellent. diaz going in the tank for may was the only real big problem so far.
it's amazing but once again tommy pham is probably going to end up the best bat on the market lol.
there's a real selling window for marte, i hope they don't pass on it.

Reportedly asked for an "absurd" package from the Padres.

big trades with players who have term left are rare. look at how many false starts there have been with luzardo and some of these other pitchers who have been rumored available for years now.
look at what arraez cost with 1 more year left after this one.
rental market is generally much easier to estimate both in terms of availability and cost. especially if a team like nym is willing to eat as much $ as necessary to facilitate.
I always thought it would be a challenge system. How many challenges will be the question.

at his current pace, if he makes 13 more for 23 total starts he'd hit 128 innings. thinking it's now very unlikely he hits the trigger.

He's thrown 57 innings thus far this season. He needs to reach 140 innings in order for his conditional player option for next season (totaling $17.5 M) to vest. What a boon it'd be to the Mets to not have to be on the books for that money next season luxury tax penalty-wise.

BASEBALL GREAT WILLIE MAYS PASSES AWAY AT 93 Posted by Patrick Glynn | Jun 18, 2024 - ( New Window )
They are only 1/2 games back of the wild card. lol at the NL this year
then you add in a Vientos breakout, Alvarez, and Bader/Marte having good years in the bottom half and this is a lineup that is a lot better than the group in 2022 even with McNeil struggling.
need diaz to be this version of diaz because other than him the pitching is largely mediocre, but this lineup is absolutely good enough to carry mediocre pitching. getting very close to time to start considering what a buying move could look like (luzardo? d-rob? jansen?).
Robertson looked good, just couldn't finish it off
robertson gets worn down when pushed too far. i didnt see that part of the game but in the box i saw he was pitching multi-inning i knew they had a good chance. same thing happened in 2022 when he was on philly.
if tex falls out id trade for him in a heartbeat though. just dont pitch him b2b or multi-inning.
If they buy at the deadline, it'd be for bullpen help. Any additions that can help the club though would mostly be from within: either Senga coming back after the All-Star Break and/or the kids in the minors stepping up (e.g., Scott, Vasil, Baty, Acuna, or Gilbert).
P.S. Alvarez should be named captain of the Mets NOW.
and somehow mauricio hits the ball harder than both of them.

ive been swayed to thinking that was more eppler pushing vogelbach than buck. not sure and i dont think it totally excuses buck because nobody made him act the way he did, but its crazy to think about how much time was wasted.
I just have to wonder how much more rope they give McNeil? I guess since they’re winning, they don’t see it as that necessary, but at some point, they’re going to have to consider moving in another direction. I wonder how much work Baty will need in Cuse to get ready?

Without Betts its a lot closer, but I can't say Lindor, Nimmo, Alonso and JDM is "it's darn close" to:
Betts
Ohtani
Freeman
Smith

Baty has only made 1 appearance at 2b, safe to say he's only getting a look over there to add to his utility vs. a legitimate option to replace McNeil.
Good for Tomas...always liked him even though he was never a great player. Ironically, he swung the bat best, I thought, in his last six weeks with the mets this spring.
Quote:
i know by the time ST rolled around there was a general disappointment that the offseason was low key, and then he had the delayed start to the season, but right now they are getting the guy who hit cleanup in the ASG last year. it is very hard to do better than Lindor, Nimmo, JDM, Alonso #1-4. If that group isnt on the level of ATL/PHI/LAD it's darn close.

the bold (along with acuna out) is kind of a big factor there for at least the next 2 months, and even with Betts for most of the last 2 months the Mets offense has in fact been "darn close".
4/5 players most responsible for that are the ones i mentioned.
were it not for diaz/garrett blowing the 4 or 5 saves in a row they would be in a WC right now thanks to the offense producing like a top of league team.
Quote:
that’ll show me! Great effort, but one thing I haven’t seen mentioned is Severino gutting it out into the 7th. That was key, shortening the game for the bullpen.

Thanks Dan, I thought they were giving him a longer look there.
marte vs lefties = 162 wrc
marte vs rights = 102 wrc
he is literally worst defensive player in MLB right now so id hope baty cant be worse.
dj right now is a 13 wrc vs lefties, so he is basically unplayable same side. vs righties he's 120. baty had a 96 wrc vs righties when he was up, so that was one role he was at least decent at. vs lefties he was 56.

You despise Smith as much as I despise McNeil, lol. Let’s jettison both of them to the moon.
Maybe/maybe not. I don't see much changing with him.

it will not happen here but he is going to find some stupid cutter grip or something and end up really good somewhere with minimal pressure like oakland.

Drew Smith will ALWAYS SUCK. They guy is a waste of space. Phuq him. He needs to be DFAd if they can't trade him. Bring up a second lefty (Danny Young) to add to this pen in his place. The only leagues he might ever be successful in are the Mexican league or out east---in the FAAAAAR EAST in Korea or Japan, lol.

thats what happened with Paul Sewald.
Ottavino and his inability to hold runners on is ridiculous for a major league pitcher.
Ottavino and his inability to hold runners on is ridiculous for a major league pitcher.
Ottavino scares me too, no doubt, but at least he's not a total washout who still has his moments, even at this late stage in his career. What has Drew Smith EVER done?
Thank God he's a FA at the end of this season. The Mets made him available this past off-season, but nobody wanted him. Smith was one of the tank commanders after the trade deadline last season for a reason.
What he does is throw gas on the fire.
The sooner he gets DFAd the better.
He's amazing. Wish we signed him. He's only making 10 million bucks this year to boot!
