I really liked the Tre Herndon signing. CB depth was non-existent and even CB2 was a question. Herndon can play inside and outside. 34 starts, 83 games, and 3100+ snap veteran who is just 28. He isn't a star, but with a $985K cap hit he literally didn't lower the cap space a cent, so that $11.7M cap space is still available to find some other patches even if they don't want to make any big splashes or just sit tight for now.
- Swing tackle: Eluemunor offers some options because he could be kicked out to either side in a pinch and their are a few guard options, but Matt Nelson still isn't healthy and Ezeudu was awful at tackle last year. Tyre Phillips is an easy name to guess at.
- DL: they really did nothing here so far. Jordan Phillips was added on a minimum deal after losing A'shawn Robinson. They're counting on DJ Davidson and Jordon Riley to develop and Rakeem Nunez-Roches. Ryder Anderson could sneak into the group who has allegedly bulked up.
- RB depth: Behind Singletary is a major ?. I'm sure they don't want to give up on Gray but his rookie year was awful. They draft Tracy but he has just one year of actual experience. Beyond that is Jashaun Corbin and Dante Miller. The free agent market is pretty bare, Matt Breida is the easy name, but they need to try something.
- OLB: Behind the big two you have the injury plagued Ojulari and the very replaceable Boogie Basham. Surprisingly they did nothing to address the 3-4DE spot for Bowen, so that could be lumped in here. Tyus Bowser might be worth a health check.
Starting DT might be a need, I guess it is Jordan Phillips (still injured) or Rakeem Nunez-Roches. Ryder Anderson was getting first team reps at mini camp, that is not good.
DT has Phillips and Nacho, two experienced vets. Not great pass rushers but far from duds. They can play. Nacho was an odd fit for Wink's defense. They have a lot of young guys and anything can happen.
Eric gonna wake up tomorrow am pretty surprised with this evening's signing!
the giants also just signed a UFL RB tonight.
DT - im fine giving Riley/Davidson real chances and relying on Roches/Phillips.
Herndon/Long give them enough insurance at CB2 to roll with Flott/Hawkins/Phillips giving them real chances.
Same with Riley/Mills at S, enough insurance.
Not fine with Nelson/Ezedeu only at swing T. i would make a move here and spend money if you have to. this OL must be competent. nothing else matter as much as this.
In terms of 3rd edge - i think they are going to give basham a real chance. azees just has to stay healthy.
i would love to see a 3-4 bigger OLB/DE type who can play the run really well and kick inside at DT to rush the passer besides Phillips, unless they think Basham can do this. dont think fox/whitley/Oghoufo have a role. wonder if they put Beavers a bit at backup OLB for run D and share the responsibility.
He was actually beginning to find himself, then the injury and mis-diagnosis of his ankle.
He's still a super athlete who can still reprise everything that Thomas has done (recall that he too struggled when he first came here).
So, yeah Evan Neal's health, plus great coaching from Bricillo could make last year's failures a forgotten nightmare.
I guess I'm on board with that, still...
RB, ILB and swing tackle are the conserns I have right now. Maybe LG if Neal soils the sheets
While it is true we don't have a Justin Tuck, they didn't have a Dexter Lawrence.
I think OL is still a biggest need. Shell shocked by too many missed attempts to fix the line for 10 years.
Remind yourself of this exact post the next time you complain that every thread turns into a DJ thread.

It isn't just about pass rushing, they lost A'Shawn Robinson and Leonard Williams and replaced them with Jordan Phillips so we're going to see a fall in play and Dexter Lawrence will be asked to do a ton. Planning for a 5th and 7th rounder and a declining 32 year old, plus another who hasn't been worth his contract, will step up is not ideal.
If you look at the metrics from last year when it wasn't Dex and Leo/Robinson out there, there was a tremendous drop-off.

see room on this roster for another RB. And Gray barely played. Don't equate him returning on specials with his ability to run the football. Gray carried the ball 17 times as a rookie and only five times after Week 5.

He's not a factor in the final 53. He's a camp body who has already been cut by the Bengals and Falcons.
On second thought, Peart may have been a better swing tackle prospect going forward than Neal is right now.
For $11.7M minus in-season expenses in the middle of June... I don't think they're in the market.
Yeah, a lot of people just assuming he's going to be a solid starter this season. Both him and Neal not developing and being starter quality will not be a good look for Schoen.

it's the Center - JMS has to step up and be what he was drafted to be -- he had a bad year last year

So basically a rookie year where he was hurt and surrounded by terrible play at the guard position is somehow not a good look for Schoen?
Amazing how you have someone’s career figured out after an injury plagued rookie year

Seen a lot about the 4 man DL and Wide 9 but also saw quite a few 3 man looks in some Titans play. The DT/5T type is a worry imv on early downs/run situations.
Just hoping a lot of the young players make meaningful progress forward all over the roster.

Eluemunor on an average day will grade out better than Neal on his best day thus far.

I'm glad Peart is gone terrible draft pick. What about Ty Phillips for swing tackle?
Ty Phillips got. A pretty good look over the past 2 seasons. I just don’t think the Giants are very interested.

The Giants have a qb, a pretty good one. They need the defense to play better, they need for the defense to stop the gashing runs up the middle, and find a way to defense the TE!
If Jack thinks Jones is a 'pretty good one', we're set.
The Jordan Phillips who last played with Daboll is a player. If he can roll the clock back 5 years DT2 is in fine shape. If it's the Phillips version 2023 DT2 is a hole.
