Simms: 4th and 17th pass vs. Vikes was out of bounds

kinard : 6/22/2024 3:30 pm
During Giants Night of Legends on Thursday, Phil Simms said that the epic 4th and 17 throw against the Vikings in the win that ignited the Giants Super Bowl run in 1986 would have been overturned if they had replay because Bobby Johnson didn't get both feet in bounds.

I rewatched it a bunch of times and it looks good to me. Maybe, I'm missing something (still one of, if not the greatest, clutch throw in Simms' career).

I don't see the OOB.

He comes down with both feet, pivots and steps out. But both feet are down before the pivot.
Was Simms doubled over laughing when he said it?

.
replay did exist in 86

there was a completion in the Super Bowl that was overturned just before the safety.
Under rules extant in 1986

it was definitely a catch. First I think he got his right foot in bounds before he gets pushed out. But it doesn't actually matter if his right foot is in bounds. In 1986 if a receive was pushed out of bounds who otherwise would have been in bounds it was still a catch. That is the case here.
I didn't see a clip of Simms talking about it a few nights ago

But he probably was tongue in cheek with the "nowadays" routine. Johnson was clearly in bounds. That same night Eli basically went into a whole comedy skit when talking about the helmet catch for those that missed it.

The iso on Johnson is pretty clear

Looks like he’s in by at least a foot.

Johnson was clearly in.
Two things. It was a catch number 1 and number 2

I love those Giants helmets of that era.
Also, Hoss's TD to Baker

in the Super Bowl probably gets overturned on review according to today's rules.
Under ANY rules that was a catch

Both feet were down with the ball before being pushed out.
I was listening on transistor radio, walking down 6th Avenue in

Brooklyn, going to the playground with kids #1 (who was 4) and #2 (who was 2, and in a stroller). Mrs S was working that day and even though the Giants were on, I had to get the kids out of the house for some exercise before it got dark. So I brought along the transistor radio. Remember those?

I couldn't believe the Giants made a 4th and 17!
I bet we all remember where we were when that play transpired

I would agree that Simms is busting on today's rules about "what is a catch?".

Under today's interpretation I suppose there could be a slight chance that there could be an issue with Johnson's right foot.

Did he have possession before picking it up again?

But the current rules have certainly gotten better than the Calvin Johnson days. *grin*

Eli was hilarious on that clip!

His show on Giants.com is also very good.
I've seen

that play a hundred times. I never once thought there was any sort of issue.

On the other hand, that Hostetler TD to Baker in the comeback against the Cardinals is another matter.
Strange

That one looks cut & dried to me--not even a gray area suggesting that he might have been anything but in bounds with both feet down.
There actually was replay in 1986
truebluelarry : 6/23/2024 6:49 am : link
that was the first season it was used.
Nobody questioned the catch at the time and it was never reviewed.

However, the Giants did get away with on in the Super Bowl against Denver. Late in the 2nd quarter Elway threw a pass to Key who dove and made a great catch under his body that was ruled incomplete.
During halftime they showed a reverse angle replay that clearly displayed Kay making a clean catch that would've given Denver a first down. The next play on third and long Martin sacked Elway in the end zone for a safety.
That was a huge break for the Giants who could've been down much more than 10-9 at the half.
I think Simms was being toungue and cheek
