Hakeem Nicks. You can blame Reese for missing on the OL, Mara’s handling of TC, and you’d be right, but there’s a direct A to B line that can be drawn from that Tampa game in 2012 where Nicks went down with his ankle, to the rapid decline of the Giants. We all love Cruz, and his injury in 2013 was the dagger, but Nicks was well on his way to being an all time great, and carried us in that 2011 playoff run.
3 pro bowl level receivers in 5 years with career altering injuries. God it makes me sad to think about.
Not even close. His injury completely altered the momentum of the 2008 Giants team. A team that was stronger, and had a better record, than the 2007 team. After he shot himself, they lost three of their last four games, including the playoff game against the Eagles. Devastating.

good point on Nicks.
I'd also say Simms 3 times, 1982 pre season, 1983 when he broke his thumb after Parcells finally game to his senses and benched Olive Oyl, and 1990 when he got hurt against Buffalo. I thought the season was over that day.

Outside of Plax, Simms getting hurt in Buffalo was the first one that came to my mind as well. Him lying on the ground, you knew he, and the season were over. So deflating, but then we got that great ride with Hoss, and an outstanding coaching job.
about Nicks. Never the same after that Tampa game imv.
Cruz's numbers also took a sizeable dive after that injury.
Both the fronts were going to fall apart as the overall drafting had already fallen off but a healthy Nicks as an elite option at the WR spot would be one less of many needs.
was Pierce. By, the time the playoffs rolled around, it was the D that was really more a problem with something like 3 starters walking off the street the week before.
He's a forgotten guy around here. We point to the bad injury luck with our former wideouts but losing him just as he was entering his prime was a big gut punch as well.
Because it was a self-inflicted non football injury. Even dumber that JPP blowing up his hand, and McKinney on the ATV.
I, too, believe the Giants would have won the SB in 08 with Plax available. The Burress Giants owned the Eagles, and they were the only obvious obstacle for the Giants that year. Without Plax, they lost to the Eagles, and have rarely beaten them since.
Sherrard was a bad one.
Simms in Buffalo was bad at the time, but worked out miraculously with Hoss.
Andrew Thomas last year had a pretty devastating effect on the whole season.
I had bought his jersey earlier that afternoon and I was actually at that game but we arrived late so I missed it and I didn’t know what happened until after the game was over.
He could have been one of the all-time greatest shutdown corners ever if he didn’t blow up his knee in that meaningless game
...the team still sucked and was horribly coached.
I'd put Osi in 2008 and Cruz in 2014 above it.
I wouldn't even put David Wilson on the list. He was a terrible 1st round pick that maybe might have panned out as a kickoff returner only.
I disagree about David Wilson. I think Coughlin really did a disservice to him by essentially shelving him early into his rookie season because of a fumble - and it seems a lot of opinions about Wilson's brief time here have been colored by that particular decision.
It took him a while to get consistent reps in-game, and when he finally did he looked very explosive - even running behind an OLine that was decimated by injury at that point. His potential in the NFL will remain unknown, but it was promising.

that's not why he was "shelved". he was a dumb player who didn't know the playbook. RB coach Jerrold Ingram called him out on it during the bye week, that he had no idea where he was supposed to be on a given play. Fumbling was another issue.

The knock on Wilson coming into the draft was that he was a fumbler who ran too high and would get injured. And that’s exactly what happened.
He was a track star at VA Tech more than a football star. He fumbled 7 times during his only season as a starter. Reese drafted him for his 40 time more than anything, IMO.

My first memory of watching the Giants. Sonny Wade and Ronnie Bull were not the better team. An omen for what was to repeat many years over.
One could argue it was the most deflating injury of all time. If DJ doesn't get hurt, Drake Maye would be our quarterback today.
Quote:
In a season that was was essentially over be deflating? Jones in ‘23 was unfortunate, but not at all deflating as a fan.

Then one could equally argue it will be our most fortuitous … when Maye goes the route of his UNC predecessors.
And like another poster just indicated--- Mike Sherrard.
Big loss that year.

You mean like Lawrence Taylor and Hakeem Nicks?

Actually I was thinking previous UNC QBs … like Sammy H and Mitchell T.

Ah yes, the IQ test of player evaluation: helmet scouting.
